    Drivers receive road safety sensitisation

    Lagos State Safety Commission, in conjunction with Lagos Bus Service Limited, has organised a training for drivers of Lagos Bus Service (BRT) captains.

    The programme in Oshodi, Lagos, had the theme: ‘The Mind Behind the Wheel’.

    It was meant to improve drivers’ knowledge of road safety, emergency response and accident-prevention.

    Director-General, Lanre Mojola, said global reports and local statistics showed over 75 per cent of road accidents were caused by human error.

    He said training, awareness and attitude change were the most effective strategies to reduce crashes and save lives.

    “The knowledge and skills you are receiving will not only make you safer, but will also protect Lagosians, who rely on BRT for daily commuting…”

    Managing Director of Lagos Bus Service, Idowu Oguntona, said the initiative a demonstrates government’s commitment to safe mobility in Lagos.

    He said the BRT system moved over 60 million, maintaining a good safety record.

    Representative of head of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Poju Fowokan, urged drivers to be responsible for their actions on the road.

    He said the bus service was a model of efficient urban transport and enjoined the agency not to relent in sustaining the standards of the BRT system.

    The training, by MTC Consult, featured modules on causes of accidents, human psychology in driving, first-aid response, stress management and safety strategies.

    Drivers went through case studies and scenario-based exercises to sharpen their reflexes in real-time situations.

    Participants thanked Lagos for investing in their development, pledging to apply the knowledge in their operations, to ensure safer roads for users.

    Commission holds safety training

    Lagos State Safety Commission yesterday organised a one-day construction safety training at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry Conference & Exhibition Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.

    The event aimed to equip participants with the knowledge of safety requirements for construction in Lagos State and identify the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders.

    Director-General, Mr. Lanre Mojola, represented by the Technical Adviser, Mr. Seun Awojobi, said the training was part of the commission’s efforts to reduce injuries and fatalities in the built industry.

    He urged stakeholders to support Lagos State Government’s efforts in making the built environment safe and incident-free.

    The event marked a significant step towards promoting safety awareness and preventing accidents in the construction industry.

    One of the facilitators, Retired Director, Public Safety and Well-being, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Adeyinka Adebiyi, spoke on safety infraction and code of conduct in construction companies.

    The other speakers, Odunayo Olukotun and Toro Adeyanju from Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, spoke on application of first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) across the built environment.

    The training covered topics such as First Aid and CPR, Working Safely at Heights and Good Housekeeping.

    Participants are expected to develop safety management systems for their organisations’ construction projects.

    Lagos agency engages gym operators in safety measures

    Lagos State Safety Commission (LSCC) has organised a workshop to sensitise gym operators towards building a safety culture that safeguards lives and protects fitness.

    It said the state government had restated concerns about the safety of gym users, operators and stakeholders.

    Speaking at the workshop held on Victoria Island, Lagos with the theme, “Essentials of Safety in the Fitness Industry”, the Director-General, Mr Lanre Mojola, said the workshop became imperative, ‘’as more individuals are now embracing healthy lifestyle through physical exercise, which has given boost to the fitness industry.’’

    Mojola, represented by the Technical Adviser, Mr. Seun Awojobi, reaffirmed the commitment of the government to the safety of residents, stressing that the commission was working to ensure gym operators understood the principle and practice of safety toward fostering a safer, healthier and more sustainable fitness industry in Lagos State.

    Resource persons engaged participants in safety and preventive measures that could be adopted in their organisations.

     The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Institute of Registered Exercise Professionals in Nigeria, Mr Joel Uzamure, spoke on the importance of hiring certified personnel at the gym, to ensure the delivery of safe and high quality services that promote health and safety of clients, towards upholding the integrity of the profession.

     The CEO, Bimsul Consult, Mr Adeyinka Adebiyi, took participants in the hazards identification and accident prevention in gyms.

     Mr. Thabo Petersen of i-fitness Nigeria and Mrs Natalie February, who joined virtually from South Africa, stressed the importance of equipment maintenance in the fitness industry.

