Court orders INEC to accept Labour Party’s candidates for FCT council polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been ordered to grant the Labour Party (LP) access code to enable it to upload the names and particulars of its nominated candidates for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council election scheduled to hold in February 2026

INEC is also ordered to upload the names and particulars of the LP’s nominated candidates for the FCT area council election and publish the same at the respective six area councils for public scrutiny within 48 hours, pending the hearing of an existing motion on notice filed by the LP.

Justice J. O. E. Adeyemi-Ajayi issued the orders on December 16 while ruling on an ex parte motion for interim injunctions filed by the LP and moved by its lawyer, Christian Elom.

In a supporting affidavit, the LP stated that it chose to approach the court after INEC allegedly failed to publish the names of its candidates for the February 2026 council elections as required, despite being duly notified.

A certified true copy (CTC) of the enrolled orders as contained in the ruling on the motion ex parte, marked M/16037/2025, was seen on Thursday.

    The orders read:

*An interim injunction is hereby granted, directing the defendant (INEC) to grant access code to the claimant/applicant (LP) to upload the names and particulars of its nominated candidates for the FCT area council election scheduled to hold in February 2026 by the defendant within 48 hours pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

*An interim injunction is hereby granted directing the defendant to upload the names and particulars of the claimant/applicant’s nominated candidates for the FCT area council election and publish the same at the respective six area councils for public scrutiny within 48 hours pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

*This interim injunction is hereby made this day upon application ex-parte which shall abate seven days from today unless extended before the abatement of the order.

Justice Adeyemi-Ajayi proceeded to grant an accelerated hearing in the case and adjourned till January 27 next year for the hearing of the motion on notice.

The LP stated, in its support affidavit, that it gave the notice of its primary elections to the defendant (INEC) within the time frame provided by the law

The party added that after its primary elections, and within the 180 days provided by the law, it submitted the list of the candidates who emerged from the primaries it conducted and whom it proposes to support at the election, to INEC, in the prescribed forms.

The LP argued that INEC is duty-bound to, within seven days of receipt of the particulars of the candidates, publish the same in the constituency in which the candidates intend to contest the election.

The party added that the law mandates the defendant (INEC) to, at least 150 days before the day of the election, publish, by displaying at the relevant office or offices of the defendant, and on the defendant’s website, a statement of the full names and addresses of the candidates standing nominated by the claimant.

The LP accused INEC of allegedly failing to perform these statutory responsibilities.

Labour Party NEC ratifies Nnewi convention, sets stage for nationwide congresses

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party has ratified the party’s Nnewi, Anambra State convention, paving the way for ward, local government, and state congresses across the country.

Friday’s NEC meeting, held at the party’s Abuja secretariat, was presided over by National Chairman Julius Abure.

It was attended by members of the National and State Working Committees from all 36 states and the FCT, as well as key stakeholders, including the party’s 2023 Vice-Presidential candidate, Dr. Yusuf Baba Datti-Ahmed, and a delegation from the Independent National Electoral Commission led by Rakiya Dattijo of its Election and Party Monitoring Department.

The meeting reviewed the state of the party and deliberated on its strategic direction.

In a communiqué signed by Abure and National Secretary Umar Ibrahim, NEC affirmed the validity of the 2024 Nnewi National Convention, stating it aligned with the Supreme Court’s decision empowering the party to determine its leadership as part of its internal affairs.

The communique read in part, “The NEC in session notes and recalls vividly the following Supreme Court pronouncements:

“The reason for the non-justiciability of internal disputes of a political party is simple, and that is that in the eyes of the law, a political party is a corporate entity with its constitution, rules, regulations, and guidelines which are binding on members who have joined freely have consented to be so bound (See Abegunde Vs. Ondo State House of Assembly & Ors. (2025) LPELR-24588 (SC).)

“Political Parties have put in place diverse kinds of internal dispute resolution mechanisms to handle any matter arising from disputes among members.

“Political parties and their members should therefore have faith in the internal dispute resolution mechanisms prescribed in their party constitution.

“Having subscribed to the membership of a Political party, a member of a Political party has by his membership agreed to be bound by the constitution and the decision of the party contained in its guidelines.

