  • LASU dons disown ASUU-LASU

Professors and Associate Professors at the Lagos State University (LASU) have dissociated themselves from the victimisation claim of the leaders of its Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

They asked the aggrieved lecturers to seek redress in court.

They made this known at a meeting last week at the senate chambers, where the issue involving disciplinary actions against some academic staff of the university and conflicting statements stemming from ASUU-LASU Executives was addressed.

In a communiqué signed by Prof. Martins Anetekhai and Dr Sylvester Odion Akhaine, the body of Professors and Associate Professors, condemned the intrusion of the zonal chapter of ASUU for conducting a press conference claiming that Dr Akinloye Oyewunmi and Dr Adeyemi-Suenu, were still leaders of the union.

However, they noted that their stance against the ASUU-LASU leadership did not detract from their support for a united front for the union.

“We observe the undue interference of the Zonal Co-ordinator of ASUU (Lagos Zone) calling a Press Conference, the content of which did not emanate from the ASUU-LASU congress and therefore, we totally dissociate ourselves from it.

“The union belongs to all of us and all hands must be on deck to ensure a united ASUU-LASU body,” the group said.

    SSANU appeals government’s planned harmonisation

The leadership of the Senior Staff Academic Union of Universities-Lagos State University (SSANU-LASU) has called on the Lagos State government to respect the December ruling of the National Industrial Court that halted di-harmonisation of SSANU members at the university staff schools nationwide.

SSANU leadership lauded the  government for the peace that has now returned to the once troubled institution under the new administration, adding that anything to the contrary would obliterate the harmony workers now enjoy.

Chairman of SSANU-LASU, Comrade Saheed Oseni, said the union had written the government and the Governing Council to backpedal on its planned di-harmonisation of its colleagues.  The union said it suspected that the committee set up by the university to look into the matter is foot-dragging and therefore casting suspicion on its intention.  The union , vowed to resist plans by management to embark on such action.

The union’s new leadership led by Oseni was returned unopposed after four year tenure (2013-2017). The new executives took a fresh oath of office in a ritual supervised by SSANU National Vice President (Southwest) Comrade Alfred Jimoh.

In June, SSANU-LASU held a congress to decide modalities for electing the executive. Interestingly, the congress endorsed the outgoing executive for another term based on its good performance. However, an electoral committee chaired by Comrade Okegbuan Larry was set up and given a month to ensure congress’ resolution was accepted by all.

“After the June congress, our committees held meetings and prepared a timetable for sale of forms for members interested in any of the available offices, including screening. In the end, the entire list was unopposed, and so we ended up upholding the list,” said Okegbuan who was represented by Quadri Wasiu, another member of the electoral committee who presented the committee’s report.

Jimoh described SSANU-LASU as one of the most dependable arms of the union.

Though SSANU-LASU has done well, Jimoh said he smelt a rat when the outgoing executive communicated the outcome of the electoral committee to him.

“When I was told the executive had been returned unopposed, I had my fears,” Jimoh began.

“I immediately remember that a similar incidence occurred in another university in Southwest here. When their executive told me they had ben returned unopposed, I decided to travel there and met with the executives. I was shocked that even within the executive members, there were animosities. I then asked the executive to call a congress and again I realised there was a disarhomy within the congress. This made me conclude the executive were initially being economical with the truth.”

To forestall all future doubts, Jimoh admonished members to move three motions- to officially  adopt the report of the electoral committee;  return the outgoing executive on account of good performance; and dissolve the outgoing executive.

Saheed who thanked the entire members after taking the oath of office for a new tenure, vowed that the new leadership would surpass its former achievements especially in relation to members’ welfare.

Other members include: Awoyemi Bola (secretary); Lawal Oluseyi (Treasurer); Arogunjo Richard (vice chairman Ikeja);  Ogunbiyi Olatunde (PRO); and Coker Enitan (trustee)

Key into digitization – Don Charges

Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University, on Monday advised undergraduates to seek deeper knowledge of Information Technology (IT) to attain success in the modern world.

