  • ‘PDP is no alternative to Lagos APC’

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the criticisms credited to the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Moshood Salvador, against the state government as a needless effort to resurrect a dead party through vain grandstanding.

APC noted that the PDP chairman was making empty and hollow promises, which he said marked the former ruling party’s “16 wasteful years in power” at the Federal level.

The ruling party said it did not consider the PDP a credible alternative, given its historic failure for 16 years in Nigeria.

It recalled that under the former ruling party, Nigeria became a cesspit for corruption, looting and impunity with “not even one worthwhile project to outlive those wasted years”.

In a statement in Lagos by its State Publicity Secretary, Joe Igbokwe, APC said the PDP was desperately trying to get a life from the debris where maladministration, corruption and impunity landed it by picking a wrong opponent in the Akinwunmi Ambode administration.

It said: “The PDP is latching to the review of Land Use Charge by the hyper-active Ambode administration to seek the revival of a party that is synonymous with corruption and incompetence in a Lagos that had been turned into a bursting centre of growth, progress and development in the last 16 years. This is a cheeky way that would not be allowed the surviving remnants of the PDP.

“Governor Ambode is setting the pace in result-oriented governance and quick and classy deliverance. In reviewing upwards the Land Use Charge and some other fees in Lagos, the governor was driven by the desire and resolve to continue the landmark and record-setting infrastructural development of Lagos as he has been doing since he came to power nearly three years ago.

“Lagos APC notes the complaints of well-meaning residents about these reviews, which made the governor to downwardly review the fees. We believe that in line with his people-oriented inclination, the governor is still open to further engagement on these fees, which are meant to solidify the position of Lagos as the nation’s masterpiece in infrastructural development and growth. There is no place for a PDP that has a notorious history of corruption and unproductivity to play its sly politics here.

“We see as a cheap and mischievous solicitation for support the pedestrian and outlandish remarks Lagos PDP chairman made on the tolling of Lekki-Epe Expressway. His childish claim that the money used in constructing the road had been realised is a petty and cheap politics to curry an unmerited sympathy he and his party do not merit. This lie and false claim also reeks with deliberate ignorance that flowers outside the technical and factual agreement on the concessioning of the road. We see his outburst as the mischievous trick to take advantage of Lagosians in his deliberate but futile effort to give life to a dead party. He has failed in this sly effort.

“Lagos APC laughs off the infantile boast of PDP touting itself as an alternative to the APC in Lagos; a lousy boast that had been consistently rejected by Lagosians…”

  • Lagos APC reps endorse Ambode for second term

Lagos APC reps endorse Ambode for second term

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House of Representatives from Lagos State yesterday endorsed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for second term.

The endorsement, according to him, was based on the massive infrastructural development and giant strides in all sectors and sections of the State.

They presented a letter to Ambode at Lagos House in Alausa, urging him to seek reelection in 2019.

Led by Majority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila, the APC Caucus said the decision to unanimously endorse the governor for second term was as a result of his brilliance performance in the last two and half years.

Speaking to Government House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with Ambode, Gbajabiamila said the lawmakers were indeed proud to associate with the achievements of the governor so far and would be supporting him all the way for another term in office.

The House Leader, who described the endorsement as history repeating itself as the Caucus was the first to endorse the governor for election in 2015, said it was instructive that there was not a single dissenting voice in the decision to support Ambode for re-election.

“This is a very unique occasion because we have said all we need to say behind closed doors but they are worth repeating.

“Ordinarily, some of us have been in this business for long time and when you have endorsements, there are always dissenting voices maybe one or two but among every single member, there was not one dissenting voice and I think that is very important.

“So, we are here today as stakeholders across all the Local Governments and federal constituencies of the State to present a very unique letter to our governor seeking for him to run again in 2019.

“We will give him unflinching support and have him re-elected overwhelmingly as governor in 2019,” Gbajabiamila said.

He urged the governor to see the endorsement as a call to do more for the people of the State come 2019.

Ambode thanked the federal legislators for the honour done to him, saying that the endorsement would spur him to do more for the people.

“I am greatly humbled to receive the APC Caucus in the House of Representatives from Lagos State. I am more delighted that this word of encouragement by way of this letter is to inspire me further to continue to render service to the good people of Lagos.

“I want to thank you so much for the honour you have done me. I receive it with all humility and I pray that God gives us the grace to actually honour all the letters and the words in this message,” the governor said.

