Yuletide: Lagos Police deploy 5,000 traffic officers

To ensure hitch-free Christmas and New Year celebrations in Lagos, the state Police Command has deployed 5,000 traffic officers.

Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh announced this yesterday at a press conference on security arrangements for the season.

According to him, the command has intensified security across worship, recreational and public centres in the state to ensure safe usage for legitimate residents and visitors.

Noting the high patronage of beach resorts and islands during this period, the Police chief said a special marine squad created recently, had been on patrol in Lagos riverines in addition to marine command personnel.

The command, he said, has deployed 21 gunboats and special units for maritime patrol to secure waterways and the recently opened Coastal Highway.

Jimoh said Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers have been placed on red alert, warning that any officer found wanting would be sanctioned.

He said black spots and flashpoints had been raided to prevent criminal gangs from regrouping or planning attacks.

“We have deployed more detectives on the streets, especially at night, to protect residents and visitors. Our security network has been strengthened on land and waterways,” he said.

Jimoh assured residents that the police were in firm control of the security situation, urging those visiting Lagos for end-of-year activities to go about their business without fear, as adequate measures have been put in place to ensure a peaceful yuletide and beyond.

Also, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Police, Western Command, has rolled out security operations across major port corridors in Lagos to safeguard vessels, cargo and port infrastructure during the Yuletide.

Commissioner of Police, Ports Authority Police, Western Command, Oluwatoyin Agbaminoja, in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Isaac Hundeyin, said land and marine patrols had been reinforced to deter crime and guarantee uninterrupted maritime operations during the festive period.

Agbaminoja said the measures were designed to protect port users, maritime stakeholders and critical national assets as human and vehicular traffic peaks around the ports during the holidays.

The security deployment covers Apapa Port, Tin Can Island Port, Lagos Island Port, Lekki Deep Sea Port, Kirikiri Lighter Terminal, Ikorodu Lighter Terminal, as well as marine patrol routes extending up to 12 nautical miles within Lagos waters.

The commissioner explained that the strategy is aimed at ensuring seamless port activities despite the seasonal surge in cargo movement, port users and logistics traffic.

Agbaminoja said the Command has deepened collaboration with sister security agencies, terminal operators, shipping companies and Port Facility Security Officers (PFSOs) to enable swift, real-time response to emerging threats.

She added that more personnel had been deployed to congestion-prone areas, while intelligence gathering and surveillance had been heightened to proactively identify and neutralise risks to port safety and national economic assets.

Agbaminoja urged port users and stakeholders to remain security-conscious, comply with laid-down guidelines and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest Port Police Division or Marine Unit.

“The Command wishes to reassure port users, maritime stakeholders and the public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining safety, security, and order across all port corridors during the Yuletide period. The command also remains committed to ensuring that activities within the nation’s maritime domain continue smoothly and securely throughout the season and beyond,” the commissioner stated.

Lagos police restore calm after hoodlums clash in Balogun market

The Lagos State Police Command says normalcy has been restored at Balogun Market, Lagos Island, after a violent fight between hoodlums caused panic in the busy commercial area.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesman, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, dismissed reports of a tribal clash, clarifying that the incident was a confrontation between miscreants.

According to the police, around 11 a.m., one Ebuka Adindu from Abia State stabbed Sodiq Ibrahim from Kogi State to death during a fight.

Adindu also stabbed himself in the shoulder and lost consciousness. He has been arrested and is currently under police guard at the hospital.

The Command confirmed there were no injuries to traders, no destruction of property, and no loss of innocent lives inside the market.

“The incident is not a tribal clash but purely between miscreants and hoodlums around Balogun Market. Normalcy has been restored,” Hundeyin said.

He added that Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) of Lion Building and Ebute-Ero divisions were on ground with their men, maintaining order.

Meanwhile, the Command also confirmed it had restored normalcy in Owode-Onirin after a deadly clash between traders and land grabbers, which left three persons dead and a police inspector critically injured.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, personally led a combined detachment of operatives from the Operations Department, Mobile Police Force, Rapid Response Squad, Tactical Squads, and the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to the scene. Roads earlier blocked by the unrest were reopened and business activities resumed.

This was contained in a statement Friday evening signed by the spokesman for the command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin on behalf of the Commissioner (CP) Olohundare Jimoh.

According to the statement, the suspects were involved in the recruitment and movement of young Nigrerians to Ghana for prostitution.

The suspects, the police said, were apprehended on August 13, by operatives of Ilemba Hausa Division, after one Mustapha Abubakar was intercepted.

Abubakar, suspected to be an okada operator and recruiter was found with a 15-year-old female victim who was on the verge of being trafficked to Ghana for prostitution.

“The case was, thereafter, transferred to the Special Squad I of the Command which, supported by actionable intelligence, launched a swift and coordinated manhunt that led to the arrest of Charles Chima, 54, at Amuwo Odofin, Emmanuel Nwaka, 36, along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, and Princess John , 21, at Ojota.

“Investigation revealed that all arrested suspects are part of the criminal network that recruits and traffick young women from Nigeria to Ghana.

“Further investigations led to the safe rescue of additional ten victims aged between 21 and 29.

“All rescued persons are now in protective care, receiving the necessary support and assistance, while arrangements are being made to reunite them with their families.

“The suspects remain in custody and are actively assisting investigators in unravelling the full extent of the network.

