  • Kwara APC receives 5,000 pro-Okorocha APGA members

Five thousand members of the former All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Kwara State loyal to Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha have backed the newly registered All Progressives Congress (APC).

A chieftain of the party in the state, Alhaji Bala Lade, addressed reporters yesterday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, with scores of other party members.

Lade, who was the governorship candidate of the APGA in the 2011 election, criticised the state Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) for charging councillorship and local government chairmen candidates discriminatory fees.

He said: “Members of pro-Okorocha (ex-APGA) should be precisely over 5,000. The numerical strength of a group of pro-Okorocha APGA in Kwara State, who have embraced the merger process of APC, include all the Ndigbo who believe in the struggle. The APGA members loyal to Okorocha in the 16 local governments, numerically, should not be less than 5,000.

“We want to reaffirm our decision as a group of pro-Okoroacha APGA in Kwara State to dissolve into the APC, which is the saving grace of the country. We are convinced, having considered all variables as a group, to be part of history in this country that needs salvation. We agree, as such, to be absorbed into the APC, to champion a new cause for Nigeria.

“It is because of our dissatisfaction that we want a new platform to chase the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) away, to give room for trusted people to govern this country. This is the first time we are having a historically merging parties.

“I believe that existing parties have their various ideologies. So, if we decide to come together and work for a common goal, we must be convinced that having buried our individual interests to champion the cause of the country is really the solution for this country. This is our conviction.”

Lade assured that APC would participate in the forthcoming local government election in the state.

He added: “This forthcoming local government in Kwara State is the litmus test for APC in Kwara. I want to assure that by the special grace of Almighty Allah, on October 26, APC shall have a clean slate.

  • No crisis in Kwara United, Abaya insists

No crisis in Kwara United, Abaya insists

Kwara State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Ramat Adesina Abaya has debunked media reports alleging that all is not well in Kwara United FC’s management.

The Commissioner denied the claim that there was a power tussle among various groups in the club in the quest for the control of the Afonja Warriors’ finances.

Abaya told SportingLife that the Board of the club and the Ministry of Youth and Sports which he supervises are working in unison to take Kwara United to the expected heights this season.

He said the Kwara State Government has ensured the prompt payment of the players’ and coaches’ salaries and match bonuses. Two new buses to ease their movement has also been provided, he said.

Abaya also indicated that plans were underway to offset 50 per cent of the players’ signing-on fees for the season and that the players, coaches and the board along with his ministry are on the same page in the interest of the club.

“I am telling you authoritatively that we don’t have any crisis in Kwara United,” Abaya began. “Everything is going on smoothly.”

“The salaries of the players and other staff are being paid when due. The government has already paid all the match bonuses of the players and officials and two buses have just been bought for them. One, a 30-seater for the players and another, an 18-seater for the officials.

“As far as the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Kwara State is concerned, there is no crisis in Kwara United because everything is being done to ensure that the club, which is the baby of the state, is well taken care of to achieve set objectives.

“I also need to add that very soon the 50 per cent of the players’ signing-on fees will be paid. We are not owing them any dime as I speak with you.”

Commenting on the unfavourable media reports, he said: “I don’t know where they got their story from. When they said that we have so many committees trying to hijack the day-to-day running of the club, this is a lie and very far from the truth.

“If they need any information about matters that they are not clear about within my ministry, they can come straight to my office to get accurate information and not be spreading falsehood and misinforming the public.

“It is better you hear from the person concerned. It is unfair to base your judgement on what the outsiders say. The players and officials of Kwara United have not complained to anybody about their welfare or ill treatment.

“It is crystal clear that when players and officials are not having the best of welfare treatment, they are always the first to voice their misgivings. They don’t normally take it easy.”

He continued: “Kwara United is the baby of the state and it is the joy of every indigene of the state to see to it that the club flourishes.

“The club has improved drastically this season as we are currently placed 5th. If it was the old order, are we going to be near this position?

“If we want to move the club forward, definitely we must avoid certain things to streamline things. The issue of crisis does not appear at all.”

