  • LET’S BUILD OUR BEVERLY HILLS IN NIGERIA –KUNLE AFOLAYAN

KUNLE Afolayan is a name that needs no introduction as Nigeria’s rave-of-the-moment filmmaker. The scion of doyen of Nigerian theater; Ade Love, had dumped a promising banking career to go into movies and he is today reaping the fruits of his labour. Yesterday, the movie maker took to Instagram to post photos and a video of his swanky home, replete with all the comforts of a Beverly Hill’s mansion; a swimming pool, choice automobiles, and lots more. The video has songstress, Asa, playing to the effect.

Apparently joyful, Afolayan gave his reason for uploading the video for all to see.

He said: “Hmmmm! Some people may see this as show off but the wise will see beyond the surface. My main motive of putting this video out is first to appreciate the goodness of God in my life but majorly to use it as a medium to minister and encourage every hardworking Nigerian out there that if you put your mind to what you believe in, be realistic in your approach and deal with people with one mind then you are surely not far from your goal and you surely will get there even though it may take time”.

Continuing, he said: “The dream of an average Nigerian in the entertainment industry is to live like the well to do American artist (Beverly Hills). Let us all work towards building our own Beverly Hills in Nigeria. I say thank you to God and all you fans out there for your tremendous support thus far, and I pray and wish everyone of us our heart desires. this, and I got it, surely you can too. Ire”

  • KUNLE AFOLAYAN HOLDS PRESS SCREENING FOR ‘THE CEO’

FOR 45 minutes, man of the moment filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan screened his latest production, The CEO, to the members of the fourth estate, eliciting testimonies of another blockbuster to have come out of Nigeria.

Held at the Silverbird Cinema, City Mall, Alausa, Ikeja, on Wednesday the screening was also witnessed by fans, friends, and sponsors who cheered every moment as the tape rolled.

Speaking after the press screening, Afolayan revealed details of the much anticipated in-flight premiere of The CEO aboard an Air-France trip to Paris, where the film will headline the prestigious NollywoodWeek Paris, a film festival organized by the French-based association Okada Media, headed by Serge Noukoué and Nadira Shakur.

Come June 1, he said, his team shall be having the first-of-its-kind premiere of The CEO aboard Air France to Paris, France.

“This special premiere will begin with a Red Carpet show at the Check-In Counter at the Muritala Mohammed International Airport. There shall be the best of media coverage from partners such as Africa magic, Silverbird Television and other broadcast and print media who have shown us tremendous support from the past. For our sponsors, partners, the cast and crew of The CEO and those accredited to attend NollywoodWeek Paris, the fun continues with a Cocktail Party at the Boarding Gate. We will run a red carpet into the plane. Thereafter, the movie will be screened onboard the plane where other passengers will partake in the show. It is going to be a complete event show with the usual razzmatazz. Just imagine an After Party happening 35,000ft to 40,000ft above the sea level. It is sure going to be a unique experience. It is also good to know that our fans will be waiting for us in Paris where the film has been slated for a special premiere at the NollywoodWeek Paris, taking place from May 2nd to 5th at the popular Cinema l’Arlequin,” Afolayan said.

Corroborating Afolayan’s disclosure on the premiere, Commercial Manager, Air France/KLM Arthur Dieffenthaler noted that there had never been an in-flight premiere of such, even in Hollywood or Bollywood. The initiative, according to him represents some of the big ideas that Air France/KLM and Afolayan’s Golden Effects company stand for. He disclosed that this is the first time a Nigerian film will be shot at the Charles De Gaulle Airport, Paris, France, expressing optimism that the partnership will go on for a long time.

Some of the top dignitaries expected as part of the in-flight premiere are the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, Commercial Manager, Air France/KLM Arthur Dieffenthaler and Acting Managing Director of Bank of Industry, Mr. Waheed Olagunju.

Others include officials of DStv, Peugeot Automobile, Adron Homes and Properties, Inagbe Grand Resorts and Leisure as well as several notable filmmakers and actors in Nollywood.

The impressive cast of The CEO who will also be joining the flight in Lagos include, Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and entertainer from Benin Republic, Angélique Kidjo; Haitan actor and model Jimmy Jean-Louis; consummate actor, Wale Ojo; French-Ivorian actress and model, Aurelie Eliam; South African actor and presenter, Nicolaos Panagiotopoulos; Nigerian actress, Kemi Lala Akindoju; Moroccan star, Fatim Layachi; Kenyan actor Peter King, Nigerian actress, Hilda Dokubo as well as  Nigerian singer, Adekunle Gold and Moroccan Afrobian artiste, Ahmed Soultan who made cameo appearances in the film.

