Spokesperson of the institution, Halimat Garba, said the suspects withdrew from the institution because they could not cope with the academic demands.

She said: “Our database checks showed that the two ladies had since been withdrawn from the school after their first years for poor academic performances. They have therefore, ceased being students of our great institution.

“The polytechnic management states categorically that its students are good ambassadors of the institution, the state, and Nigeria at large, and will not be involved in shameful or criminal acts of any kind.”

  • Tension in Kwara poly over appointment of rector

ANXIETY is brewing on the two campuses of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, over who succeeds outgoing Rector Ma’sud Elelu.

Tenure of Elelu as the rector of the over 40-years-old institution ends in June.

Staff and students of the institution are spoiling for a showdown with the school management and the state government for allegedly surreptitiously planning to appoint an outsider as the next rector of the polytechnic.

The school had on March 25, this year, advertised for the position of rector.

Accordingly, some staff and students of the institution have threatened to embark on a peaceful protest over the outgoing rector’s decision.

The students’ leader, Kayode Rafiu, said the protest would take place tomorrow.

Rafiu said the protest became necessary due to shabby appointment processes for the new rector.

He alleged that Governor AbdulFatai Ahmed had perfected plans to bring in an outsider as the head of the polytechnic, adding that there are many competent lecturers, who were next in line to the outgoing rector.

  • Kwara Poly didn’t fund Saraki’s campaigns, says govt

THE Kwara State government has described rumours that the state-owned polytechnic in Ilorin funded Senate President Bukola Saraki’s previous political campaigns as false and illogical.

The state government also absolved Saraki of any involvement in the planned appointment of a new rector for the polytechnic and the Kwara State University (KWASU) Vice Chancellor.

Commissioner for Tertiary Education Utaz A. Alikinla dismissed the claims as outright falsehood, stressing that only Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has the authority to make such appointments.

The commissioner said the recruitment of the new heads of the institutions would follow due process such as advertisement of vacancies three months to the expiration of tenure, followed by the selection process after which the governor will approve the appointment on the Governing Council’s recommendation.

Alikinla said in line with this procedure, the process for the recruitment of a new rector for the polytechnic commenced on Monday, March 25, 2019 with the advertisement of the vacancy in The Herald and Punch Newspapers.

According to him, the vacancy was advertised as the incumbent’s tenure expires June, this year.

As governance abhors a vacuum, he said, the administration started the recruitment in line with due process even though its tenure is ending.

He added that as the tenure of the current vice chancellor of KWASU ends next July, the recruitment of his replacement is yet to commence.

Alikinla also denied claims that a former Chairman of Kwara Poly’s Governing Council contributed funds to the Senate President’s electioneering campaign in 2011, adding that there was no record of any such transaction in the state government’s or the institution’s records, neither is there any record an approval by any organ or official of the institution to that effect.

  • Kwara poly urged to cut tuition by N5,000

Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has urged the management of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, to cut its tuition by N5,000.

The governor’s directive followed recent complaints and controversies on the alleged fee increment at the polytechnic.

A statement by his media aide, Muideen Akorede, said a reduction in the tuition was in recognition of the current economic challenges in the country.

Ahmed, who noted concerns expressed by stakeholders, said the school maintained the fees charged in the 2016/2017 academic session, and reduced the fees for the new session by N5,000.

The statement reads: “Our government has become aware of complaints by students, parents and stakeholders of the Kwara State Polytechnic, regarding the alleged fee increment.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the school has not only maintained the fees charged in the 2016/2017 acadmic session, it has reduced fees payable in the new session by N5,000.

“Nevertheless, I have noted concerns by stakeholders, including Senate President Abubakar Saraki, about students, guardians and parents’ capability to pay the specified fees.

“Having considered the above and recognising the current economic challenges facing families in the country, I, hereby, urge the management to reduce its current fees by N5,000.”

Saraki intervenes in Kwara poly fee hike crisis

Senate President Bukola Saraki has intervened in the alleged tuition hike crisis in the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.

The school management has insisted it did not increase the tuition but students continue to protest, alleging “outrageous increment in tuition”.

Saraki, in a statement, agreed with the students, saying information at his disposal showed an upward review of the tuition.

He urged students and parents to remain calm, assuring them that the government will revisit the issue.

“Just this morning, students from my constituency sent me details of the fees that the registrar released for the 2017/2018 academic session through Whatsapp.

“After reviewing it, I found out that there has been a deliberate attempt to confuse and mislead the government and the public.

“It is obvious that a second year student in 2017/18 session is expected to pay N20,000 more than second year students paid in the 2016/17 session. This is contrary to claims contained in the statement released by the institution last week.

“With the present economic situation, this increment is unacceptable. I stand by my earlier position that education must be affordable for every willing citizen, because it is the bedrock of development. Any increment in the fees must be stopped now.

“I appeal to the students and their families to remain calm. I am sure the government will revisit this issue.

“Thank you to all the students who spoke with me on the phone this morning and helped to provide additional insight on this issue.”

  • No fee hike, says Kwara Poly

The Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has debunked rumours of hike in its tuition.

The rumours have generated tension as some people reportedly told students to resist the hike.

According to rumours, a new tuition of N75,000, as against N58,000 last session, was posted on the school’s portal.

Both the government and school management condemned the rumour and those allegedly inciting students to protest.

Commissioner for Information and Communications Babatunde Ajeigbe, said a government delegation, led by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Amina Mohammed, met with the school management and their findings showed it was only a rumour on the social media.

According to him, there was no increase of fee for returning students. This was corroborated by an HND 2 student at a meeting; he paid the same N58,000 of last session.

Ajeigbe, however, explained that the institution has not yet determined the tuition for new students (ND 1 and HND 1).

He said this would be determined by present realities.

“We need to be careful in order not to admit students who had been expelled from other institutions and as well authenticate their certificates,” he said.

Asked if the screening would be free, Elelu declared that it would have “financial some financial implication.”

The rector added that the institution would soon begin a clamp down on operators of cyber cafés on its campus, following the arrest of one of them with the school’s forged audit stamp and document carrying forged signature.

He said the cyber café operator was arrested following intelligence gathering from the institution’s internal security network.

The suspect, he said had been handed over to the department of State Security Services (DSSS) for further investigation.

Elelu warned that any staff or students found culpable in the issue would not be spared.