“So the Politician must comply with the provisions of the party constitution on how disputes over the internal affairs of the party can be resolved in keeping with the legal doctrine that the internal affairs of a Political party are non-justiceable and therefore not subject to the judicial powers of the courts..

“Consequent upon the above, NEC in session reaffirmed those elected as National officers of the Party at the National Convention held in 2024 in Anambra State on the 27th of March 2024.”

Those elected were the current 17 member National Working Committee which has Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Farouk as National Secretary, Chief Clement Ojukwu, Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi and Dr Esther Gulmu (Deputy National Chairmen) and Obiora Ifoh as National Publicity Secretary among others.

The party’s NEC also mandated the National Chairman and Secretary to convene a Special Convention “if necessary.”

The party also filled vacant positions in the NEC including the appointment of Oluwafemi Abayomi Arabambi as the National Vice Chairman South West,

Prince Favour Reuben as the Assistant National Organising Secretary and Barr. Enu Kikanwa as Assistant National Woman Leader South South.

The communique added, “NEC in session ratified the decision to hold Ward, Local Government, and State Congresses across the Federation.”

Abia lawmaker dumps APC for Labour Party

The lawmaker representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Labour Party (LP).

Speaking in Umuahia, the state capital, Akaliro said his decision was personal and driven by his conviction that Governor Alex Otti has, in the past two years, demonstrated leadership and commitment in delivering democratic dividends to the people of Abia State.

According to him, the governor’s leadership style has made it difficult for him to play the role of an opposition lawmaker, hence his decision to join forces with the administration to further support governance in the state.

“Today, I have seen the light,” Akaliro said. “I have watched His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, closely to understand where he is coming from and where he is headed. Based on what he has done so far for the good of our state, I have decided to join him in the Labour Party (LP).”

He pledged to work with the governor in ensuring that more democratic dividends reach the residents and citizens of Abia State.

“Abia is number one in virtually everything, cutting across the nooks and crannies of the state. I am proud to say that, truly, I am an Abian.

“Judging from his (Otti’s) antecedents and what he has done, I thought that he was a banker, but I never knew that he was a seasoned administrator; he came prepared for the job, and today, I am really happy, and my constituents are excited that I have decided to join the moving train. I know that he is taking us to the proper destination, and Abia has always rejoiced. Abia will be happy with him and will continue to be happy with him.

“The governor has done well in the education sector. He has also done well in infrastructure, roads, houses, smart schools, name it, cutting across the length and breadth of Abia State; even the blind can see that this man came prepared for the work, and he is doing it seamlessly.

“As a former opposition member, Dr. Alex Otti made my job very difficult, because I have nothing to criticize him with. Even when the thought comes up for me to criticize him, the next moment, he (Otti) is doing it, so, makes it difficult for me to criticize him. I have no other choice but to join him because I know that he is the right man for this job, and I want to say that no other person can do it better than him.”

Declare war on insecurity, Obi urges FG

Mr Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to declare war on insecurity, saying that no nation can prosper while its citizens live under siege.

Obi  posted this on his X handle on Monday,  while reacting to reports that more than 100 people were killed in violent attacks across Borno, Sokoto, Katsina, and Edo states over the weekend.

According to the former governor of Anambra, the killing of eight officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the abduction of a Chinese national in Edo, the kidnapping of passengers on the Benin–Iyere–Oluku road calls for emergency.

“The slaughter of five soldiers and 58 civilians in Borno are not isolated tragedies, these are stark evidence that Nigeria is in the grip of a full-blown security emergency.

“My deepest condolences go to the families of our fallen heroes, their courage reminds us that we still have men and women who are willing to risk everything for our safety.

“Their killers must be swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. Their sacrifices must never be forgotten.

“When over 100 Nigerians are killed in a single weekend, our casualty figures rival those of countries officially at war”, he said.

He explained that it’s time to declare a national war on insecurity, to mobilise every resource, every agency, every state, and to suspend all distractions while we begin the process of reclaiming our nation from lawlessness.

“No nation can prosper while its live under siege, history shows that insecurity is the quickest path to national collapse, Somalia and Libya stands as painful warnings.

“We must act now, with urgency and courage, to prevent a total descent into anarchy and rebuild Nigeria into a safe, secure, and productive nation for all.

