2027: One term enough for any leader to make impact – Obi

The presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, says a four-year single term is enough for any serious and sincere leader to make impact in Nigeria.

Obi, in a statement issue by the Spokesman of Peter Obi Media Reports, Ibrahim Umar, on Monday in Abuja, also said that a single term of four years, particularly in 2027, would respect zoning and stabilise the polity.

“One term is enough to establish that good governance is possible, and if they can impact negatively on us for just two years, why won’t someone achieve a lot in four years?

“It’s also to respect the gentleman’s agreement of zoning, which has been a stabilising factor, even though it’s not in our constitution.

“I don’t need a day more than four years. I will show the direction of good governance.

“Two years can change it in a good direction. People want to get up and see a president who cares and shows compassion,” he said.

Obi, who reiterated his determination to run for the presidency again in 2027, said that he was qualified for the office.

“I’m going to contest for the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” he said.

On the possibility of his becoming a running mate to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 election, Obi said: “This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that.

“People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A, B or C.”

He also dispelled the speculations that he had left Labour Party, following his open support for the coalition which had adopted African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking on coalition with persons known to have played key roles in previous administrations, Obi explained that their experience was key to preventing the government he intends to form from failing.

“Their experience is critical. I can tell you one of the major companies in the world hired two people who had worked in failed companies because they can tell you why they failed.

“You need the experience of those who have failed and those who have succeeded in moving on, and I need everyone.

“It is a critical experience because they know what can fail a system and they know what was wrong with the system,” he said.

  • I’m still in Labour Party, says Obi

I’m still in Labour Party, says Obi

“I remain a member of Labour Party (LP),” former Anambra State Governor insisted yesterday despite his romance with the platform adopted by opposition figures – African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He said his involvement in the coalition was to stop President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second term bid in office and to introduce a “better government”.

Obi, who was at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja for the unveiling of the Atiku Abubakar-led coalition last week, reiterated his interest in taking another shot at the presidency in 2027.

He promised to spend for only one-term of four years if given the chance.

One-time Senate President David mark was named Interim National Chairman of the adopted ADC. Former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola and a former Sports Development Minister Bolaji Abdullahi were picked as National Secretary and Publicity Secretary in interim capacities.

According to Obi, the coalition decided to adopt the ADC for the purpose of contesting the 2027 election.

He said: “The coalition just adopted ADC for 2027. We are trying to work together for the sake of Nigeria and Nigerians.

“Today, I’m a member of the LP, but we have all agreed to work in a coalition for 2027 election. We want better governance in this country. We want to see more competent government with character.

“We can’t say for now whether we’re going to leave one party or not. What we’ve done is a coalition.”

Dismissing allegations that he was engaging in anti-party activity, the former governor said: “There’s no anti-party in this. We’re not abandoning where we are.”

He also denied claims that  he has been tipped as running mate to Atiku.

“Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I’m going to be anything. What I know is that I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and I believe I am qualified for it,” Obi said.

On whether the coalition is Atiku-led, Obi said he does not believe in assumption.  “This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C.”

He said: “My goal as a leader is to change those who need the change. You need some who have been in bad government because their experience is critical.

“One of the main agenda of the coalition is to change Tinubu-led government by all lawful means. This is so because we have seen the incompetence, the failure, and lack of capacity. We just need to do this for sake of our children.”

On why he wants to run in 2027, he said the signs are all over that things are not improving, adding that if he becomes the president, he will govern with the constitution and do everything with civility.

He said: “If given the chance, I’ll not do more than four years. A lot can be achieved within that time frame. Nobody expects 100 per cent result; they expect 100 per cent sacrifice and service. I don’t need a day more than four years.”

He said he would have headed to Ibadan on Decemeber 19 last year where 18 pupils died in a stampede.

“On December 18, some children died in Ìbadan, Oyo State. On December 19, the President travelled to Lagos for Christmas holiday. I won’t do that. I’ll go to Ibadan’, look for the parents of those children and cry with them.”

