Kebbi communities to mining firm: vacate our land

Some communities in Kebbi State have urged EL-TAHDAM Exploration Limited, a mining company, to vacate its ancestral land measuring 5.4 KM2.

The communities which comprise Libata, Kabirba, Warra and Kwanga communities of Warra District, of Ngaski Local Government Area in Kebbi called on security agencies, including the Minister for Solid Minerals Development, to help them chase the firm from their ancestral land to pave the way for the rightful owner, Three Crown Mines Limited, to put the land into use.

In a letter to the Managing Director of EL-TAHDAM Exploration Limited, signed by Village Heads, Religious Leaders, and individual families/land owners, the communities noted that they have resolved as a matter of urgency to issue the notice of demand to the firm in the best interest of the general members of their communities.

A copy of the letter was acknowledged by the office of the Minister for Solid Minerals Development.

In the letter also addressed to the National Security Adviser and the Inspector General of Police, among others, the communities alleged that the company was trying to force itself on them in contravention of the Nigeria and Mining Act and Nigeria Minerals and Mining Regulations which required the consent of the host communities to operate.

The company couldn’t be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report. One of the directors of the company, Adamu Tah, did not pick up his calls or respond to text messages when contacted.

However, the secretary to the district head of Maginga and one of the signatories to the letter, Abdulahi Usman, said efforts to dialogue with the company have been fruitless as it allegedly refused to attend any of the meetings called by stakeholders of the communities.

“All stakeholders have invited El-Tahdam for a meeting but they never showed up,” adding that the company was a threat to the peace enjoyed by their communities.

The communities said: “We have been dismayed by the sad development that your company, EL-TAHDAM Exploration Limited, was purportedly granted an Exploration Licence No. 45689 EL and Mining Lease No. 62680 ML over areas of land in respect of which, the land owners had already given their consent to Three Crown Mines Limited and over which Three Crown Mines Limited had already been granted Exploration Licence No. 45158 EL since the 8th day of June, 2023.

“We wish to categorically note and humbly but firmly emphasise that we neither know your company nor welcome it to our community.

“Ultimately, we are not ready and willing to deal or relate with it as far as the land in respect of which the company was purportedly granted the Exploration Licence and Mining Lease is concerned.

“The consent which your company claims it obtained and on the basis of which the company was wrongfully granted an Exploration License and Mining Lease, was vehemently disclaimed by the persons you claimed gave the said consent.

“We wish to kindly note that the host community has been living in peace and co-existing with all other persons who live and carry out businesses in the host community.

“This rather unfortunate development of granting your company EL and ML over the said area of land, which the community had already given to Three Crown Mines Limited, is a recipe for crisis in the community, as evident in the past activities of the company.

“With all sense of seriousness, we cannot and we will not allow a company which was foisted on the community by what seem to be a deliberate wrongful grant of an EL and ML over a land in respect of which consent was not given, to have access to the said land and continue to ferment trouble in our peaceful community.

“The lands in respect of which your company was wrongfully granted EL and ML are farmlands and a source of livelihoods to the land owners.

“The cornerstone of fair and sustainable development in the mining industry is the willing participation of all parties involved. It, therefore, needs no mentioning that the Government cannot force unwilling landowners and the host community on a willing miner or company.

“Hence, we implore you not to trespass on the lands in question, and any forceful attempt to enter upon the said lands by your company shall be met with an unrelenting legitimate resistance.”

The initiative, held in partnership with Shegs Communications Limited, focused on grassroots security and the implementation of predictive community policing strategies.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government Affairs, Comrade Mohammed Lawwali Na’Allah who presented a paper on “The Role of Local Government in Nation-Building,” emphasized the importance of local authorities in driving national development.

He said that, “Local governments are crucial to nation-building. They translate national policies into actionable results at the grassroots, especially in areas like economic development and public services. Their success is key to sustainable and inclusive development.”

The training marks a significant milestone in Kebbi State’s commitment to modern, community-driven security and its dedication to empowering local leadership in safeguarding lives and property.

•Schools shutdown isn’t the best way of observing Ramadan fast

Four states of the North – Bauchi, Katsina, Kano and Kebbi – have shuttered their respective school system for the 2025 Ramadan fast that commenced on March 1. The policy is ostensibly to ease the stress of the fasting period on Muslim faithful resident in those states.

But the move has ignited controversy regarding its implication for non-Muslim residents, and eventual effect on education standard in affected states particularly, and the northern region in general.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) deplored the closure of public and private schools in the four states and criticised lack of inclusivity in the process that produced the decision, not minding how it also affects non-Muslim students. CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, complained in a statement that the closure of schools disrupted academic calendars and threatened the education of many students.

“These states already face alarming rates of out-of-school children averaging 44 percent, far exceeding the national average. The lack of broad consultation prior to these directives is troubling,” he said.

