Lagos Assembly crisis: Plenary resumption unlikely soon amid ongoing litigation

The leadership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly is far from over. The possibility of resuming plenary sessions anytime soon is bleak.

The ongoing litigation between Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and 36 lawmakers have brought the legislative activities to a grinding halt.

Although a date for the latest adjournment in the case between Obasa and the lawmakers at the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, will be communicated to the parties involved.

The ruling is the latest development in the contentious case, which has seen multiple applications and counter arguments.

The case, which came up on Monday 17 March, was full of expectations that all cases would be withdrawn and the business of the House of Assembly would continue.

This was because the lawmakers were at the weekend preceding the March 17 adjournment in Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, at the behest of President Bola Tinubu to call the warring factions to order.

After the closed door meeting, they left the villa seemingly happy, chanting ‘on your mandate we shall stand,’ only for the case to commence on Monday without any hint that it would be withdrawn.

In fact, when the court sat in the morning  and adjourned to 2pm, it was thought that they went to fine tune the withdrawals but alas, it was not so.

As the case continues, the business of making laws and making life easy for Lagosians remain on hold till further notice.

At the Federal level, the House of Representatives is required to sit for a minimum period of 181 plenary sessions in a year, the Lagos State Assembly’s inactivity is raising concerns.

However, there is no clear cut out period of plenary sessions in a year for state assemblies.

Political watchers are worried that should this case last the whole year, then nothing would have been achieved in the state and there is no justification for receiving their salaries and other related benefits.

Another issue why  plenary may not hold as the cases are ongoing is whether the lawmakers themselves will attend plenary and cooperate with the Speaker 36 of them locking horns in court with Obasa.

It could still be the same four members (Ayinde Akinsanya, Mushin 1; Noheem Adams, Eti- Osa Constituency 2; Abdulkareem Ayodeji, Agege 2; Hon. Olumoh  Sa’ad Lukman, Ajeromi –Ifelodun Constituency 1) on the side of the Speaker that may likely attend plenary which is not enough to form a quorum thereby invalidating whatever law that may emanate from the House.

In spite of the imbroglio, it is on record that lawmakers sat more than they did this same time last year.

It was gathered that they went on a six-week break and resumed almost at Ramadan period to sit once or twice a week because of the fast.

This year, lawmakers sat a period of seven times since the former Speaker, Hon. Meranda took over on January 13.

Within 49 days, she set a record of five times. Obasa sat twice. The first was when security operatives invaded the Assembly with the withdrawal of the security of Madam Speaker.

He presided with four lawmakers on his side and the second one was when Meranda resigned. He again presided and adjourned sine dine till date.

Obasa returned from his trip abroad after his impeachment to insist that he remains Speaker. The APC moved in and a lot of intrigues took place which led to his reinstatement. He also went to court to challenge the process that led to his impeachment, maintaining that he was illegally removed.

Oluwole Kehinde, Editor, Nigeria Weekly Law Report shares his perspective on the situation.

He says: “My position surrounding the whole issue of the Lagos State House of Assembly is a picture that shows that the Assembly itself is not independent and that all is not well. It erodes public confidence in the institution.

Moreover, the intervention by external forces in an open and brazen manner dictating what the assembly should do and how they should go about their business does not portend a good future for democracy. And I think that it is certainly not the best for our system.

To me, it is not right, it is not proper and it is condemnable. Unfortunately, nobody cares about what happens again around our political institutions because it is either people are settled or people are looking for what to benefit or people who have good intentions are shut out and all you have is promotion of political interest at the expense of the public interests and good governance.

At the end of the day, our politicians and their supporters benefit while society suffers.”

Activist and lawyer Monday Ubani advised the lawmakers to settle their differences and continue their legislative duties, noting that the state will suffer if the crisis persists.

“If they have cases in court, that means that they have not been doing their legislative duties. That also means they have not yet resolved the problem. Thank God they have not gone to the Rivers State situation.

“I think that they have been able to come to a compromise. Of course, the state will suffer for it but my advice to them is that they should settle whatever differences they have for the interest of the state and continue in their legislative duties,” he said.