According to him, he never worked for the late Head of State, Gen, Sani Abacha, before he became governor in Anambra.

Obi said: “I’ve never worked for any government before I became a governor. I was a very successful business man and everyone knows that.

“What happened was that Abacha came up with a policy of closing all ports. That led to congestion. So, some of us in business decided to see Abacha on that policy.

“We met with the then Minister of Finance and we were able to make our points clear. So, a committee was set up to decongest the ports and I was nominated to serve on that committee. I never met Abacha. I don’t know him.”

Nenadi-led LP dismisses resignation ultimatum to Obi

The Labour Party faction led by its acting chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, said no ultimatum has been issued to its presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi.

The faction of the party led by Julius Abure had given Obi a 48-hour ultimatum to resign from the party following his participation in yesterday’s coalition movement to the African Democratic Congress.

In a statement by Ken Eluma Asogwa, senior special adviser, media, to Usman, the party said that on May 26, 2025, it publicly declared its full support for Obi’s involvement in the coalition efforts aimed at creating a “robust political alternative to rescue Nigeria from the disastrous misrule of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement said, “The attention of the Labour Party has been drawn to misleading reports and commentaries suggesting that His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, has been issued a 48-hour ultimatum to resign from the party following his participation in the recent coalition talks and the unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the leadership of the Labour Party, on May 26, 2025, publicly declared its full support for Mr. Obi’s involvement in the coalition efforts aimed at creating a robust political alternative to rescue Nigeria from the disastrous misrule of the APC. That position has not changed.

“We wish to reaffirm that Mr. Peter Obi’s participation in the coalition activities, including the ADC unveiling, was done with the full knowledge, approval, and support of the Labour Party leadership.

“The individuals claiming to have issued an ultimatum to Mr. Obi are political jesters with no legitimate standing in the Labour Party. They are neither recognised by the party nor by the law, having long been sacked by the Supreme Court of Nigeria – the highest court in the land – and suspended from the party for their serial acts of indiscipline and anti-party activities.

“It is the remnants of the disorder and mess left behind by these impostors that the current leadership under Senator Nenadi Usman continues to clean. Therefore, members of the public, and especially the media, are urged to disregard the distractions and mischief from these discredited elements.

“For clarity, the only legitimate and authoritative source of information regarding the official position of the Labour Party on any matter remains the office of Senator Nenadi Usman, Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party.”

Obi’s coalition project affront to party leadership – LP

The Labour Party has carpeted its former presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, for associating with leaders of a coalition against President Bola Tinubu after it ruled out participating in any coalition ahead of the 2027 election.

The party said that Obi’s continued association with the coalition was not only distasteful but unacceptable to it.

The national publicity secretary of the Julius Abure-led faction, Obiora Ifoh, said this in a statement on Monday.

The party said that Obi’s romance with pro-coalition leaders was confusing, adding that the former Anambra State governor had not come to terms with his intentions for the 2027 presidential race.

The statement also said that the Labour Party presidential ticket for the 2027 election was open to anyone who wants to run under its platform.

It said, “The attention of the leadership of the Labour Party has been drawn to the news trending in the media that the party is ‘celebrating’ that its candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has declared his intention to run on the platform of the party in 2027. I want to state emphatically that I was quoted out of context and therefore, the impression conveyed by the news was erroneous, inaccurate and does not in any way reflect the position and mood in the party.

“First, while we are not opposed to anybody running under the platform of the Labour Party in the 2027 general election, we need to make it categorically clear that the party has a long-standing rule on how its candidates shall emerge, and an automatic ticket is not one of the routes.

“Recall that at the party’s National Convention in 2024, the party had erroneously granted automatic tickets to our former Presidential candidate and the only governor of the party, however, that decision has since been rescinded and reversed after consulting the statute books.