Speaking at the conference, the Director, M-Net West Africa, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu said: “The CEO promises to be unlike anything we have ever seen from Africa. We are familiar with the stellar work that Kunle Afolayan does with his Golden Effects company and were therefore more than excited to jump on board The CEO project right from its inception. This partnership is in furtherance of our continued drive to support Nigerian and African cinema by investing in people, ideas and talent, and we can’t wait for fans and lovers of good cinema to watch this movie.”

Set on a beautiful beach resort on the outskirts of Lagos, Nigeria, The CEO follows five top executives from across Africa who are dispatched on a one-week leadership retreat by a multinational telecommunications firm to determine who gets selected as the new CEO. Things go awry when one by one the executives are eliminated in sudden death circumstances, with the finger pointing to the last two remaining executive as prime suspects.

    Kunle Afolayan flaunts home cinema

For a movie buff, what’s more special than having your own cinema? Ace actor and filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has done just that. In an Instagram post, Afolayan showed a picture of his mini-cinema which he built in his house.

“Out of my passion for cinema and motion pictures, I created a cinema in my house,” wrote Afolayan whose latest production is The CEO while his other production includes Irapada, Phone Swap, Figurine  and October 1.

“You are all welcome to private screenings.”

According to the filmmaker, the cinema, which can seat 11 people, is a digital projection cinema with 7.1 surround sound.

Also recently, Afolayan published on Youtube an extract from a documentary he shot in Rio, Brazil, which according to him ‘shows the value and richness of Yoruba culture and beliefs. In it, he interviews Gisele Omidarewa Cossard, an Iya Orisa, who talks to Afolayan on the various spaces in the shrine and how the practitioners conduct their ceremonies.

  • KUNLE AFOLAYAN WOOS AIR FRANCE/KLM FOR AFRICAN CINEMA

KUNLE AFOLAYAN WOOS AIR FRANCE/KLM FOR AFRICAN CINEMA

HE was the only black man among commercial directors of popular France airline, Air France and Dutch partner, KLM, and didn’t need to speak so hard about the creative ingenuity in Africa. They watched clips from his new film, The CEO and were swept away. This lent credence to his two-hour talk about the many untapped potentials in the African market.

Kunle Afolayan, a notable Nigerian filmmaker was the cynosure of all eyes for the 15 commercial directors of the partner airlines who flew into Amsterdam, Netherlands from different parts of Africa on Tuesday.  “We discussed film and the possibilities of taking African cinema to the next level. They wanted to know how I’ve been able to sustain ground-breaking projects and see the possibility of adopting this in other African countries,” he told newsmen upon arrival at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.  I also unveiled our plans for the premiere of The CEO across Africa which they found laudable,” he said.

The meeting also had Senior Vice President, Africa, Air France/KLM, M r. Frank Legre in attendance.

Recall that on July 29, 2015, Afolayan was signed as brand ambassador Air France, with the deal covering The CEO movie and several projects of mutual benefits.

The recent release of the trailer for The CEO, kicked off promotions for the Pan-African movie which stars top actors from Anglophone and Francophone countries, including Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, entertainer and activist Beninois, Angélique Kidjo, Haitan actor and model Jimmy Jean-Louis; consummate actor and founder of the New Nigeria Cinema movement, Wale Ojo; French-Ivorian actress and model, Aurelie Eliam; South African actor and presenter, Nicolaos Panagiotopoulos; Nigerian actress, Kemi Lala Akindoju; Moroccan star, Fatim Layachi; Kenyan actor Peter King, and Nigerian actress Hilda Dokubo, among others.

The trailer carries punchy snippets of the movie scenes from different African countries, including Paris, France, where the film pooled its cast.

Apparently swayed by the filmmaker’s ingenuity, veteran film producer, Tade Ogidan barred his mind in a letter to the former recently.

He said: “I woke up quite excited about the story-telling strength, and the creative and technical qualities in the CEO movie. You have done your dad proud with each new project. You have done your family proud. You have done your industry proud. You have done your fore bearers in the film industry proud. You will do your nation, and the rest of Africa proud, especially with this new project; CEO. I am sincerely proud of you.

