    1,500 Kebbi residents benefit from Nasara foundation’s medical outreach

    The Nasara Women Development Foundation also known as Nasara Foundation has provided free medical services to no fewer than 1500 beneficiaries in Kebbi State.

    The outreach, which was the first phase of the community eye care program by the Foundation, took place in Kebbi Medical Centre, Kalgo, and all the beneficiaries had free feeding. 

    Transport fare was also provided for them by the Foundation.

    The outreach, done in partnership with Tulsi Chanrai Foundation, saw 500 beneficiaries undergone free cataract diagnosis and eye surgeries while 1000 others received prescription glasses for refractive errors apart from treating others with eye issues such as allergies and infections.

    Speaking at the Medical Centre during a tour, the Wife of Kebbi Governor and Founder, Nasara Foundation, Her Excellency, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris said that her Foundation “is committed to supporting the administration of His Excellency, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris in its quest to having a healthy and vibrant state.”

    According to Hajiya Zainab: ”This would be the second of such Medical Outreach after the one we did prior to the 2023 election. We are aware that there are many people who have eye defects and may not have funds to spend in the hospitals to correct such defects.

    “We have not only arranged for free eye surgeries for 500 beneficiaries but the other 1000 people would also benefit from free diagnosis, treatment and prescription glasses. We are also feeding all the beneficiaries and also provide them with transport fare. We have done all of these so that none of them would be left out.”  

    Speaking about the involvement of the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation, the Program Manager, Kebbi Eye, Deshpande Chandrakant said that they had been relentlessly pursuing the cause of preventable blindness through high quality and high-volume cataract surgeries in and around Kebbi State for over two decades.

    He added:  ”Considering the high prevalence, we are open to collaborate with like-minded organizations that can support the cause. Nasara Foundation under leadership of Her Excellency, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris had previously partnered with us by supporting outreach for Eye care.

    “His Excellency, Governor Idris appreciates the deliverables achieved by the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation and is always supportive of the initiatives. The outreach is an additional component to reach out to patients’ eye care specifically cataract. This shall help in identification and treatment of cataract patients.”

    State Police: Kwara, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kebbi, FCT delay decision – NEC

    The National Executive Council (NEC) has given the states yet to submit their reports on the proposal for the creation of state police to do so on or before Monday, September 9.

    It would be recalled that President Bola Tinubu had on Thursday, February 15, 2024, agreed with the need to establish state police as recommended by state governors to curb rising insecurity in the country.

    States were thereafter directed to submit their reports to the council for deliberation and action.

    Disclosing the NEC’s ultimatum on the matter to journalists at the end of the Council’s 143rd meeting at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday, the acting governor of Oyo state, Bayo Lawal, said failure by the four states yet to bring in their reports by Monday would mean whatever decision the Council arrives at would be imposed on them.

    Though Lawal refused to mention those states involved, the investigation revealed that they were Adamawa, Sokoto, Kwara, Kebbi, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

    He said: “An update on the establishment of State police was considered and this was as a result of the security situation challenges that we have across the nation in Northeast, Northcentral, southwest, Southeast and south-south.

    “So that we would have robust security in our nation, for that purpose sometime last year NEC considered the establishment of state police and asked states to make submissions of considerations

    “Today all the states were supposed to submit for consideration of the NEC. Incidentally, four states couldn’t submit for that purpose. NEC decided that those states must make their submissions on or before Monday 9th September otherwise whatever decision NEC takes on the establishment of State police is binding on those states that refused to submit.”

    Massive turnout as Kebbi holds peaceful council polls

    There was massive turnout of voters at the local government poll of Kebbi State. 

    The exercise started on a peaceful note across the 250 wards of the 21 councils.

    The exercise commenced with accreditation and voting simultaneously in most polling units as early as 8:30am following early arrival of materials and officials at polling units.

    The Nation reports that materials, security personnel, party agents of the 17 participating political parties and election monitors were prompt at most polling units with appreciable turnout of voters in long queues waiting to cast their votes.