    Lagos holds workshop in emergency response

    Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC), with Help Station, has organised one-day intensive training/workshop in emergency response for the hospitality sector across the state.

    Director General, LSSC, Mr  Lanre Mojola, said emergencies and trauma could strike without warning, but being prepared could make the difference in saving lives.

    Mojola, represented by the Head, Events and Hospitality, Mrs.Olubunmi Jegede, said the workshop was channelled towards promoting safety and emergency response in the hospitality industry, because, according to him, “this is a critical sector that contributes to the economy of Lagos State, and it is essential we prioritise the safety and well-being of workers, guests, contractors and even the employer.”

    The Chief Operating Officer of Health Station, Dr. Yewande Alebiosu, said emergencies and trauma could strike without warning, adding that being prepared could make the difference in saving lives, hence “the intervention of our organisation in partnering with Lagos State Safety Commission about the need for emergency preparedness and trauma care in our communities all over the state.”

    Babajide Adepoju, an engineer from Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, was on ground to provide solution and prevention of fire.

    Workers and owners of hospitality industries in the nooks and crannies of Lagos State attended the event.

    Lagos govt issues safety alert to residents

    Director General of Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC), Mr. Lanre Mojola, has urged Lagosians to take responsibility and be more safety conscious, as end of year approaches.

    Addressing reporters at the weekend about safety in the environment and the current weather accompanied by excessive heat and dry conditions, Mojola said safety of lives must be prioritised.

    He said: “Once there is life, there is hope for a better tomorrow. We can only hope for the best.”

    Mojola said the current weather was unfavourable, adding: ‘’Excessive heat due to dry weather can lead to tiredness, high fever, blurred vision and dehydration, which are uncomfortable and harmful to health.’’

    He warned residents not to compromise their safety.

    He advised against smoking in public and storing flammable substances or fuel at home, stalls, or shops, to prevent fire outbreaks and incidents that could lead to fatalities.

    Mojola enjoined everyone to support the government and be more safety-conscious, ‘’to ensure our homes, workplaces and environment are safe and free from incidents that can endanger lives.’’

    Lagos sets agenda for life safety

    Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) has urged sand miners and dredgers to be mindful of the importance of their lives at dredging locations and mining sites.

    Director General Lanre Mojola gave the advice yesterday in his welcome address at a one-day stakeholders’ meeting with dredgers and miners.

    He said security of lives and properties ‘’is paramount, hence the law that establishes LSSC, especially as it relates to dredging and mining sectors, stipulates that all hands must be on deck to ensure there is no loss of life during dredging and mining.’’

    Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Abiola Koseegbe, represented by Mr Shomilewo Okikiola, said ensuring a safe, resilient and sustainable Lagos, through the protection of lives and property at dredging and mining sites, remained imperative to the state government.

    National President, Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transportation (ATBOWAN), Dr. Tarzan Balogun, said LSSC should provide a standby safety boat for dredgers and miners, to act as checks and balances for their operations at sites.

    President, Dredgers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Bature Akpomejero, said the association was cooperating with the government.

    Construction industry workers get safety training

    Lagos State Safety Commission has organised a training for artisans and workers in construction/built industry to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

    Director-General, Lanre Mojola, spoke yesterday at the training in Alausa, Ikeja.

    Mojola, represented by Director of Public Safety and Well-being, Ajoke Oshokoya, said construction drives economic growth, adding the sector was one of the most risk-prone sectors in the world.

    He said: “Nigerian workers have become more endangered and prone to accidents; some have died, while some have been incapacitated. Construction is one of the most risk-prone sectors, hence the training,’’ Mojola said.

    Lectures were given on selected and important safety topics in construction.

    Some speakers were Health, Safety and Environment Manager at Cappa and D’Alberto, John Edet and Adebiyi Adeyinka, certified safety consultant.

    Collins Waya of BNN Oil and Gas, Port Harcourt, spoke on hazard awareness and identification as well as hazard on construction site, while Kazeem Olanrewaju, of First Aid Trainer Nigeria Red Cross Society, Lagos, spoke on First Aid Principles, causes of unconsciousness and CPR, as well as Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