  • Bring aggrieved party members under one roof, Lagos APC tells Tinubu

Bring aggrieved party members under one roof, Lagos APC tells Tinubu

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged a stalwart of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to bring aggrieved members across the country under one roof.

In a statement yesterday in Lagos by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Joe Igbokwe, the party noted that Asiwaju Tinubu is the right man to reconcile aggrieved members, given his deep knowledge of party politics, experience, goodwill and humongous capacity in politics.

The statement said: “We know our leader very well; we know what he is capable of doing. We know his deep background and we know he will not fail in this Herculean task, even at a time like this.

“Make no mistake about it: a lot of work needs to be done, knowing Nigeria’s diverse nature, cultures, religions, tribes or tongues. But we have no doubt in our minds that Asiwaju BAT we all know will not disappoint Nigerians.

“We, therefore, urge all APC leaders and followers across Nigeria to cooperate with Asiwaju and his team and render all the necessary support and encouragement to lead, consult, reconcile and restore confidence, even as they set the machinery in motion to do the needful.

“The committed spirit and the desire to set aside personal gains, personal differences and ambitions we saw among the legacy parties during the formative stages Of APC before 2015 elections must be revisited and reactivated if Asiwaju’s team must succeed.”

  • Ajomale: no automatic ticket in Lagos APC

Ajomale: no automatic ticket in Lagos APC

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Otunba Oladele Ajomale, spoke with Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU on the Ambode administration, the agitation for special status for Lagos and his projections for the 2019 elections.

What is your assessment of the Ambode administration in the last two and half years?

The public is in a better position to judge what the governor has done. What I say may be misconstrued. They will say I am singing his praise of one of the chieftains of my party. But, as far as I am concerned, I believe Ambode has done tremendously well within a short time. Looking at the financial situation, he has done well in all spheres. He has been able to pay salaries, unlike other state governors. He has been able to pay salaries fully. He has been able to pay pensions fully. Infrastructural development in Lagos in the last two years cannot be compared with any state. He is working on the basis of the development that others have already consolidated. So, he is building on that.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu started the work of development. And Babatunde Fashola also made his own impact in Lagos, in terms of physical development from day one when he took over the leadership of Lagos State. Ambode has done a fantastic job that a lot of people cannot believe. May be, it is because of his background; a chartered accountant, somebody who knows the management of resources, an economist. I think that is why he excels than any other governor. Since 1999, Lagos governors have been ahead. Ambode is on course. We now have standard bus stops all over Laos. Very son, the rail line will be completed and that will be another feat. He has lived up to expectation. The promises we made during the campaigns, people expected him to fulfill them. I think he has even exceeded the target. Honestly, I salute the governor of Lagos for the incredible job he has done. There is no government in any part of the federation that has done half of what he has done. People may say you have resources. People are paying tax. You are getting money from here and there. But, the management of that resources is a key issue. If someone has been diverting the money like the PDP, there will not be any development. The core issue is that the money is being used in the right way. We are feeling the development in all aspects; in health, infrastructure, education, in everything. We have to salute the governor for the courage and the vision he has for Lagos State.

How is your party monitoring his government?

We do that. We have a committee. When we see that something is wrong, we write a letter immediately to them so that they can correct it. We sometimes, invite the commissioners, who will willingly come to us to answer our call because they are members of the party anyway. We ask questions and give them a feedback on what the people expect of them. We are also like the door; we see the front and the back. We always communicate with them. We write reports and send to them. They send a report back. We talk about the way the market is being demolished. We discuss with the Ministry of Physical Planning. We ask them to give people sufficient time before the demolition so that they can prepare. Without doing that, they may lose faith in us. We don’t want anything to affect us during the election. I am satisfied that the people of Lagos State are satisfied with the activities of the government. He is fulfilling his campaign promises. So, he deserves our support.

How accountable are your elected state and federal lawmakers to the party?

The House of Representatives and Senate members are accountable. They come to Lagos to give the account of their stewardship. They hold town hall meetings to brief their constituents on their activities. All our senators have been giving accounts and they have feedback on their activities. They also organise empowerment programmes for their constituencies. All the three senators have done that last year. And the House of Representatives have also done that in their various constituencies. It is a feedback. Senator Oluremi did it more than five times last year. She has been reporting back to her people and empowering some people. The lawmakers answer questions from their constituents. They have been briefing us about what is going on in Abuja. The House of Assembly members also call meetings in their constituencies to brief them about their activities in the House, their resolutions, the bills that have been passed. They also do empowerment programmes.

