    Lagos to ‘decentralize’ Christmas celebration

The Lagos State Government said on Friday this year’s celebration of Christmas would be decentralised and celebrated in all the local government councils in the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr. AbdulLateef Abdulhakeem disclosed this to journalists shortly after receiving an award from the Christian Conscience Group on behalf of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode as the best performing governor on Christian pilgrimage.

He said the decentralisation of the celebration would be in line with the all -inclusive governance mantra of the Ambode administration.

Abdulhakeem said: “The state government would ensure that the grassroots were involved in the Yuletide celebration.

“The governor has decided to ensure that the Christmas celebration is fully decentralised to the grassroots.

“This year, we are going to have the celebration in all the local government councils to ensure that all residents and churches come out to celebrate.”

He, however, urged residents to troop out enmasse for the celebration, saying it was a moment for all to give glory to God.

  • Lagos govt to support incubation hubs

Lagos State government has reiterated its commitment to creating an enabling environment that will  lead to the creation of new incubators in a bid to see more successful start-ups emerge.

Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mr. Tunde Durosinmi-Etti, made this known during a visit to the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST),  Lagos  Incubator and co-working space in Ikoyi.

MEST is a Pan-African training programme, seed fund, incubator and hub for technology entrepreneurs in Africa, providing critical skills training in software development, business and communications to local start-ups.

The Commissioner said the government expects tech business incubators to partner with the state government to  increase innovation capacity by bringing communities of entrepreneurs together to increase the flow of local knowledge and foster collaboration.

He  said  initiatives  such  as MEST Lagos Incubator  were vital as incubators get start-ups ready for funding.

According to him, incubators are  vital part of any effective innovation ecosystem, helping high-potential startups realise their economic potential.

During the visit, Durosinmi-Etti took time out to speak with MEST Lagos portfolio companies on what the ministry is doing to raise employment levels in the state.

He  spent time  listening to each MEST start up founder on  the  problems their businesses  were  trying to solve and offered  answers on what opportunities state has provided for  them to take advantage of.

One of the start-ups, DroQque, uses crisp candidate profiles, unassisted video interviews and artificial intelligence to help companies find talent faster.

DropQue is one of the nine companies that was recently sponsored by the Federal Government to showcase at GITEX in Dubai.

Also in the meeting was Oncenout, an online marketplace for pre-owned fashion items, including high street, premium and luxury brands.

Durosinmi-Etti was interested in learning more about how the work they were  doing  will boost  the  fashion industry.

Incidentally,  Oncenout Co-Founder Innocent Udeogu was last month named as one of the 12 ‘2017 Yunus & Youth Fellows’

The fellowship is awarded to people who are running enterprises, which, in addition to working towards a healthy bottom line, are addressing social issues around the globe.

Other start-ups present at the meeting were Amplify, a fintech start-up that helps Nigerian businesses more easily accept and manage online payments ; Curacel Health, a startup that delivers productivity tools and IT infrastructure to healthcare stakeholders across Africa; and Tress, a social community mobile app where black women and hair professionals can discover and share hairstyle inspiration, information and tips .

  • Lagos govt, private sector partner to rival Silicon Valley

Lagos govt, private sector partner to rival Silicon Valley

The Lagos State government is partnering with private sector organisations to transform the state into a leading innovation and technology hub in West Africa. The target is to produce world-changing entrepreneurs. One of the partners in this project is Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), a not-for-profit organisation, which invests in and trains African entrepreneurs. DANIEL ESSIET reports.

In the past five years, Lagos has become  one of the leading technology hubs in Africa. With a four-year Economic Development Strategy aimed at creating 100,000 new jobs, the government is working to make the state the investors’ destination and exciting headquarters for technology startups.

At the inception of his administration, Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi  Ambode pledged to make Lagos the most business-friendly state to step up the economic growth.  Ambode hit the ground running with the creation of Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment.

The Lagos Startup Week held at the weekend provided an opportunity to bring the growing entrepreneurial community in the state together under one banner and show people across the globe why Lagos is such a great place to start and grow a business. It was the third consecutive year that Lagos hosted the event.

