Omeruo set to join New York City FC in MLS

Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo  who has been without a club since leaving Kasimpasa on January 28, is  been highly sought-after particularly in Major League Soccer (MLS).

According to Africafoot , New York City FC is reportedly ready to sign the experienced centre-back for next season.

Omeruo, who won the African Cup of Nations in 2013 with Nigeria, has proven experience in international football, having played over 300 matches in his career. He could therefore be a significant addition to the American club’s defense.

The 31-year-old Abia State native has played for several European clubs, including Standard de Liège, Chelsea, Ado Den Haag, Middlesbrough and Leganes in Spain.

Although New York City FC is highly interested in his services, Omeruo has not yet decided on his future destination. Other European and Turkish clubs, including Gaziantep, are also in the running to recruit him.

However, joining the American project could allow Kenneth Omeruo to discover a new country, a new league and prove that he still has it in him despite months without competition. The Nigerian’s decision is therefore highly anticipated in the coming days. He is valued at €1.2 million by Transfermarkt .

New York City will soon be playing their MLS match against New England. The betting company 1xbet (you can download 1xbet here) offers the following odds for this match: New York City wins at 2.65, a draw is valued at 3.25, and New England wins at 2.25.

“I don’t see myself going back to play in the Nigerian league, but I’m passionate about identifying talented players,” Omeruo noted on X (formerly Twitter).”I believe in the immense potential of Nigerian football. After my playing career, I would love to help manage the league. It’s a tough challenge, but we should aim to sell players for better prices, like the Brazilians do, rather than for small amounts.”

Notable players like Ahmed Musa, Shehu Abdullahi, and Brown Ideye have recently decided to return to the NPFL but Omeruo said he won’t be joining the train in another capacity than as a player.

Omeruo throws weight behind Chelle’s Super Eagles

    • By Paul Onehi

Defender Kenneth Omeruo has expressed optimism over the appointment of Franco-Malian Eric Sekou Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles.

Chelle, who was formally introduced to the public  on Monday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja as the 37th person  to lead the Nigeria’s  senior men’s national team.

Kasımpaşa defender noted that  Chelle’s arrival presents a fresh opportunity for players, particularly those who have not been regular starters, to demonstrate their capabilities and stake a claim for a spot in the team.

“‘We’re at a critical juncture where every player must be at their best,” Omeruo stressed in an interview aired on  Brila Fm. “For those of us not playing regularly, it’s an opportunity to prove ourselves. We must demonstrate to the manager that we deserve a place in the team.’”

Omeruo praised Chelle’s tactical acumen, citing Mali’s disciplined displays at AFCON as evidence of his ability to implement a cohesive game plan.”

He said: “I think he has something to give to the team. With the level of talent in the Super Eagles, he wouldn’t have any problem to make us play the way he wants us to play.”

Omeruo  further expressed his confidence in the team’s potential, attributing the squad’s renewed sense of self-assurance to the guidance of former interim coach Austin Eguavoen.

“Kudos to Eguavoen for those games (AFCON qualifiers), when he took over, our confidence was low, but he helped us get it back. Now, when we are at our best, no country can stand against the Super Eagles, “he said.

Despite Omeruo’s bullish outlook, the Super Eagles face an uphill battle in their FIFA World Cup N qualifying campaign after  taking just three points from  their opening four matches as  the team languishes in fifth position  in their  Group  C section that houses Rwanda, South Africa, Benin, Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

The hardworking defender has been out of action since last October  having   went out injured during Kasimpasa’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Galatasaray, where he featured for 60 minutes before being forced off.

“It’s been a difficult few months. Glad to be running again… can’t wait to start helping my team again… I have missed it.. #unclek #offthepitch,” Omeruo wrote.

While out injured, Omeruo missed key games for his  Turkish Super Lig club and was also not available for the Super Eagles’  2025 African Cup of Nations final rounds of the qualifiers  last  November.

