‘Worm infection can hinder child’s education’

Worms, if left untreated can lead to malnourishment, and physical impairment that will compromise a child’s education, medical experts have warned.

In a proactive response to these risks, Lagos State has launched a mass school-based deworming campaign to dramatically reduce the burden of the infection.

From May 20th to 24th, the Lagos State Ministry of Health’s Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and a global NGO, Evidence Action will begin the distribution of Mebendazole tablets to over 1.4 million school-aged children enrolled in both private and public schools, including out-of-school children.

Speaking at the interactive stakeholders’ meeting with journalist, the NTD Coordinator, State Ministry of Health, Roseline Dawodu said the campaign would be held in ten high burden Local Government Areas across the state.

“The campaign will distribute Mebendazole tablets for preventative treatment of soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH), administered by over 3000 well-trained community health workers and teachers, to school aged children in 10 high burden Local Government Areas — Ajeromi/ifelodun, Amuwo Odofin, Apapa, Badagry, Epe, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Ojo and Shomolu in the state,” Dawodu said.

She added, “Over 48 million school age children in Nigeria require treatment for STH infection. These infections result from poor sanitation and hygiene conditions with the highest prevalence in school-age children. Left untreated, it can lead to anemia, malnourishment, and physical impairment that will compromise a child’s educational outcomes and income as an adult. Worm infections disproportionately affect the poor, who are less able to afford the costs of diagnosis and treatment. This exacerbates current inequality and impedes the nation’s progress toward achieving equitable access to health and education.”

Highlighting the core objectives of the event, the Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo stressed that the initiative is aimed at reducing the burden of parasitic worm infections among school-aged children.

“These infections can lead to malnutrition, impaired cognitive development, and reduced school attendance, adversely affecting the future of our children. Your role as media professionals is vital in raising awareness and ensuring that accurate information about this program reaches every corner of our state.

“We believe that the media is a powerful partner in health promotion and disease prevention. By fostering a collaborative relationship with you, we aim to secure your commitment to disseminate timely and precise information. This collaboration is essential in building public trust and encouraging community participation in the deworming program,” he said.

Senior Manager, Evidence Action, South West Zone, Maryann Edeh reinstates her committment in fighting for the health of the next generation.

“Since 2021, Evidence Action has been a steadfast partner, providing technical assistance to the Federal and Lagos State Governments in implementing school-based deworming Resulting in treatment being provided to over 1.2 million children in both public and private schools and communities annually. As a partner in the fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), Evidence Action’s Deworm the World program has supported government planning, data collection and reporting, community mobilization, monitoring, and supervision of the school deworming program for STH so treatment reaches as many children as possible.”

    •Scholar warns collectors against abuse

The Jaiz Charity and Development Foundation has disbursed N15 million to 165 indigents in Lagos.

Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Dr. Abdullahi Shuaib, said the beneficiaries cut across different segments including education, health, economic empowerment, and welfare, among others.

The event, held on Tuesday at Beleke Smith Memorial Mosque, Surulere, was the 9th edition of zakat disbursement by the foundation.

He lauded Zakat payers for their unwavering support and donations over the years while urging other wealthy individuals to toe the same line.

Dr Shuaib said: “At today’s event, no fewer than 165 indigents will be presented with cheques and tools worth N15 million for economic empowerment, health, livelihood, educational intervention, among others.

“The sum of N6.4 million was earmarked for the economic empowerment category comprising 32 beneficiaries. Similarly, while the sum of N4.5 million went for education support, N2.8 million was awarded for humanitarian support. 6 beneficiaries shared the sum of N1.7 million in the health category.

“We ask Allah to continue to bless the zakat payers’ wealth, families and enterprises as they continue to support the cause of Allah and humanity.”

Guest speaker, Sheikh Imran Abdulmajeed Eleha, cautioned beneficiaries of zakat disbursement against abusing the gesture by turning themselves into permanent recipients of zakat proceeds.

Sheikh Eleha, the Chief Imam of Daaru Na’im Central Mosque, said the purpose of zakat is to empower the less privileged who should utilise whatever they get judiciously.

He explained that zakat is one of the empowerment and anti-poverty strategies established by the Shari’a, thereby warning against abuse of the privilege by beneficiaries.

He commended the Jaiz Foundation and other Islamic organisations administrating the collection and disbursement of zakat in Nigeria, noting they are preserving the Shari’ah.

“The purpose of zakat is to empower the less privileged people. Therefore, once you are selected as a beneficiary, you are to use the money or zakat item judiciously. It is not ideal for people to abuse the zakat collection by turning themselves into permanent recipients. The best thing is for zakat beneficiaries to strive to reciprocate the gesture by paying back in the coming years.

“During the time of Umar Ibn Abdulazeez, one of the Caliphs of Islam, the Ummah disbursed zakat for two years, and people had become so empowered that in the following year (which is the third), nobody had cause to receive zakat.”

Sheikh Eleha noted the huge challenge of poverty and hunger bedeviling Nigerian society is due to our low application of zakat as a strategy to empower the less privileged people.