Is the party reminding the federal lawmakers that they should continue their agitations for a special status for Lagos?

Yes. We have even held a special meeting on that. You will recall that Mrs. Tinubu has been raising the issue in the Senate. Most of us gave her support and encouraged her to go ahead, to represent the bill. The over-zealousness on the part of some of our senators killed the bill. She is representing it on the basis of dialogue. You have to talk to your colleagues and convince them, and whatever insult you get, you just go on because of what you want. But, the opinion of other senators matters. You will use a bit of diplomacy to get things done. We are on top of the situation. We have asked her to represent it. We are supporting her. Anybody in Lagos cannot oppose that laudable thing. The special status ought to have been granted long time ago. In other countries, that is what is done. They don’t abandon their former federal capital. Today, if you go to Abdijan, they have moved the capital to Yamasukoro. But, Abidjan still remains the economic nerve centre of Cote de Voir. Rio is still the most advantageous, and the tourist centre in Brazil. Countries don’t abandon their former federal capitals. But, in Nigeria, they carried their bags and baggage and leave the Lagos State government to manage the liabilities. That is why we want devolution of powers. You must return to the states the powers you took from them. The military took over power and impose the structure of the military. We are still using the same structure of the military. We want true federalism. Anybody who becomes the president will prefer the current structure to have absolute power, which is not supposed to be. And when you devolve power to the states, you don’t stay in Abuja and say those at the state cannot touch the federal roads. Why don’t you leave those roads to the states and allow the states to manage the roads that have been constructed?  You are building a road; you should concentrate on the link road between a state and the other. The Federal Government is neglecting federal roads in states. No responsible state government will allow its people to suffer because of the roads. Out of the meagre amount that they have, they have to use some money to repair the federal roads. If they have left it for them, people will know that whether they can maintain them or not, that is their business.

How do you view the agitation for an automatic second term ticket for your governor in some quarters?

Even, if you do more than what the governor has done, nothing is automatic. Let the people review you again on the basis of what you have done. You should not entertain fear about second term. What has to be done has to be done. If we don’t do it correctly now, some people will come tomorrow and bastardise it. We must uphold the institutions of democracy. There is no automatic second term. Once the people prefer you, you may even go unopposed. You may be there at the primary unopposed and nobody objects to it. But, the process must be followed.

How is the party pacifying aggrieved members who are unhappy about the alleged lapses in the selection processes for the local government elections?

Majority of them have been pacified. The major problem is that life has changed. A lot of people now take politics as a full time job. Today, it seems that politics is the only job available now. People have turned it into a do or die affair. They must be there at all cost. You find a chartered accountant wanting to be a councillor, a member of the House. Why? Can’t you use your profession for something better? If you become a councillorship aspirant and you don’t become a candidate, you are annoyed. You have been to the four walls of the university, you should be able to use your brain to work, to diversify and be successful in life. Politics is not the only thing you can do in life. If you come out of the university and you think the first thing you should do is fighting for an elective or appointive position, then, you are not doing yourself any good. Some people will even resign from their job to go and contest. When they fail, they are jobless. What happens? That’s why they create unnecessary problem for the party. The party cannot field everybody. By INEC or LASIEC law, only one person can represent a constituency. It cannot be two. So I appeal to our youths. There are many things outside for them to do, instead of killing themselves over politics and turning it into a do or die affair. You are lawyer. You have acquired certain knowledge. You can use that to better your life. Not everybody will have to be elected or appointed. Some people turn it into violence at the primary. If you are not selected, there is nothing you can do. The PDP caused it. In politics, they are able to steal money. I was in the civil service for 18 years. Honestly, apart from my salary, and possibly estacode, when I went to represent government, as a diplomat, I lived on my salary. We had no contract. We lived according to the amount of money we received as salary. Many of us who had retired and not ready to go into politics are surviving. I decided to resign then to start my legal practice before I joined politics by chance. I would have survived like my friends. You say you want to serve. You are not elected. You want to do it by force. Then, you are not serving. It is the motive behind it that you are looking at.

In the 2015 elections, your part lost some grounds in the House of Assembly and Representatives elections. What are you doing to regain the lost grounds?