Omeruo’s return to full  fitness would certainly be a big boost  for Kasimpasa who are currently 9th  on the Turkish League log and even more so  for  the Super Eagles  since the  2026  FIFA World Cup qualifiers  will resume in March  with a double  header  against  Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

The Super Eagles  who lie precariously  in fifth position  in their Group C  qualifying section ,with  three points  from their opening matches , will be away to top of the table Rwanda on March 17 before hosting Zimbabwe on March 24.

  • CD Leganes defender confirms Omeruo’s departure

GREECE international Dimitrios Siovas has claimed that Kenneth Omeruo’s proposed switch to CD Leganes is a done deal.

According to Spanish sports daily Marca , Siovas leaked the information that the Super Eagles star has already signed for Leganes and will be unveiled by the La Liga side in the coming days.

Siovas posted the information on Instagram before deleting it with official details not yet decided.

After long negotiations, Leganes have agreed to pay Chelsea 4.5 million euros for the permanent signing of Omeruo.

The 25-year-old, who arrived Chelsea from Sunshine Stars in January 2012, is expected to put pen to paper on a five-year deal until the summer of 2024.

Omeruo had attracted interest from Celta Viga, Villarreal and Amiens but his priority was to continue his career at Leganes, where he shone last season.

  • Chelsea to decide my future, says Kenneth Omeruo

Super Eagles’ defender Kenneth Omeruo has put aside transfer speculations regarding his permanent switch to Leganes, revealing that only Chelsea can decide if he stays or not, AOIFootball.com reports.

The 25-year-old player has been an integral part of the Leganes team this season but with his loan spell set to expire next month, the defender now hopes for a quick resolution ahead of the summer transfer window.

“My stay back at Leganes will be determined after the season. I can’t really say much about the transfer, rather I am just concentrating on helping my team finish in the top 10 at the end of the season. My parent club Chelsea has the right to discuss my transfer with any other club, but for now, I am with Leganes and I am just focused on ending the season on a high with the team,” Omeruo said.

Having started in 24 of the 25 league games he has featured this season, the vastly travelled defender said it has been an impressive debut season for him in Spain and hopes to do more for the fans who have shown him love since his arrival last summer.

Omeruo was the star player for Leganes in their matchday 33 clash against Celta Vigo, which earned him a place in the Team of the Week and will hope to replicate the same feat when his side travels to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan to take on Sevilla later on Friday night.

  • Omeruo returns as Leganes hold Real Madrid

Nigeria defender, Kenneth Omeruo returned to Leganes starting line up on Monday in their 1-1 draw at home to Real Madrid in a La Liga clash.

Omeruo who had missed Leganes’ last three games against Getafe, Real Valladolid and Alaves starred in a five-man defence which paraded Allan Nyom, Unai Bustinza, Dimitrios Siovas and Jonathan Silva.

Jonathan Silva scored for Leganes in the waning seconds of the first half when the defender curled a shot past Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas inside the box.

Karim Benzema drew Real Madrid level six minutes into the second-half from a tight-angle rebound after Ivan Cuellar blocked the Frenchman’s initial shot.

The draw strengthened Los Blancos’ third-place spot in the table but remain four points behind second-place Atletico Madrid.

While for Leganes the draw extends their unbeaten streak to four league games, but have not defeated Madrid in league play in the last six matchups.

Omeruo who is currently on loan from Chelsea has made 22 La Liga appearances this season.

The 24-year-old central defender, who can also play at right-back, moved to Stamford Bridge from Standard Liege in 2012 but has failed to establish himself with the London club, joining the likes of Ado Den Haag, Middlesbrough, and Alanyaspor on loan in the past.

Omeruo spent last season on loan at Turkish side Kasimpasa, where he made 28 appearances. He nonetheless made it into the

Nigerian squad to the 2018 World Cup in Russia where they Super Eagles failed to go past the group stage after losing 2-0

to Croatia, beating Iceland 2-0 and losing to perennial World Cup rivals Argentina 1-2.

  • Kenneth Omeruo arrives in Turkey

Nigeria international defender Kenneth Omeruo has arrived in Turkey for transfer talks with interested teams after failing to impress new coach of Chelsea Maurizo Sarri despite his starring role for Nigeria at the World Cup in Russia.

