NLC mobilises members to take over LP offices

The Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) has directed its members to mobilise ahead of taking over offices of the Labour Party(LP) nationwide following the Supreme Court ruling that sacked Julius Abure as National Chairman of the party.

In a statement by its President, Joe Ajaero, the NLC directed the LP National Executive Committee (NEC) to appoint an interim leadership which will conduct an inclusive Special National Convention for the party in line with the provisions of the LP Constitution and the consent judgement.

“To resolve the leadership vacuum in the Labour Party, the surviving institutional members of the LP National Executive Committee (NEC) are expected to appoint an interim leadership which will conduct an inclusive Special National Convention for the party in line with the provisions of the LP Constitution and the consent judgement. Any step outside these constitutional procedures will be an affront to the rule of law and would be tantamount to an unmitigable assault on constitutional rule. Such mischief will be stoutly resisted by Nigerian workers and people,” the statement partly reads.

It added: “We use this medium to put every Nigerian worker, labour party members and patriotic citizens on alert. We will no longer condone the antics of inconsequential characters like Mr. Julius Abure whose only relevance is their availability for mischief and inanity at the behest of silhouettes in the corridors of power.

“The Supreme Court is one of the most enduring institutions and beacons of not only the rule of law but our sovereignty as a country. Nigerian workers and people, especially genuine members of the Labour Party will not sit back and watch unscrupulous elements desecrate Nigeria’s laws and the well-founded judgement of the Supreme Court.

” If we fail to take action, it means that we have accepted the complete deconstruction of the institutions of state and the desecration of the shared values that bind all of us as one people under constitutional rule.

“As authentic Labour Party leaders known to all Nigerians continue to take steps to recover and reposition the party as the vehicle for the emancipation of the Nigerian masses, we wish to warn that characters like Julius Abure should advise themselves to recuse themselves from the path of complete self-destruction they have embarked upon through their headless and heedless affront to the judgment of the Supreme Court that has swept their existence into oblivion. Just as we warned him about a year ago that Nigerian workers and genuine members of the Labour Party will always collect what belongs to them no matter how long a mischief lasts.

“By this communication, we urge every worker in Nigeria, all genuine members of the Labour Party and all lovers of democracy to be on standby to once again peacefully repossess all offices of the Labour Party nationwide. The leadership of the NLC Political Commission and other concerned Labour Party stakeholders will issue necessary directives to this effect.”

The congress put the security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service on notice, saying that they have a constitutional duty to enable and enforce the judgement of the Supreme Court.

It also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to remove every insignia of Abure and his National Working Committee from its portals.

“We are also putting all the security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service on notice that they have a constitutional duty to enable and enforce the judgement of the Supreme Court. We expect their cooperation as we pursue the rule of law. Any action to the contrary, will present our dear country as a banana republic.

“Finally, we call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which had always pleaded alignment with the pronouncement of the court of law in the leadership issues in the Labour Party to give full effect to the conclusive judgment of the Supreme Court by removing every insignia of Mr. Julius Abure and his National Working Committee from its portals.”

Responding to the threat by the NLC to take over its offices, National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh said the NLC has no right to attack any of its offices because there is no trade dispute.

The party said the latest threat by the NLC is “pure blackmail on INEC and security agencies to do the wrong thing.”

Ifoh, in a statement on Wednesday morning in Abuja, said the party would take every legal means to “deal with Ajero and his gangsters should they attempt to resort to self help.”

The statement reads: “The attention of the Labour Party leadership has been drawn to a statement issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero threatening to attack the offices of the Labour Party across the nation. Ordinarily, we would have ignored that threat but  there is need to assure our teeming members of our commitment to keep the fate and resist all forms of rascality and intimidation from persons who think themselves to be above the laws of the land

“We therefore see NLC’s latest threat as pure blackmail on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and security agencies to do the wrong thing.

“The Supreme Court is clear about party leadership in which the courts have no business. The Supreme Court stated  that courts can not interfere in the internal affairs of  a political party.  The Courts didn’t sack the NWC nor held the tenure to have lapsed. We advise  Joe Ajaero and his ilks to seek legal advice if they can not comprehend a simple court pronouncement.

“Nigerians will recall that the Labour Party executive that was elected in 2019 whose tenure was to expire in June 2023, was extended in Asaba for one year by the National Executive Committee of which NLC attended and played a key role. The tenure was to end in June 2024, however, before the end of that duration, the National Convention was conducted in March 2024 in line with our party constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act as amended which ushered in the present leadership. There has never been any vacuum in the leadership of the Labour Party.