Under the Ambode administration, startup hubs have emerged across Lagos.  Also, major multinationals are investing in startups with a view to creating mutually beneficial partnerships. Lagos is now the centre of tech entrepreneurship. Emerging startups are creating great momentum. The tech scene is at a real turning point.  A highly-skilled, workforce and a diaspora of techy Nigerians, combined with new government initiatives, are igniting renewed growth in the sector. The businesses are creating new technologies — from award-winning mobile apps to portals that are recognised across the globe.  Many startups are making their way to Lagos.

This has generated a new, positive narrative about Lagos’ entrepreneurial eco system internationally.  It is also drawing international business incubators into the state to establish their bases and support young entrepreneurs.  One of them is Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), a not-for-profit organisation that invests in and trains African Entrepreneurs, with the aim to create next tech entrepreneurs and provide jobs for the continent.

MEST provides funding, space and expertise. It powers a cluster of innovation networks for startups in Lagos.

Headquartered in Accra, Ghana, MEST has invested $20 million since opening its doors in 2008 to aspiring African entrepreneurs and has gone on to recruit talents from not only Ghana, but Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Cote D’ivoire.

It has a footprint in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. MEST has helped numerous entrepreneurs and start-ups to establish companies and start developing products that have gained national and international attention.

At its event at the weekend in Lagos, which was part of Lagos Startup Week, its Managing Director, Aaron Fu observed that as entrepreneurship is growing in Nigeria, the push for greater technological growth has also enticed multinational businesses, investors and institutions to establish a foothold in Lagos.

Some of these organisations, according to him, are interested in technological entrepreneurship.

He noted that the internet has become a catalyst for the growing movement of technology start-ups. This is helped by mobile innovation and the large part of the population using devices that allow users to access the Internet.

According to him, Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind because technology is driving growth across key industries, including advanced manufacturing, energy, ICT, financial and business services, and healthcare and life sciences.

Fu said it was important to empower younger generations to grow the economy into an international tech ecosystem if Nigeria was going to lead the new wave of technological transformation.

According to him, the tide of optimism triggered by the internet revolution has to translate into a tidal wave of talented and tech-savvy programmers, determined to put Nigeria and other key parts of Africa on the map as a technology hub.

MEST, according to him, is a pan-African technology and entrepreneurial training programme, seed fund and incubator, building world-class, globally successful tech companies.

He said the organisation received ‘Entrepreneurs in Training’ (EITs) from Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Zimbabwe.

The organisation, he added, gets thousands of applications yearly and the most promising candidates are hand-selected to form 60-person cohort brought to Accra for an intensive one-year training programme. Teams, he said, complete an intensive year-long programme, learning business, technology and communications, while forming teams, validating ideas and building companies. They pitch ideas three to four times throughout the year, and the final exam is to deliver an investment pitch.

Successful teams, according to him, receive capital to launch their businesses and enter the MEST incubator, where they will receive continued support and mentorship.

EITs, according to him, learn about software development and entrepreneurship from senior faculty.

The EITs also benefit from working with university graduates from around the world who serve as teaching fellows (TF).

Every year, the programme accepts the brightest and most driven entrepreneurs (with university degrees) from Ghana and Nigeria.

The MEST programme accepts trainees with diverse academic backgrounds including French, theater, computer science, engineering, business, and the social sciences.

He said the company takes pride in carefully selecting strategic partners who will help them better support its entrepreneurs in reaching their full potential.

The benefit of business incubators, according to him, is that they support start-ups and reduce their risk of failure, allowing bright ideas to flourish into a commercial reality that sustains high-value jobs.

To qualify, MEST General Manager Neku Atawodi-Edun said applicants must have a deep passion to start a software company, have three to five years entrepreneurial or corporate work experience and be able to commit to a year in Accra, Ghana participating in the MEST training programme.

Once enrolled, she said, EITs receive a full scholarship to an intensive programme that blends hands-on training in software development with business and communications education. During this period, she added that EITs are also challengedwith forming new business ideas based on the tech skills they’ve built, with the guidance of teaching fellows and staff.

Upon graduating from the MEST training programme, she said, EITs stand to receive funding from MEST ranging from $100,000 to $500,000to pursue their business.

Investment, according to her, hinges on EITs’ “final exam” (a business pitch to the board) and is based on specific key performance indicators (KPIs) as well as the commercial viability of the business idea.