“The board is in charge of the club and the members of this board who are only there on a part time basis as their letters of appointment indicate, take instructions from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“This is because Kwara United is a parastatal under the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” Abaya concluded.

Kwara United are 6th on the Glo Nigeria Proffessional Football League log with 35 points from 23 games.

  • NSCDC parades kidnap suspect in Kwara

Men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) yesterday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, paraded a man, Bashiru Ishola, for allegedly kidnapping three girls.

The suspect, a drummer with a local music band, was said to have committed the crime last Friday at Oke-Kere community in Ilorin.

It was learnt that the kidnap victims are two girls from same parents, including another six-year-old girl.

The state Commandant of the Civil Defence, Yerima Gana, who paradedthe suspect, said the children were abducted at Sheikh Kamaldeem Street, Oke Kere, Ilorin.

The children, he said, took part in a free meal for breaking the ongoing Ramadan fast by a Muslim cleric in the area.

Gana said the suspect allegedly enticed the kids with soya bean cake, popularly called Beske, and a loaf of bread, before he took them to Flower Garden, about 20 kilometres from where the kids were having their meal.

The NSCDC commandant said some charms, wrapped with black and white thread were found on the suspect when he was arrested.

  • Fed Govt to build 550 housing units

The Federal Government will build 550 housing units in the 22 states of the federation ravaged by flood in 2012, the Kwara state Chair, Committee on Flood, Relief and Rehabilitation, Alhaji Dabarako Mohammed has disclosed.

He added that each of the 22 states would enjoy 25 housing units from the Federal Government. Dabarako, who is the state head of service told reporters in Ilorin, the state capital, that the state had put measures in place to mitigate flooding in 2013. He listed some of the states that will benefit from the Federal Government housing project as Kwara Kogi, Delta, Bayelsa, Niger and other states where the impact of the 2012 flooding was devastating.

He stated that the state government had appealed to hydro-stations to regulate the release of water from the dams to avoid flooding. He opined that the water could be released gradually when the dam was not filled up.

He said that: “We also spoke with hyo-stations that is Jebba, New Bussa and Shiroro. We advised them that what they could do to help our people is to regulate the way they will release their water. They should not wait until the dams are 100 percent full. So that people down streams will be able to manage their own situation.

“We also went to the traditional rulers and chairmen of the councils to identify ten relocations areas in their respective councils for the people. Having done that we held meeting with the Presidential committee on flood last week; they told us that the federal government is coming to assist the people. It was at the meeting that we learnt that 25 housing units would be constructed in each of the 22 affected states.

He stated that committee had identified such areas as Patigi, Moro, Kaiama, Baruteen and Ilorin as some flood prone areas.”

He added that the state had designated 60 sites where to relocate the people of the state living in flood prone areas.

The 60 sites are scattered across six local government areas of the state that were affected by last year’s devastating flood.

The local government areas are Patigi, Edu, Kaiama, Baruten, Moro and Ilorin, the state capital, saying that each council has been allocated 10 relocation centres.

The Special Assistant, Emergency and Relief Services to the state Governor, Musa Abdullahi said the government had cleared virgin land, arranged for tents and mobile toilets and provided about N5m anti-flood epidemic drugs as a proactive measure against the impending flood and the associated health demands.

He added that the state governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed had made provision of N10m for the construction of the tents and N7m for the mobile toilets.

He urged people living in flood prone areas to relocate to safe areas and be more safety conscious.

  • Kwara to upgrade 120 schools

The Kwara State government has said it would upgrade 120 secondary schools to meet global standards of teaching, infrastructure and pupil-teacher ratio in the state.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Communications, Dr Muideen Akorede, in Ilorin.

The statement said the move was designed to enhance the quality of education and teaching standards in schools in line with the education reform programme tagged “every child counts’’.

“Secondary education builds on the strong foundation laid at the basic level, so we have to get it right by providing high standard education in an atmosphere conducive to quality learning for our children before they begin tertiary education.

“That is why we are matching our teacher training with a curriculum overhaul and comprehensive upgrading of our secondary schools,’’ it said.

