  • Kwara closes poly as students prevent Ahmed from inaugurating projects

The Kwara State Government yesterday closed down the state polytechnic, Ilorin, following the prevention of Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed from inaugurating some projects to mark his second anniversary in office.

The government had slated the inauguration of some roads and other projects for yesterday and today. One of the projects billed for inauguration yesterday is the Akerebiata-Royal Valley Estate Road within Ilorin township.

An eyewitness said the students chased away scores of people who had gathered for the inauguration.

It was learnt that the angry students vandalised some vehicles belonging to the government near Mubo Street.

The protestors were joined by their colleague from the state College of Education, Ilorin, as well as other tertiary institutions.

They were said to be protesting the alleged shooting of a National Diploma (ND 1) student of the polytechnic on Monday by a policeman in a bullion van.

The protest lasted over five hours. It paralysed vehicular movement and forced scores of commuters to trek long distances.

The government said the school will remain closed until the return of normalcy to the school.

In a statement the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Isiaka Gold, the government advised the students to return to their homes until the reopening of the school.

The government described as unfortunate the shooting of the student by a policeman. It also advised the students to maintain the peace and disallow miscreants from hijacking their peaceful protests.

But the National Vice President, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Taiwo Otitolaye, described “the incident as one of the manifestation of a failed state”.

He said: “Across all geo-political zones, there is insecurity of life and property, kidnapping, bank robbery, Boko Haram insurgence, looting of pension funds, political brigandage, even by the Governors’ Forum. This regime has lost focus and there is a state of anomie in the land.

“We condemn the primitive shooting of the student and call for the immediate arrest and trial of the policeman who carried out this wicked act.”

  • Kwara Poly students protest police ‘shooting’ of colleague

Students of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, yesterday barricaded the ever-busy Muritala Mohammed Way, protesting alleged police shooting of their colleague.

The protesters made bonfires on the highway, thereby obstructing vehicular movement.

A police escort attached to a bullion van owned by a bank was said to have fired a shot at a taxi cab which hit the student in the leg.

The incident reportedly occurred at 2.10pm.

As the news of the shooting broke into the polytechnic’s campus, the students were said to have trooped out.

The protest lasted about one and a half hours.

The students threw the popular Muritala Mohammed Way, Post Office area and adjoining streets into pandemonium.

Addressing reporters on the incident, a student, who gave his name as Abodunrin John, said: “The student was alighting from a taxi cab when the policeman in the bullion van, belonging to one of the foremost banks, aimed at the tyre of the cab.

“Unfortunately for the student, Ahmed Dayo, a National Diploma (ND1) student in the Department of Accounting, instead of the bullet to destroy the tyre, it went straight to hit him and destroyed his leg beyond repair.”

It was learnt that the driver of the bullion van sped away, apparently to escape the angry students.

  • Cancer screening centres for Kwara

    Cancer screening centres for Kwara

Founder of the Life Empowerment Anchors Hope (LEAH) Charity Foundation and wife of Kwara State governor Mrs Omolewa Ahmed is collaborating with some organisations to establish cervical cancer screening centres in three hospitals.

The exercise is part of the activities to commemorate the second anniversary of Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed. The centres are in Sobi Specialist Hospital, Adewole Cottage Hospital and Children Specialist Hospital.

Patients will pay only N200 for treatment.

Members of the foundation have begun an aggressive sensitisation and awareness campaign.

According to the Special Assistant to Mrs Ahmed on Administration and Strategy, Lanre Bello, the provision of health education and affordable cancer screening facilities for Kwarans was uppermost to the foundation.

“It has become obvious to us that we lose a lot of our women to the lack of appropriate education on the ways to avoid the deadly ailment and that lack of access to screening facilities deny them the opportunity for life-saving interventions which science provides. This is a tide we are determined to stop.

“We agree that death is the inevitable end of every mortal, but we are determined to stop every avoidable death and improve life expectancy in our state. This then appears to be an appropriate time for me to solicit for the assistance of Kwarans who have enjoyed the blessings of God to kindly join us in the effort to provide cancer screening facilities, especially mammogram machines. Let us join hands to prevent every avoidable mortality this silent killer imposes on our women,” he stated.

Stating some of the achievements of the foundation in the last two years, Bello said the programme had updated and equipped a maternity unit of the Alapa Cottage Hospital in Asa Local Government Area.

The LEAH Charity foundation has also created the ‘Clinic on Wheels which takes health care delivery to individual communities across the state in ambulances manned by qualified personnel.

“The programme, which takes free medical care in the form of examination, analysis, treatment and referrals to rural/semi-urban communities is a collaboration between the office of the governor’s wife, the foundation and several organisations.

“Under this programme, LEAH Charity foundation has reached out to over 30,000 people in Asa, Kaiama, Baruten, Oyun, Ilorin, Irepodun and others. Free malaria treatment, free eye glasses and sundry tests were carried out on each mission,” he added

  • Kwara Utd are better away than at home, says coach

Coach Samson Unuanel, the Technical Adviser, Kwara United FC of Ilorin, on Thursday blamed the impatience of home fans for some of the club’s poor home results.