BREAKING: Protesters storm streets in Abuja, Lagos

Protesters have taken to the streets of Abuja and Lagos despite repeated warnings from the police.

The demonstrations, organised by the Take It Back Movement, are underway in several parts of the country.

In Abuja, activist and movement leader Omoyele Sowore was joined by Deji Adeyanju, a human rights lawyer, as they led demonstrators in defiance of police efforts to disperse them.

In Lagos, a group of protesters was seen with placards in Ikeja, the state capital, continuing their march.

However, in Rivers State, protest efforts were short-lived. Organisers who had gathered at Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt were met with teargas from security operatives before the protest could gain momentum.

The Nigeria Police Force had earlier issued a strong statement condemning the protest’s timing, as it coincided with National Police Day, newly designated by the federal government to honour officers of the Force.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, said the protest “appears to be a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police and, by extension, the nation.”

In the statement, Adejobi noted: “The Nigeria Police Force has read in the news that a group called ‘Take it Back Movement’ is planning a protest across various states of the Federation, most especially the Federal Capital Territory, scheduled to hold on Monday 7th April, 2025, a day earmarked by the Federal Government as the National Police Day, to celebrate the resilience and dedication of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force.”

He continued, “While not against the exercise of citizens’ right to peaceful assembly and association in Nigeria as enshrined in the Constitution, the Nigeria Police Force is deeply concerned about the motive behind such protest scheduled on the same day the contributions of the Nigeria Police Force to national security is to be celebrated, putting into consideration that such glamorous event would bring together dignitaries from all spheres of life both internationally and within the country, including Foreign Inspectors-General of Police and Diplomats.”

Adejobi further stressed, “In line with best global practices adopted by nations in celebrating the achievements of its Police institution, the Nigerian Government has taken the bull by the horns by declaring every April 7 as National Police Day.

“The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is, however, questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt and unpatriotic act that is capable of rubbishing and maligning the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole.”

Lagos warns developers flouting waterfront setback regulations, marks buildings in Lekki

For allegedly flouting the Lagos State established waterfront setback regulations, several buildings in Lekki have been issued contravention and stop-work notices by the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development (MWID).

The notices followed a recent inspection of ongoing projects by the ministry’s monitoring team where it discovered that several structures in gated estates in Lekki were violating the rules.

The ministry said the Commissioner, Ekundayo Alebiosu, advised all stakeholders to strictly adhere to waterfront regulatory laws and ensure they obtained proper approvals before embarking on any development close to the state’s waterfronts.

He also warned that subsequent visits to these areas would result in a total clampdown, urging the violations to desist immediately or face the wrath of the law.

Lagos Police bust ‘Yahoo school’, arrest 10 suspects

The Lagos Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four internet fraud experts and six criminal trainees at an illegal cybercrime training facility, commonly referred to as a “Yahoo School,” in the Iju area of the State.

Lagos Police spokesman, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the police successfully dismantled the fraudulent training center.

“During the successful operations, police detectives arrested four Yahoo experts, Chibuike Ihejika, 23; Stanley Ihejika, 22; Obiora Oyediba, 26; and Emmanuel Oyedibe, 25, who were running the notorious school,” Hundeyin stated.

He further stated six individuals were undergoing cybercrime training at the facility.

The trainees include Okorie Henry, Otoh Chisom, 20; Okeke Kwufrochikwu, 26; Uchenna Obeji, 26; Minachi Udochukwu, 12; and Chinedu Ukachukwu, 23.

According to preliminary investigations, the principal suspects recruited their trainees from Anambra State, engaging them in internet fraud and other illicit activities.

The proceeds from these fraudulent operations were reportedly confiscated by the trainers.

“All the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for further discreet investigation and prosecution,” Hundeyin added.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the sponsors who financed the trainees’ enrollment in the school, as well as the owner of the facility where the illegal activities took place.

“The owner of the facility is hereby warned to turn himself in immediately at SCID, Panti, from wherever he is hiding. The Lagos State Police Command will ensure that all suspects are charged to court for prosecution upon the conclusion of the investigation,” Hundeyin stated.

