  • Kia gets three awards at Red Dot

Kia has triumphed again in the Red Dot Awards, securing three prestigious awards for design. The new Stinger fast-back sedan, the Stonic compact crossover and the third-generation Picanto city car won in their respective categories.

The international jury of design experts awarded the Stinger the ‘Best of the Best’ title, praising the car for its pioneering design.

The trio of victories adds to Kia’s continuing success, with the company having won a remarkable 21 Red Dot Awards since the Kia Soul first took victory in 2009. The latest awards follow Kia’s triple iF Design Award win earlier in 2018.

“Our global design team can be incredibly proud of their latest triple triumph. It highlights Kia’s passion for design quality and ingenuity, which has once again been lauded by a panel of international design experts,” said Peter Schreyer, the President and Chief Design Officer of Kia Motors Corporation.

“Winning the ‘Red Dot: Best of the Best’ for the fourth time is truly exceptional. With its modern take on the classic gran turismo style, the Kia Stinger is further proof of Kia’s high design standards,” Schreyer added.

The Stinger, designed at Kia’s European design centre in Frankfurt, Germany, marries classic gran turismo design with a spacious and cosseting interior. Taking inspiration from the grand tourers of the 1970s, the Stinger features elegant fastback proportions and a muscular ‘coke bottle’ shape down its flanks, highlighting the car’s rear-wheel biased power delivery.

Also designed in Frankfurt, the Stonic, Kia’s debut compact crossover, offers a striking and bold exterior design, combined with an elevated seating position and practical SUV format. It is the most customisable Kia ever made, offering buyers a wide choice of two-tone paint combinations and interior colors.

The third generation of the Kia Picanto – Kia’s smallest car – brings a youthful and energetic character to the A-segment. It boasts a distinctive new design and a high-quality, high-tech cabin, with huge potential for customisation. Despite its compact dimensions, the Picanto’s intelligent design makes it one of the most spacious cars in its class.

  • Kia unveils first images of new K900 luxury

Kia Motors last Tuesday revealed the design of the new flagship luxury sedan – K900.

The K900 has been created in collaboration between Kia’s global design headquarters in Namyang, Korea and the brand’s United States (U.S) design studio in Irvine, California. It will make its world debut at the New York International Auto Show on Wednesday.

It will be manufactured in Korea and will go on sale across selected global markets from the second quarter of this year.

Combining a beautifully balanced design with elegant, flowing lines and geometric details, the K900 introduces a modern air of elegance and gravitas to the large sedan segment. Kia’s designers were inspired by the ‘Gravity of Prestige’ design concept, which exudes strength through rich detail and solid surfaces.  Based conceptually on the changing shape of condensed energy, a new ‘Quadric pattern’ signature grille – seen for the first time – is the focal point of the K900. Embodying the K900’s design concept, the grille contains 176 jewel-like ‘cells’, suggestive of released energy accelerating away from its centre.

Lines in the high-strength steel bodywork flow naturally from the grille, rising over the hood and, in profile, sweeping through to the rear flanks before meeting at the back.

Elegant by design, and with a high-class, minimalist layout, the interior of the new K900 provides the driver and passengers with a peaceful retreat in which to spend time. Kia has also developed a series of more expressive features for occupants to enjoy.

It has created a refined and luxurious cabin which wraps around the driver, enhancing the sense of being cocooned from the outside world. Flowing from the centre of the dash and outwards to the doors, surfaces are trimmed in a sophisticated combination of materials, with soft-touch surfaces, a blend of highly tactile wood and metal veneers, and genuine leather throughout the interior.

The cabin is designed to offer greater space and comfort than ever before. The K900’s longer, wider exterior proportions provides a more spacious cabin for occupants than its predecessor, while seats are trimmed in genuine leather, with smooth and quilted surfaces enhancing the prestige aspect of the interior.