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, commends the operatives for their swift and professional action.

Lagos police sustain crackdown on criminals

Lagos State Police Command has arrested several suspects and recovered a cache of weapons, as well as assorted vehicles from suspected criminals.

The police also dismantled high-level criminal syndicates responsible for stealing exotic vehicles within and outside the country with some of the cars recovered.

Top among the vehicles recovered was a vintage sports car valued at about $225,000 which was said to have been stolen abroad and shipped to Nigeria.

The Commissioner of Police (CP), Olohundare Jimoh, while displaying some of these vehicles to reporters yesterday, said investigation was ongoing and urged persons whose cars were snatched or stolen to come to the command to check.

For the sports car, CP Jimoh said there was another of the vehicle being driven in Lagos by a celebrity that was also subject of investigation.

“This vehicle was stolen abroad and we recovered it here. In fact, there is a red one of the same vehicle which a celebrity has been driving. We encourage that celebrity to come forward to the police because these vehicles are under investigation.

“Among these 37 vehicles here were those snatched from other states and were to be moved to another country through Lagos before they were flagged by our operatives. We also have about 70 others not here due to space. Some of the vehicles were also recovered from fraudsters and other suspects. Some of them are subject of investigation by different police units and departments but we encourage people whose vehicles were stolen to come to the command to check and with their evidence,” he said.

The police chief said the command under his watch has been able to reduce criminality to the nearest minimum, adding that cultism and other violent crimes were no longer as rampant as they used to be.

He said 23 suspected cultists were arrested some days ago, adding that dangerous weapons were recovered from them.

Displaying various recovered arms and ammunition, toy pistols, CP Jimoh emphasized that the use of such items to instill fear or rob citizens constituted a serious criminal offense punishable by law.

CP Jimoh used the opportunity to appeal for a review of the ban on parade of suspects, noting that such parades were necessary as they afford other victims of crime to be able to identify the perpetrator and come forward to build a case against such suspects.

“The police are a law abiding institution and we will continue to respect and uphold the law until such a time it is reconsidered and set aside. For now, all we can do is appeal and you, members of the press can also add your voices to the call for review instead of directing the question to the police,” he added.

CP Jimoh commended his officers and men for the feat recorded, noting that the formation of the Eko Strike Force has also helped in containing cultism and other crimes in the state.

“As I speak to you, Lagos remains safe and secure. We have drastically reduced violent crimes, and no incident of armed robbery has been recorded under my watch. We are fully prepared to respond to threats and ensure that criminals either flee the state or face the full weight of the law,” CP Jimoh said.

  • Lagos Police denies unlawful detention of suspected cultist, murderer

Lagos Police denies unlawful detention of suspected cultist, murderer

The Lagos State Police Command has refuted allegations it has kept a suspect in custody for six weeks without a court order.

The command also denied allegations of rights abuses and torture of suspects made against it by a lawyer, Bayo Akinlade.

The lawyer, in a post on social media, accused the Tactical Squad of the command at Second Rainbow on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway of unlawfully detaining a suspect, Nosiru Owolabi, for six weeks, without a court warrant and denying the suspect access to his family and counsel.

Akinlade in the post alleged that the tactical squad was oppressing citizens, adding that they kept their victims in detention for as long as it pleased the commander. But, in a swift rebuttal, the police command explained that Owolabi who was arrested on January 25, for alleged multiple armed robberies, kidnappings and murder, was being detained by a valid court order.

Spokesman for the command, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin in a statement said the suspect had been on the wanted list of the police.

“The suspect was arrested because of his involvement in several armed robberies, murders, violence and cultism related cases in some areas in Lagos.

“The suspect has been on the police wanted list for various capital and serious offenses, such as armed robberies, multiple kidnappings and violent crimes. These raised significant public safety and security concerns, and fear.

“Following the execution of a valid search warrant after his arrest, two firearms were recovered from his possession.

“It’s pertinent to point out that the detention of the suspect was carried out in compliance with a valid court order, which granted the police the authority to detain him for an extended period. The primary purpose of this detention was to facilitate a thorough and discreet investigation in the case, arrest more suspects linked to the crimes committed by the principal suspect with his cohorts and syndicates. And also recover additional firearms and weapons the suspect confessed are in his possession.

“These weapons if not recovered are certainly a great danger to all law abiding citizens and could pose a serious threat to public safety and security.

“It’s incumbent on us to educate you that detention is not a punishment, but criminal legal procedures to ensure that whoever is accused of any offense have their day in court,” said the command.

Continuing, the police said Owolabi’s detention was not done arbitrarily and was aimed at safeguarding law, order and public safety, as well as the need to recover additional dangerous items in his possession.

It said Owolabi’s rights have been respected throughout his detention, adding that his wife paid him regular visits.

“His wife visited him regularly, and appropriate measures were taken to know that his well-being is properly taken care of.

“It is also important to state that the community he resides in has expressed strong support for the arrest by the police because of them recognizing the importance of removing a dangerous individual from the streets.

“Members of the public are hereby encouraged to promptly engage with the Police Public Relations Officer or the Complaint Response Unit whenever they have complaints against police action and inaction to ensure quick resolution of these complaints.

“Permit me to assure the public that the Lagos State Police Command under CP Olohundare Jimoh is committed to upholding the law, while ensuring that the rights of all individuals, including those in custody, are respected and upheld,” said Hundeyin.