    However, The Nation observed that women outnumbered men voters in most polling units visited within the state capital.

    In Argungu town , the exercise did not commence early in some polling units until around 9: 30am due to an early downpour.

    Kebbi declares Monday public holiday

    Kebbi governor, Nasir Idris has declared Monday as a public holiday to mark the beginning of the new Islamic calendar, lst Muharram 1446AH.

    Alhaji Auwal Manu-Dogondaji, the state Commissioner for Establishment, said this in a statement in Birnin Kebbi on Friday.

    According to him, the 1st of Muharram is on a sunday, due to the importance of the Islamic new year, the government decided to shift the public holiday to Monday.

    Manu-Dogondaji congratulated the Muslim Ummah on the advent of the new Islamic calendar, urging the Muslims to sustain fervent prayers for peace, security and prosperity of kebbi and the nation as a whole.

    “I extend the congratulation of the governor to the entire Muslim Ummah across the globe,” the commissioner said.

    Immigration service to deploy e-solutions to border areas in Kebbi

    Efforts have reached advanced states by authorities of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to deploy e-border solutions in parts of Kebbi state, a north-western state bordering Niger Republic.

    The solutions are to be deployed to its Forward Operating Base (FOB) located at Kyengyakwai, Kamba Control Post, Dole Kaina (Land), and Lolo (Marine) Control Posts.

    According to the public relations officer of the NIS, Kenneth Udo, the technology solutions are being built and installed in the areas to provide real-time intelligence and surveillance services for the nation’s border.

    Udo said in a statement that the Comptroller-General of the NIS, Kemi Nanna Nandap conducted a two-day working visit to Kebbi state at the weekend for an on-the-spot assessment of the nation’s borders.

    He quoted Nandap as saying that the intelligence gathered from e-border solutions would be swiftly shared among the security agencies to further enhance collaboration.

    Udo said Nandap also visited Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State and traditional rulers of border towns to strengthen collaboration with the stakeholders on enhanced border security.

    According to him, the Comptroller-General emphasised the service’s readiness to continue deploying advanced technology to safeguard Nigeria’s borders.

    Nandap hinted that the e-border solutions already being deployed would help checkmate trans-border crimes and other related offences.

    Governor Nasir promised to provide some vehicles to enhance the operational efficiency of the NIS in Kebbi assuring that the partnership underscores a shared commitment to promoting national security and a sustainable migration governance system.

    He further promised to assist as may be required to enhance the operational efficiency of the Regional Migration Academy, Tugga.

    Nandap also visited and held discussions with the Emir of Gwandu and chairman of the Kebbi State Council of Chiefs, Major General Muhammad Bashar (retd.), and the border community leader from Kamba Community.

    Udo said discussions extended to other stakeholders whose proximity to border crossings and knowledge of the locality make them invaluable assets in identifying and addressing security threats.

    Nandap also interacted with personnel of the NIS state command and advised them to be sensitive, vigilant, and show a high sense of responsibility for their duties.

    The Kebbi Government says it has expended over N21 billion on the purchase and distribution of palliatives, farm inputs, and disbursement of financial support to its people to improve their livelihood.

    According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Alhaji Yakubu Ahmad-BK, the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, made this known while briefing Journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Saturday.

    He said, “The state government has remained steadfast to the provision of essential intervention to enhance food security, implement policies to empower individuals, support farmers, and provide free sustenance to the populace.”

    On the menace of migratory birds, Ahmad-BK said the state government had sprayed more than 4,000 litres of chemicals and operated many flight hours to safeguard agricultural yields from pests.

    He added that the government had also distributed fertilisers worth N2.6 billion to farmers free of charge to boost productivity and enhance national food security.

    “Furthermore, N8.5 billion was spent on the procurement of solar-powered water pumps, pump conversion kits, power tillers, and motorised sprayers to support farmers and reduce operational costs.