Omeruo was widely hailed as one of the best defenders for Nigeria at the World Cup but Sarri still doesn’t see the Nigerian as part of his plans for the new season, and the defender is set for another spell away from the club.

A move to Turkey, where he has spent the last three seasons on loan, looked like the surest possibility for mow with rumours linking him with a permanent move to Goztepe after impressing at Kasimpasa last season.

He arrived Turkey last night for talks with not just Goztepe but two other unnamed teams who are also on his trail as he seeks a permanent move away from Chelsea, where he has failed to make the step up to the main team since joining in 2013.

24-year-old Omeruo has in the past turned out for Dutch side ADO Den Haag and Turkish side Alanyaspor with two loan spells at Middlesbrough and Kasimpasa among the five seasons he has played on loan away from Chelsea.

  • KENNETH OMERUO: My second appearance in World Cup amazing

Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo, is feeling on top of the world for making a back-to-back World Cup appearance. He spoke with TUNDE LIADI before jetting out to Russia.

THE late coach Stephen Keshi had elevated the young Kenneth Omeruo to a regular defender/libero in his team going into the 2013 Africa Nations Cup, where Nigeria won the tournament after 19 years.

His impressive performance at the AFCON elevated him to the 2014 World Cup, and he played in all four matches before France eliminated Nigeria in the second round.

Omeruo informed that appearing at the World Cup a second time is amazing. “It means a lot. It is amazing. I have been to the World Cup before and I knew how magnificent it was. I am really glad to have another chance to represent Nigeria in Russia.

“I want to play every game and I will like to start from the beginning to the end. Nigeria is a country with lots of talents and I am only opportune to be here. Every time I go back home to play football on the streets with my former playmates I am always amazed at what I see. We have good players and it is not that I am the best but just because I am lucky to be selected. And no matter who plays it is the country that we are trying to put in focus, not just myself. Anyone that is selected is welcome by me.”

On his status at Chelsea, Omeruo who is on loan with Kasimpasa in Turkey, said he made the right move by opting to go out on loan.

“For me, I know the situation in Chelsea. We have lots of amazing talents at the club and they are all doing well in their respective positions. It is no longer about playing for Chelsea for some of us. Every player wants to play in a recognised league where they would be mentioned regularly. If I decide to stay at Chelsea not minding if I remain on the bench while waiting for a player to get injured, I don’t think I will have the opportunity I am having now to represent my fatherland at the World  Cup for the second consecutive time.

“I would have loved to stay and fight for a shirt like Victor Moses did, but as I said, I have gone on several loan moves, which has made it possible for me to play more games than I should have been with Chelsea. I will like to see what my involvement with the Super Eagles at the World Cup in Russia brings. It is obvious that I need a (more stable) home. They are aware of this as well and I hope I get a good World Cup and have more options in the summer transfer.”

Omeruo speaks more in the exclusive interview. Excerpts:

    Leaving home to play abroad

One of the difficulties we African players face is going abroad to play. It is difficult but I thank God for where I am today.

    Parents’ endorsement

Things have changed now than it was when I started playing. My parents are not saying anything to my siblings that have decided to play football because of the success that I have brought to the family in the course of representing Nigeria.

    Mother’s belief

I think my mum had more belief than myself because she predicted that I would wear the national team jersey one day. For us, we felt she just wanted the best for us but it worked the way she predicted it. I played and my younger brother was also in the Under 20 camp some years ago. It was amazing because I never believed even when Chelsea called me that they were interested in me. I didn’t believe it. I didn’t take them seriously.

Football family  I don’t really think I had any role to play in their career as footballers because three of us started playing the game almost at the same time. I will say I was just lucky to be the first to really make it but football has been what we do since we were at school.

    Nigerian league

I played a lot of games for Sunshine Stars but the one I won’t forget in a hurry was the one with Enyimba because I dislocated my shoulder during the game. It was bad because it affected me later in the future. I had an amazing time with Sunshine Stars and this toughened me up for the challenges ahead. Before playing the Under 17 World Cup which we hosted, I never played any league and it was good for me.