“We must note that we didn’t go to court with Nenadi Usman or any other person on  account of leadership because leadership was not in dispute. We only went to court to compel INEC to give us uploading code for Ondo state governorship election. This was the case when Nenadi Usman and Mr Nwokocha came to join.

“We had warned them against the illegality of convening an unauthorised NEC meeting in Umuahia. Every outcome of that meeting is inconsequential, null and void, and of no value. They are again aggregating in Abuja this Wednesday in furtherance of their illegality.

“Threats to attack offices and organizations have become the hallmark of the NLC under Ajaero. Recall that in 2024, NLC forcefully broke into our national headquarters carting away valuables. That matter was reported to the police. The recent threat to invade our office was leaked to us by some members of the NLC, hence we alerted the nation.

“Ajaero should by now learn that attacking law-abiding citizens, hooliganism and rascality is not a trait of a good unionist. He should be concerned more about workers welfare. He has since politicised the Labour Union in Nigeria and he is no longer fit to occupy that exalted office. We have once advised him to quit unionism and join politics but he will not listen.

“We must state categorically that the NLC has no right to attack any Labour Party office because there is no trade dispute. Based on the trade dispute Act, you can not picket or declare a strike without  a trade dispute. In any case, we do not have any staff of the NLC in our employment. There is no Union in our offices.  their action is purely an illegality.

“Let it be known that we will take every legal means to deal with Ajaero and his gangsters should they attempt to resort to self help. We will not hesitate to write to the Registrar of Trade Union to discipline them if they resort to taking laws into their own hands.

“Finally, we will seek the protection of the security agencies but where they defy the security agencies, we will have no option but to mobilise our members across the nation to resist them.”

Labour Party threatens to sanction Obi, Otti for planning ‘illegal’ NEC

…strips House caucus leader of position

     ….saysAbure remains national chairman

The Labour Party leadership led by Julius Abure faction has threatened to sanction the only governor produced by the party in the 2023 general election, Alex Otti for anti-party activities.

The party also cautioned its former presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Obi not to participate in any action capable of undermining the peace, unity, and integrity of the party.

The National Executive Committee of the party presided over by Abure who was sacked by the Supreme Court ruling of Friday, noted that it would not hesitate to issue stiffer penalties if Obi was found culpable.

The party took the decisions during its NEC meeting in Abuja on Monday.

The NEC accused Otti of plotting to cripple the party before jumping ship to contest the 2027 governorship election.

It described the NEC meeting of the caretaker committee called by Obi and Otti for Wednesday as illegal.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting and signed by Abure (National Chairman) and Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim (National Secretary), the party said: “NEC in session notes the various anti-party activities of Gov. Alex Otti, including calling of unauthorised Stakeholders meeting and usurping the powers of NEC. He also conducted LGA Election using another Political Party.

“The governor has also intensified his effort to factionalise the party leadership by calling an illegal NEC schedule to hold on Wednesday. The leadership of the Labour Party is also aware of the Governor’s plot to cripple our party before moving to another political party where he hopes to contest the 2027 Governorship Election.

“His anti-party activities is unbecoming of highly respected personality and can no longer be acceptable, NEC stated that it will not hesitate to discipline him in line with Article 19 of the Party’s Constitution.

“NEC in session in exercise of its duties, hereby caution the former presidential candidate of our great party not to participate in any action capable of undermining the peace unity, and integrity of the party as the NEC will not hesitate to issue stiffer penalty if found culpable”

The party insisted that the Supreme Court ruling didn’t sack the National Working Committee led by Abure.

Instead, the NEC of the party reaffirmed the Nnewi National Convention held on the 27th of March 2024 that produced the current NWC members under the chairmanship of Barrister Julius Abure.

It condemned the activities of the Caretaker Committee “illegally established by Alex Otti and Peter Obi in a so-called Stakeholders meeting held on the 4th of September 2024 in Umuahia.”

“The NEC in session believes very strongly that the present National Working Committee will lead the party in subsequent elections to victory and therefore reimpose their confidence in the NWC,” the party said.

The party also stripped its House of Representatives Caucus leader, Victor Ogene of his position and appointed Barrister Ben Etanabene as the Caucus Leader in the House.

“NEC in session reviewed the activities of the House of Representatives Caucus leader, Honourable Victor Adam Ogene and wishes to note as follow: That the voice of the current leadership of the party is not being heard in the hallowed lower chambers; that there is a lack of cohesion amongst our members in the House; that the leadership appears to be compromised; and that the ideology and programs of the party are not well represented.

“NEC in session, as result of the aforementioned, decided to relieve Honourable Ogene of that leadership role for dereliction of duty. Consequently Hon. Barrister Ben Etanabene has been appointed by the NEC in session as the Labour Party’s Caucus Leader in the House of Representatives. NEC mandated the NWC to communicate the decision to relevant authorities.