“You are now like a bull that has charged into a chinaware shop of film obstacles. You demolish all the myths, fears, and film making challenges with insane daring, grit, and unstoppable determination. Now, that is good. God will always make all good things doable for you.”

The CEO is expected to be released in the cinemas in July. Afolayan however said that there will be series of private screenings ahead of the official release date.

  • Kunle Afolayan celebrates Angelique Kidjo over Grammys

Kunle Afolayan celebrates Angelique Kidjo over Grammys

As the annual Grammys Award held Monday night at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, United States, Africa was not left out of the celebration – Beninoise singer, Angelique Kidjo won the best world music album of the year.

The New York-based singer who stars in Kunle Afolayan’s latest movie, The CEO, won the award for her Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg collaboration, Sings. Her album beat one by Malawi’s Zomba Prison Project and South Africa’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

“I want to dedicate this Grammy to all the traditional musicians in Africa, in my country, to all the young generation,” said Kidjo who has won the award for the second consecutive year.

The album merges African song writing and rhythms with European classical instrumentation, a fusion on which Kidjo has repeatedly experimented.

Kidjo described the album as an artistic challenge as traditional African bands follow the lead of the soloist much more closely, unlike Western orchestras that generally play off refined scores.

Nigeria’s filmmaker Kunle Afolayan’s phone has not stopped ringing since the announcement, in view of the prominent role played by the singer in The CEO whose official trailer has been trending in the last three weeks.

“I am super excited and happy to announce and celebrate with our own Angélique Kidjo for winning the Grammy awards the third time. We at Golden Effects, KAP motion pictures and the entire cast and crew of #TheCEOmovie movie say “CONGRATULATIONS,” Afolayan said via a social media broadcast.

The singer, who has worked for a long time with Philip Glass, a leading US composer, said Africa was on the rise.

“Africa is positive, Africa is joyful,” she said after collecting the award.

The 55-year-old singer added that she has been fighting for a positive image of Africa for a long time and believed music could connect the world and served as a tool for peace.

Popular singers, Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar, were among the biggest winners at the 58th Grammy Awards. Swift became the first woman to win album of the year twice, the second feat coming from her official switch from country to pop with her multi-hit, best-selling “1989” album. She beat Kendrick Lamar, Chris Stapleton, Alabama Shakes and The Weeknd to grab the night’s top prize.

She also walked away with two other laurels; best pop vocal album and music video for “Bad Blood”.

Recall that the singer won the album of the year Grammy for “Fearless” in 2009.

“There will be people along the way that will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. You just focus on the work and don’t let those people sidetrack you,” she said while receiving her album of the year award.

Industry watchers say her speech could be directed partly to Kanye West, who recently said in a new song that he made Swift famous after he stole her microphone at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

Lamar was the night’s big winner with five awards. He won best rap album for “To Pimp a Butterfly” as well as rap performance, rap song, rap/sung performance and music video. Alabama Shakes also won three awards.

Meanwhile, R&B superstar, Rihanna had to cancel her performance few minutes before the show. Her rep told US Weekly the reason for the last-minute decision was due to her health.

“Based on Rihanna’s examination, after Grammy rehearsal today, Rihanna’s doctor put her on vocal rest for 48-hours because she was at risk of haemorrhaging her vocal cords,” said her rep who added that “The antibiotics she has been on for 3-days did not kill the infection adequately therefore she cannot perform safely.”

The singer was noticeably missing in action on the red carpet at the Staples Center where reporters awaited her arrival.

  • OGD’s Val note to Kunle Afolayan

IN these times of opinionated letters to the National Assembly, the President, and other decision makers, veteran filmmaker Tade Ogidan’s thoughts about Kunle Afolayan was conveyed in a short letter that spoke volumes. Coming in the month of Valentine, it comes across as a love letter, frankly written after sleeping over its subject matter.

To grasp Ogidan’s simplicity and positive disposition for young and creative entrepreneurs, one needs to follow Teju Babyface’s show. You cannot but smile to how Teju throws pleasant jibes at the man who gave him his first movie role in the 1998 film, Diamond Ring.  Even as the producer of the Teju Babyface Show, Teju would often say cynically: “Tade Ogidan is my boy”  –  it just shows how a father makes his children his friends.