Mrs  Atawodi-Edun  said the organisation was open to startups across the country, with a focus placed on mentoring and market access strategies.

She said MEST was recognised as an international leader in promoting entrepreneurial opportunities and economic development.

According to her, the organisation offers an unmatched opportunity for entrepreneurs by connecting them to capital, talent and mentorship.

What makes MEST unique, she explained, is the interaction of successful companies with the startup ecosystem to help entrepreneurs build companies that will transform their markets.

The robust level of participation from leading entrepreneurs in the programme, she added, ensures its success by providing a world-class incubation programme for high-potential start-ups.

Mrs Atawodi-Edun said the  emergence of  tech enterprise  has  created  high demand for developers as a result of the rise of the software-driven enterprise.

She added that the   emergence of coding as a highly valued skill is redefining business strategies and labour demands across the sector.

According to her, adoption of new technologies brings structural changes that increase the demand for certain skills that are not immediately available in the labour market, creating skills shortages even when unemployment is high.

She noted that the demand for coding specialists was increasing with international companies in the application development looking for people with such skills.

“The economic outlook is optimistic for tech startups in Nigeria, but human capital from this country still requires significant improvements. According to them, the main barrier for young Nigerians to start their own business is their lack of coding,” she said.

Former Pulse Nigeria Chief Executive Rich Tanksley said coding skills were highly required for all tech startups. If the incoming labour force lacks these skills, the ecosystem would suffer from labour shortages, making the country unsuitable for developing startups.

He added that sourcing the right talent for startups was a particular problem area.

He said : “They require candidates who are self-driven and are ready to take up new responsibilities every day and not just be a stickler for job descriptions.”

The founder, eWorker, a technology company that connects businesses with talented and vetted developers in Africa, Ike Okosa, said the challenge his organisation has is recruiting quality software developers in Nigeria. Finding qualified and experienced workers in programming, according to him, continues to be a challenge as growth outpaces the domestic supply of talent.

He said the company saw immense opportunities in the United States and Southeast Asian markets.

He explained that his organisation recruited developers on the basis of their coding abilities.

As a result of the accelerated pace of technological change, the demand for skilled digital talent has never been greater.  As technology continues to become more embedded in the nation’s daily lives, former Managing Director, Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) Mustafa Chike-Obi said digital literacy became increasingly critical.

He called on entrepreneurship organisations to bolster the pipeline of skilled talent by providing partnership towards establishing a curriculum that creates job-market ready graduates, and a climate that fosters entrepreneurship.

Obi added that the need for organisations to promote tech, entrepreneurship for the concept to begin to be embedded in the minds of young people as incubation became a new buzzword.

According to him, universities need to be encouraged to train techy and to replicate the incubation model.

Obi stressed the need for startup incubators to partner universities to transform their traditional computer programmes to ones that prepare students to compete in a globalised, knowledge-based, and innovative economy.

One-time Lagos State Commissioner for Finance Wale Edun said organisations, such as MEST, would provide the foundation to kick-start a resurgence of tech innovation.

Lagos disburses N742m pension rights for August

The Lagos State Government has disbursed N742 million pension payments for August.

A statement issued by the Head of the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), Mrs. Basirat Lawal, said on Monday the money was released for the payment of 255 retirees.

“Lagos cares and that is why it is committed by being up-to-date in pension payments. This administration advised the retirees not to live extravagantly.

“In two years, from August 2015 to August 2017, the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode through LASPEC has paid over N30 billion to retirees in form of accrued pension rights.

“The Accrued rights were paid into the Retired Savings Accounts (RSA) of 7,232 retirees.

“This is an achievement no other state has attained,” she said.

Lawal said the beneficiaries were also urged to counsel relatives and friends still in service to embrace the Additional Voluntary Contribution (AVC) into their RSA.

“The deduction field for AVC is now on the State Government’s Oracle HR application.

“The AVC will guarantee more comfortable life for retirees as the funds are invested and can be accessed immediately by a retiree on retirement.

“It can also be used to boost pension received in retirement,” she added.

FG hands over presidential lodge to Lagos

The Federal Government on Thursday formally handed over the Presidential Lodge, Marina, to Lagos State Government.

