    Nigerians cautioned against hate speech

Kwara State  Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Olusegun Adeyemi,  has advised Nigerians to shun divisive and inciting comments that could cause disaffection among ethnic groups in the country.

Adeyemi gave the advice in a release made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Tuesday.

“NOA is concerned that the social fabric of Nigeria is being ruined with careless and unguarded statements by individuals and groups.

“Crisis lies ahead of us, if we do not halt hate speeches and conducts now,” the NOA director added.

According to him, most of the uprisings, tribal wars, religious crisis and ethnic clashes the country experienced in the past were due to intolerance, hate pronouncements and hate conduct by leaders and citizens.

Adeyemi, therefore, urged all Nigerians to be mindful of the people they listened to and the statements they make on social media.

He emphasized that the strength of Nigeria as a nation lies in its unity and assured that the Federal Government remain committed to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty.

  • All Pension paid to Senate President has been returned, says Kwara SSG

All Pension paid to Senate President has been returned, says Kwara SSG

The Secretary to Kwara State Government (SSG), Alhaji Isiaka Gold, on Wednesday said Senate President, Bukola Saraki has returned all monies paid to him as pension back to the coffers of the state government.

The SSG made this known on Wednesday in Ilorin in a press statement issued to clarify the issue of Saraki’s pension being paid by the state government.

According to him, Saraki, who was a two-term governor of the state, has stopped receiving pension from the state since August 2015.

The SSG did not state how much was returned to government coffers, but said a letter dated Aug 20, 2015 by the Senate President also directed that money credited to his account for pension be refunded to the government.

“Dr Saraki requested that the payment of pension to his account be stopped and the amount already credited to the account be refunded to the Government, the State Government promptly complied.

“The Government not only stopped the payment of the said pension, the amount already paid into Dr Saraki’s account since he left office was deducted from the money owed to him as well as his other outstanding lawful entitlements,” Gold added.

According to him, Saraki is entitled to the money he returned as provided in the third schedule, Paragraph D (i) of the Governor and Deputy Governor ((payment of pension) Law, No. 12 of 2010 of Kwara State.

He said that apart from Saraki, other former governors and their deputies were entitled to pension as provided by the law.

“It should be noted that neither the Kwara State Government nor Dr Bukola Saraki violated the state pension law or any other law for that matter.

“The State Pension Law empowers the State Government to pay pension to former Governors of the State,” Gold stressed.

The SSG said the Senate President should be commended for his decision to abandon his legal entitlements.

“It is the hope of the state government that this clarification will end all the controversy about this issue,” he added.

  • How commitment saw me to the top, by Landmark’s best

How commitment saw me to the top, by Landmark’s best

At 21, Olajuwon Ezekiel is a certified member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). The graduate of Accounting and Finance from Landmark University, Omu Aran, Kwara State, also emerged the university’s valedictorian at its 2017 convocation with Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.88. In this interview with ADEGUNLE OLUGBAMILA, Olajuwon, who hails from Osun State, shares his grass to grace story and  how his commitment earned him both local and international reckoning.

    How did the journey begin?

When I was in secondary school, I was about to choose between Commercial subjects and Sciences.  My dad actually preferred sciences because he wanted me to become a medical doctor. But I told him I had interest in a business career. My dad never forced but encouraged me, and today I’m grateful I did not regret that decision.

To what extent does Accounting appeal to you?

Accounting is something I love to do. Another reason is that Accounting is seen as a language in business. I’m thinking of acquiring knowledge in other areas relevant to business such as Business Law.

How did you cope combining school and professional exams?

It’s all about getting one’s priority right! For instance, since my 100-Level I’d engaged in these professional exams. I started from Accounting Technicians Scheme West Africa then to ICAN (Institute of  Chartered Accountants of Nigeria) and then ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).Really,it was demanding; but if you love what you do there is nothing to fear . It’s all about ‘this is what I want to do and I must give my best to it’. Besides in Accounting, one area helps the other. Professional knowledge is like advanced  studies, it makes the academic a bit easier. So, I tried to marry both because there is a kind of positive correlation between the two.

How is your social life like?

First, I don’t have any girlfriend!