Fagbohun gave the advice during the matriculation of 1,112 ‎ LASU students for Sandwich Degree Programme for 2016/2017 academic session.

The vice chancellor was represented by his deputy in charge of academics, Prof. Noah Olumuyiwa.

“If you do not key into digitisation, you will lose out.

“The modern world revolves around IT,’’ he said, adding that computer literacy would give a graduate an edge above his counterparts.

The vice chancellor also advised to the students to desist from indecent dressing, cultism, examination malpractice and other vices.

According to him, the university will not tolerate ‎them.

‎“Punctuality to class must be your business; be objective, have decorum and always think of LASU because it is the brand we sell.

“‎We must collectively market the brand to succeed,’’ he said.

Prof. Clement Fasan, Dean, Faculty of Education, congratulated the students and gave the assurance that their results would not be delayed.

“We have cleared a backlog of part-time students’ results,’’ he said.

According to him, the school’s ‎system has been digitised, enabling uploading of results online.

Fasan also assured the students that they would register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) immediately after graduation.

‎‎Dr Olufemi Obayori, the Acting Dean, Students Affairs, LASU, urged the students to be careful in their associations.

According to Obayori, there are indications that sandwich programme is a recruitment ground for cultists.

“This is because some candidates for sandwich programme are mature individuals, dropouts or graduates of other institutions,’’ he said.

He warned that LASU would not hesitate to expel students involved in cultism, rape, armed robbery and other criminal activities.

Dr Abosede Oyediji of the LASU Counselling Unit urged the students to seek advice on academic and other issues when necessary.

Oyediji noted that many sandwich students struggled to cope with academics, family life and work pressure.

“So, you need a counsellor to guide and encourage you,’’ he said.

Dr Shola Oladipupo, Acting Director, Sandwich Programme, LASU, also urged the students to seek guidance at all times.

Orefuwa graduated with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)  of 4.74 at the university’s 21st convocation held on March 22.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on reports that 36,540 students were conferred with degrees, diploma and doctorate while 26 made first class.

An ecstatic Orefunwa, said she felt the contraction just before the convocation and was scared if the baby would deny her the opportunity of participating in the graduation.

“I was having contraction and was scared that the baby might come before the convocation.

“I told God to take control because I wanted to experience the convocation and God took control until I got home.

“It was when I got home that it started again and my husband took me to the hospital where I gave birth at about 1. 00 p.m. on Thursday,’’ Orefuwa told NAN.

Reliving her experience, 29-year-old Orefuwa said she had yet to come terms with the reality of becoming a mother.

Earlier, she told NAN during the institution’s convocation on Wednesday that the journey through the school did not come easy but with determination and motivation, she had a good story to tell.

“The journey through the institution was not easy; it took me seven years of writing the UTME before I finally gained admission in 2012.

“I also applied for direct entry three times at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

“During this period of waiting, I started professional career at the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN) in 2007 and qualified as an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) in 2010,’’Orefuwa said.

She said that she wanted to study accounting but found herself studying education, adding that she enjoyed every bit of it and never dreamt of coming out with a first class and becoming the best student.

According to her, self-determination and motivation through her father’s insistence on academic excellence gave her an edge.

“My aim is to get my first degree certificate after several years of waiting and to satisfy my dad, who has been insisting on academic certificate before professional certificate.”

She said that her marriage in the final year and the pregnancy did not affect her academic performance.

“I had a CGPA of 4.72 before marriage and I graduated with 4.74 point; I got married in 2016 and my husband was very supportive.”

‘Walk tall as a LASU student’ – VC to new excos

Lagos State University (LASU) Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olarewaju Fagbohun has encouraged the newly elected student Union executives never to underrate themselves in the school and in their community because they are great leaders with enormous potentials.

He also advised them to be at the front burner of their careers and not waste their time.

“If you have come to study for a five year course, don’ t waste your time to use five and a half. At a certain age, you must be out there pushing the frontiers of your career. And as a leader, you must be able to confront and solve matters. There is nothing that dialogue will not resolve”.

