  • Eko Disco announces power outage in VI, Lekki, Ajah, Lagos Island

    The Eko Electricity Distribution (EKEDC) yesterday announced an impending power outage that would affect consumers in Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki, Ajah, Ibeju-Lekki and their environs.

    EKEDC General Manager, Corporate Communications Mr Godwin Idemudia, in a statement in Lagos, said the outage is to enable Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to carry out routine maintenance work on some its vital facilities servicing the area.

    According to the General Manager, the outage, which is scheduled to take place every Tuesday and Thursday for the next five weeks, will last for four hours on each day of the maintenance work.

    “In order to minimise the effect of the planned outage on the company’s customers, back-feeding arrangements have been put in place from Ijora Transmission station to Alagbon Transmission Station.

    “This will enable customers in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lagos Island to receive reasonable power supply.

    “We appeal to all residents that will be affected by the planned outage to please bear with the situation,” he said.

    Idemudia assured the consumers in the affected areas that the maintenance work would lead to better services to all customers.

  • Rotary Lagos Island marks World Polio day

    Members of Rotary Club Lagos Island have marked this year’s World Polio Day at Elegushi Market, Lekki.

    Members of the club marched round the market with a band and a big banner. They sang and danced as they moved round. Some of them came with their children and spouses. They also held a talk.

    The club’s President Sanjeev Tandon said the aim of the event was to, principally create awareness on the dangers posed by the disease, immunise children and ensure that the marketplaces were kept clean. He said the world over only three countries Pakistan, Afganistan and Nigeria (PAN) were still not polio-free. He said the club’s wish was to see to it that Nigeria was left off the hook in the next two years.

    Tandon said: ‘’We opened this camp at this market to  create awareness on polio. We walked around the market and gave some children vaccination. We are trying our best on polio eradication.’’

    An executive of the club Chief Glover said Rotary had taken it upon itself to stamp out polio from the country. ‘’That is why the district set up the camps. This is a disease that can be prevented with just two drops of the vaccine. Polio is caused by unhygienic conditions Children are not immune. It affects their spinal cords. But with good hygiene and clean environment, it can be eradicated. The market is the best place to tackle it.’’

  • Lagos Island Rotary offers free medicare

    In furtherance of Rotary International’s (RI’s) objective of providing medicare to families across continents, Rotary Club in District 9110 has offered free health to Nigerians.

    No fewer than 200 patients got free screening, treatment, and drugs at penultimate weekend at Glover Lifestyles’ Clinic in Victoria Island, Lagos where the two-day event held.

    The services involved HIV, diabetes, hypertension, tuberculosis, and polio immunisation.

    Others were deworming for children, malaria, cervical/breast/prostrate cancer, dental and eyes. The beneficiaries also received free mosquito nets.

    Glover Medical Lifestyles Clinic Chairman, Chief Anil Glover said over N2million was spent on the programme with 50 per cent of the money provided by his clinic, adding he was glad to host it.

    He urged Rotary to organise the camps regularly.

    He praised the District 9110 Governor (DG), Dr Wale Ogunbadejo for making a difference to lives of the people in Lagos Island. He however praised the district’s assistance to the club.

    His wife Arvinder, a medic, who was the Medical Coordinator of the programme, expressed happiness with the turnout.

    The club’s President Sajeev Tandon said this was the second edition of the Rotary Family Health Day, a medical programme of the club, which was inaugurated two years ago.

    He promised to execute more programmes that would touch the lives of the less-privileged. He ascribed the success of the event to the club’s awareness campaigns.

    Dr Sunit D. Roy,  the Vice President,  said the club cares for the good health of Nigerians and that the club’s members were ready to stand by this commitment at all times.

    The Secretary  Mamta Deb Roy also praised the turnout, especially it was more of the less privileged.

    Lagos begins demolition of 57 distressed buildings

    In a move to stem the tide of collapsed buildings in the state, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) Monday commenced the demolition of 57 distressed buildings across the metropolis.

    Reports had it that thirty-four of the buildings being demolished are on Lagos Island.

    Officials of LASBCA, escorted by armed policemen stormed the Island Tuesday morning to begin demolition of the affected buildings.