Geometric design details add an element of modernity and technology. Evoking the trajectory of light, the design of the ‘Duplex’ LED headlamps provides the K900 with a visually progressive, high-prestige image. In profile, a chrome flash adds visual depth to the smooth bodywork, running along the base of the doors and around the lower rear section of the K900. The chrome window-line adds a degree of technicality and structure to the free-flowing C-pillar before it merges with the rear deck. The tail lights and exhaust housings are also finished with fine chrome details.

A key element in the design of the K900 comes from its new platform and elongated proportions. Longer and wider than its predecessor, the wheelbase of the new model has been extended by 60mm (2.3 inches) to 3,105mm (122.2 inches), while both the front and rear overhangs are shorter, pushing the wheels further out to the corners of the car. This subtle change to the K900’s proportions is a strong expression of space, while underpinning improvements in ride quality and creating greater passenger room on the inside.

The K900’s 12.3-inch HMI screen is integrated in such a way as to enhance a sense of calm and serenity on-board, with a bezel-less display and simplified switchgear layout.

The HMI features a new intelligent lighting control with proximity sensors, only illuminating the dashboard when it detects the driver’s hand reaching for a switch. Drivers can also adapt the cabin of the new K900 to personal preferences with a new mood lighting system. The new K900 is the first car in the world to incorporate an ambient lighting system developed in partnership with the Pantone Color Institute, the global authority on colour. Customizable on the move, the subtle ambient lighting floods the interior in one of seven colours, jointly developed by Kia and the Pantone Colour Institute.

Drivers can also choose from 64 unique settings to adapt light levels throughout the car. Harmonising with the cabin’s design, the glow of the lights creates a truly contemporary ambience while providing stability and rest for K900 occupants.

  • Kia records 195,962 sales in February

Kia Motors Corporation announced its February 2018 global sales figures for passenger cars, recreational vehicles (RVs) and commercial vehicles, recording a total of 195,962 units sold, decreasing 9.1 per cent from 2017.

In February, sales in Korea totaled 37,005 units, representing a decrease of 5.5 per cent compared with the same month last year.

The company’s overseas sales also dropped by 9.9 per cent compared to the previous year, posting 158,957 units.

The decline in both Korea and overseas markets were largely due to the timing difference of the Lunar New Year (which fell in February 2018 vs. January 2017)

Kia’s best-selling model in the overseas markets during February 2018 was the Sportage compact SUV with 32,845 units sold. The Rio was the second best seller with 30,183 units sold, followed by the K3 compact sedan (known as ‘Forte’ in some markets) with 21,961 units sold.

The company plans to gain new momentum by revealing All-New Ceed, Ceed Sportswagon, and upgraded Optima at 2018 Geneva International Motor Show.

  • Kia wins three-design awards

    Kia wins three-design awards

Kia Motors has won three 2018 ‘iF design’ Awards, reinforcing the brand’s reputation for striking car design.

The new Kia Stinger fastback sports sedan, Stonic compact crossover and Picanto city car were awarded prizes in the ‘Product Design’ category.

The Stinger, designed at Kia’s European design centre in Frankfurt, Germany, marries classic gran tourismo design with a spacious and cosseting interior. Taking inspiration from the grand tourers of the 1970s, the Stinger features elegant fastback proportions and a muscular ‘coke bottle’ shape down its flanks, highlighting its rear-wheel biased power delivery.

Also designed in Frankfurt, the Stonic, Kia’s debut compact crossover, offers a striking and bold exterior design, combined with an elevated seating position and practical Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) format. Despite its compact dimensions, the Picanto’s intelligent design makes it one of the most spacious cars in its class.

Since it was launched in 1953, the iF design Award has become one of the world’s most important prizes for excellence in design. The award has its origins in the ‘Formgerechte Industrieerzeugnisse’ (Good Industrial Design) product shows initiated by the Hannover Messe and is now one of the world’s largest design competitions. In 2018, companies from 54 countries submitted 6,402 products to be judged by an independent international jury of 63 design experts.

The presentation for the 2018 iF Design Awards will take place on March 9 at BMW Welt in Munich, Germany.