The apex Christian body argued that education, being a fundamental right, the measure by the four states infringed that right. “The closure of schools across these states, ranging from nursery to tertiary level, for an extended period disrupts academic schedules and threatens the educational advancement of millions of students,” Okoh stated, adding that the decision-making process lacked transparency and failed to involve broad consultations with stakeholders, including Christian leaders, educators and parents. “Policies impacting diverse populations – Muslims, Christians and others – demand transparent, inclusive dialogue with parents, educators, religious leaders and school proprietors. The absence of such engagement erodes trust and unity in our pluralistic society,” he said. “Globally, nations like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where Islam is central and Ramadan deeply revered, do not shut down schools for the entire fasting period. Instead, they adapt schedules, shortening hours or offering flexibility, to balance education with religious practice. A month-long closure, or five weeks in Bauchi’s case, is excessive and departs from sensible precedent,” he further noted, inter alia.

Another body, the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), faulted the policy and argued that school closure for Ramadan reinforced fears that Sharia law in affected states makes no distinction between Muslims and non-Muslims. The forum, in a statement by its national spokesman, Luka Binniyat, likened the measure to Boko Haram’s anti-Western education ideology and urged haste towards restructuring the country as would protect the diversity of rights and values of citizens. It also argued that the measure by the four states infringed presumed constitutional secularity of Nigeria. Some have counter-argued, however, that Nigeria isn’t secular but multi-religious.

But another group defended the school closure policy and tackled CAN, in particular, for its criticism. The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) accused the Christian body of exhibiting double standard and meddling in matters that are none of its business. MURIC Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, accused CAN of playing a meddlesome interloper in the affairs of Nigerian Muslims. “Firstly, Ramadan is a completely Muslim issue. It involves no other faith. CAN should stay out of it,” he said in a statement, adding: “Secondly, Muslims are in overwhelming majority in those four states and the state governments, in a democratic country like Nigeria, should not deny the majority Muslims what they wish. Furthermore, those four states have given the Muslim majority what they desire most based on the principle of ‘the greatest happiness for the greatest number’.”

He further accused CAN of being quick to defend the rights of Christian minorities in the North while allegedly ignoring the rights of Muslim majorities elsewhere.

Religion is a deeply sensitive issue and extreme caution is needed in taking pitches on matters affecting the faith of others. But if this holds true for objectors to the school closure, it no less does for its promoters, especially governments of affected states that should have widely pre-consulted and gotten all on board since the policy affects Moslems and non-Moslems alike.

Interfaith harmony dictates that one is mindful of the sensitivity of the other and should go the extra mile to make room for that sensitivity. Christian faithful only last Wednesday commenced the Lenten season, and it would be grossly errant if governments of predominantly Christian states were to shut down respective school system for the 40-day duration of that season just to serve the interest of their majorities. Jeremy Bentham’s doctrine of ‘the greatest happiness for the greatest number’ that MURIC referenced has to do with unintended unhappiness of the smaller number, not their deliberate affliction with unhappiness as the policy in focus entails.

Our view is that religion is strictly personal, whereas education belongs in the commonwealth. Besides, education is the most strategic investment in the future and should never be reduced to opportunistic shopping card for seasonal political capital.

If state governors concerned aren’t keen on withdrawing the controversial policy, they should do the needful to get the buy-in of all stakeholders and unveil plans to recover the time that will be lost by students during the Ramadan school closure.

He further stressed that the cement plant would strengthen Nigeria’s industrial sector, ensuring a steady supply of cement for local and international markets.

The Minister of Finance, Olawale Edun, praised the initiative, stating that it aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic vision of attracting private investment, fostering industrialization, and reducing poverty.

“Kebbi is ready for this transformation. We have secured federal approvals for major road constructions, and we are committed to ensuring that MSM Group operates in a safe and business-friendly environment.”

  • How Idris is transforming education in Kebbi

How Idris is transforming education in Kebbi

When Nasir Idris assumed office as the ninth governor of Kebbi State on May 29, 2023, he embarked on a mission to redefine the state’s educational landscape. Idris has drawn on his experience as a former teacher and union leader to tackle some of Kebbi’s most pressing educational challenges. His administration is driving an educational transformation aimed at reducing illiteracy, improving educational quality, and positioning the state as a hub of academic excellence, Damola Kola-Dare reports.

    Prioritising teacher welfare and empowerment

Governor Idris has placed a strong emphasis on improving teacher welfare, recognising their critical role in delivering quality education. He increased the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years and extended their years of service from 35 to 40. This allows experienced educators to remain in service longer, ensuring stability and continuity in classrooms. To address teacher shortages, his administration approved the recruitment of 2,000 new teachers across the state.