    General Manager, LASBCA, Engr. Lekan Shodeinde said the demolition was under the first phase of the demolition of distressed buildings approved by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

    Shodeinde said the buildings had been distressed overtime and that government had served owners of the structures notices.

    He said the exercise was being carried out to stem tides of collapsed buildings in the state, saying that government would not fold its arm and allow buildings to collapse indiscriminately across the metropolis.

    He disclosed that 13 buildings were billed for demolished on Monday adding that the exercise would last for two weeks.

    Shodeinde disclosed that the agency had identified 114 distressed buildings that needed to be demolished across the metropolis, adding that the others would be demolished during the second phase of the exercise.

    He stated that government would no longer wait for owners of distressed buildings to remove them on their own as experience had shown that such owners do not always remove such structures.

    Shodeinde explained that once a distressed building had been demolished by the government, the owner would be given 90 days to pay the demolition cost, failure for which government would seize the land.

    He said before a building would be demolished, the owner would be given ample time to remedy the situation, which included subjecting the property to integrity test.

    The LASBCA General Manager stated that if after the test had been carried out and the property was found to be unsafe, it would be demolished.

    The buildings being demolished ranged from two-storey to four-storey buildings.

  • Lagos CBD introduces corner shops on Lagos Island

    The Lagos State government has introduced 30 corner shops in Lagos Central Business District (CBD) on Lagos Island.

    They were donated by Mikano International Limited.

    Receiving the corner shops at Onikan Lagos,

    The Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business District, Mr. Agboola Dabiri, received the shops at Onikan.

    He hailed Mikano for the gesture, a part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.

    Dabiri said: “The Lagos State government has provided an alternative to selling on the streets and walkways. We will no longer tolerate continuous display of wares on streets and walkways.”

    Eko Disco announces five-day power outage in Lagos

    Electricity supply would be disrupted in many parts of Lagos this week as Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Monday announced five days power outage in the city.

    EKEDC spokesman, Godwin Idemudia, said in a statement that the outage would affect Ikoyi, Victoria Island and parts of Lagos Island from Wednesday to Sunday.

    Idemudia said that the outage was to enable maintenance crew from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) address technical and maintenance issues at Alagbon transmission station.

    “We want to inform our esteem customers that from Wednesday, May 24 to Sunday, May 28, there will be an outage within Ikoyi, Victoria Island and parts of Lagos Island.
    “This is to enable TCN maintenance crew resolve some technical issues within Alagbon transmission stations,’’ EKEDC said.
    The EKEDC spokesman said that the company highly regretted any inconveniences caused by the five-day outage.
    He promised that supply would be restored to the affected areas as soon as the maintenance was successfully completed.

  • Man arraigned for beating ex-wife to pulp

    A 42-year-old man, Semiu Abiodun, who allegedly beat his estranged wife to a pulp over her property, was on Tuesday brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Abiodun is being tried for a two-count charge of assault and breach of peace.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Philip Osijiale, the accused had on April 1 at Idumota on Lagos Island assaulted his wife, Oluwakemi, in her shop.

    “The accused went to his wife’s shop at Idumota to explain what happened to the jeep and truck she kept in his custody before their separation.

    “In the process, the accused assaulted the complainant by beating her black and blue and also damaged one of her eyes.”

    The prosecutor said the mother of five was the bread winner of the family, but was separated from the husband as a result of constant battering.

    He alleged that the accused took advantage of the complainant’s absence in the house to sell her property.

    “Abiodun sold his wife’s jeep and truck and when she asked him to return the vehicles and some other property in his custody, he turned violent.

    “It was other traders at the market that came to her rescue when they heard her crying for help.

    “The accused was arrested while the complainant was rushed to the hospital.

    “She is still receiving treatment in the hospital,” he told the court.

    The offences contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 166 stipulates three months imprisonment or N45, 000 fine or both, while Section 171 provides a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mr Omolaja Kazeem, granted the accused N20, 0a00 bails with two sureties in the like sum and adjourned the case until April 28 for trial.

