Police nab 23, rescue three in Lagos

At least 23 suspects have been arrested and over four victims rescued by operatives of the Lagos Police Command as crime prevention and control tactics intensify.

Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh made this known at a press conference yesterday, noting that  series of successful operations leading to multiple arrests for offences, including armed robbery, kidnapping, murder, child abuse, defilement, and cult-related violence have been executed.

The suspects arrested in the last two weeks included two Pakistani nationals alleged to be among a syndicate of seven aliens that lured their countryman to Lagos with a fake job offer only to kidnap him.

The 48-year-old victim, identified as Iftkhar, was allegedly invited by seven Pakistanis who claimed they had a job offer for him as a chef.

According to Jimoh, the victim was tied up, robbed of his $2,000, three ATM cards, his green card, driver’s licence, and NIN slip before demanding a N50 million ransom from his employer in Kano.

“His employer paid N1 million before alerting authorities. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring public safety and bringing criminals to justice.

Giving details of other cases, the police boss said the anti-Kidnapping Unit on March 7 rescued three kidnapped victims from a forest on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Ibeju-Lekki, adding that the victims were held captive but pressure from the tactical team forced the criminals to abandon them less than 24 hours after they were kidnapped.

  • Family protests against land grabbing in Lagos community

Family protests against land grabbing in Lagos community

The Igbaro Otesade Royal Family at Oko-Ado community, Eti Osa Local Government has protested against alleged annexation of their ancestral land and harassment by a construction company.

Speaking during the protest on Tuesday, the family’s spokesman, Hammed Ogunbo, said: ” Earlier this year (2025), a man by the name, Mr. Oyeleke Ajiboye, who is the owner of Efficacy Construction Company came in to the picture to grab virtually almost all the 5 acres of land that were originally owned by the Otesade Royal family, without any form of documentation, permission or approval from the Lagos State Government.

”He went ahead to maliciously demolish all the properties that were already built on the land by buyers. The original owners decided to meet with Mr. Ajiboye, (Efficacy) but were harassed by the uniformed men and area boys. Mr Ajiboye Oyeleke (Efficacy), who had also built a fence around the acres of land, remained adamant, and continued with his work on the said land even after he was asked to discontinue work by the Otesade Royal Family.

”We took the matter to the Lagos State House Of Assembly, Alausa Ikeja and met with Honorable Tobun who pleaded with us to be patient and confirmed to us that the Assembly was aware that the state government wanted to use the land and that an arrangement was being made to provide them with another acre of land as compensation.

Lawyer to the family,  Kingsley Okoro said that members of the family have been subjected to constant harassment by Ajiboye, urging the state government to intervene.

Responding on the telephone, Ajiboye dismissed the allegations as a tissue of lies.

He said: ” The land in question was acquired by the Lagos State Government and every land owner and property developer gets their title and other persons also acquired land from government at the place. I do not know the Otesade Family as the owner of the land; the government surveyor and New Town Development Authority(NTDA) gave us necessary approval and valid documents.

”They(Otesade Family) sold the land to unsuspecting persons even after they had been compensated by the state government over the acquisition of the land. The original owner of the land, which was then about 60 hectares, is the Otebiya Family. The Otebiya  Family has not challenged our ownership of the land, while a faction of the Otesade Family is doing all of these to blackmail us because they do not want to refund money to unsuspecting people they have sold the land to.

”They went to the State High Court in Epe in 2023 and brought down my company’s gate while serving us notice. I reported them to the Special Fraud Unit(SFU) Ikoyi and they were arrested. They went to another State High Court in Ajah where the court ruled that we should live peaceably. Otesade Family also held a meeting with the state government in Alausa,  Ikeja, and they were told in clear terms the land does not belong to them because their name is not in the official record as indigenous owner of the land. I have never harassed or intimidated any member of the Otesade Family because I am a peace loving person.

    Lagos, others tackle building collapse

The Lagos State government and a coalition of development partners, including the Policy Innovation Centre,  BiNTA Fellowship,  Nigerian Economic Summit Group and Integrity Organisation, have teamed up to explore behavioural insights as a solution to building collapse.

The Permanent Secretary,  Office of Urban Development, Engr. Olalekan Shodeinde, who spoke at a Workshop with the theme ’’Nudging Ethics: Behavioural Insights for a Better Built Environment” at the Colossus Hotel, Ikeja on Tuesday, said that by leveraging behavioral science, we could create environments that encouraged ethical choices, enhanced transparency, and strengthened accountability for the betterment of the society.

Noting the devastating consequences of unethical practices and poor compliance culture, he averred that the built environment would fare better with the identification and application of behavioural insights in addressing notable challenges, including building collapse.

“The built environment is not just about bricks and mortar; It is about people, principles, and policies that shaped cities and communities that we all live in today,” he said.

He emphasised that untoward consequences such as building collapse, loss of lives, and economic setbacks were preventable incidents, provided that people could change their mentality about physical planning compliance and building rights.

“The theme of this workshop speaks directly to a crucial aspect of governance and professional practices; how human behaviour influences compliance and decision making as well as the overall industry integrity. It is, therefore, commendable that the workshop, as a right step in the right direction, brings together policy experts, regulators, and built environment professionals to explore practical strategies to drive sustainable, safe, and resilient urban development in Lagos State,” he said.

We also appreciate the Ministry of Marine & Blue Economy, Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigeria Shippers Council, Nigeria Customs Service and other authorities who have joined hands with us to immediately commence dialogue with the Lagos State Government with a view to procuring lasting solution to our plight,” the statement read.