The statement said in an attempt to ensure geographical spread and equitable distribution of development projects, 40 secondary schools had been selected for overhaul from each of the three senatorial zones in the state.

The proposed upgrade will cover classrooms rehabilitation and construction; provision of science equipment; computer laboratories and sports facilities in all schools selected for the first phase of the project.

It said that another set of schools would be upgraded once work on the 120 was completed.

The statement stressed that the proposed overhaul of the schools would improve on the 400 blocks of classrooms rehabilitated by the state government in the last two years.

  • Offa monarch: Victorious house urges Kwara to execute court verdict

Bolstered by the recent court judgment, the victorious Olugbense ruling house – one of the ruling houses in Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State – yesterday urged the government to instal its son, Prince AbdulRauf Adegboyega Keji, as the Olofa of Offa.

An Appeal Court, sitting in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, last week voided the over three years’ rule of Oba Mufutau Mohammadu Gbadamosi, of Anilelerin ruling house, as the Olofa. The sacked monarch has challenged the Appellate Court’s ruling at the apex court.

Addressing reporters in Ilorin, the spokesperson of the Olugbense ruling house, Prince Saka Keji said the Offa stool is vacant.

Keji explained that the enforcement of the Appeal Court judgment by the state government would ensure “peace, justice, fairness, equity and adherence to the principles of the rule of law, which forms the bedrock of democracy”.

He added: “There is no Olofa in Offa until the state government does the needful to enforce the court judgment. This is necessary to ensure that peace continues to reign supreme in Offa.

“We appeal to all Offa sons and daughters at home and in the Diaspora to remain calm, law-abiding and go about their lawful businesses.”

The prince stressed that “the landmark judgment, which ruled that it was the turn of Olugbense ruling house to fill the vacant stool of Olofa of Offa on the demise of Oba Olawore Olanipekun of the Anilelerin ruling house in 2010, has put the Olofa chieftaincy status in proper historical perspective”.

Keji said: “It is astonishing, disgusting and naïve that some uninformed people, out of mischief, have been even suggested that the Olugbense ruling house should allow a sleeping dog to lie and allow perfidy to continue.”

  • Mohammed gets rousing welcome in Kwara

    •Ramadan lecture tomorrow

Members and supporters of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Kwara State yesterday thronged the Ilorin International Airport to give the party’s national spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, a rousing home coming.

Mohammed, who is the Publicity Secretary of the newly formed All Progressives Party (APC), arrived at the airport at 8am. Party supporters were at the airport as early as 6am.

An ACN member in the House of Assembly, Temitope Olayonu, led party supporters who welcomed the ACN chief. Others included a former member of the Assembly, Ayo Idowu; former Acting Chairman of the party, Mr. Kayode Olawepo and Prince Shuaibu Olarewaju, a member of the newly constituted executive of the party, among other progressives.

Mohammed was in company of his wife, Alhaja Kudirat. He was surprised at the show of love and camaraderie by the party faithful.

The crowd sang various songs of solidarity on seeing Mohammed.

The convoy moved from the airport to his home country in Oro, where he addressed the crowd. Traffic was crawling in Ilorin during the journey through the capital town.

The ACN spokesman explained developments within the APC and its centrality to the development of Kwara State, the party’s preparation for the forthcoming local government election and the visit of Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola to Kwara tomorrow as the special guest of honour at this year’s Lai Mohammed Annual Ramadan Lecture.

An ACN chieftain, Alhaji Hassan Daudu, hailed the party’s leader in the state for his steadfastness and political sagacity that have pushed the opposition thus far.

He prayed God to guide Mohammed.

Mohammed will tomorrow host Aregbesola and other dignitaries from the Southwest at his annual Ramadan programme in Oro.

  • 30,000 enterprises benefit from credit facilities in Kwara

Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara said more than 30,000 micro as well as small and medium scale enterprises had benefited from its N250 million revolving credit scheme.

The governor said this in Ilorin at the inauguration of the Kwara State Artisan Congress (KSAC), an umbrella body for all artisans in the state.

Ahmed said another N100 million would be disbursed in the next few weeks with members of the artisan congress forming the bulk of beneficiaries.

