    Man allegedly kills father, injures mother

    A 27-year-old man, Ifeanyi Osita Oguejiofor, from Ezimuko Nsukwu in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government of Anambra State has allegedly killed his father,  Osita, with a with a knife.

    He allegedly injured his mother with the same knife.

    The Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Ogidi Division, Mr. Mark Ijarafu, who confirmed the incident, told The Nation yesterday that the suspect had been arrested.

    He said investigation was on.

    Ijarafu noted that the suspect had no mental problems, “although neighbours said he smokes Indian hemp.”

    It was learnt that trouble started on the day about 8am when the man, a commercial motorcyclist (okada rider), demanded money from his father to buy a new motorcycle, since, according to him, the one he was using had become old.

    Our source said his father told him that he had no money, since he had just bought him a new engine to replace the old one in the motorcycle.

    The source said the suspect did not like his father’s response. He went to the kitchen, took a knife, which he used to stab his father to death.

    The eyewitness said the suspect also attacked his mother, who screamed for help.

    He added: “The woman reportedly fell down. The suspect thought she had died and in a bid to escape punishment, he tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself in the chest.

    “The woman shouted for help and this attracted passers-by and neighbours, who alerted a vigilance group and the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Ijarafu, who went to the scene with his Divisional Crime Officer, Mr. Fidelis Eyisi.”

    The suspect confessed: “I did what my spirit told me to do.”

    Ijarafu said the body had been taken to Iyi-Enu Mission Hospital mortuary in Ogidi, while the woman had been hospitalised.

    He added: “The suspect is in our detention. Investigation is on. He will be arraigned after investigation.”

  • Truck kills security man

    A truck bearing granite yesterday morning killed a security man after veering off its lane at the Obantoko stretch of the Abeokuta – Ibadan road and ramming into a building.

    The truck marked LSD 308 XG was said to have run into the security chalet, damaged it and killing the security man inside.

    The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident, said the truck had a break failure and rammed into the security post of the building before killing the security man.

    “There was a brake failure on the part of the Iveco truck loaded with granite having white head and blue bucket with registration number LSD 308 XG. It rammed into the security chalet of a building.

    “A security man of the said building died and his remains have been taken to the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.”

    A 47-year-old man,   Edwin Ojinnaka Nnodiogo, last saturday in Awada layout, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government of Anambra State killed his four children, sister and committed suicide.

    The incident occurred about 8:50pm.

    The Nation learnt that Edwin was from Isu Njaba in Imo State.

    His 32-year-wife, who is  in police protection, was not around when the incident happened.

    The victims are Ogechi Ukonu, 16; Mmesoma Nnodiogo, 10; Chimaobi Nnodiogo, 8; Chima Nnodiogo, 4 and Chidiogo Nnodiogo, 2.

    It was gathered that Edwin just returned from overseas.

    An eyewitness said Edwin, who had been manifesting signs of mental instability, allegedly stabbed his four children to death while the wife was not at home.

    “He was on top of the maid, who was screaming, and this drew the wife’s and neighbour’s attention,” he said.

    It was learnt that Edwin sent one of their maids to get drugs and water for him.

    Policemen have been deployed in the area.

    Spokesperson Nkeiruka Nwode, who confirmed the incident, described it as “calamitous.”

    She said the incident happened on the 4th floor of the five-storey building, adding that the place had been shut.

    The knife Edwin used on the victims and drugs were recovered.

    Nwode said the bodies had been taken to a morgue, adding that the command was awaiting autopsy.

    She said investigation was  on.

    Mob sets two trucks ablaze after one kills man, two children on way to school

    The sleepy Oru town in Ijebu – North Local Government Area of Ogun State boiled on Friday morning as irate mob seized the Ijebu – Ibadan road and launched  attacks on all trucks carrying  sand or granite over the killing of road users by one of the trucks.

    The raging mob were reacting to the “reckless crushing to death” in the morning, of a man and his two children by one of the trucks carrying granite.

