    Lagos Police detonates improvised explosive device in Ikeja

    The Lagos State Police Command yesterday detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) left by an unknown individual in Ikeja. The device was reportedly dropped off by a man driving a white Toyota car around 3:55 p.m.

    In a statement, the command said: “At about 1600hrs, a police officer reported at EOD-CBRN Base at Ikeja, said while he was on his way to Ikeja, he sighted an unregistered white Corolla car parked on the main road close to the gate of PMF 23 Barracks, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja. A young man alighted from the car, carefully dropped a bag by the side of the Nigeria Customs Service Federal Operations Unit fence, then returned to the vehicle and zoomed off.”

    Upon receiving the report, a team from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal- Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit was promptly dispatched to the scene. They identified the object as an IED, cordoned off the area, and rendered the device safe following standard operating procedures.

    The IED was subsequently taken to a safe distance for detonation. Residual fragments of the device have been collected for further analysis and investigation.

    Rapid Response Squad (RRS) led by its Commander, CSP Shola Jejeloye and Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) captained by its Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele have carried out a joint visibility patrol and fitness walk for its personnel in readiness for emergencies in the state.

    Areas covered by the teams include: Ikeja, Old Toll Gate, Oshodi, Ojota, Iyana Oworo, Third Mainland Bridge, VI, Ikoyi, Lekki, Lagos Island, Apongbon.

    Recall The Nation reported that some Nigerians are planning to protest against economic hardship in the country.

    The demonstration, which is gaining traction on social media, has been scheduled to be held across all states of the Federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, starting from August 1.

    Operatives of Lagos Police Command have arrested a suspected armed robber in Idimu area of the state. The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest in a post he shared on his X handle @benHundeyin on Sunday.

    He said the suspect was arrested yesterday during a patrol of the axis(Idimu)

    “Today, at 3: 00 a.m. at Pipeline Street, Idimu, the suspect was arrested by officers from Idimu Division.

    “When searched, one locally made pistol and one live cartridge were recovered,” the spokesperson said.

    JUST IN: Police arrest two over robbery in Lagos

    In a swift response to a late-night robbery, police apprehended two suspects in the Imude area of Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos state.

    The incident occurred around 11 p.m. when 30-year-old Musa Ibrahim and 22-year-old Ibrahim Danjuma allegedly robbed a woman in her shop.

    Alerted by an emergency call, a patrol team from the Ilemba Hausa Division was dispatched to the scene.

    With the assistance of vigilant community members, the suspects were quickly apprehended, and a locally-made firearm was recovered from them.

    Residents of the area have expressed gratitude to the police and community members for their prompt action, highlighting the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement.

    Reacting to the arrest, the state police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundayin, stated: “Security is everyone’s business. This successful apprehension was made possible through the combined efforts of the community and the police force. The suspects are currently in custody, and further investigations are underway.”

    The Lagos State Police Command has rescued the three Fouani brothers, who were abducted last week while returning home from their factory by boat.

    The brothers, Abbas Fouani, Youssef Fouani, and Amtal Fouani, were kidnapped about 6pm on June 14.

     The Police authorities said the brothers, along with their boat driver and his assistant, were freed in Orugbo Iddo.

     The operation was confirmed by the Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, who said the brothers were rescued late last night. “Our Marine Police, with the support of the Nigerian Navy, brought them to shore. Thereafter, our tactical team in the area took them home to Banana Island in the early hours of today,” he added.

     The rescued individuals, including the three Lebanese brothers, the boat captain, and his assistant, have since been returned to their residence.

    Meanwhile, the Police arrested a 26-year-old man, Ikechukwu Michael, in connection with the possession of illegal drugs. A team of detectives from the Ojo Division, acting on a tip-off, on Monday apprehended the suspect.

     Michael was found with 407 wraps of a substance believed to be Arezonna. The police recovered the exhibits and brought them to the station for further analysis.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundayin, said: “The suspect is undergoing preliminary investigation. We are committed to eradicating drug-related activities in Lagos State and will ensure that those involved face the full wrath of the law.

    “The arrest underscores ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Police Command to combat the proliferation of illegal drugs in the region. Further updates on the investigation are expected as authorities continue to delve into the case.’’

    Police raid criminal hideouts, arrest 40 suspects in Lagos

    Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Police Command in Lagos State have raided hideouts of criminals in Yaba area and arrested 40 suspects.

    Mr Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman of the command, confirmed the arrest on a post he shared on his verified X handle @benHundeyin, yesterday.

    The spokesman said the operatives arrested the suspects at 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

    “RRS on Tuesday night arrested 40 suspected criminals at different black spots within Yaba.

    “The 40 suspects were arrested when the operatives of RRS, working with members of Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency, swooped on the areas.

    “The raid was sequel to complaints from members of the public about the activities of criminals who waylay passersby and rob them of their belongings.”

    He said that RRS Commander, Mr Olayinka Egbeyemi, following the approval of the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, had directed the operatives to commence discreet surveillance of the area before the arrest.