Sometimes my friends in school would tease me that I don’t have social life; but I tell them this is not the time for it yet. If I must attend a party, I would rather  do something corporate that will add more value in me. In fact, there was not time to attend social life because I spent most of my time studying for either my school or professional exams, or even taking up academic projects for my colleagues or giving professional guide to those willing to venture into one kind of business or the other.

    Who is your inspiration?

My dad. I also have a mentor Dr Tony Nwanji who has been there for me since my 100-Level. He was our former dean. He inspired me to always aspire for more because he (Nwanji) has more than 13 professional qualifications.  Sometimes our stance on issue also conflict.

    Could you give an instance?

I remember in my 200-Level, Dr Nwanji advised me to suspend my ICAN exam and focus on how to get the best out of my first degree which to him, is like the foundation. But I felt otherwise since I’d done my ATS 1 to 3 and believed I could move on. Thank God I did not agree with the decision at the time.

Could you recall two unforgettable experiences while in school?

When I was writing my final ICAN exam, I had not received enough lectures. This was coupled with our system of studying here which keeps every student very busy. Then I was disturbed thinking of how to cope because I did not want my performance in both to drop and that landed me at the Health Centre. At the centre, my blood pressure was checked morning, afternoon and evening and I was told it had gone up. But I told them you people are just keeping me here because my mind was actually somewhere else. I wasn’t getting enough books to consult and I needed to pass. At the end I passed all the five papers I registered for at the professional level.

The second experience was when we just started school, most of my course mates didn’t reckon with me because of my small stature. But after the first semester exam, everybody was all over me. The lesson I learned from that experience was that when you are committed and be the best in your game, people will look for you and not the other way round.

    What is your future plan?

I’m hoping to get into the ‘Big Four’ accounting firms, (Deloitte LLP, Pricewaterhousecooper, KPMG, and Ernst&Young) or top consulting firms which for me, are a great place to work. I have heard that it is not easy getting into those firms; but if I can do something like this at this age, I am determined to work harder and consolidate on my achievements. I’m planning going into consulting or audit firms and through which I can develop my capacity.

My ultimate dream is having my personal business. All that I’ve acquired so far is theoretical. I need to have that practical experience and that is why I’m targeting those global auditing firms, work with them for a few years before starting mine.

  • No plan to shut down Radio Kwara – KWSG

No plan to shut down Radio Kwara – KWSG

The Kwara State Government has described as completely untrue and an attempt to misinform the public, a story making the rounds on social media platforms about an alleged plan to shutdown Kwara Radio (A.M).

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Communications, Dr Muideen Akorede in a statement on Monday in Ilorin said that this was contrary to the ongoing reform in the state owned media houses.

He said that contrary to the fake news being peddled on social media, the government was actually planning to upgrade Radio Kwara and Midland FM.

Akorede assured that “there is no truth whatsoever in the second leg of the said piece which alleged that the government is planning to sell the land on which the Radio Kwara transmitters are located.’’

“The Ahmed administration has never thought of shutting down Radio Kwara and it has no intention of selling the land on which the station’s transmitters are located,” he said.

Describing as most unfortunate the peddling of such falsehood, Akorede disclosed that Radio Kwara and Midland FM stations were receiving the necessary attention from the state government.

“We are actually in the process of digitising both Radio Kwara and Midland FM with ultra-modern equipment in keeping with modern trends in radio broadcasting all over the world,” he explained.

Akorede assured that plans were afoot to ensure that necessary upgrades and changes were implemented on the equipment of the two media outfits to enhance their effectiveness.

He said that the state-owned television station, KWTV had already received ample attention with the purchase and installation of modern equipment to enhance the quality and reach of its signals, while its contents are also being turned around in readiness for the digital switch-over.

“As you know, we have a repositioning programme in place for the Herald, Kwara Television, and Radio Kwara.

“The driving purpose is to make them function among the best in the country and be able provide to better serve to the people within their coverage areas.

“The Herald is making progress with its positioning as the newspaper of the critical North Central Nigeria with a strong digital footprint.

