  • 26-year-old allegedly kills cousin over N500

    A 26-year-old man, simply identified as Chidiebere, at the weekend in Aba, Abia State, allegedly stabbed his cousin, Chisom, to death over N500.

    Chisom, 27, until his death last Friday, reportedly lived with his aunt (Chidiebere’s mother), who operates an eatery at the Ogbor Hill axis of Aba and was said to have shared a room with the suspect.

    The Nation learnt that last Thursday, Chisom’s aunt went to the market to buy items and asked the deceased to take charge of business while she was away.

    Immediately the mother went out, Chidiebere was reported to have entered her shop and asked Chisom to give him the N500 he learnt someone who owed his mother had paid.

    The deceased was said to have refused.

    Chidiebere reportedly insisted that the money must been given to him, and after an argument, the deceased agreed to give his cousin the money.

    It was gathered that when Chidiebere’s mother returned from the market, Chisom narrated what happened to her.

    A source close to the family said Chidiebere, who became angry because his cousin informed his mother about the matter, vowed to deal with him.

    The source said the deceased did not take the threat seriously and after supper, they went to bed.

    He said about 1am, Chidiebere woke up, reached for a dagger he hid in the room and stabbed his cousin, who was asleep, near his heart, twice.

    The incident was said to have occurred near Ebiogwu Street, Ogbor Hill.

    Neighbours took Chisom to a clinic on the Federal Housing Estate where the doctor on duty pronounced him dead.

    The Nation learnt that after stabbing his cousin to death, Chidiebere went back to sleep, not minding the consequences of his action.

    It was while he was still sleeping that youths from the Federal Housing Estate stormed the house, apprehended him and handed him over to the operatives at Azuka Police Station.

    The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) was not in when our reporter called.

    A senior police, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the incident.

    He said the matter had been transferred to Umuahia.

  • Man allegedly kills colleague over N47,000

    The Niger State Police Command on Tuesday arrested a suspect, ThankGod  Emmanuel, of Sauka – Kahuta area of Minna for allegedly killing his co-worker, Tita Komla.

    Komla and Emmanuel were said to be colleagues at a construction company in Minna.

    The Nation gathered that Emmanuel engaged his victim in a physical combat and killed him with digger after robbing the victim of N47,000 cash.

    Emmanuel confessed to have used the digger to inflict injuries on Komla’s head which eventually killed him before dumping the body inside the gutter.

    He said: “I killed him so that nobody will know that I stole his N47,000, I used digger to inflict injuries on head and he died instantly.

    “I least suspected that police will identify me as the one that killed the deceased, it is unfortunate. ”

    The suspect was apprehended by a team of policemen attached to Tundun Wada Division after receiving information from one Tete Joe who said Emmanuel called him that his brother (Komla) had been killed by unknown persons.

    Police spokesman, Muhammad Abubakar, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect confessed to have committed the crime.

    Abubakar also said that the deceased died from injuries on his head, adding that the suspect would be prosecuted soon.

  • Truck kills motorcyclist in Ondo

    Two men on a motorcycle yesterday rammed into a trailer laden with cartons of beer on Semusemu-Olokun-Agbaluku-Arigidi road in Ondo State.

    One of them died on the spot while the other is said to be on danger list at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owo, where he was transferred to from Ikare-Akoko State Specialist Hospital.

    The ill-fated truck, with registration number (Lagos) EPE304XR, is said to belong to a brewery firm.

    An eyewitness said the trailer was making a U-turn while the motorcyclist was on top speed until he lost control and rammed into the trailer.

    The incident occurred on the same spot where a timber lorry claimed four lives recently.

    The development created confusion among residents of the community.

    They urged the government, through the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, to build speed breakers on the road – from Semusemu-Olokun to Akoko Grammar School, Arigidi-Akoko – due to incessant accidents that claimed many lives in the area.

    The Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Ikare-Akoko, Jimoh Basiru, attributed the carnage to night driving and reckless attitude of the motorcyclist.

    He called for the use of helmets to protect head injury, in case of accidents.

    The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Okeagbe, Ibitayo Adetanrami, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said investigation had begun into the incident.

  • Boko Haram kills 13 people in fresh Borno attack

    Boko Haram insurgents have killed 13 people and sacked two villages overnight in the restive town of Konduga in Borno State, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

    The Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Bulama Biu, confirmed the attack yesterday in Maiduguri, the state capital.

    Biu said troops repelled the invaders, who he said had repeatedly attacked communities in Konduga Local Government Area for years.

    The GOC visited the attacked communities, Bularin and Kofa, including camps in the communities, housing thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

    “I was there. We recovered one body and saw burnt houses. Troops have been following up on the attackers,” Biu said.

    A member of a militia, known as Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), Alfred Audu, who claimed he was on duty at the time of the attack, said the insurgents engaged troops in a bid to force their way into the communities.

