Lagos, Ogun join forces to combat open defecation along Lagos-Ibadan expressway

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) have launched a joint media campaign to eradicate open defecation along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The initiative, which targets the stretch of the highway from OPIC Plaza to Otedola Bridge, aims to prevent the spread of cholera and other communicable diseases while restoring the aesthetic appeal of the corridor.

The expressway is not only a key entry to the region but also serves as the gateway to Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling commercial hub, often referred to as the nation’s Centre of Excellence and Africa’s fourth-largest economy.

Leading the campaign, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, emphasised the critical importance of raising public awareness about the health hazards associated with open defecation.

“Cholera and other waterborne diseases pose significant risks, particularly during the rainy season when water contamination becomes more likely,” Dr. Ajayi stated.

To ensure the long-term success of the initiative, Dr. Ajayi revealed plans to involve key stakeholders in monitoring and enforcing the ban on open defecation.

He stressed the importance of interstate collaboration in tackling environmental challenges.

“This initiative sets a strong precedent for how we can work together to address common issues,” Dr. Kehinde remarked.

Dr. Kehinde further disclosed that Ogun State is partnering with international organizations to construct more public toilets across the state, moving toward the complete eradication of open defecation.

Commuters in for pains on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Commuters are in for stress on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway due to return of Julius Berger to fix expansion joints on the Long Bridge again.

The company reduced the carriage-way on the inbound lane from Ibadan for months to replace failing joints.

At the time of this report, the company had not done much. The bridge has 40  joints.

Many believe it would take more than a year to replace the joints at the rate work is going.

Rather than speed up work on the narrowed lane, the contractor moved to the outbound lane to create a gridlock for those driving out of Lagos.

Federal Controller of Works, Olukorede Kesha, announced plans to replace the joints.

The narrowing of inbound and outbound lanes has brought back pains that road users experienced for years while rehabilitation lasted.

Keisha, who said the repair would be done simultaneously on both bounds, underscored the importance of such a repair.

The joints are critical to structural integrity of the bridge. They have been repaired by the contractor more than three times in the last few years.

“As a result, traffic leaving and entering Lagos through the Long Bridge would be narrowed to two lanes…” she said.

Fxing the joints, which Keisha said would be in three weeks is at the kick-off stage.

The contractor did not mobilise to site until expiration of the time given by the controller.

Two months after its men were seen on site, nothing appreciable has been done.

A motorist, Ogundeji Kola, described the attitude of the Works Ministry and Julius Berger as unfortunate.

He recounted how he used to be trapped in traffic till as late as 11pm for over two years.

Ogundeji said it was unfortunate travellers were being forced to go through that again.

The Federal Road Safety Corps’ (FRSC) Public Education Officer, Florence Okpe, a Chief Route Commander, who disclosed this on behalf of the Ogun Sector Commander,  Anthony Uga, attributed the cause to dangerous driving on the part of one of the truckers who made a sudden U-turn without any indication to alert the truck coming from the rear.

“The injured victims were taken to Famobi Hospital Mowe while the corpses were deposited at Idera Hospital morgue, Sagamu,” she said.

  • FG shifts closure of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to September 2

Motorists and commuters on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway now have a respite after the Federal Government on Friday moved the partial closure of portions of the road by one month.

The partial closure will now take place on September 2 as against today, originally scheduled by  the construction company, Julius Berger, to work on the  1.4km stretch between Berger and Kara Market.

The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mr Adedamola Kuti, said yesterday that the  shift  followed complaints by Nigerians on the inconvenience they  stood to undergo during next week’s Eid El Kabir festival and the   annual convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

Kuti said it was also to allow for the effective traffic management plan.

  • Residents, others reject planned closure of Lagos-Ibadan expressway

Stakeholders and residents of communities around Berger area have called on the Federal Government to come to their aid and stop the contractor, Julius Berger, from going ahead with its plans to close a section of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, especially from Berger to the Ogun River beginning from Saturday.

The residents and other stakeholders claimed that the closure coming two days before the beginning of the 67th Annual Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), which is slated for August 5 -11, will compound the traffic jam in the area.

A resident of Aseese Village, Mr. Ayo Lawal, said the closure would further compound the crisis that people face on the corridor.

He said in the last six months, the residents have had no “respite as they daily face traffic congestion of the worst type”.

He said closing the road during the period of the largest convocation of Christian faithful at the Redeemed Camp, which will hold for one week, will throw traffic on the corridor into a serious crisis. The Interdenominational religious gathering, which takes place every August, attracts between five to 10 million worshippers from across the world.

The RCCG has presence in 191 countries of the world, all of which often send delegates to the convention every year.

A travel advice signed by Route Commander Florence Okpe, which was released on Monday, quoted the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander  Clement Oladele, as saying that the section of the road would be closed to traffic beginning from Saturday.

She, however, did not disclose the duration of the closure.

According to the statement, the travel advice was in line with Julius Berger’s notice of the “extension of the rehabilitation work on the expressway from around Berger area to Kara Bridge (otherwise known as Ogun River Bridge) around the Kara Cattle Market, a distance of 1.4 kilometres beginning from Saturday, August 3”.

The FRSC, therefore, advised motorists to plan their trips by allowing more time to their travel time in view of the construction, which would narrow the carriageway and impair traffic.

“The general public, especially motorists are advised to use alternative corridors like the Epe/Ajah  – Ijebu – Ode; Lagos – Ota – Itori – Abeokuta, and  Ikorodu – Sagamu to access Lagos.

When contacted, the Corps Commander in charge of Public Education of the Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) Commander Bisi Kazeem said the closure was at the instance of Julius Berger Nigeria.

Responding to The nation’s requests via a Short Message Service, SMS, Kazeem said the closure is to enable the contractor to meet its work schedule.

Kazeem added that the closure would be on for three months, terminating on October 30.

His SMS reads: “It (the closure) is in JBN’s idea in their work schedule. They would have started since, but we kept urging them to postpone in view of last RCCG’s event. They said they must start now to maximise the time before the rains intensify and to enable them to meet the 2021 delivery timeline. If the rains permit, they would end the diversion by October 31.”

  • Work to resume on Lagos bridges

WORK is to begin on the Alaka Bridge in Lagos, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Adedamola Kuti, has assured.

In an interview, Kuti said the materials for the replacement of its joints had arrived and were being cleared from the port.

He said:  “Important materials for the repairs of the expansion joints have arrived and we are at the point of clearing them at the Wharf. We would look at the very critical expansion joints and change them. The contractor has replaced two of the joints.”

Kuti said the materials were not available in the country hence, the delay in fixing the bad portions.

On the damaged Long Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, he said the joints had been repaired.

Kuti, however, said the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing were carrying out a “review” of the work done on the bridge to identify the new faults.

He added that he had directed the contractor Julius Berger to speed up the repairs, noting that progress was being made on the reconstruction/rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

He said: “Rain is slowing us down, but work is going on and we are making progress. As at the last report, section one which spans from Lagos to Sagamu Interchange is about 42 per cent completed.”

On the trailer park in Apapa, Kuti explained that trailers were already using the park and the contractor was completing some of its facilities.

He said: “We have finished one borehole and we are doing some electrical works also.”

He said the entire trailer park project has achieved 98 per cent completion while the shoreline protection of the park was 70 per cent completed.