We have already regained them. We thank God. The last local government election vindicated us. Some of those places won by the PDP were won because of money. Ifeanyi Ubah was responsible for distributing money and materials. Most of those areas are occupied by Ibos. But, they don’t usually disturb us during elections. You see them playing football during election. But, when you entice them with money, televisions, radios, fans from his warehouse in Amuwo Odofin, they were able to win those areas; Okota, Ajeromi, Ejigbo, Isolo, Osodi. That’s the circle. The PDP cannot play a clean game. The same thing they did at their national convention. They were distributing money openly and distributing papers to delegates. All the money they have stolen, they will continue to use it to create problem.

By the time you leave as the chairman of the party, what are the qualities you expect from your successor?

I think he should be prayerful and he should have a milk of human kindness. If you are prayerful and you have a milk of human kindness, then, half of the battle would have been won. You must have listening ears. Most of the time the members are outside there and I have to see them. I see not less than 35 people every day. At times, they are more than that. They come with all sorts of problems-lack of money, money to pay their landlords. You pity them. When they are going back, some of them will say they don’t even have money to transport themselves. If you have about N100,000, you should be able to distribute about N70,000 and keep N30,000. Most of the times, I go home with about N5,000. So, you must be able to accept them. If everybody rejects them, they should have the feeling that they have a father somewhere.

What are those problems you have in Lagos State which you want the Federal Government to assist the state in solving?

There are so many things. They have started, but I pray they complete it on time. This Apapa/Osodi Expressway. This is the hotbed of commerce in Lagos State. They can complete that. If they give us a special status and commensurate resources to maintain what they left behind, that is one thing. We should be considered as one of the six states of commerce. They are making a loyt of money from Lagos ports. There must be a certain amount that should be given to Lagos State. All our roads are destroyed. People are inconvenienced. In the United States, ports belong to local government. So, whatever they are making out of it, the local government gets its own portion. Not to talk of Benin Republic and Badagry route. They are making money from that too and Lagos is not getting a kobo. All these things are being operated in Lagos State. Rivers State can benefit from it. Warri can benefit from it. They have ports. But, the concentration is in Lagos; Tin Can Island and Apapa Wharff. The money coming from them does not come to Lagos. The trailers go through our roads. If they are getting oil from some states and they are getting 13 per cent derivation. Are they not deriving money from Lagos State? It is also derivation. If they pay the Federal Government, why don’t they pay Lagos? That is the question that deserves urgent answer. Lagos accommodates all ethnic groups. Lagos is where the commerce is. All the banks and institutions are here making money. So, I want to appeal to the Federal Government that these things have to be looked into.

  • Council polls: Union lauds Lagos APC

The Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN) Lagos State Council, an affiliate of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), has congratulated the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) , Asiwaju BolaTinubu and Governor Akinwunmi Ambode over the victory of the party in the local government elections.

Its Chairman, Comrade Chief Adetunji Oyeniyi said the landmark victory is a clear demonstration of the yearnings of Lagosians.

He said the desire for grassroot development prompted the people to turn out en-mass to cast their vote during the elections.

In a statement, the union leader said: ”Our great party’s overwhelming victory in the election is a demonstration of the great trust, quality leadership and confidence reposed in them by the people as the ruling party strive  to change the lives of an average Lagosians and  Nigerians as a whole, because in Lagos state we set the pace while others follow.”

Oyeniyi congratulated the contestants and appealed to them to join hands with those elected  to move the state and the party forward.

He pledged TOAN’s support to  the newly elected chairman and councilors, while promising that the associstion as a body shall contribute its quota wherever their assistance is required in all  jurisdiction in the state.

He urged Ambode and chairmen of the party not to abandon the mandate of the people that elected them “by consolidating on the laudable dividends, legacies as already recorded by the party so that our people would continue to enjoy the fruits of true democracy”.

  • Lagos APC kicks over NWC’s annulment of Banire’s suspension

Lagos APC kicks over NWC’s annulment of Banire’s suspension

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday faulted the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party over its annulment of the suspension of the APC National Legal Adviser, Dr. Muiz Banire.

The Mushin local chapter of the party has suspended him for what it called anti party activities.

The State Publicity Secretary, Mr Joe Igbokwe, described the position of the NWC as hasty and an assault on democracy for faulting the right of the local chapter of the APC to recall a party member at the national level.

He queried the authority of the  Acting National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, to cast aspersion over Banire’s suspension.

“Is Bolaji not aware that he is not yet a substantive National Publicity Secretary until otherwise stated in a Congress? Does it not amount to brigandage and playing to the gallery by naming himself the National Publicity Secretary when the position is still enmeshed in controversy?” he said.