     

  • Five arraigned for robbing Lagos residents with broken bottles

    Five artisans, who allegedly armed themselves with broken bottles to rob people in Lagos, were on Wednesday charged before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused are Sherif Emiloju, 23, a cobbler; Aanu Amos, 22, a mechanic; Farouq Atolagbe, 21, a printer; Anthony Oriade, 19, a tailor; and Adeyemi Ajibade, 29, a painter.

    They are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and robbery.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Ben Ekundayo told the court that accused committed the offences with others still at large on April 1 at about 11. 05 p.m. on Obadina Street, Lagos Island.

    He said the accused entered a compound on Obadina Street, where they met the complainant, Mr Olayinka Hounks and Mr Abass Bashorun in front of their apartments relaxing.

    “They threatened to stab them with broken bottles before robbing them of their phones and money.

    “While the accused were operating, a team of policemen on duty raided the area and arrested five of them while others escaped,’’ he said.

    Ekundayo said one of the phones and N50, 000 were recovered from the accused.

    The offences contravened Sections 295 (2), (a) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (as amended).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 295 stipulates a 21- year jail term for offenders.

    The Magistrate, Mr Ade Adefulire, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with one surety each in like sum.

    He said the sureties must have a minimum of N100, 000 in their bank accounts.

    The case was adjourned until May 25 for mention.

     

  • Lagos Island LG celebrates the aged

    Lagos Island Local Government took time to celebrate the aged in the community over the week, by providing free medical services, welfare packages, food and cash gift.

    The occasion, attended by dignitaries and royalties from Lagos State, among them, first lady of Lagos State Bolanle Ambode represented by Olusola Obasanya, Elegbe of Egbeland; Oba Ashimiyu Olorunfemi APC leaders; Tajudeen Olusi, Murphy Adetoro, Taiwo Oyemade and Olaide Atunwose, was attended by over 100 aged men and women at the Council Secretariat, ZAPASS Building, Lagos Island.

    Lagos Island sole administrator, Nasiru Akande Musa, in his speech, expresses his gratitude to the elderly ones for their support, love and encouragements to his administration. He assures them that his administration will be steadfast in its welfare activities for not only the aged but also for the youths and their children.

    “There are no criteria for the elderly ones that are here. Though we cannot satisfy the needs of everybody, we are doing our best to alleviate the challenges of most, if not all of our aged people in Lagos Island.”

    He also revealed: “This is not the only project we have for them; very soon we are going to launch a fumigation project which will take care of their health, we will fumigate their houses free of charge so as to ensure their safety. By September, we plan to provide free education for their young children, all they have to do is to enroll their children in a school in Lagos Island and we will take care of their fees, uniforms, bags, sandals and all necessary stationeries.”

    Representative of the first lady, Obasanya, hailed the LG for aligning with the state government policy of inclusion, integration and respectful treatment of the aged ones thereby giving them a sense of belonging.

     

  • Musa vows to clean up Lagos Island

    The Sole Administrator of the Lagos Island Local Government (LILG), Nasiru Musa – has vowed to completely clean up the nooks and crannies of the environment and make it one of the cleanest in the state and country, in addition to enforcing strict sanitation laws.

    Musa, in defiance of the heavy downpour- led the Council’s top, middle level and other members of staff, including the Head of Administration, Mrs. Olaide Atunrase, with officials of the State’s Ministry of the Environment in clearing gutters, drains, gullies and street corners in the Isale-Eko area especially the sprawling Dosunmu Market.

    At the market which was clearly one of the high density areas of dirt, the Sole Administrator was inundated with the lackadaisical attitude of the LAWMA private-partnership contractor in clearing the debris despite being paid frequently by the residents and market/ shop owners.

    Musa consequently directed the Head of Environment Department of the Council, Mrs Pedro, to -with immediate effect- report and demand a replacement of the Contractor by LAWMA while future occurrences of the lapses by individuals or groups will be met with the environmental by-law of the Council.

    “We are determined to make Lagos Island the cleanest environment in the state that we all will be proud of and nothing will be spared in our efforts at achieving this within the period of this administration in line with directives of State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, and we are marshalling all departments relevant to the environment to double their efforts on Thursdays and Saturdays for the clean up exercise.”