Unuanel told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin, against the backdrop of a 1-0 away victory against Lobi Stars of Makurdi, in a mid-week Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match in

    Katsina-Ala.

He explained that his players often played under pressure on their home ground, accusing the fans of always wanting them to win all the time, thereby putting the players under pressure.

“Although we understand this is because of their love for the team, but they also need to exercise patience sometimes too. We have told them and I believe that with more sensitisation, the fans will learn to appreciate our position too,” Unuanel said.

The former Ocean Boys coach explained that the victory in Makurdi was a way of compensating the fans for the shared points in Ilorin against visiting Dolphins of Port-Harcourt in the week 13game.

He described the triumph as, “least expected and a victory in a lion’s den,” and called on stakeholders to prevail on the home fans to improve the atmosphere at home for the club.

The coach promised to make the state proud at the end of the league season. Kwara United are currently occupying the 4th position on the NPFL table, with 22 points from 14 matches.

  • Family sues Kwara, Saraki over land acquisition

Family sues Kwara, Saraki over land acquisition

The Gambari family of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, has sued the state government on the location of Shoprite shopping mall.

The family, headed by the Serikin Gambari, Alhaji Yahaya Ahmed Serikin, is claiming that the 3.024 hectares of land, where the South African-based supermarket is sited, was initially acquired for public purpose but converted to commercial use by the government.

In a writ of summons, the counsel to the family Bayo Alase said: “The present location or site of the Kwara State Staff Development Centre and Shoprite shopping mall at Fate Road in the state capital was acquired from the claimants by the state government for ‘public purpose’ and which land was being used as the premises of the college/centre.”

Joined in the suit are the Attorney-General, the director general, Bureau of Lands, Senator Bukola Saraki and Kwara State Mall Development Company Limited.

Jawondo accused the defendants of illegal alienation and transference of the land to Shoprite, a commercial venture.

The plaintiff’s counsel is seeking “an order of the court setting aside or directing the immediate cancellation of the excision, alienation and transfer by the state government to the management of the mall of the parcel of land of 3.024 hectares, being part of the claimants’ family land originally acquired for ‘public purpose.’

“An order of the court setting aside or directing the immediate cancellation of the certificate of occupancy Number KW16737 and an order of the court directing the defendants, their agents, servants and or privies and or any person(s) and others …to return and hand over forthwith to the claimants’ family the possession and occupation of the land…”

The government declined to comment on a matter yestrday because it is already in court.

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed, Dr Muideen Akorede said: “As the matter has reportedly been filed in court, the state government will reserve comment on the issue.

“However, in the interest of our partners, let me state here that the transaction on Kwara Mall was transparently consummated between the state government and private investors, under a public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement.”

  • Kwara ACN, PDP quarrel over alleged defection

•Opposion: stop your dance of shame
•ACN downplaying our achievement, says govt

The Kwara State Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday disagreed over the report by the ruling party that 2,500 members of the opposition had defected to the state PDP.

ACN chieftain, Mohammed Dele Belgore (SAN), described as a show of shame and admission of failure the PDP’s and its government’s claims that the ACN members defected because “Belgore failed to give them employment”.

Belgore, who has denied the defection story, asked whether it was the duty of the opposition to provide jobs for the people, or the government which controls the machinery of the state and is charged with welfare of the citizens. The government and the ruling PDP have repeatedly taunted the opposition on the defection, which the ACN insisted was another lie from the PDP and its government.

Belgore, in a statement by his media aide, Rafiu Ajakaye, said: “Our initial reaction is that nothing, however shameful and debasing, is beyond a government now notorious for its lies and chicanery and whose every claim now faces integrity test even from little kids.”

But Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed urged the state ACN to come up with viable alternatives to its policies instead of downplaying his administration’s achievements.

In a statement in Ilorin, the state capital, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Communications Dr Muideen Akorede said: “For once, Belgore should suspend politicking and acknowledge the Ahmed administration’s triumphs, which are obvious to all but the embattled opposition.

“These achievements include rural/urban road construction and rehabilitation, supply of laboratory equipment to schools, rehabilitation of basic and senior secondary school classrooms, rural and urban electrification, the remodelling of five general hospitals, provision of 220 boreholes and rehabilitation work on 13 waterworks, the on-going construction of a first-class International Vocational Centre and Engineering Complex at KWASU among others.

“These strides are obvious to all but the ACN is daily haemorrhaging disillusioned members, who are then trooping en masse to the high-performing PDP.”

Belgore said the celebrations of the alleged defection raised questions about the seriousness, competence and the thought of the initiators of such self-defeating claims.

The statement reads: “We have been watching with amusement how the Kwara State Government, which claims to be performing and is popular, is wasting public funds in celebrating in the newspapers and on television the sponsored and contrived defection of some fictitious members of the opposition party.

“They even went to the ridiculous extent of sponsoring a statement that Belgore (SAN) promised the defectors employment but has reneged on that promise and that was the reason for their defection…

“Indeed, the celebration of the so-called defection is a pitiable show by the PDP-led government and it raises a number of questions. If the so-called defectors’ grouse is that they remain unemployed, contrary to a promise that had been made to them, how and from where do such unemployed people get funds to sponsor the so-called defection ceremony and the various television and newspaper coverage it has received?