Bye-election: Usman faction accuses Abure-led LP of forging court order

The Nenadi Usman faction of the Labour Party (LP) has accused the national chairman of LP, Julius Abure of alleged forgery of a Nasarawa State High Court order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to upload the list of its candidates for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections.

A statement by Senior Special Adviser, Media, to the Senator Nenadi Usman led Labour Party, Ken Asogwa, said, “The timing of this so-called court order’s release to the public is as suspicious as it is mischievous, coming on the eve of nationwide bye-elections.”

The statement is coming less than 12 hours after the Julius Abure led group presented a court order asking INEC to upload the names of their candidates for the affected council poll.

According to the statement, the court order presented by Abure refers to elections slated for February next year.

The statement said, “Given Abure’s notorious record in matters of forgery, this development, if true, would come as no surprise.

“The leadership of the Labour Party is appalled by reports circulating in certain sections of the media alleging that a Nasarawa State High Court granted an interlocutory order – purportedly at the instance of Barrister Julius Abure and his faction – directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to upload their candidates’ names for the forthcoming FCT Council elections.

“The timing of this so-called court order’s release to the public is as suspicious as it is mischievous, coming on the eve of nationwide bye-elections.

“Even more telling is the fact that the purported order – laughable as it is – specifically refers to elections slated for February next year.

“Given Abure’s notorious record in matters of forgery, this development, if true, would come as no surprise.

“Nigerians will recall his criminal manipulation during the 2023 Ebonyi State governorship election, an act for which the Attorney-General of the Federation has implicitly directed his prosecution by the police – a charge that still hangs over him like the proverbial sword of Damocles.

“Even if, in the unlikely event, this inconsequential order was genuinely obtained, Abure’s decision to engage in blatant forum shopping – running to a Nasarawa State High Court in a matter over which the Federal High Court has exclusive constitutional jurisdiction – underscores the depth of his legal and moral bankruptcy.

“Since INEC is a federal institution established by the Constitution, the High Court of Nasarawa State has no lawful standing in this matter. Such abuse of judicial process ought to attract a stern reprimand from the court against the forum shoppers.

“Meanwhile, Nigerians are not oblivious to the fact that the Supreme Court – the highest court in the land – on 4th April 2025, unequivocally removed Barrister Julius Abure from office in a landmark judgment.

“Yet, Abure and his accomplices have been shamelessly sustained and emboldened by the APC-led Federal Government, enabling them to persist in contempt of court and reckless abuse of judicial processes.

“Their unholy alliance serves one purpose alone: to undermine the Labour Party and erode our democratic institutions. In their desperation for transient political advantage, they are even willing to diminish the authority of the Supreme Court itself.”

    • ‘Security agencies harassing our leaders’

The Senator Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party (LP) has denied allegations that it plans to organize a one-million-man march against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and topple it.

The LP faction alleged that security agencies were harassing its leaders,  based on what it called “a malicious petition” purportedly written by Abayomi Arabambi, said to have impersonated LP’s spokesperson.

This was contained in a statement by Mrs. Usman’s Senior Special Adviser (Media), Ken Asogwa, yesterday in Abuja.

The faction claimed that Arabambi alleged in his petition that key LP leaders were plotting to overthrow the Tinubu administration.

The statement said: “In the said petition, Arabambi accused prominent leaders of the Labour Party, including Mr. Peter Obi, Comrade Joe Ajaero, Senator Victor Umeh, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, and Dr. Yunusa Tanko, of plotting a violent overthrow of the Bola Tinubu administration under the guise of organising a ‘One Million Man March’.

“He further alleged that the said protest, scheduled for today, July 30, 2025, is aimed at reclaiming the former national secretariat of the party currently occupied by the erstwhile chairman, Julius Abure, at Utako, Abuja.

“Let it be stated unequivocally: the leadership of the Labour Party is not aware of any planned protest anywhere in Nigeria under the auspices of the party.

“We have neither authorised nor sanctioned any individual or group to march on the streets in the name of reclaiming a property the party has long abandoned.

“As a law-abiding political party, following the Supreme Court’s ruling of April 4, 2025, which affirmed Senator Nenadi Usman’s leadership, we have formally notified relevant law enforcement agencies, urging them to enforce the judgment by vacating the illegal occupants of the former secretariat.