The Permanent Secretary, State House, Abuja, Mr. Jalal Arabi, led a federal government delegation to hand over the edifice built to commemorate the nation’s Independence in 1960.

Arabi, while signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), said the transfer of the property was done in the spirit of togetherness and interest of Nigeria.

He said: “History is being rewritten with this handing over. Although the state House Marina is being seeded to Lagos State government but we are not losing the fact that it has gone to the right hand.

“Most of us have been involved in keeping this place and we never wanted any distraction. There is difference between old age and statesmanship. I believe we are now in an era where we have a principal, who believes that your words should be your bonds.

“Every parent feels the pains when giving out their daughter in marriage. They would have felt that they made an investment on the daughter and held on to her, but the pleasant thing is that they will be more elated when they realize the husband is worthwhile. This is a clear analogy of how we felt when realised that the state House will be ceded to Lagos.”

Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, who received the document, said the development signposts an affirmation of the healthy inter-governmental relations between the federal and the state government.

He assured that the property would be well preserved, adding that the government will ensure its transformation without compromising its structural integrity and preserving its architectural finesse and beauty.

“The successful handover of this structure which represent one of the landmarks of the city of Lagos is an eloquent testimony to the new dawn of politics of tolerance and inclusiveness which the All Progressive Congress (APC) has brought to Nigerian landscape.

“We will ensure that the edifice becomes a tourist destination which residents of Lagos in particular and Nigerians in general would not only be proud of but which compares to similar ones in distant destination,” he said.

Other members of the Lagos State team that attended the event included the Commissioners for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr. Seye Oladejo; Housing, Prince Gbolahan Lawal; Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon Lola Akande; Special Adviser on Tourism and Culture, Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola; Special Adviser on Urban Development, Mrs. Yewande Onabule and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, Engr. Olujimi Hotonu.

Mercy Aigbe’s marriage saga: We’ll pursue case to logical conclusion -Lagos Govt

The Lagos State Government has secured a restraining order for Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe from any further abuse by her husband, Lanre Gentry.

Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Lola Akande, and Coordinator of Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, who spoke with our reporter on Wednesday said the order henceforth prevents Mr. Gentry from getting close to his wife until further notice, assuring that the government would pursue the case to a logical conclusion.

Akande who commended the courage of Aigbe for voicing out her ordeal, urged other women going through similar situation to come out and voice out their plight.

“I must commend the courage of mercy, because what she did is what other women who are victims of domestic violence out there need to do, they don’t need to hide it except they want to die there.”

The visibly angry commissioner said it was so disheartening to see the state Aigbe was when she came to her office to report the case, “she was coughing blood from her nose and mouth and she had injury on her face which the doctor said she must have an operation.

“I was so angry that I needED to see the face of the man that did this to her, and so we invited him and he came yesterday (Tuesday) to say his own side of the story to the official in charge of domestic violence but any man that can beat a woman to a pulp like that to the extent that she is still coughing blood one week after the incident needs to have his head examined.

“I asked him what if they do something like this to your sister or even to your child how will you feel? He said she offended him, but is that why he must kill her? Can’t they settle scores like adults?” She asked.

She said the government has currently involved their legal team adding than soon, a legal action will be taken regarding the case.

Vivour-Adeniyi, on his part said Mr. Gentry may be charged for domestic violence, adding that he is also expected to appear in court in two weeks’ time to give reasons why the restraining order should not be made perpetual.

The DSVRT Coordinator said the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode was committed to stemming the tide of domestic violence, regardless of who the victim or the offender is, saying that Mercy Aigbe is yet another victim which would be treated according to the law.

She said, “We are actually working on the case with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), we are handling both civil and criminal. The criminal aspect of the domestic violence has been reported to the DPO of Area F and we accompanied her to the station with a view to charging the criminal aspect to court. So that is being handled.

“The civil aspect which is to ensure that she is protected, that is where the restraining order comes in, which is provided by the Prevention Against Domestic Violence Law 2007. So, we approached the family court and we got a restraining order on her behalf, restraining Mr. Gentry from I think one mile from her.

She said the Police was handling the criminal aspect of the case. “The police are investigating and they are supposed to charge him to court for prosecution”.