“Does this not suggest that they were sponsored? Certainly, the sponsorship would not have come from the party that they were defecting from. Whose responsibility is it – government or the opposition – to create jobs? Is it not only a shameless government that would be celebrating its own failure by saying someone else should have done what it is constitutionally charged to do?

“If the opposition does not exist in Kwara, as the government has repeatedly stated over the years, where did the so-called defectors, numbering 2,500 from one single local council, come from?

“Assuming even that there was in fact a real decampment, now that unemployment has been cited as the reason for it, what is the government doing to address that?

“Is the government going to create or offer jobs to the alleged 2,500 unemployed defectors or improve their lot in any meaningful and sustainable way beyond the hand-outs it has given to them to create the false media show of the decampment?

“The truth of the matter is that the PDP-led government in Kwara State has failed miserably and it continues to exhibit its failure and incompetence in embarrassing ways and this is one of such ways. Beyond the usual window-dressings and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signings with bogus entities like the so-called Vasolar Consortium about which nothing verifiable exists other than media publications from the MOU signing ceremony with KWSG, it has no meaningful achievement on record to date.

“Rather, it is fond of making false claims on its performance, from blatantly lying that it has constructed over 600 kilometres of road in the state, the embarrassing falsehood/contradictory statements on the so-called Shonga award, to claims that it has employed thousands of youths and is sharing prosperity even when youth restiveness, armed robbery, rampant killings have hit a record high in the state while poverty now walks on all four in the state so much that people are queuing in front of the Government House to beg for foods and shelter!

“Meanwhile, there are numerous allegations of financial scandals by the past and current PDP-led government being (or are yet to be) investigated; the list continues to grow by the day. The government should keep itself busy in improving the lives of the people and in running an open and clean government. It should stop chasing shadows and wasting public funds by bringing itself into further ridicule and odium by self-defeating and embarrassing media displays.”

  • National Council on Sports meeting holds in Kwara State

AS A follow-up to one of the outcomes of the Presidential Retreat on Sports, the National Council on Sports meeting has commenced in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The meeting which involves the National Sports Commission, the 36 States and the FCT, Military and Para-military sports representatives and other critical stakeholders will discuss amongst others: Key performance Indicators of Sports(KPIs); Constitution of National Academicals Sports Committee (NASCOM); Introduction of National Youth Games and the National Open Sports Festival; Elections into non-concessioned National Sports Federations’ Board and Situation Report and Efforts of NSC towards the concession of the National Stadia.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Acting Director-General of the NSC, Alhaji Mustapha Mohammed noted that the plenary of the Council which is the Technical Session is expected to “prepare and discuss all memos and issues related to the business of sports in Nigeria for the Council”.

He further said that the meeting will also harmonise all the memos and make appropriate recommendations to Council.

In her opening remarks, Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Kwara State, Ramat Adeshina Abaya stated that though sports has remained a strong tool that binds and unifies together the entire citizenry irrespective of our cultural, political, religious and social status, it has however like other sectors of the national economy been confronted with enormous challenges which “if left unresolved will continue to reflect in the nation’s unimpressive performances”.

She therefore charged participants to evolve strategies that will navigate a new path of success for sports development in Nigeria.

Acknowledging the efforts of past contributors to sports development whose actions had been of immense benefit to the growth of sports in the country, she decried the situation where Nigerian Youths consider sporting activities as being only for school drop outs instead of an avenue for building a career, purse and fame.

Earlier, in his address of welcome, Director, Sports Planning Research and Documentation (SPR&D) Gregory Iyogun expressed appreciation to the government and people of Kwara State for hosting this edition of the National Council on Sport.

He emphasized the relevance of the National Council on Sports, noting that “as a gathering of key players and professionals that you will do justice to the issues that would be discussed and invariably chart a successful pathway to move sports forward in our great country”.

The meeting is scheduled to hold from 21st – 26th April, 2013 at the Banquet Hall of the Kwara State Government House.

  • Enyimba lament draw with Kwara United

Enyimba lament draw with Kwara United

Enyimba FC have opened a book of lamentation after they struggled to a goalless draw with Kwara United in a week seven match of the Nigeria Professional Football League last Sunday.

Enyimba’s lack of cutting edge was once again laid bare in the NPFL Matchday 7 fixture as they again could not score despite dominating the game from start to finish.

Goalkeeper Paul Godwin described the result as difficult to accept.

“This is very difficult for me, very difficult for my team mates. We deserved to win this game, we really did and I am yet to come to terms with this goalless draw,” Paul said on EnyimbaFC.net

“After our draw with Warri Wolves, this is the last thing we wanted so I’m very upset by it. We knew we needed to win and right from the start we played very well, but unfortunately none of the chances we created was converted.

“I just want to assure our fans not to lose all hope because we as a team, despite this setback, are still ready to fight for a good finish. These two draws will make it hard for us but we will be willing to give everything we have in our next matches to make up for this very disappointing scoreline.”

The People’s Elephants are placed 9th on the log with nine points from seven games, and will travel to take on Gombe United in a week eight fixture.