    Police arrest three wanted suspects in Lagos

    The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three wanted suspected robbers for allegedly robbing a victim of his cash and valuables estimated at about N4 million in 2023.

    The spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, who  confirmed the arrest yesterday, said the victim came to the Ikorodu Police Division on October. 10, 2023, to report that he was robbed at Igbolomu area of Ikorodu, and the assailants collected his gold chain, pendant and hand chain, which was valued at N3.4 million.

    Hundeyin said the suspects also robbed the complainant of his mobile phone, valued at N280,000, two scalers valued at N24,000, a power bank and $200 cash.

    According to him, the police tracked and arrested two of the suspects, ages 28 and 38, at Igbolomu area of Ikorodu in March.

    “Based on their confessions, about 1am on Monday, another suspect, 32, who claimed to be a photographer/director of production of a newspaper organisation, was also arrested.

    “He confessed to have participated in the robbery, and that they sold the gold chain for N2.2 million and he got N400,000 as his share. The suspect also said that the gun used is with one Alhaji, who is presently in prison over another offence,”Hundeyi Hundeyin said.

    Police share water, snacks to protesters in Lagos

    Protesters in Lagos were on Tuesday, February 27, provided with biscuits and water as they assembled to express their dissatisfaction with the prevailing hunger and hardship in the country, as well as alleged federal government’s failure to fulfill agreements made with labour last October 2, following the removal of fuel subsidy.

    The snacks, which were shared to the protesting crowd by police operatives escorting them, were said to have been provided by the Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, in solidarity with the protesters.

    The Nation reports that the police boss and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held a meeting where parties committed to ensuring a peaceful and harassment free protest.

    The commissioner had warned security operatives deployed for the exercise to ensure that they respected the rights of the protesters and at the same time, should be firm in the discharge of their duties.

    As the protesters marched to Alausa, policemen who in a van drove round, sharing water and biscuits to them.

    Pleased by the act of kindness, the cheering crowd chanted “up Nigeria Police”.

    The Nation reports that the placard bearing protesters converged on Ikeja Underbridge as early as 7am singing and dancing as they marched across the streets.

    Some of the inscriptions on their placards read: “End Hunger and Poverty Now! Stop the Looting! Tax the Rich, Subsidise the Poor…”

    The protest is expected to continue on Wednesday, February 28.

    • One-chance syndicate smashed

    Operatives of the Lagos Police Command have arrested four suspected cultists and armed robbers said to have terrorised the Ijora Badia and Abule-Ado areas of the state.

    The suspects, Mayowa Shitu, 29, Jamie Alarape, 26, Bashiru Munsuru, 29, and Lekon Akintunde, 29, were apprehended on February 16, around 8am by officers attacjed ti the command’s tactical team.

    It said two locally made pistols, three life cartridges, eight phones, one iron cutter and charms were recovered from the suspects.

    Police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest of the suspects, adding that they would be charged to court.

    He said operatives of the command also smashed a suspected one-chance syndicate at Alausa on Saturday.

    Hundeyin said the operatives acted on an earlier complaint from a victim about the activities of the criminals who usually packed around Olusosun in Ojota.

    He said they packed there under the pretense of taking passengers to their destinations only to move them to unknown destinations where the victims are fleeced of their valuables.

    “The surveillance team of Olusosun outpost, under the division, mobilised around the area and arrested one Okoro, 45, and one Patience, 42.

    “One of the victims was able to identify them as those who dispossessed her of about N37,000 two weeks ago.

    “All suspects would be charged to court at the conclusion of investigations,” he said.

    Lagos police set up tactical units to combat kidnapping, others

    The Lagos Police Command said it has constituted three tactical units and deployed them in strategic parts of the state to tackle the menace of kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery and other armed violence across the state. 

    Police Commissioner Adegoke Fayoade disclosed this at his maiden press briefing and parade of suspects held at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja.

    According to him, the tactical units were deployed to areas such as Ikorodu, Epe, Ojo, Ijanikin, Badagry and Mushin which were notorious for cultism and other armed violence.

    He said leaders of the units have been mandated to get leaders of such gangs arrested to send appropriate messages to the criminal groups that it was no longer business as usual.

    “Already the number, two and three leaders of a cult gang have been arrested in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.

    “On January 11, at about 1am operatives of the Lagos State Command, upon credible intelligence concerning activities of some hoodlums terrorising Ikorodu and its environs, swung into action, and arrested one Balogun Tola, 35, alias 50; Tunde Oladipupo, 43, Rasa Ridwan, 27 and Abimbola Aro, 29 in connection with cult related activities” he said.

    Fayoade said Tola, Oladipupo and Ridwan were number two and three leaders of a cult gang terrorising Ikorodu.

    “Three English double barrel gun, One pump action rifle, one reining model 700 rifle, one locally made pistol, 74 rounds of live ammunition, 68 rounds of cartridges, one beretta pistol magazine, four axes, three daggers and five cutlasses were recovered from them.

    “The arms and ammunition as well as other dangerous weapons recovered from the gang are enough to hold an entire community hostage.” he said.