One of the arrested individuals, 12-year-old Minachi Udochukwu, was reportedly subjected to physical abuse, allegedly inflicted by the principal suspect to force him into criminal activities.

The police confirmed that Udochukwu is receiving medical attention and remains in protective custody until his relatives are identified and reunited with him.

In response to the development, Lagos Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, commended the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and dedication.

He reassured Lagosians of the command’s commitment to combating all forms of crime, including cyber fraud.

The police urged parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their children to prevent them from falling into criminal activities.

He, however, called on members of the public who have fallen victim to the fraudulent activities of the criminal syndicate to come forward to the SCID, Yaba, with their complaints.

  • Lagos reaffirms legality of speed limit rules

Lagos reaffirms legality of speed limit rules

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has reaffirmed the legality of speed limit regulations and urged motorists to comply for the safety of all road users.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said this in a statement on Sunday by Mrs Bolanle Ogunlola, Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Transportation.

Osiyemi said the reaffirmation of the regulation’s legality was in response to public concerns regarding the enforcement of speed limits on selected roads across the state.

He referenced Section 28(2)(a) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (2018), which provides the legal basis for penalising motorists who exceed prescribed speed limits.

Further clarifying traffic sign regulations, Osiyemi stressed that the Ministry of Transportation is solely responsible for determining the size, colour, and type of traffic signs in Lagos.

He explained that this measure ensures standardisation and adherence to global best practices.

“I urge the public to stop spreading false information regarding the speed limit operation.

“I reiterate that speed limit cameras, installed after comprehensive studies on their necessity in certain areas, are currently operational only on Alapere Road and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way.

“Studies indicate the need for expansion to other areas, which will be implemented following further reviews,” he said.

Osiyemi reaffirmed that the primary purpose of installing these cameras is to ensure the safety of both commuters and motorists on the roads.

“For inquiries or clarifications, motorists and the public should visit the official Lagos State Ministry of Transportation website, verified social media handles, or contact relevant traffic authorities,” he advised.

  • From Lagos to Aso Rock: Tinubu’s transformation of Nigeria’s political landscape

From Lagos to Aso Rock: Tinubu’s transformation of Nigeria’s political landscape

    By Arabinrin Aderonke

For days, I have gathered my thoughts, searching for the right words to describe a man whose legacy speaks for itself. How do you define a leader whose influence has transformed governance in Nigeria? What can truly capture the greatness of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a visionary, a master strategist, a political leader whose impact is visible across Nigeria’s leadership and development?

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, at 73, your influence remains undeniable. You have consistently made bold decisions, unshaken by critics. You have introduced one of the biggest reforms in Nigeria’s history, driven by your strong belief that it will benefit all Nigerians.

Since assuming office, you have removed the fuel subsidy that had drained national resources for decades, a step many feared but one necessary for fiscal stability. You unified the foreign exchange market to promote transparency and attract investment. You initiated policies to revive local industries, boost production, and reduce over-reliance on imports and crude oil.

Your administration has made progress in infrastructure development with the push for better roads, railway expansion, and improved power generation. You have prioritized security by equipping security agencies and strengthening collaboration to combat terrorism and banditry. Boko Haram’s activities have reduced, because who dares when Asiwaju is in power? You have also empowered states through fiscal reforms, allowing them to generate more revenue and reduce dependence on the federal government.

Your ability to see solutions where others see only roadblocks has redefined governance and economic growth in Nigeria. What many thought was impossible, you turned it into reality, proving that true leadership is not about words but about vision and decisive action.

Your legacy is not just in the policies you have championed but in the leaders you have nurtured. From the North to the West, the East to the South, your fingerprints are evident in the corridors of power. If we were to gather a hundred (100) of Nigeria’s most influential figures today, ninety-nine percent would trace their growth and political success back to Jagaban.

At 73, you remain the oracle of Nigeria’s political evolution, the sage of our time, and the architect of modern governance. Today, I celebrate not just a man but an institution, a movement, a force that has redefined leadership in Nigeria.

Happy birthday, JAGABAN. May your days be long, and may your vision for a greater Nigeria continue to manifest.

Best wishes to the number one citizen of our nation. On your mandate, we stand.