“Regrettably, the inertia of these agencies forced the party to relocate to a new and more secure location. Since then, the party has moved on, fully focused on its core mission.

“It is, therefore, laughable and deeply suspicious for anyone to insinuate that the Labour Party intends to forcibly reclaim a building it no longer uses.

“What is, however, more alarming is the fictitious and irresponsible allegation of a planned coup d’état against the Tinubu administration – a claim suspiciously lumped with this so-called One Million Man March.

“How an alleged protest to reclaim a party office translates to a violent toppling of a sitting government beats the imagination of any right-thinking Nigerian.

“We are already aware that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have begun harassing key party officials on the strength of this concocted tale. We warn that this path is a slippery slope that endangers our democracy.

“The Labour Party, therefore, calls on all security agencies to thoroughly investigate this malicious petition and unmask the true faces behind this sinister agenda to heat up the polity through deceit, misinformation, and fear.

Phantom coup: LP faction denies anti-Tinubu protest, alleges leaders’ harassment

The Senator Nenadi Usman-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has denied allegations of planning a one-million-man protest against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the LP’s Interim National Chairman, the party dismissed the claims as baseless and malicious, attributing them to a petition allegedly authored by Abayomi Arabambi, who the group says falsely parades himself as the party’s spokesperson.

According to the statement, Arabambi alleged that key LP leaders — including Peter Obi, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, Senator Victor Umeh, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, and Dr. Yunusa Tanko — were plotting to violently overthrow the government under the guise of organising a “One Million Man March” protest.

The Usman-led faction also claimed the alleged protest, said to be scheduled for July 30, 2025, was falsely linked to an attempt to reclaim the party’s former national secretariat, currently occupied by former chairman Julius Abure.

The group further raised alarm over what it described as targeted harassment and intimidation of its leaders by security agencies based on the “malicious” petition. It called for a thorough investigation into the matter and warned against actions that could undermine democracy and civil liberties.

“Let it be stated unequivocally: the leadership of the Labour Party is not aware of any planned protest anywhere in Nigeria under the auspices of the party.

LP loyalists celebrate Peter Obi at 64

Supporters of Labour Party (LP) and members of Obidient Movement in Lagos have described former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, as a symbol of humility, integrity and accountability, as he marks his 64th birthday.

The celebration, held in Festac Town, Lagos, drew party loyalists and admirers from across the state, many of who showered praises on Obi and reaffirmed their faith in his leadership and vision for a new Nigeria.

Amid prayers, tributes and songs of solidarity, the gathering also served as a moment of renewed hope for Obi’s political journey, with supporters urging him not to give up on the Nigerian project.

LP Lagos State chapter Financial Secretary, Oladele Egbayelo, said the celebration is a nationwide show of love and support for Obi, whom he described as the most credible leader Nigeria needs.

“We are here to celebrate our leader, Peter Obi’s 63rd birthday. This celebration is happening across all the states of Nigeria. The Labour Party and Obidient Movement are honouring him today. I wish him well in all his future endeavours. By the grace of God, come 2027, he will emerge as president. He is the best candidate we have now; his track record is clean,” Egbayelo said.

Echoing similar sentiments, Lagos coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Mr. John Alor, hailed Obi for redefining political engagement in Nigeria.

“We are celebrating a man who changed the dynamism of Nigerian politics. Instead of him following the people, we are the ones following him. I pray he has the courage to stay the course. We’ve not seen anyone like him yet in Nigeria. Maybe in the future, but for now, he is unique. I wish him long life and continued strength,” Alor said.

A former LP candidate for the Lagos State House of Assembly under the Oshodi/Isolo Constituency II, Mr. Mayor John Echefu, described Obi as an “ideology whose time has come.”

“Peter Obi is a phenomenon, the hope of the common man. He is the man Africa is waiting for to lead at the highest level. Once he emerges in 2027, there will be a new Nigeria. We are here to show him that he is not alone; Nigerian youths are solidly behind him. I wish him good health, God’s protection, long life, and prosperity,” he added.

Barrister and actor Ejike Metu, popularly known as Methuselah, gave a symbolic interpretation of Obi’s name and movement, describing them as spiritual and global.