“He is to hand over all the party’s properties in his possession, particularly all the financial contributions made so far by other Labour Party lawmakers which are in his possession to the party, and render proper account to the party with immediate effect.

“The party will go to any length to retrieve all its belongings, including monies that belong to it which Hon. Ogene is holding tight too.”

Labour Party alerts police, DSS over alleged NLC plot to invade national secretariat

The Labour Party (LP) has raised the alarm over an alleged plan by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to storm its national secretariat in Abuja with the help of thugs.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the party’s National Secretary, Umar Ibrahim, the LP accused the NLC of collaborating with the Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee (NCC) and the National Transition Committee (NTC) to orchestrate the planned invasion.

The LP called on the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to intervene and prevent a possible breakdown of law and order.

Efforts to reach the Chairman of the NLC Political Commission, Prof. Theophilus Ndubaku, were unsuccessful as he said he was in a meeting at the time of filing this report.

The crisis within the Labour Party deepened following the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 5, with the Julius Abure-led faction maintaining its grip on the party’s leadership.

The statement reads: “It has come to the knowledge of the leadership of the Labour Party that the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC is mobilizing its members, hired thugs and some miscreants in concert with the illegal Nenadi Usman led National Caretaker Committee (NCC), and the National Transition Committee (NTC) to invade the National Secretariat of our party.

“According to the source, the invasion which is allegedly funded by the Abia state government and one other prominent leader in the party is expected to commence as from Monday 7th of April 2025.

“During the invasion, the NLC will attempt an unlawful break and entry into offices at the national headquarters with the aim of carting away sensitive documents and to also vandalise the properties belonging to the party.

“We view this action which is capable of breaching the peace of the Federal Capital Territory as irresponsible and an evidence of desperation on the NLC. The Labour Union which the laws that founded it forbids them from partisan politics has at different occasions in the past mobilized miscreants to desecrate the National Headquarters of the party and vandalised the properties.

“It must be noted that the judgement of the Supreme Court delivered on the 5th of April, 2025 is very clear and unambiguous. The judgement simply mandates political parties to always resolve their crisis using internal mechanisms, and that the issue of leadership is an internal affairs of the political parties. There is no where in the judgement that gave NLC, National Caretaker Committee or any other body by whatever nomenclature to take over the leadership of the Labour Party

“There is a leadership in place in the Labour Party and Barrister Julius Abure who was validly elected at a convention held in March 2024 still remains the National Chairman of the Labour Party. Any attempt to forcefully usurp the present leadership will be resisted.

“We are by this statement calling on the attention of the security agencies including the Police, the DSS amongst others to ensure that any activity that is capable of breaching the peace of the FCT must be nipped in the bud and that the masterminds, no matter how high they might be, are apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.”

FULL LIST: 17 popular politicians who have dumped Labour Party

Since the establishment of the Labour Party (LP), it has struggled like all others to break the dominance of both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But since a former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi joined the party in May 2022 after dumping the PDP and withdrawing as a presidential aspirant, the party suddenly sprang to life, with burgeoning supporters, especially the youths.

Obi’s presence gave a huge boost to the aspirations of different individuals who contested different positions under the insignia of the Labour Party.

Checks by The Nation revealed that different Labour Party chieftains and staunch members have defected and moved to either APC or PDP.

    Why I attended Labour Party legislator’s event—Nwifuru

Gov. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi has explained that he attended an event organised by a labour party legislator from the state because politics is not enmity.

Nwifuru said this on Monday at Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area, during the empowerment programme of member representing Ohaoazara/ Onicha/ Ivo Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Nkemkanma Kama.

The governor said that he attended the event because politics should be about collaboration in the overall interest of the state and country.

“Kama is supposed to be my enemy as he belongs to another party but he has turned out to be my friend.

“After election comes governance. That is why I came with leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, including its chairman,” he said.

He said Kama had aligned with this ideology by also identifying with his administration.

“Any time I am engaged in any activity even child naming ceremony, Kama is always there.

“I advise him to join APC before the door is closed as I will campaign for the candidate of my party during elections.

“He should also ensure that these items get to APC members so that they would speak good of him when he eventually joins,” he said.

Kama in his remarks, thanked the governor and all the state’s leaders who attended the programme, saying that Nwifuru takes him as a brother and friend.

“I also thank the leadership of the House of Representatives and stakeholders of the constituency as their selflessness and commitment testify to the communal spirit in us,” he said.

The lawmaker said the items include tricycles, motorcycles, grinding machines, sewing machines, hair dryers, knapsacks, among others.

“These items are designed to support our constituents in their various endeavours, whether in local transportation, commerce, personal development, among others.