“Is Bolaji not learning one or two lessons from the former National Assistant Publicity Secretary, Timi Frank, whose problem started from his local chapter? This emergency step into Banire’s matter cannotfly?”

He added: “Let it be made known that the National Executive Committee of our great Party acted in a haste to try to rescue the sagging and battered image of Banire who is having a running battle with his political base in Lagos.

“The Lagos Chapter of APC will support and encourage our patriotic and hardworking followers from Mushin LGA to exercise their fundamental human rights without let or hindrance.”

  • Lagos APC: victory at council poll well-deserved

    •Party thanks Lagosians

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described its overwhelming victory at the weekend’s local government polls in the Central of Excellence.

“It was payback time from the electorate to a party that has kept faith with its electoral promises since 1999”, the party said yesterday in statement by its Publicity Secretary, Joe Igbokwe.

The party lauded Lagosians to believing in the APC to move the state forward to loftier heights, assuring that the elected council officials would not disappoint them.

According to Igbokwe, the election of APC candidates on Saturday into the 20 local government areas and the 37 local council development areas would enable the party to replicate what Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has been doing at the grassroots.

The statement read: “The entire leadership of APC Lagos salutes Lagosians for the landslide victory recorded on Saturday in the just concluded local government elections which took place on Saturday, July 22, 2017.

“It is delighted to see members displaying love, commitment and loyalty to their party which led to resounding and unprecedented victory last Saturday.

“Our hardworking members defied heavy downpour to move out in large numbers to vote in all 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs in the Land of Aquatic Splendor and limitless opportunities. We salute them for this love for their own party, APC

“The leadership of the party is also happy that the resounding victory and the peaceful conduct of the electorates signify a big boost to His Excellency Governor Akinwunmi Ambode who has displayed courage and capacity in running government affairs in Lagos State.

“The outcome of this election shows a collective decision by Lagosians to continue to encourage and reassure Governor Ambode that they have not forgotten his good works and excellent performance in Lagos.”

The APC also lauded the State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), security agencies and agents of the various political parties for ensuring the peaceful conduct of the poll.

“We thank LASIEC, the security agencies, party agents, our foot soldiers and all those who worked with them to ensure that we had a smooth and seamless exercise. We cannot thank them enough,”the statement said.

  • Lagos APC assures aggrieved aspirants of justice

Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has assured aggrieved local government chairmanship aspirants that their complaints will be treated in line with the party’s constitution.

The Assistant Publicity Secretary, Mr Abiodun Salami, who yesterday addressed the aspirants and their supporters from Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government and Oriade Local Council Development Area (LCDA), said an appeal committee would look at their petitions.

He said: “I assure you that the committee headed by a former deputy governor in the state, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, is examining the petitions. Any aspirant not satisfied with the committee’s report has the right to take his or her case to the state executive of the party. Still, if you are not satisfied, you can go to court.

“Every aspirant has a right to fight his or her case to a logical conclusion in accordance with the laid down procedure and party guideline. The party will not compromise in handling complaints arising from primaries.”

The spokesman for the Ajeromi group, Mr Peter Aga, said they were protesting the imposition of Mr Fatai Ayoola as the chairmanship candidate in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government.

He said no primary election was held and no meeting was held where Ayoola emerged as a consensus candidate.

Aga said a particular section of the local government has been monopolising political offices in the last 40 years. He explained that the local government is made up of two communities, Ajegunle and Araromi.  “It is Araromi that has been producing local government chairmen; State and National Assembly members since the local government was created.”

Aga said for the sake of equity, fairness and justice, “there must be power shift this time. Ajegunle should be allowed to produce the chairman. There must be equitable distribution of political offices. The local government is not meant for a particular family”.

The youth leader of Oriade LCDA, Mr Omosona Olakunle, said: “We were shocked that the party leaders have imposed Mrs Ramota Akinola on us again.”

According to him, it was the same Akinola that was imposed on the party as the candidate for the House of Assembly election that made APC to lose the seat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

  • Lagos APC lauds Ambode on achievements

Lagos APC lauds Ambode on achievements

•Party: governor not a stranger in government

THE feats achieved in two years by the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration are proofs that the Lagos Governor is not a rookie in governance, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday.

According to the party, the governor has not only justified the mandate given to him by Lagosians but has raised the bar of development in the country.