    Audu said the insurgents were pushed back when fighter planes were deployed to confront the invaders.

    Another eyewitness, who gave his name simply as Alhaji Modu, said hundreds of the insurgents on trucks with mounted guns and motorcycles attacked the communities at 7.45 p.m.

    Modu said the insurgents launched rocket attacks and forced their way into the IDP camps and attacked homes with ferocious fire.

    The eyewitness said nine people were killed at Bularin IDP Camp and three others in the Kofa IDP Camp.

    “An Islamic cleric, together with his wife and three children, were burnt to death when the insurgents sacked their home at Bularin IDP Camp.

    “They burnt down the village market, shops, houses, animals and vehicles. Many people died in the attack while others are still missing.

    “Bularin village was razed and several tents in the camp were destroyed. Many people were displaced in the attack,” Modu said.

    Boko Haram, which also operates in Cameroon, Chad and Niger, has persistently attacked communities in northern Nigeria, especially the country’s vast northeast.

    The Federal Government has said the insurgents have been decimated, although the group has been packing deadly punches over the years.

    Boko Haram launched its deadly campaign in 2009, vowing to enthrone a strict Islamic code in Africa’s most populous nation.

  • Housewife kills stepdaughter with otapiapia

    A 20-year-old woman, Zulac Kabiru, has confessed to killing her eight-month-old stepdaughter, Rukaiya, to teach her co-wife how to respect “her superior” by giving her local insecticide, otapiapia, to drink.

    Zulac, who was arrested by the police in Niger State for alleged killing at Danauta village in Mariga Local Government Area, said she took the action because the second wife was always insulting and assaulting her.

    The suspect was said to have secretly given the baby the poison, which resulted in her death.

    It was gathered that the suspect and her fellow wife had not been in good terms for a long time.

    Addressed reporters when she was paraded, Zulac said: “I warned my husband to desist from getting another wife but he did not listen. The second wife loved insulting and assaulting me at all times. One day, I decided to poison her eight-month-old daughter to increase her sorrow in the family so that she will learn how to respect her superiors in the family.

    “Before my husband married her, and I kicked against it, we were living in peace. But when she came, she split the family. My husband gave her more attention than he gave me. Snd since then, our family has been in shambles.”

    The suspect said she did not know when she carried out the act.

    According to her, it was the work of the devil.

    “It was the work of the devil. I don’t know when I did it. It is a wicked act,” she said.

    Police spokesman Muhammad Abubakar, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the suspect would be arraigned in court after investigation.

  • Air Force kills Boko Haram insurgents in Lake Chad

    The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) has killed more Boko Haram terrorists and destroyed their hideouts at Bukar Meram and Tumbun Allura, on the fringes of Lake Chad, after air interdictions by Operation Thunder Strike II, it was learnt yesterday.

    According to NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, the air strikes were conducted after intelligence and Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms established the presence of insurgents in the areas.

    Daramola, in a statement, said: “In continuation of Operation Thunder Strike II, the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole, yesterday (Monday), destroyed Boko Haram facilities and neutralised several insurgents at Bukar Meram and Tumbun Allura, on the fringes of Lake Chad, Borno State.

    “The attack at Bukar Meram was conducted based on intelligence that insurgents were sighted within the settlement, which was also confirmed by successive days of ISR missions.

    “Accordingly, the ATF detailed an  Alpha Jet aircraft and helicopter gunship to carry out air interdiction and two of the identified locations were destroyed.

    “Similarly, ISR missions showed that some terrorist were trying to regroup at another location in Tumbun Allura, after their bases in the settlement were destroyed on September 4.

    “Consequently, the identified location within the town was attacked and destroyed by NAF Alpha Jet and F-7Ni aircraft.

    “The NAF, working in concert with surface forces, will sustain the momentum of Operation Thunder Strike II to destroy vestiges of the insurgents in the Lake Chad green fringes.”

  • Man ‘kills’ Okada rider on farm in Ekiti

    There was confusion yesterday in Agbado Ekiti in Gbonyin Local Government Area of Ekiti State when a commercial motorcycle (Okada) operator was allegedly killed on a farm.

    The suspected killer, identified simply as Toyin, was said to have hired the service of the victim to convey him to his farm on Ode Road.

    The suspect allegedly overpowered the victim and hanged him with a rope before attempting to bury the body in a shallow grave.

    The screams of the victim were said to have attracted workers in a nearby factory who raised the alarm and arrested the suspect.

    It was unclear last night what caused the killing.

    It could also not be ascertained if there was quarrel between the duo.

    The deceased was said to have left behind a heavily pregnant wife.

    A source said: “Toyin was said to have gone to the terminal of the commercial motorbike operators in Agbado this morning (yesterday) and engaged the service of his victim to convey him to his farm, located in front of the shoemaking factory of the popular politician and former senator, Gbenga Aluko.