“We selected the beneficiaries based on the state governor’s detribalised approach of inclusivity and fairness, irrespective of political affiliation.

Labour Party asks court to declare seats of defected lawmakers vacant

The Labour Party (LP) on Thursday said it has filed actions in an unnamed court to compel the National Assembly leadership to declare the seats of its defected lawmakers vacant.

According to the party, the suit also seeks that every salary, emolument or privileges received by the defectors from the date of defection, be returned to LP.

The party said this in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Party, Obiora Ifoh on Thursday in Abuja.

The House of Representatives member representing Jos South/Jos East, Akangbe Illiya on Thursday announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress.

This brings the number of lawmakers who have left the party to the APC to five rep members.

The party condemned the defection like similar ones before it, saying it was “quite unfortunate and condemnable.”

The statement reads: “The leadership of the Labour Party again received with dismay news of the betrayal of the people of Jos South/Jos East by Mr. Akangbe Illiya, a man whom the Labour Party and the people of Plateau State entrusted with their collective hopes and aspirations for a just and equitable society through legislation.

“Hon. Illiya who just engraved his name on the Labour Party ‘Hall of Shame’ Register has brought dishonour to himself through this action.

“While it is true that the constitution guarantees citizens the right to freedom of association, the constitution qualifies such rights regarding the membership of political parties.

“The law does not protect an individual who steals the mandate of a people and a political party to run into another without first surrendering the mandate he deceitfully acquired.

“This defection like similar ones before it is quite unfortunate and condemnable. Section 68(g) of the 1999 constitution is emphatic on when to defect and what happens when a lawmaker sponsored by a political party decides to jump ship.

“It is unnecessary probing why most of the defectors chose the All Progressives Congress (APC) as their destination point and why the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Tajudeen Abass has refused to respect the provisions of the constitution by declaring their seats vacant.

“However, those politicians who have chosen to abandon the people at this crucial time in their lives are the ones who deserve pity because they have exposed themselves as unworthy of our collective trust going forward.

“Meanwhile, the Party has since filed actions in the court to compel the National Assembly leadership to declare the seats of the defected Labour Party lawmakers vacant. The suit also seeks that every salary, emolument or privileges received, from the date of defection, be returned.”

JUST IN: Uproar in Reps as another LP member joins APC

The plenary of the House of Representatives went up in uproar on Thursday morning as members of the opposition protested the defection of another member of the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The member representing Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency of Plateau state announced his defection to the APC.

However, his decision was greeted by an uproar by opposition members who insisted that his seat should be declared vacant.

His defection to the APC which brings to six the number of Labour Party members to have defected within one week was witnessed by former Plateau state governor, Senator Simon Lalong.

In his letter of defection read at plenary by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, the Lawmaker said he was defecting in view of the crisis in the Labour Party and the need to align with the policies and developmental initiative of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu led APC government.

In addition, the Plateau Lawmaker said that he believe that his decision to offer effective representation to his constituency will better be met while in the fold of the APC.

He said further that as a result of the current crisis in the party, he finds it difficult to align with LP’s approach to national issues, adding that he will play basketball more effective role of ensuring peace building.

He stressed that his defection was not based on any personal gains, but his desire to  contribute to national development in general and plateau state in particular.

However Deputy Minority Whip, George Ozodinobi did not oppose the defection, saying however that even though there is no crisis in the LP, he would not want to repeat the same thing all over again.

He said “I want to wish all those defecting and those who may wish to do so and believe that the APC is their best destination good luck. We will be waiting to meet them again in 2027 if they will be here. The end will justify the means”.

Minority Leader, Kingsley China said the letter of defection should not be accepted by the House because it was not ripe because the Lawmaker has not fulfil the constitutional provision to do so.

He said the Plateau Lawmaker should first go back to his ward and join the APC. before coming back to the House with his letter and then be prepared to face the consequences.

He accused the House of putting the cart before the Horse and accepting the letter of defection without the lawmaker complying with the provisions of the Constitution.

However, Yusuf Adamu Gagdi (APC, Plateau) said the sections of the Constitution being cited by the Minority Leader was quite clear to all members, adding that the defecting member has fulfill all conditions precedent.

He said moreover, section 40 of the Constitution grant permission to anybody to form or join a political party, stressing that out of the 8 members of the House of Representatives from. plateau state, seven of them are presently members of the APC.

Mark Esset (PDP, Akwa Ibom) said as lawmakers, members of the parliament must show to the Nigerian people that they are not law breakers by correctly applying the provisions of the Constitution.

But former Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Idris Wade warned against wrong use of words in Parliament, adding that what the Speaker did in accepting the defectiob letter was in order.