She urged other victims suffering domestic violence from abusive partners to approach a court to seek a restraining order, noting that the State Government through the DSVRT in most cases intervenes on behalf of a victim even when such is reported by an anonymous person.

“Don’t forget that domestic violence is a crime and a crime is committed against the state. So, the state can come in, conduct investigation and can actually approach the family court for a restraining order. The law actually encourages busy body to act on behalf of victims of domestic violence, knowing well that most times victims of domestic violence don’t want to come forward, so peradventure of the law, the State has the ability to approach the family court on behalf of the victim, just to ensure that the victim is safe.

“The restraining order is not necessarily to criminalise or to punish, but to protect, because don’t forget that most times even when the victim leaves the abusive relationship, if she is walking on the street, she is still hovering round and checking if anybody is following her or stalking her and most times the perpetrator might have threatened to kill her, so the restraining order is to protect her, her surroundings, her children if any or her properties, that is the main aim of the restraining order, it is so powerful but people don’t know that they can literally walk into the court and get that restraining order,” Vivour-Adeniyi explained.

•‘Suspects aiding investigation into killers of LASTMA Commander’

The Lagos State Government yesterday allayed the fears of residents on a substance suspected to be Improvised Explosive Device (IED), which was allegedly dropped in a manhole in a street in Agege. It said that there was no cause for alarm.
The development forced residents to scamper for safety following the discovery and a bomb scare. But, rising from its monthly Security Council Meeting, chaired by Governor Akinwumi Ambode, the government urged the people to go about their normal businesses.
Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni, who briefed reporters at the end of the meeting alongside service commanders of security formations and top government functionaries, said security agencies responded swiftly to the development and found out that the substance was just pieces of thrash dropped in the manhole.
He said: “Early this morning, we were alerted to a situation where it was reported that some passersby dropped something on the manholes in one of the streets at Agege which led to a bomb scare.
“The security operatives quickly responded; the bomb disposal unit also went there; those manholes were checked and it was found out that it was just thrash that was thrown into those manholes.
“We also seized the opportunity to do what is called sweeping of the environment to reassure members of the public that security operatives in the State are more alive to their responsibilities, and that once we get information on a timely basis, response will also be done in a swift manner to ensure that nothing untoward happen in Lagos.”
He said the meeting, being the first for the year, was used to appraise the performance of security outfits in the State last year, and strategize for the New Year.
“We have done an appraisal of what happened last year in terms of our challenges and the modest achievements that were recorded last year and use that to prepare for the year and improve on what we have been doing and to position ourselves very well for the new challenges that could emerge in the year with the view to making the people of Lagos and their properties safer and more secured,” Owoseni said.
Assuring the people that security outfits and the State Government were more poised, repositioned and more willing to ensure smooth security operations in the state, the Commissioner urged residents not to hesitate to supply necessary security information as at when due.
Speaking on the arrest of two persons in connection with the gruesome murder of a Zonal Commander of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Surajudeen Olatunji Bakare in Apapa late last year, Owoseni said investigation into the case was still ongoing, but that those arrested would help in arresting others who were part of the mob action that led to the incident.
He said: “It is an ongoing investigation. You know there was a video recording which we have considered and it is based on some of the faces that we saw that we picked those people that were arrested.
“It was a mob action and we don’t want to rush to court without doing a good clinical finishing of forensic analysis of the faces to match them with what we have seen in the video and for those fellows that have been arrested to be able to say oh yes these are the other people that were there.
“As investigation is going on, we would be unveiling the development to the people of Lagos, but what we just want to do is to ensure that all such impunities are stopped in Lagos State.”
Besides, the CP recalled the arrest of some Boko Haram suspects in Lagos recently, saying that the collaborative effort and synergy that had always existed among security agencies in the State led to the arrests. He said henceforth, government and security agencies have resolved to further put their ears more on ground and open their eyes more widely to ensure that those elements were not allowed any space to operate in Lagos.

  • Why task force removes number-plates, by Lagos govt

The Lagos State Government yesterday defended the action of its men in removing the number-plates of erring motorist instead of clamping or towing the vehicles.