“The forthcoming N100 million intervention is part of our continuous efforts to boost the informal sector through entrepreneurship promotion, capacity building through training and the provision of affordable credit,’’ he said.

The governor, who described artisans as major players in the economic development of the state, urged them to take advantage of the numerous business opportunities created by his administration.

Ahmed noted that as a labour-friendly government, his administration was one of the first in the country to implement the national minimum wage.

He also said that workers salaries, promotion and other incentives such as training had been regular.

Earlier, the President of the association, Alhaji Abdullahi Lanky, had commended the state government for promoting the well-being of artisans.

He described the formation of the association as a challenge for members to strive for excellence.

  • Kwara’s transformation testimony

    Kwara’s transformation testimony

Indeed, if His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Abdulfatah, Governor of Kwara State were to be an athlete, he would be in a blistering form in the 100 metres dash, just as the 4X400 metres relay race would comfortably occupy pole position in his competitive athletic menu list. Interestingly, both require enormous speed and endurance, but more than anything else, focus.  No doubt, in the last one year, this gentleman has displayed these traits in surplus; the reason he has so far surpassed expectations before and after his victory in the April 26, 2011 gubernatorial election in the state on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Recall that when politicians and technocrats from Kwara State and beyond converged in Lagos for a retreat to draw a roadmap on the Kwara Project after the elections,  many dismissed it as a jamboree; describing it as one of those time-wasting talk shops that would not impact positively on the people.  In fact, as was with the governor’s “Legacy Continues” slogan premised on the benefits of one administration furrowing into another in terms of policy formulation and implementation, as well as programme actualization, many saw it as another political mantra to cajole the electorate. The doubts arose particularly as most new governments in Nigeria were in the habit of steering away from the programmes of the out-going government and often rubbished their actions and programmes by any way possible.

However, as opposed to this common practice, the Ahmed’s administration chanted the continuity mantra and stuck to it being in the know of its benefits to the people. Little wonder, two years down the foray, for the discerning, the administration has substantially acquitted itself by upping the ante of development in many sectors of the Kwara economy with the monumental developmental benchmark set by the immediate past administration of Dr Bukola Saraki as a guide. Starting out with the Lagos Summit which gave birth to the shared prosperity of the administration as a spring board for the formulation, implementation and actualization of the administration’s programmes and policies, all eyes were fastened on the transformation agenda of the government.

With a policy thrust that leverages resources and takes advantage of the strength of the state for economic growth, human capital development and youth empowerment, strategic infrastructure and effective governance, all of which fuse with the Shared Prosperity Programme of the administration, happy days, indeed, have come.

While deepening and strengthening commercial agriculture through private sector initiative to drive the economy of the state and in turn, create jobs and ensure food security, the government has completed the International Diagnostic Centre, flagged-off of the inaugural flight by student-pilots of the aviation college, completed the Micheal Imoudu/ Offa garage road among other road projects started by the immediate past government, as part of the continuity agenda. The administration’s high value on the 500 metres concept, especially as it affects its health and water supply policies spurred it on to consolidate on the achievements of the previous administration in the area of healthcare.

In its first phase, the administration embarked on a robust rehabilitation of the five General Hospitals across the three senatorial districts of the state at the cost of N1.6 billion with more General Hospitals to follow in the second phase. The governor explained that the logic behind the concept is that no Kwaran should go beyond 500 metres to access quality healthcare.  Already, plans are in top gear for the start of the Community-based Healthcare Insurance Scheme, which has already undergone pilot shape.

With matchless vigour, Dr Ahmed pursues his dreams of human capital development and youth empowerment. Like squeezing water out of stone, quite a number of investors are now keen on coming to the state.  There is a N70 billion agreement on large-scale farming with Valsolar, a Spanish Consortium. The agreement has since been commended by stakeholders in the agriculture sector, just as the federal government through the Minister of Agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the state government on the production and cultivation of cassava on commercial scale in the state.