“Second, His Excellency, Peter Obi, hours after he spoke of his intention to run under the Labour Party, was on Sunday (yesterday Sunday) seen in a meeting of a pro-coalition group in Abuja without the permission and consent of the Labour Party leadership.

“This to us is confusing, and we think that Peter Obi has not come to terms with his intentions for the 2027 presidential race.

“We have consistently said that the Labour Party will not go into any coalition or merger of any sort ahead of the 2027 general election, therefore, Obi’s continued association with the coalition is not only distasteful but unacceptable to the party.

“It is also an affront to the party leadership, and we view his position as a total disregard for the party’s right to make decisions governing its affairs.

“We are therefore, by this statement, letting Nigerians know that the presidency for 2027 is open to anyone who wants to run under the platform of the party.”

He said that Ipinlaye polled 56 delegate votes to defeat his rival, Mr Taiwo Akinseyi, who scored six votes, while a vote was voided.

Responding after the declaration, Ipinlaye, who expressed excitement, assured delegates that he would not fail the people.

  • Lagos LG polls: Three Labour Party factions invite LASIEC for primaries

Lagos LG polls: Three Labour Party factions invite LASIEC for primaries

…we’re going on with chairmanship primaries – Ekong

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has disclosed that three different factions of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos state have applied to participate in the upcoming July 12 local government elections.

Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), Chairman of LASIEC, made this disclosure on Thursday, during a stakeholders’ forum, themed: “Enhancing a Credible and Inclusive Local Government Elections in Lagos, held in Ikeja.

Okikiolu-Ighile stated that the three factions each invited LASIEC to observe their respective primaries ahead of the elections.

“Three factions of the Labour Party in Lagos invited us to observe their primaries,” she said.

However, LASIEC did not honour the invitations due to the perceived divisions within the party.

“LASIEC officials did not attend their primaries today (Thursday) because of the perceived division in the party,” Okikiolu-Ighile added.

The LASIEC boss further explained that the electoral body is currently awaiting guidance from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the appropriate steps to take concerning the Labour Party’s participation in the local government polls.

“We are waiting for INEC’s advice on the next steps regarding the situation with the LP,” she concluded.

The development has raised concerns over the Labour Party’s preparedness and unity ahead of the crucial local government elections, as LASIEC aims to ensure credibility and inclusivity in the electoral process.

Meanwhile, the party chairman, Mrs. Dayo Ekong, who confirmed that the party held its councillorship primaries today (Thursday), said its chairmanship primaries will go on tomorrow as planned.

According, there is no controversy over who is the authentic Labour Party group LASIEC should relate with, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had since settled that with LASIEC.

“Yes, I am aware of the situation.  I can tell you that INEC, being the custodian of political parties, had since written to LASIEC on who LASIEC should relate with.

“I don’t know why LASIEC is still talking about three groups in our party that have been resolved. I see no reason why that should be an issue. I don’t understand the game LASIEC is playing.

“Though we wrote to LASIEC about our councillorship primaries today, we noticed that they were there.

“Anyway, constitutionally, it is not mandatory that they should be there. INEC has the final say in this.

“As planned, we shall be going with our chairmanship primaries tomorrow in all the local governments.

“LASIEC is playing with fire. If INEC had recognised the authentic people, who are under watch, I see no reason why they were not there.  Anyway, the guideline does not say that they must be there.

Ekong also denied membership in some of the sponsors of the factions.

“Some of them are not our members.  They do not have the locus standi for doing what they do.  All they are doing is transactional, and we are not bothered by that because the members know the authentic group.”

LP suspends Lagos chair, dissolves ward executives

The Labour Party in Lagos State has announced the suspension of its former state chairperson, Pastor Dayo Ekong and another party official, Sam Okpala, over alleged gross misconduct and violation of the party’s constitution.