    “People who were at the factory told us that they learnt of the incident when they heard agonising cry of Toyin’s victim repeatedly and decided to check up what had happened.

    “It was then they allegedly met Toyin throwing the body of his victim into the freshly dug hole. He was apprehended and handed over to the nearest police station in the area.

    “The police have arrested Toyin with the body taken to their station.”

    Police spokesman Caleb Ikechukwu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said he had not been briefed on the incident.

    Ikechukwu promised to get back once he gets the details on the incident from Gbonyin Divisional headquarters.

     

  • Son allegedly kills 83-year-old father

    Enugu State Police Command has begun investigation into the alleged killing of a father by his son at Ojinato.

    Spokesman Ebere Amaraizu said in a statement in Enugu yesterday that the incident occurred on May 4.

    The statement said the suspect’s real name has not been established, but investigation is on.

    It said the deceased, Pa Nathaniel Chukwuemerie, 83, from Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government of Anambra State, was killed by his son, simply called ‘The Boy’.

    The statement said Chukwuemerie, who lived at Ojinato, “died when his son, identified as `The Boy’, smashed his father’s head with a pestle over a yet to be established issue.’’

    It said sympathisers took the victim to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead by a doctor.

    He said the body was deposited at Oji River General Hospital mortuary.

    “The suspect has been nabbed. According to information by a source, the suspect had been behaving abnormally, suggesting mental illness,’’ the statement added.

  • Rain storm kills 5, injures Catholic Priest, others

    No fewer than five people were killed and many others sustained various degrees of injuries by a rainstorm in Jalingo, Taraba State in the early hours of yesterday.

    The windstorm also destroyed several houses, offices, schools, police officers Mess, worship places among others.

    The Police Public Relations Officer in the state ASP David Misal confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jalingo.

    “Yes we can confirm that four people died opposite the Specialist Hospital, Jalingo when a mast fell on them due to the rain storm,” he said.

    He said with the level of destruction, it is possible that more people might be affected.

    Chairman Medical Advisory Committee of the Taraba Specialist Hospital, Jalingo, Dr Dashe Dasogot, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that five corpses were brought to the morgue of the hospital after the rainstorm.

    Dasogot, who showed NAN the affected buildings and trees in the hospital, added that two persons with various degrees of injuries were receiving treatment at the emergency unit of the hospital.

    “Four of the dead were from a GLO mast that fell opposite the gate of our hospital here and one other was brought from the town,” he said.

    An eyewitness, Mrs. Henrietta Anthony, told NAN that three of her cousins, Aisha Useni, Felicia Istifanus and Istiah James, were among the four people killed when a telecommunication mast fell on them during the rainstorm.

    Anthony, who operates a restaurant, opposite the gate of the hospital explained that her cousins left the house early for work in the restaurant when the incident occurred.

    “They finished cooking and were already to sell food to customers around 6:00 am when the rainstorm fell the mast behind the restaurant.

    “Three of them, including a customer, a driver to the state Commissioner for Water Resource, Emmanuel Gowon, who came to buy food died instantly.

    “Miss Konah Danjuma, who was also in the shop, sustained shoulder and head injuries,” she said.

    The Director of Communications of the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo,  Rev. Fr. John Jerome, also told NAN that the Chaplain of St. Thomas Aquinas Chaplaincy, Taraba State University,  Jalingo,  Rev. Fr. Pontianus Jaffla and seven university students sustained injuries when the temporary shelter serving as church fell on them.

    Jerome said that the priest and students of the University were in the morning Mass when the church collapsed due to a heavy storm that accompanied the early morning rain.

    “Rev. Fr. Pontianus sustained a head injury and was treated at the Federal Medical Centre Jalingo and discharged.

    “One of the students was also treated and discharged but the remaining six are still receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo,” he said.

    NAN also recalls that the first rain in Jalingo two weeks ago was also accompanied by rainstorm and destroyed many property, especially at the Taraba State University.

  • ‘Mentally-deranged man’ kills two pupils

    A man armed with a cutlass, suspected to be mentally-deranged, yesterday invaded St. John’s Anglican Primary School, Agodo, in Ogun Waterside Local Government of Ogun State and killed two pupils.

    The victims are Mubarak Kalesowo and Sunday Obituyi.

    There was pandemonium in the school, as pupils and teachers scampered for safety. Many fell and were injured.

    The suspect, identified as Lekan Adebisi, came to the school from a nearby bush during break when the pupils were playing.

    Sources said he fled the scene after the attack.

    As the news of the attack spread, panic-stricken parents and guardians rushed to the school to withdraw their children and wards.

    The police have launched a manhunt for the suspect.

    Spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident on the phone.

    He said security operatives led by the Area Commander and Divisional Police Officer, Abigi have been mandated to arrest the suspect.