In a statement by its spokesman Joe Igbokwe, the party said Ambode has joined his predecessors in changing the face of Lagos for the better in a recession.

The statement reads: “Governor Ambode and his hardworking team have visible impacts in every local government and LCDA in Lagos with landmark physical development that has endeared the leadership to the hearts of 25 million Lagosians.

“Lagosians have seen the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu critical link bridge at Mosan in Alimosho. They have seen the Ajah Roundabout connecting bridge. They have seen the Abule-Egba bridge statement. They have seen the Berger corridors intervention. Lagosians have seen critical interventions to reduce traffic gridlocks along busy roads in Lagos. Yet Lagosians have not forgotten the outstanding growth in Internally Generated Revenue in the last two years.

“In Lagos we know about the massive investment in security architecture and the huge results. We know about the investment in schools renovation, we know about the huge investment the Agric sector that produced the Lake Rice.

“What about the newly established Neighborhood Watch to complement the existing security Networks and continuous beautification projects around the metropolis?

“That these remarkable achievements are coming at a time when we are celebrating Lagos at 50 give us that the best of Lagos is yet to be, all things considered.

“We salute the sagacity and the courage of this governor. We rejoice with him for the successful celebration of the Lagos at 50. We celebrate his predecessors in the last 50 years. We celebrate all Lagosians who were part of this success story, we remember the fallen heroes of Lagos.

“We are looking forward to seeing Lagos becoming the third largest economy in Africa. We are waiting to see the Lagos budget running into trillions of naira in the years to come.

“We have no doubt in our minds that Lagos will remain the economic nerve centre, the economic hub, the centre of excellence, the Land of Aquatic Splendour, the land of limitless and endless opportunities, the glory of Nigeria, the home of thousands of medium and small scale enterprises and the home of thousands of big companies and multinationals.”

  • Lagos APC knocks Jonathan for defending ex-NSA Dasuki

Lagos APC knocks Jonathan for defending ex-NSA Dasuki

More knocks came for former President Goodluck Jonathan over his defence that his erstwhile National Security Adviser  (NSA) Col Sambo Dasuki couldn’t have stolen $2.1 billion funds.

The latest knock was from the local chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) which carpeted the former President of trying to cover what has been exposed for all to see.

The party wondered why such defence came from Dr. Jonathan at a time some of those partook in the funds have not owned up but refunding their shares to the federal purse.

It said the former President’s claim only confirmed that he knew how the funds approved to buy arms for troops fighting insurgents in the Northeast was diverted under his watch as the Commander-in-Chief.

In a statement by its spokesman Joe Igbokwe, the APC said there should be a limit to which a leader should rise in defence of his lieutenant with the mind-boggling revelations and overwhelming evidences that the arms purchase cash was diverted.

The party described as regrettable that the diversion of the security vote led to the loss of thousands of lives of both civilians and soldiers who were ill-equipped to face well-kitted Boko Haram insurgents.

It urged Jonathan to refrain from playing on the intelligence of Nigerians, whose future have been compromised by maladministration, betrayal of public thrust and corruption that characterised governance under him.

The statement reads: “Even as we concede that Jonathan is on a desperate bid to rehabilitate himself, we wouldn’t believe that a former president should be so contemptuous of the intelligence of Nigerians as to give the kind of defence he gave to Sambo Dasuki. We wonder what Jonathan makes of the horrid details that are emanating from the Dasukigate issue with shocking evidences, confessions and even refunds made by those that participated in that monumental corruption.”

“To claim that Dasuki and his partners did not steal the arms purchase fund reveals the inner beliefs of Jonathan. One would have expected Jonathan to be cautious in seeking to advance very childish and inadmissible exculpation of his subordinates for glaring acts of corruption. We had expected that Jonathan would have striven to water down the lowly impression held of him by Nigerians and the international community by not deciding to be so patronising to clear cases of corruption by his subordinates.

“By Jonathan’s defence of Sambo Dasuki, we believe time has come for the security agencies to pick up Jonathan to tell the nation all that he knows of the many cases of corruption that happened under him. We think that Jonathan knows more than he admits about the unseemly corruption that he presided over and should be brought in for questioning. It’s becoming indefensible for Jonathan to pretend he was innocent of the corrupt acts of his subordinates.

“While we condemn Jonathan’s cheeky defence of Dasuki, even in the face of monumental damning evidences, we want to state that the anti-corruption war is incomplete until Jonathan justifies his defence of corrupt subordinates.”