In a statement following a meeting of the Lagos State Caretaker Executive Committee, the party also announced the dissolution of all Local Government and Ward Executive Committees across the state. The decision, according to the statement, was aimed at restoring order and constitutional compliance within the party’s state structure.

The statement was jointly signed by Rotimi Odunaike, Chairman of the Lagos State Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party, and Dorcas I. Omorodion, Secretary of the Committee.

It explained the reasons behind the disciplinary actions taken against the former leadership.

Pastor Dayo Ekong, who previously held the dual roles of State Chairman and National Financial Secretary of the party, was suspended for six months, with the party citing constitutional breaches and misconduct.

“The former state Chairman of the party, Pastor (Mrs) Dayo Ekong, is hereby suspended for six months for gross misconduct and breach of the constitution of the party by holding the offices of the state chairman and national financial secretary at the same time,” the statement reads.

All members of the former state executive committee were also handed a six-month suspension for what the party described as “anti-party activities” and their failure to uphold the party’s constitution.

“Every member of the erstwhile state executive committee is suspended for six months for failure to uphold the constitution of the party and for anti-party activities,” the caretaker chairman, Odunaike, declared.

The sweeping changes also affected the grassroots leadership as the committee announced the immediate dissolution and suspension of all Local Government and Ward Executive Committees appointed by the Ekong-led administration.

“All the Local Government and Ward Executive Committees in Lagos State appointed by the Pastor (Mrs) Dayo Ekong-led Exco are hereby dissolved and their members suspended for six months for anti-party activities, with immediate effect,” the statement added.

The development marks a major shake-up within the Lagos chapter of the Labour Party.

Ex-presidential aspirant: LP crisis is karma for betrayal

    • Says Obi’s candidacy was an injustice

A former presidential aspirant of the Labour Party (LP), Faduri Joseph, has attributed  the ongoing crisis in the party to the betrayal he suffered in 2022.

Faduri who described the crisis in the party as ‘poetic justice’ in a statement yesterday alleged that he was edged out in favour of Peter Obi by key party figures after manipulating the presidential primary process.

He averred that his political structure in the party was hijacked in spite of laying the foundation for a credible third-force alternative.

His words: “What is happening in the Labour Party today is nothing short of poetic justice — a karma unfolding before the very eyes of the nation.

“It is the consequence of the injustice, betrayal, and deceit done to me and my team in 2022, when some leaders of the party connived to rob me of the presidential ticket — a ticket we labored tirelessly to build — and handed it over to Mr. Peter Obi.

“In 2022, LP was a dead structure — no plan, no preparation, no hope. I reached out to its national leaders, including Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, Alhaji Lamidi Apapa, and Barr. Julius Abure. I rallied my team, invested resources, and reawakened the sleeping giant.

“I took it upon myself to appear on national television and newspapers, promoting the Labour Party to Nigerians, without the backing of any godfather.

“I encouraged party leaders to become visible, and we began to build a credible third force. Congresses were held across the country ahead of the 2022 primary in Asaba, but the process was abruptly disrupted.

“But just five days before our primaries, those same leaders sold their conscience. They betrayed me and handed the ticket to Mr. Peter Obi in exchange for money. I was forced out of the race,” the ex-presidential aspirant said.

Faduri  who is the leader of the Rescue Movement for a New Nigeria (RM), likened himself to the biblical David, claiming he was capable of defeating “every Goliath” in that election.

“But they allowed greed and personal gain to blind them. After I was unjustly removed, the peace and unity we had built collapsed. The party has not known true peace since,” he said.

“But I made it clear: the candidacy of Peter Obi was built on injustice. No matter how loud the noise or how vast the donations, the foundation was flawed. And just as they cheated me, the system cheated them in return.”

The former LP presidential aspirant said the party leadership lacks the moral standing to lead Nigeria into the future.

“I remain a member of Labour Party, but I have not yet decided the platform on which I will run in 2027. What I do know is this: I will run again for the presidency of Nigeria in 2027” he said.