“PO is no longer just initials; it’s a lexicon. Type ‘PO’ on Google and it brings up Peter Obi. Obidient is no longer a word; it is a culture, a movement, a spirit. You don’t have to be Igbo, Hausa, or Yoruba to be Obidient. It is recognised globally. I pray our collective efforts lead to a better Nigeria. God said He will use the weak things of the world to confound the mighty. Obi is that instrument,” Metu said.

Also speaking, Mr. Kevin Ezidimma, President General of 23 Road FG Field and President of Platoon Fitness Club, Festac, who expressed solidarity with the Obidient Movement and prayed for Obi’s success.

“We are partnering with the Obidient Movement to celebrate Peter Obi. If God has destined him to be president, it will surely come to pass. Okwute ndi Igbo, I wish you all the best. May God see you through as we remain with you till the end. You are the best among equals,” he said.

The celebration in Lagos formed part of a series of birthday events by supporters across Nigeria and the diaspora. Though absent at the Festac event, Peter Obi has often acknowledged the support of his followers, reiterating his commitment to building a just, inclusive, and prosperous Nigeria.

    • Abure: NEC meeting illegal, says Otti isolated

Hostilities resumed yesterday between the Nenadi Usman faction of Labour Party (LP) and the Julius Abure faction, with Abure and his supporters  raising hell over the election of Usman as Interim National Chairman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as Interim National Secretary.

The Abure faction disowned yesterday’s  meeting of the statutory National Executive Committee of the party in where the election took place

It also branded the gathering as illegal, unconstitutional and of no consequence, and  warned Abia State Governor  Alex Otti  to desist from expending state resources on trivialities.

National Secretary of the Abure faction, Umar Farouk claimed, in a statement, that the power  to summon such a meeting lies only  with  the National Chairman and National Secretary.

He said participants at the “illegal gathering”  were some suspended members of the party parading themselves as members of the party’s National Executive Committee.

Farouk particularly took exception to a statement by Abia State Governor Alex Otti at the meeting of the Usman faction that Abure,Lamidi Apapa (another factional leader) and “other disgruntled members” should  tender a formal apology as a condition for their reintegration into the party.

Farouk, citing Articles 14(4)(b) and 13(B)(xii) of the party’s constitution, argued that  the Umuahia  meeting lacked legitimacy and was a direct violation of internal procedures.

His words:“By the above provisions, every meeting convened by the suspended Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and the Caretaker Committee, being the product of the illegal Umuahia meeting, is unconstitutional and of no effect.

Read Also: I’m still in Labour Party, says Obi

“It is important to note that there has never been any vacancy in the leadership of the Labour Party and there will not be any until 2028.”

Besides,Farouk referenced the April 4, 2025, Supreme Court ruling that asked that  all intra-party disputes be resolved internally in accordance with the party’s constitution.

“Dr. Otti and his co-travellers must know by now that the train of the party has moved on and the party is focused ahead of the 2027 general election with or without them,” he said.

Continuing,he said:“Governor Otti is probably not aware that his flanks have been exposed as the majority of his combatants and leaders have deserted him and moved on. He is probably living in ignorance and in the past.”

He told Otti to “channel the Abia State resources to providing basic infrastructure for the good people of the state rather than wasting resources chasing shadows.”

Usman-led NWC to remain until national convention

The Senator Usman led interim national working committee elected yesterday is expected to run the affairs of the party until the election of new officials at the party’s national conevention, according to a communiqué issued yesterday.

The meeting also approved  a timetable  for the conduct of ward congresses, local government area congresses, state congresses, Zonal congresses, and the National Convention of the Labour Party.

The National Secretariat of the party is to publish the guidelines and timelines to ensure transparent and democratic elections at all levels.

Speaking at the meeting,National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) ,Joe Ajaero, declared that the congress “which formed the party is very much”  with the LP faction led by Usman and “ we have not abandoned the party.”

“I want us to be focused, not distracted,” he said.

On his part,Gov.Otti said  the statutory NEC meeting was a fallout of  the recent ruling of the Supreme Court which, according to him, affirmed Usman as the national chairperson of the party.

He said: “as law-abiding people, we felt we should obey the Supreme Court judgement, and what we are here to do is to begin a structured process by formalizing some key committees like the interim national working committee, which will oversee all party activities till the party’s convention, when elections for a new NEC will be conducted.”