  • Man seeks dissolution of 11-year-old marriage

Man seeks dissolution of 11-year-old marriage

A 32-year-old man, Aliu Olagunju, on Wednesday in Lagos pleaded with an Agege Customary Court to dissolve his 11 years old marriage with his wife, Adijat, over alleged threat to his life.

Olagunju told the court that there was no more love between him and his wife.

According to Olagunju, his wife is arrogant, does not take corrections as well as not taking care of the children.

“She neglects the children and no motherly love for them,” the petitioner said.

Olagunju told the court that two years ago he sought the dissolution of the marriage, but due to several mediations, he accepted to withdraw the suit.

He said he had moved out of the house to a friend’s place due to his wife trouble.

“She threatened my life, saying she will kill me and that she is ready to become a widow,” he said.

The petitioner begged the court to separate them, as he did not want to die now as his wife always threatened to kill him.

He also prayed the court for the custody of the first two children, adding that the last child, who is nine months old, can live with his wife.

Defending the allegations, Adijat, a final year student of the Lagos State University and mother of three, denied the allegations.

She said that her husband was irresponsible and does not provide for her and the children.

“My husband beats me constantly whenever we had any misunderstanding and he does not have any respect for me,” she said.

The respondent, however, begged the court not to grant her husband’s request, saying that she still loves him.

President of the court Phillip Williams, adjourned the case till April 21 for mediation and urged the couple to come with their family.

  • UTME holds nationwide, records improvement

    UTME holds nationwide, records improvement

The third edition of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board for universities polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of education held nationwide Saturday with noticeable improvement in the conduct of the examination .

Our reporter who went round some of the centres in Ojo/Agbara area of Lagos, observed that unlike before, there were adequate provision of materials such as calculators, pencils and erasers in all the centres visited. Also, the data capturing machine which used to experience hiccups, performed impressively high this time around.
For instance, as at 8.30am , the data capturing machine in Career Comprehensive High School, Cassidy, Okoko, one of the JAMB centres with Centre No 036209, had already captured 439 of the 540 candidates allotted by JAMB to each centre.
One of the officials who pleaded not to be mentioned said less than ten cases of candidates were yet to be captured as the device had problems identifying their thumbprints.
Said the official: “We have asked them (yet-to-be-captured candidates) and others that may be subsequently discovered to step aside so that we can conclude the entire capturing session first. After, we will check their names against the register to know if the affected candidates are the rightful owners of their slips or not.”
There was similar scenario at Augusta College, Iyana Ishashi. The supervisor of the centre with Centre No 036206, Mr Femi Keshinro, said the data capturing machine worked impressively well prompting to examination to commence at 9am.
However, there was a mild drama in one of the three centres (Faculty of Arts with centre No 36102) within the Lagos State University, Ojo. An official of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, one of the paramilitary bodies deployed by JAMB to provide security for the examination, was caught while trying to send some answers to some supposed candidates in the examination halls through two cell phones.
A microchip with solutions to Mathematics (Type A), was also found on him. The NSCD officer who identified himself as Kazeem Adewale was caught by the men of the LASU security guards. Adewale initially denied, claiming the phones and microchips were given to him by his boss another female office whom she simply identified as Adesanu. But Adesanu denied the claim outright saying she neither gave the phones, nor the microchips to Adewale.
The suspect was later handed over to the police deployed from Ojo for the exam.
The other two centres were- Faculty of Law with Centre No  36109 and Faculty of Management Sciences with Centre No 36010.
The coordinator of the three centres Prof Sena Bakre who spoke to this reporter, urged JAMB authorities to beam their searchlight more on NSCD officials, fingering them as one of the abettors of examination rackets which are often recorded during JAMB.
A Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) Bakre said she suspected Adewale’s atrocities probably had the backing of his other colleagues especially his superiors at the centres, adding that since he had been arrested, they became suspiciously more nervous.
“For me, I no longer find this civil defence people dependable again. They are usually the ones that help many of these students get examinations answers either via cell phones or any other means. I think the authority should do something about this. This people have outlived their usefulness,” she said.