He said, “The Islamic community must have arrangements for empowering Muslims. The Shari’a has established many ways including sadaqah, zakat and others. It is because we do not follow these ways properly that we are still facing a huge challenge of hunger and poverty today.”

    • PTML donates block of classrooms, furniture to govt

The Lagos State Government has threatened to wield the big stick against any teacher or school that continues to utilise the extra one-hour after the official closing hour for extra lessons, for which they are paid by pupils.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun dropped the hint while inaugurating the block of classrooms and furniture at the Amuwo-Odofin Junior High School Complex, donated to the state by Grimaldi Group and the Ports &Terminal Multiservices Ltd.

He said the extra hour is meant for extra-curricular activities, and students must be encouraged to participate in some of these social activities and clubs such as the Red Cross, Red Crescent, Boys Scout, Boys/Girls Brigade, the STEM Club, Writing and Debate Club and many others, to ensure their rounded development.

He frowned at the practice where the first lesson in many public schools across the state are often “killed” by teachers, and threatened to deal decisively with any teacher caught for dereliction of duties.

“Do your job at the right time between 8am -2pm, leave the extra hour either for reading or extra-curricular activities. We would no longer condone using that time for fee-paying extra lesson in our schools. Education is free in Lagos State and nobody should be charging any fee for anything,” commissioner said.

Saying the projects has changed the face of Mile 2 Community and added value to education in the state, Alli-Balogun said the state would not only take ownership, but will maintain the facilities to ensure that it serves the purpose of learning and add value to community and the state.

Other infrastructure donated to the school by PTML include: an access road with drainage system, a borehole and installation of a water treatment plant at the Amuwo-Odofin Junior and Senior High Schools, a security gate and well-furnished gate house at Amuwo-Odofin Junior and Senior High School Complex, 1,000 dual desks and chairs as well as chairs and desks for staff rooms for all the six schools within the school complex, roof repair of Amuwo-Odofin Junior and Senior High School and Imoye High School and a 50 KVA transformer donated to Senior and Junior High School, Mile 2.

Addressing the school principal, the Commissioner said: “If you have shortage of teachers, kindly let us know, so that we can deploy more teachers to this school for it to serve the purpose for which it was built.”

He applauded the PTML for putting smiles on the face of the students and residents of the community as well as the government. Noting that the government cannot do everything, Alli-Balogun said partnerships like this ensures that companies give back to the state and the host communities, adding that investing in the future generation of Amuwo-Odofin and the state is an investment in the right direction.

The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Abayomi Abolaji threw his weight behind PTML for delivering on its CSR. He said the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration is determined to ensure that no child is left behind.

He disclosed that the government only last week paid the N1 billion for the students sitting for the WAEC Senior School Certificate Examinations, adding that this is in furtherance to its commitment to ensure that no student is left behind because of poverty.

The PTML Managing Director, Ascanio Russo, said PTML the Grimaldi Group’s commitment to Nigeria extends beyond physical infrastructure to the nurturing of young minds.

According to him; “though the company has been sponsoring several activities in the six schools within the school complex, it decided in 2021, to scale up its engagements by engaging in infrastructural development, starting with the construction of a 502-metre long and 7-metre wide interlocked access road within the school complex, which significantly improves accessibility for all.

“This was implemented by the construction of a drainage system which not only protects the facilities but also ensures the environmental sustainability of the area.”

Russo said the projects being handed over the state is a reminder of the power of partnership and how continued collaboration could help transform challenges into stepping stones for the development of future generations.

The Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Chairman Valentine Buraimoh said the school infrastructure donated by PTML is another evidence of what can happen if the private sector partner with the government. He said the government would continue to scout for willing partners who will be interested in helping the government advance the cause of development.

Chairman, Parent Forum of Amuwo-Odofin Junior High School, Alhaji Olabode Keshinro, said the school will make judicious use all that was donated by the PTML.

An SS 2 Student of Amuwo-Odofin Senior High School, Miss Azeezat Shittu, said the school upgrade has helped in improving the environment and has saved them from invasion from hoodlums and miscreants. She, however, called on PTML to further support the school complex by constructing a befitting food court that would ensure that their food vendors have a conducive and hygienic place to sell their wares.

Lagos State has so far gotten N3.911 billion as its share of the 13 per cent derivation fund since becoming an oil producing state in 2013, it was learnt yesterday. According to the government, production has been hampered due to challenges faced by the company managing its exploration.

Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye stated this at a ministerial press briefing to mark the first year of the second term in office of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Recall that Yinka Folawiyo Petroleum Company Limited (YFP), an indigenous firm and operator of the OML 113 offshore Lagos, began the production of crude oil from the field.

But the owners of the assets have been having issues among themselves. And as long as they cannot produce, there would be no money for Lagos.

Plans are also underway to develop 1 gigawatts (GW) grid scale solar energy as part of efforts to develop sustainable and renewable energy to galvanise the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM), the commissioner hinted.

This, Ogunleye said, will reduce carbon footprints, create jobs, stimulate economic growth and enhance energy security for generations to come.