    “All these are geared towards improving agricultural productivity and sustainability,” he noted. Ahmad-BK added that this administration had purchased hundreds of truckloads of grains worth billions of Naira, adding that over 200 truckloads were procured and distributed free to people throughout the state for Ramadan fast.

    The commissioner said he was unamused about the recent reaction of the opposition to the palliative looting incident as well as the resignation of the Chief Imam of the oldest Jumu’at Mosque in Birnin Kebbi.

    “The comments by the opposition were unwarranted and uncalled for. However, there is no doubt, it was an attempt to gain cheap political relevance,” the commissioner said.

    Kebbi accepts Imam’s resignation

    The Kebbi Government said it has ratified the resignation of the Chief Imam of the oldest Jumu’at Mosque in Birnin Kebbi called “Wala Mosque”, Sheikh Rufa’i Ibrahim.

    The Commissioner, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sani-Aliyu, made this known while briefing Newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday.

    He requested the Gwandu Emirate Council to put machinery in motion for the appointment of a substantive Chief Imam for the Wala Jumu’at Mosque.

    Sani-Aliyu also endorsed the appointment of the Na’ibul Imam (Deputy Imam), Mallam Mammam Nata’ala to take over the leadership of the mosque in acting capacity as directed by Birnin Kebbi Local Government Ciuncil.

    He said that the former chief imam resigned from the position on personal basis which was accepted by the Birnin Kebbi local government council and approved by the state government.

    The commissioner debunked insinuations that Sheikh Ibrahim left his position on monetary issues of being short changed by his subordinates.

    “Gov. Nasir Idris in his compassionate disposition gave financial support to Imam (leaders) of Jumu’at Mosques in the state to assist them cushion the effect of present economic hardship in the country and help those around them.

    “Government has never received any report of sharp practice in the sharing of the money; therefore, the allegation of short changing the former chief imam by his aides, is untrue,” he said.

    Kebbi opens 69 feeding centres

    As Muslims observe the Ramadan (fasting) period, the Kebbi State Government has opened 69 feeding centres across the 21 Local Government Areas.

    Special Adviser to Governor Nasir Idris on Religious Affairs, Malam Imran Usman-Abdur-Rahman, made this known during a briefing in Birnin Kebbi yesterday.

    He said, “Governor Idris has authorised that three feeding centres for Ramadan breakfast be opened in each of the 21 local government areas of the state, beginning from the first day of the Ramadan, to assist people.”

    Usman-Abdur-Rahman said the governor also released funds for complete renovation of Sheik Abbas Jega Jumu’at Mosque at Rafin Atiku, Birnin Kebbi, including internal furnishing and installation of security lights.

    “The governor had wanted the work to begin immediately, but the Iman of the Mosque suggested that the action be deferred until after Eid-el-fitir, because of the ongoing Ramadan Tafsir,” he said.

    Kebbi begins training of 2,400 teachers

    Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris said the state government in collaboration with POBITECH Consultancy Service has commenced the training of 2,400 primary schools teachers in the state.

    The governor, who said this yesterday while declaring the training opened at Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, said the training followed his administration’s revolution in the state education sector.

    He urged teachers, parents and other relevant stakeholders to join hands with his administration to move the education sector forward.

    “Let me use this medium to inform this gathering that I’m going to give more priority to the welfare of teachers. This administration will support Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE).

    “We are going to modify and strengthen its operations to conform with the needs of our society,” he assured.

    While urging the participants to be committed to the training, Idris reiterated his administration’s readiness to key into anything that would promote and project the teaching profession.

    Rector of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Dr Usman Sani-Tunga, commended the governor for the initiative, describing training and retraining of teachers as the best way to drive the sector to prosperity.

    He assured the state government that the institution would do its best to give the trainees quality training using qualified and professional trainers.

    Chairman of Kebbi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Suleiman Khalid, said the training had been divided into six units, with 400 participants in each unit.

    Khalid, who listed English Language, Mathematics and Pedagogical skills as subjects for the training, said the programme was scheduled to last two weeks.