    The man and children were ridding on a motorcycle on their way to school when the accident occurred.

    The truck driver who was  trying to avoid a collision with another vehicle along the bustling Ijebu – Ode – Ibadan road, veered – off track and crushed the man and his children, a witness, told The Nation.

    The incident , it was learnt,  angered the people who quickly massed – up at the scene, and began to vent their anger on trucks and their drivers that  passed by at the time.

    The particular truck that killed father and children, was swiftly burnt along with two of its occupants,  while another truck passing by was also burnt.

    The truck is said to be on the fleet of the haulage trucks of a major cement manufacturing company in Ogun State based on the inscription and trade mark on its body.

    The Nation gathered that the accident triggered  pandemonium in Oru and the surrounding communities even as it also caused a huge traffic gridlock on Ijebu – Ode – Ibadan road, spilling into the adjoining ones, as fear – stricken motorists struggled to escape the troubled spot.

    A source in Oru said the Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC), Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) the Nigeria Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC), Vigilante Service of Ogun State(VSO) and the police laboured to contain the chaos, clear traffic gridlock and evacuate the victims of the  truck – motorcycle accident.

    Men of the Rivers State Police command yesterday averted a crisis in Rumuokoro junction area of Port Harcourt, the capital.

    A police officer escorting a tanker laden with substance suspected to be illegal crude oil shot and killed a taxi driver, simply identified as Bright, and escaped.

    Eyewitnesses said: ‘’The truck ran into traffic at the junction. The police escort got off to clear the road. The victim tried to make way for the truck.

    Continuing, they said:  ‘’While the officer was trying to break the mirror on the driver’s side with the nozzle of his cocked gun, the bullet went off, killing the driver instantly.

    Fearing a mob action, he ran away.

    Angry onlookers staged a riot, insisting that the body will not be moved until the escort is produced.

    They blocked roads leading to University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, the one leading to Obio/ Akpor LGA as well as the road leading to Mile 3, causing serious traffic in the area.

    Youths marched to the nearby Rumuokoro police station in protest.

    Attempts by the police to recover the remains, failed. Over 10 truckloads of policemen were later deployed to the scene to clear the crowd.

    Relatives of the victim  could not stop crying. Efforts to speak them failed.

    Police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy superintendent of Police(DSP), confirmed the incident but said the officer, a mobile policeman, was not from the command.

    He said he learnt he was on special duty and that efforts were being made to unravel his identity.

    A retired Major, Afisatu Ajuya has been killed and her body set ablaze alongside her apartment.

    The crime was on committed on Sunday by a guard she employed.

    It was gathered that the guard whose identity was yet to be ascertained invited eight other persons to join him to commit the crime.

    Witnesses said the suspects also made away with some of their victim’s belongings.

    They said the gang broke into the apartment of the retired Army Officer in the early hours of Sunday, strangled and set her ablaze before making away with items like electric fan, luggage, jewelleries and phones.

    The suspects have been arrested and transferred to the State Police headquarters with some of the items recovered from them.

    Police Commissioner Babatunde Kokumo said it was a case robbery, arson and murder.

    Kokumo said the suspects killed their victim and set fire on the place to make it look like the victim died from the fire incident.

    A robber killed his partner during a foiled robbery attack on Francis Chibueze, on Bakery road, Azikoro, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.

    State Police Command spokesman Asinim Butswat told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the robber mistakenly shot and killed his partner.

    “On December 22, at about 8 p.m, a gang of two armed robbers attacked Francis Chibueze of Bakery Road, Azikoro Village, Yenagoa.

    “As they were trying to attack their victim, one the robbers mistakenly shot and killed his partner, while the victim, Chibueze, escaped unhurt.

    “The deceased armed robber was identified as Thankgod Smith, 25, and the partner who shot him is Peter Napoleon, 23,’’ Butswat told NAN.

    He said the suspect came to the Azikoro Police Station on December 23, and turned himself in.