Today, Kwara State produces about 40 tonnes per hectare, which is far above national average. The beauty of the Valsolar/Kwara State government partnership lies in the fact that the Spanish consortium got to know about Kwara State’s potentials in agriculture through the Spanish Embassy in Nigeria. Another dividend of the administration’s policy on agriculture was the interest of Mosilo Group in building an Agro-Processing complex in Share in Ifelodun council area of the state. The 600 tonnes complex with over $150 million capital outlay for its first phase will change the status of Nigeria to the largest producer of cassava in the world.

Instructively, the efforts of the governor has not gone unnoticed as he was awarded the Outstanding Agriculture Icon of the Year 2011, for his contributions to the country’s agricultural development by the African Leadership Magazine in Washington DC, United States of America in April last year.

To boost water supply, the administration provided water booster station at Western Reservoir in Ilorin and Anberi to boost water supply to Ajasse-Ipo and environs. It also carried out comprehensive rehabilitation of 15 water works and sunk 300 boreholes across the State.

On the area of manpower, which the government sees as critical to the actualization of its robust policies, it has expedited action on the take-off of the School of Nursing, Oke-Ode to complement the College of Nursing, Ilorin, in the training of qualified nurses and midwives.

On the area of water supply, the reticulation of water pipes in Ilorin metropolis has continued in high pace while boreholes have been dug for many communities to ensure availability and access to pipe borne water. In the last count, no fewer than 14 water works were rehabilitated while 38 others were committed to the National Grid.

It is worthy of note that in the last nine years or so, Kwara State has been reputed for road construction. The tempo has been nourished under the present administration. The Ahmed administration has done over 800 kilometres of roads in the three senatorial districts to open the state further for agricultural development and economic growth. Over 300 of these are feeder and access roads purposed to create the desired value chain. In the Kulende-Oyun bridge axis of Old-Jebba road in Ilorin, a federal road that was a nightmare for motorists due to monumental traffic snarl, today, the story is different. The state government carried out expansion work on a long stretch of the road at a cost of N200million and traffic congestion on the road has since disappeared.

Again, the government has rehabilitated more than 400 classrooms in 58 schools while about N24 million was spent on the payment of National Examination Council (NECO) and National Board for Technical Education (NABTEB) fees for 3,126 students.

At the tertiary education level, fees of Kwara indigenes at the Kwara State University Malete was reduced from N180,000.00 to N95,000.00 to the relief of parents and guardians. The government also offered Bursary Award to students of Kwara State origin.

The subventions of state-owned tertiary institutions were increased by 50% to boost the financial strength of the institutions. Still poised to reflect the new education policy based on capacity building with a technical education bias, technical schools in Erin-Ile, Ilorin and Patigi are being rehabilitated and equipped to produce well trained manpower, while an International Vocational Centre at Ajasse-Ipo, in Irepodun local government of the state is under construction.

On the economic front, Kwara State remains a beautiful bride for investors and banking institutions who want to partake in the actualization of the state’s potentials.

  • Kwara Utd sign, axe 4 players

Kwara Utd sign, axe 4 players

Kwara United have snapped up four experienced players to help push their case for a continental outing next season, a top official has revealed.

The four players are Auwalu Aminu from Gombe United; John Lawrence from Kaduna United; John Lawrence and Wasiu Ibrahim from Lobi Stars and ABS respectively.

Explaining the reason behind the new acquisition, the head coach of Kwara United, Samson Unuanel informed SportingLife that the four players were brought in to shore up the club’s resolve not to leave any stone unturned in their quest for the league title and other aspirations this season.

The former Super Falcons and Ocean Boys gaffer extolled the virtues and qualities of his recruits: “Auwalu and John Uche are good defenders we spotted during our games with Gombe United and Kaduna United. They are players that could fit into our game plan. We are in a time when we play league games twice in a week and putting that task on the same players may tell on them later. That was why we agreed to bring in Auwalu and John Uche so that we can have able replacements for the duration of the season and henceforth,” Unuanel said.

The coach also revealed that four players had also been informed their services were no longer needed to balance the books.

Kwara United are second on the log with 32 points from 19 games after the question mark surrounding the Akwa United versus Warri Wolves’ cracker.