    Kasimpasa experience

My form is fine and I can say that I had an amazing season for myself in Turkey. It was good partnering with Oboabona. We won a trophy and I think we can still win more trophies with the present Eagles. I will keep doing what I am doing, which is working hard and also be keeping myself fit and to be ready whenever called upon; whether I start or coming from the bench.

We had a good team. We had a coach who played a pattern that suited me very well. I adapted quickly to his pattern and it helped me to play every week.

    2013 AFCON

When I received my invitation to the national team, I was playing at a right back for Den Haag in Holland and when I saw the invite I was actually thinking I was called up to fill the space and that before the team departed for South Africa I would be dropped. But for me when I had the chance to play, I was very focused and it made me do well. I went into the Nations Cup not knowing if I would play any game at all because I was just coming into the team, but when I started the second game, I did that as a centre back and it was different from the position I had been playing before then. It was my position and I was able to cope very well there.

    Experience at Chelsea

It was good. Initially, when I signed for Chelsea and I stayed back in Holland there were so many questions I couldn’t answer because young players who were my teammates in ADO Den Haag wanted me to furnish them everything about the club, but I couldn’t provide the answer. They were eager to know about the facilities at the stadium, but I haven’t been there before at that time because I signed for them while in Holland and I remained there. There was a player that kept on teasing me that I called myself a player on a team but I was yet to go there.

I didn’t go to England until after the 2013 Nations Cup and the FIFA Confederation Cup. I was supposed to come into the main team of Chelsea but the injury I copped during the Confederation Cup in Brazil, which was a recurrence of the shoulder injury I had while playing for Sunshine Stars against Enyimba, slowed me down. I had already secured almost everything including getting a work permit but that injury changed a lot of things. After my injury, I went back to England with a view that I could still go with them to the pre-season but I felt the shoulder injury had not been properly treated because of the kind of pain I experienced few days before our departure.

I had to go through a surgery and they recalled Kurt Zouma to take my place. I was out for like four months and I had to go on loan to Middlesbrough because it was a World Cup year. I went there to seek more playing time so that I could be in the Eagles team to the World Cup.

    Marriage and career

I feel focused and more responsible. I have more responsibilities now more than before. I am really focused. You said you will like to have a home which means you are not really comfortable with present arrangement of sending you on several loans.

    Most memorable game for Nigeria

It is certainly going to be the game against Burkina Faso in the final of the 2013 AFCON. It was my first trophy for the Super Eagles and also my first game for Nigeria’s senior national team. It was a good way to launch my career with the Eagles.

    If not a footballer

I really don’t know. It may be probably going to school and becoming a banker.

    Football idol

Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, was my idol while growing up.

    Most troubled striker

I will have to choose between Edin Dzeko and Karim Benzema.

Eagles as youngest squad in Russia

It is a blessing. Only a few of us that have played in the World Cup before and the new ones are determined to prove their mettle in Russia. It will have a positive influence on us.

Difference between current squad and Brazil 2014 team

I will say we are younger now. We are the youngest team this time around unlike 2014 when we had a blend of experience and young players.

    Favourite Nigerian dish

I will say okaze soup and eba.

    Favourite all-time 11

Enyeama, Omeruo, David Luiz, Xavi, Marcelo, Ronadinho, Coutinho, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, Neymar, Victor Moses

    Between C. Ronaldo and Messi

    Ronaldo.

    Favourite colour?

    White.

    FIFA or PES?

FIFA! It is more mature and real.

    Most dressed Super Eagles player

    I will pick Uche Agbo.

    Team’s pastor

    Daniel Akpeyi.

Most jovial player in the Eagles camp

    Uche Agbo.

Which will you call the biggest stadium that you have ever played?

I was at Wembley Stadium but I didn’t play. I will say the stadia at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil were amazing.

Will you allow your son to play football in the future?

Definitely, I will and he will also play for Nigeria by God’s grace.