    The spokesman said the suspect confessed to the robbery and killing of his partner.

    “The suspected armed robber led Police detectives to an uncompleted building on Bakery Road, Azikoro Village, where the gun was recovered,” he said.

  • Corporal kills driver over N50 bribe

    A police Corporal attached to the Ekiti State Police Command, Ayodele Famodimu, has allegedly shot a commercial driver to death at a checkpoint in Oye-Ekiti.

    Sources said Olabode Ojo Segun was coming from Ikare-Akoko in Ondo State and heading to Ilorin, Kwara State capital.

    Eyewitnesses told The Nation yesterday that the incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, caused pandemonium in Oye-Ekiti.

    The policeman reportedly demanded a bribe of N50 from the commercial driver, which he refused to give.

    The angry policeman then opened fire on the driver, who was the only one hit in the bus.

    Frightened passengers crawled out of the bus, which skidded off the road and somersaulted.

    The sources said that the Olukare of Ikare, Oba Akadiri Momoh, called the Ekiti Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to get a first-hand report.

    Eyewitnesses said: “After the driver was hit, he lost control and the bus somersaulted.

    “He was lying dead on the scene. In the confusion, every person crawled out of the vehicle, seeking help.”

    FRSC spokesman Mohammed Olowo said only the driver was shot.

    Olowo added that there were no critical injuries, pointing out that a hospital call the morning after did not register any critical injury.

    Police spokesman Alberto Adeyemi said the command had commenced an orderly-room trial for the corporal.

    Adeyemi, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said that Famodimu would be charged to court after the orderly-room.

    He said: “The suspect is already facing departmental orderly room trial, his name is Corporal Ayodele Famodimu and his departmental orderly room trial has already started.

    “When the trial has been concluded, he would be dismissed after which he would be charged to court.”

  • ‘Madman’ kills two pupils in Borno

    A Suspected madman has killed two pupils at a primary school in Kwayar Kusar Local Government Area of Borno State, it was learnt yesterday.

    A statement by the police spokesman, Victor Isuku, said the killing was done by a man ‘suspected to be of unsound mind’.

    According to Isuku, the suspect, about 9.30 am yesterday, entered Jafi Primary School, armed with a machete, and killed two male pupils. A female teacher was injured.

    His action angered youths, who almost killed him before he was rescued by the police, unconscious.

    The statement reads: “Today (yesterday), about 09.30hrs, one Gaji Adamu ‘male’ of Kubu village in Kwaya Kusar council, suspected to be of unsound mind and armed with a machete, entered into Jafi Primary School, Kwaya Kusar, and killed two male pupils. A teacher and a female pupil were wounded in the attack.

    “Following this, irate youths mobbed the suspect, who is now unconscious and admitted in hospital under protective custody.

    “The bodies and injured have been evacuated to Gombe General Hospital. The Commissioner of Police, Damian Chukwu, has directed the Divisional Police Officer of Kwaya Kusar Division to transfer the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID) for a discreet investigation and to determine his mental state.”

  • Apprentice ‘kills’ colleague

    A 21-year-old apprentice, Chibuike Emmanuel, has allegedly stabbed his colleague, Chika Nwankwo, 25, to death.

    The incident occurred at a car upholstery workshop at Aja Street, Aba, Abia State.

    The Nation learnt that the victim was certified dead by the doctor at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Aba.

    Eyewitnesses attributed the death to excessive bleeding.

    While some alleged that Emmanuel stabbed Nwankwo in the shoulder with a pair of scissors, others alleged that Nwankwo was stabbed in the neck with a knife during a misunderstanding.

    It was gathered that the previous day, Emmanuel lent N200 to Nwankwo, who promised to repay the next day.

    The Nation learnt that trouble ensued after attempts by Emmanuel to make Nwankwo repay the debt failed.

    The victim was reportedly in the police custody.

    Spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna could not be reached last night for comments.