Additionally, the governor raised teacher salaries to boost morale and encourage retention. These measures underscore his commitment to creating a skilled and motivated teaching workforce capable of nurturing Kebbi’s future leaders.

Infrastructure growth and mega school projects

Governor Idris has initiated large-scale renovations of schools to address the issues of dilapidated buildings and overcrowded classrooms. His administration allocated N8.9 billion for the construction and upgrade of 120 secondary schools. Furthermore, contracts were awarded for the construction of four mega schools — one in each of the state’s four emirate councils. These flagship institutions are designed to serve as models of excellence in learning environments.

The improvements include modern facilities, new classrooms, and updated furnishings, creating a conducive atmosphere for effective learning. These efforts are not merely aesthetic but are vital to enhancing the overall educational experience for students and teachers alike.

    Expanding equal access to education

A key focus of the governor’s administration is increasing access to education, particularly for the girl-child. In a state where cultural norms often limit girls’ educational opportunities, his initiatives have made significant progress. Female school enrolment has risen, breaking down barriers and fostering gender inclusivity.

To demonstrate his commitment, the governor donated N50 million to Command Science Secondary School, Girls, Goru. His administration also covered NECO and WAEC examination fees for all students, alleviating financial burdens on families and increasing participation in critical assessments.

    Financial support for tertiary students

The governor’s reforms extend to higher education, with substantial financial support for students in tertiary institutions. His administration paid N2 billion for students enrolled in Nigerian universities and allocated N723 million for Kebbi State students studying abroad in countries like India, Egypt, and Cyprus. These investments aim to produce a generation of skilled graduates who can contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.

    Elevating tertiary institutions

Under Governor Idris, Kebbi’s tertiary education sector has witnessed remarkable progress. For the first time, governing boards were established for all state tertiary institutions, including Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA), and the State Polytechnic, Dakingari. This structured governance ensures accountability and strategic oversight.

In another milestone, KSUSTA held its first convocation ceremony in over three decades, funded by the state government. The administration also upgraded the School of Health Technology, Jega, to a college and secured accreditation for its courses, enhancing its reputation and appeal to prospective students.

Revitalising Tsangaya Schools and reducing out-of-school children

Idris has made strides in integrating traditional Quranic schools (Tsangaya) into the modern educational system. By providing funding and incorporating basic literacy and numeracy skills into their curriculum, these schools now offer a balanced education. This approach respects cultural heritage while equipping children with the tools needed to thrive in the contemporary world, significantly reducing the number of out-of-school children in Kebbi.

    Strengthening monitoring and supervision

To ensure sustainable reforms, the governor revived the inspectorate division within the Ministry of Basic Education. This division enforces quality control and supervises schools to maintain high standards. By prioritizing accountability and continuous improvement, his administration is laying the groundwork for long-term success.

    A vision for educational excellence

In less than two years, Governor Nasir Idris has made remarkable strides in transforming Kebbi’s education sector. With over N10 billion invested, his administration has improved infrastructure, enhanced teacher welfare, and removed financial barriers for students. By prioritizing access, quality, and inclusivity, the governor has set Kebbi State on a path toward becoming a leader in educational excellence in Nigeria.

His vision and reforms are equipping Kebbi’s youth with the tools they need to succeed, creating a brighter future for the state and its people. Governor Idris’ achievements reflect a deep commitment to progress, ensuring that every child in Kebbi has the opportunity to learn, grow, and excel.

Students protest alleged extortion, set Provost’s residence on fire in Kebbi

Students at the College of Health Sciences and Technology in Jega, Kebbi State, set fire to the residence of Provost Alhaji Haruna Saidu-Sauwa during a violent protest sparked by allegations of extortion.

The incident, which also saw the vandalism of the provost’s vehicle, erupted over claims that the college management demanded N23 million from students for index registration related to their graduation.

The controversy began with the introduction of a new Public Health programme, initially affiliated with the Reproductive Health and the Public Health Association of Nigeria.

Students were reportedly asked to pay an additional N65,000 each for index registration, in addition to the N30,000 they had already paid, following a merger of the programme with the Department of Environmental Health to secure certification.

However, Provost Saidu-Sauwa vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “fictitious, baseless, and mischievous.”

No fewer than 40 fishermen have jointly killed a mother hippopotamus that killed Malam Usman Maigadi, a guard at Orchard Farm owned by the Emir of Yauri, Dr Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi on Sept. 22.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the fishermen armed with bows and arrows have killed the hippopotamus in Yauri river, Yauri Local Government Area on Monday.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of Yauri LGA, Alhaji  Abubakar Shu’aibu, said the animal was killed by the fishermen after receiving a directive from the Emir of Yauri.

”If you could recall, the hippo has killed Yauri Emir’s guard and another farmer in September.