It also denied that officials of the Special Offences Task Force and Special Offences Tribunal (mobile court) were high-handed, describing the complainant against them on social media as hypocritical and manipulative.

In a statement jointly issued by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem and the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the government said it was within traffic law enforcers’ duty to identify offenders, book and by them according to the peculiarities of their offences.

It said the new method being adopted by the task force, particularly for illegal parking of vehicles or obstruction of traffic involves capturing the offence on video, removing the number-plates of the erring vehicles and putting a branded sticker on the windshield of the car. The sticker, the statement added, is to inform the erring motorists their offences and invite them for trail at the Special Offences Mobile Court which may sit at any proximate local government office or at the special task force office at Alausa in Ikeja.

The task force, it said, derives its mandate under the Lagos State Road Traffic Law of 2012 and the Special Offences Court established by the Special Offences Court Law Cap S8 Laws of Lagos State 2015.

“The technique that has been adopted by the task force is in line with international best practices which prefers issuance of tickets to erring offenders over clamp downs or towing of vehicles that do not only cost both the government and erring drivers money but also clogs public spaces where such vehicles would have been kept,” the statement said.

It said when the offender comes for trial, he is usually presented with a video evidence before he is charged by the magistrate. A fine or a community service is imposed if the offender pleads guilty, the commissioner said, adding that he chooses to enter a defence and has no counsel, he will be entitled to the free services of a lawyer from the Office of the Public Defender (OPD).

The essence of this exercise, the statement note, is not to engage in unwholesome revenue drive “as being alleged, but to check violations of the traffic laws. It said: “This is why community service is often preferred for the offenders so that they can become advocates of the laws which seek to bring sanity to Lagos State roads and instil a sense of responsibility in drivers and car owners, particularly the elites who think they are above the law.”

The statement warned that it is illegal to park on the kerb or walkways or outside the premises where a motorist came to transact business in a manner that either obstructs traffic or constricts public space.

The penalty, it said, is N20, 000 fine or a community service after a documentary evidence has been shown to the offender.

Mile 12 Clash: Lagos meets market, community leaders

The Lagos State Government Friday met with all the stakeholders from Mile 12 market, Agiliti community, Maidan and its environs aimed at finding a lasting solution to the violence that led to the closure of the Mile 12 market with a promise that a harmonious and effective solution would be put in place in the next few days.

Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, who presided over the meeting held at the State Secretariat, Alausa, said that all the leaders agreed on the need to cohabit in peace irrespective of their religion, culture or tribes.

Bello urged the leaders to go back and assure their people to maintain the peace, stating that the State Government would consider the inputs of all those present in arriving at a decision.

Addressing the leaders which included those of the various sections of the Mile 12 market, traditional rulers from Agiliti, Maidan, leaders of the transport unions, commercial motorcyclists, community development associations and leaders from the communities, Bello said leaders also agreed to go back to their communities and assure their people of government’s desire to ensure that lasting peace reigns in that community.

The SSG who said the issue of disagreement is not new in the area said what is uppermost is that everybody should see the next person as his brother, hence everyone at the meeting must leave with an open mind of cohabiting peacefully with their neighbours and avoid bloodletting.

He reiterated the directive of the State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode that the market remains closed and all trading activities be suspended to aid security agencies restore calm to the affected areas.

He gave an assurance to the market leaders from Mile 12 that the State Government is studying the situation and would address all the issues that have arisen decisively with a view to ensuring that it does not recur again.

Speaking at the meeting, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr I.O Edgal who stood in for the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni said the Police High Command has secured the Agiliti area and its environs and peace has now returned to the community.

He said the clash and resultant loss of lives was very unfortunate and that going by the level of destruction on ground, it was not commensurate with what was reported to have precipitated the clash.

Other participants at the meeting including the Iyaloja of Mile 12 market, Alhaja Iyabo Ahmed, Baale of Maidan, Chief Baale Ogunjobi, Baale of Agiliti, Chief Jimoh Onikosi, Serikin Nupe, Alhaji Jibril Magaji, Chairman, Shukura yam, Alhaji Mohammed Damdana, Chairman of CDA Central, Elder M.A Showande, were all resolute in appealing to the State Government to ensure that the issue is resolved on time so that they can go ahead with their various businesses.