I’m motivated to write this about the man many people call OGD. Although he does not know me closely, I find his life and style motivating, especially in the Nollywood space where even ‘veteran’ filmmakers see their younger colleagues (described in some quarters as the New Nollywood) as their rivals. Interestingly, it is like that for ace cinematographer, Tunde Kelani whom Afolayan often refers to as a mentor. Suffice to say that a victory for the young Afolayan is a victory for Kelani and Ogidan, and perhaps other veterans, who may choose to see the former as one of the princes of the Nigerian filmmakers’ large family.

I first got a hint of Ogidan’s fondness for Afolayan after the younger filmmaker inked a deal with Air France as a Brand Ambassador. OGD was so excited for Kunle, that he didn’t just call to congratulate the young man, but staged a surprise soiree at his Surulere home, inviting other celebrities to a cake cutting event, where they toasted the feat recorded by this son of the legendary ‘Ade Love’.

The cake came in white and sky blue, bearing Afolayan’s picture, and on it was written: ‘Kunle Afolayan, Tade celebrates you’. That, I believe was for his award-winning films, including Irapada, Figurine, Phone Swap, and October 1.

Fast forward to Thursday, February 4, 2016, after seeing the rough cuts of The CEO; Afolayan’s latest work, ODG wrote a love letter, full of prayers and a personal endorsement of the young filmmaker.

He started on a comical note, obviously appreciative of the previous day’s camaraderie and sharing of a local meal: “…thank you for the lovely Amala meal that you treated us to. I just must not forget that one,” he said in a short message.

“I woke up quite excited about the story-telling strength, and the creative and technical qualities in the CEO movie.

Afolayan recently released the trailer of The CEO, kicking off promotions for the Pan-African movie.

The trailer carries punchy snippets of the movie scenes from different African countries, including Paris, France, where the film pooled its cast.

The CEO is Afolayan’s biggest movie yet, with part funding of N50 million as loan from the much publicised Bank of Industry’s NollyFund.

With the 2min:30sec trailer, first released on Channels TV website, views and downloads had, within 12 hours, hit a million mark on YouTube,  Facebook, and other social media platforms, an indication of fans’ eagerness for the cross cultural movie.

The CEO is coming on the heels of October 1, Afolayan’s psychological thriller, and his fourth effort after Irapada, Figurine, and Phone Swap.

Interestingly, a Cote d’Ivoirean cinema is yearning for a July 2016 release date, and has sent their terms, coming from the country’s popular distributors, Majestic Cinemas. Afolayan revealed that the film, which will be ready before the end of February will be distributed in Nigeria by Silverbird Cinema, just as it is also targeting South Africa’s over 50 cinemas, and other African countries. He added that preparations are on ground for massive festival routing beginning from the first quarter of this year.

Just like OGD, I am enthralled by this feat, and convinced that Afolayan will go places. Yet I am motivated by Tade Ogidan’s show of love, and wish that other Nollywood veterans will show the younger ones similar love, send them words of encouragement, and consider their films as a Nigerian project.

Coming from a man who has done so well himself in the movie industry, this action spells humility – how many Nigerian films can compete with OGD’s Owo Blow (1997), Out of Bounds (1997), Hostages (1998), Diamond Ring (1998), Saving Alero (2001), Ayomida (2003), Playing games (2012), Dangerous Twins (2004), Aya mi òwòn: Madam Dearest (2005) and Family on Fire (2011)?

The CEO: Ogidan excited about Afolayan’s creativity

A veteran’s account of Kunle Afolayan’s current film project, The CEO, has indicated that another blockbuster movie is about to come out of Nigeria.

Conveying is impression via a private message sent to the filmmaker on Thursday, Nigerian screenwriter, cinematographer, film director and producer Tade Ogidan said: “I woke up quite excited about the story telling strength and the creative and technical qualities in the CEO movie. You have done your dad proud with each new project. You have done your family proud. You have done your industry proud. You have done your fore bearers in the film industry proud. You will do your nation and the rest of Africa proud, especially with this new project, CEO. I am sincerely proud of you.”

OGD as he is fondly called inked his excitement, after seeing a rough cut of the pan-African film at Afolayan’s studio on Bayo Kuku Street, Ikeja, Lagos, praising the courage of the filmmaker in the face of the challenges confronting the Nigerian film industry.

He said: “You are now like a bull that has charged into a chinaware shop of film obstacles. You demolish all the myths, fears and film making challenges with insane dare, grit and unstoppable determination. Now, that is good. God will always make all good things doable for you.”