“We intend to make sure that very soon, it will have effective bureaus for its news and marketing operations in each of the North Central States and some key centres in the South-West,” Akorede said.

  • Osinbajo to North traditional rulers: Speak against divisive voices

Osinbajo to North traditional rulers: Speak against divisive voices

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday urged traditional rulers from the North to rise up to the occasion and speak up against divisive voices in the region.

Some Arewa youths had recently given ultimatum to Igbos to leave the North on or before October 1st, 2017.

They claimed that they were reacting to the sit-at-home order issued by IPOB on 30th of May.

But the Acting President said that the traditional rulers have a great role to play in the matter.

He said: “As Royal Fathers and Traditional Leaders, your place and your role in our society and nation is significant. You are the custodians of our cultures and traditions, and living embodiments of our rich heritage.

“You are, by virtue of your vast knowledge, wisdom and experience, both a vital link with our past, and an important guarantee for the success of our future. This is why your role in national affairs is critical.

“The reason for these series of meetings is well known to all of us: it became necessary in the wake of a spate of divisive statements, in recent months and weeks, pitching the Southeast against the North. We are all aware of the so-called ‘ultimatum’ issued by a group of Northern youths, asking that all Igbos living in the North vacate the region.

“Before then, there was the clamour, and it’s still ongoing, by some south-eastern youths, operating as IPOB and affiliated groups, demanding secession from Nigeria at all costs and by any means.

“In all our previous engagements with Northern and South-Eastern leaders, we all came to the consensus that Nigeria is stronger and better together, and that these hate-filled and divisive rhetoric and agitations are unjustifiable, unacceptable and often times illegal. And I would like to reiterate that today,” he said.

Stressing that Nigeria has already seen enough violence and bloodshed during its history, he said that the price of Nigeria’s unity has already been paid with the blood and lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians lost.

Recalling President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to one Nigeria from his experience in the Military, Osinbajo said that Buhari fought side by side with Nigerians of every tribe and faith.

Osinbajo added “He said we protected each other, put our lives on the line for each other, we were brothers even in the face of death. This is the type of nation we must maintain.

“As Royal Fathers and Leaders, I think you will agree with me that we all have a role to play in countering the voices of divisiveness, and the elements who seek to take us down a bloody path.

“Let us continue to counsel the misguided elements among our youth, who think that ethnic confrontation is a game and that words can be thrown around carelessly without repercussion.” he said

He assured the traditional rulers that the government is not deaf to the legitimate concerns and frustrations in parts of the country.

“Every part of Nigeria has its own grievances. But these have to be expressed graciously and managed with mutuality rather than with scorn and disdain.

“I would like to assure you all that we are here to listen and to answer, and, very importantly, to reassure everyone that we are committed to the unity of Nigeria, and that upon the foundation of that unity we can together build a prosperous and great country.

“We must never take our diversity for granted; the fullness of our strength actually lies in that diversity. And we must wield that diversity, not as divisive tool, but instead as a binding agent.

“As we round up these consultations tomorrow with a meeting with governors, it is clear to me that we are all resolved to by words, conduct and action, promote the unity of our dear nation.” he said

He however said that the government will ensure that the entire apparatus of government is deployed to ensure that no one threatens Nigeria’s territorial integrity and that no one threatens the lives or livelihoods of any Nigerian living anywhere in the country.

The objective of the government, he said, is to provide the environment for a prosperous nation, where all, regardless of ethnicity or religion, can pursue their legitimate aspirations peacefully and securely.

Thanking the traditional rulers for their unyielding cooperation and support, he said: “May the Almighty God continue to give you the wisdom and the strength to preside over your Kingdoms and the good health to reign long and reign well.”

Among those who attended the meeting included the Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III; Emir of Kano, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and HRH Alhaji Dr Yahaya Abubakar Etsu Nupe Niger State.

Others are Alh Ibrahim Sule Gambari,Emir of Ilorin,Kwara State, HRH Alhaji Mustapha Agwai II, Emir of Lafia,Nasarawa State, HRH Alhaji Kyari Umar El-Kanemi, Shehu of Bama representing Shehu of Borno, HRH Jacob Buba Jang,Gbong Gwon Jos.
