  • Lagos to arraign 30 cart pushers

THE lagos State  Task Force on Environment and Other Special Offences (Enforcement Unit)  yesterday arrested 30 cart pushers for dumping refuse indiscriminately on road median in the night.

Its Chairman, Olayinka Egbeyemi, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the task force clamped down on them  following the ban on their activities by the government.

He said they would be charged to court soon.

Egbeyemi said they were found dumping refuse on the roadside especially at night.

He said: “There are reports that refuse is littering  Lekki, Victoria Island, Ajah and other parts of the state and investigations reveal that it is the handiwork of unscrupulous elements within Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and their outside sponsors who are not comfortable with the new arrangement for the management of waste in the state and are  bent on sabotaging government’s effort.

“The state government has vowed to go all out against the saboteurs and after their sponsors and punish them.

“We also need to let Lagosians know that it is illegal to use cart pushers to evacuate refuse and they should stop encouraging it. There are PSP vehicles that come around to pack refuse and they are the ones they should patronise and not these cart pushers.

“We want to notify all these cart pushers that their activities are illegal in Lagos. Lagos is a mega city and we have all it takes to collect refuse. So, the issue of going to the streets and collecting refuse and then dumping same on the road is an act of sabotage to the government,” he said.

Traditional ruler wants reintroduction of price control to stabilise economy

The traditional ruler of Isolo in Lagos State, Oba Kabiru Agbabiaka, has called on both the federal and state governments to reintroduce price control system in the country, particularly on food items.

The traditional ruler, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos, wondered why there had not been stabilisation in the prices of goods.

He explained that a situation where the prices of food items were not substantially stable, the poor in the society would not find it easy to feed adequately.

According to him, because the larger populace is not being taken care of is the reason why the country is experiencing high rate of crime.

“Hunger is high in the land; people cannot eat three times a day. Sometimes, this is the situation that force our youths to travel out and become slaves in strange lands.

“Many private companies have closed down because of the perpetual blackout being experienced daily,’’ the traditional said.

On education, the monarch blamed the Federal Government for the proliferation of private universities against government-owned universities, noting that this had contributed immensely to the falling standard of education.

On agriculture, the monarch, a well-known socialite, said that government could only guarantee food sufficiency by enabling farmers with funds and implements to mass produce food.

“There should be credit facilities by the government where peasant farmers and even the big farmers could access funds to farm.

“Government should also ensure that it provides implements, fertilisers, high yield seedlings and other inputs that will enhance agricultural production.

“By so doing, it will guarantee enough food for local consumption, for exports and also create employment and ultimately fight crime,’’ the Secretary, Council of Obas in Lagos State said. (NAN)

Lagos bans cart pushers, wheelbarrow operators

The Lagos State Government yesterday announced a total ban on the operations of cart pushers and wheel barrow operators in the state, saying that their activities were inimical to environmental cleanliness. In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tunji Bello, the State Government said that with the flag off of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI), the continuous activities of cart pushers will pose a threat to the success of the initiative.

Bello said that investigations had also revealed that the cart pushers are responsible for most of the illegal dumping of waste in canals and road medians at night which causes flooding, adding that aside constituting environmental nuisance, they were also traces of security threats.

“What the State Government has discovered is that these set of people use the night to perpetrate all sorts of dastardly acts. They dump refuse indiscriminately on the median of major roads and highways. They also pose serious security threats because they use those carts to hide arms and ammunition and hide under the guise of carrying refuse to rob unsuspecting residents,” the SSG said.

He said that the state government has finalised plans to ensure that the CLI would cover every area of the state and ensure that refuse are well packed and collected, urging residents to desist from patronising them or risk prosecution. “The State Government has declared zero tolerance for the activities of cart pushers and wheel barrow operators. Security agencies in the state have been directed to ensure that those found still operating are arrested and prosecuted according to the state environmental laws.

“The law also applies to residents who patronise cart pushers. It is an offence and the state government would not hesitate to enforce the law to put a stop to such practice,” Bello said.

  • Community cries out over road blockade

Community cries out over road blockade

Residents of Imoke community in Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State have cried out for urgent government intervention over alleged acts of indiscriminate building of houses on a major road in the community, saying this has taken toll on the community.

Residents said the encroachment and blockade of the land started last year adding that it led to a massive flooding during the last rainy season.

One of the residents, Jamiu Adeleke, said people of the community are facing hardship as a result of being denied access to their homes following the blockade of the road.

He explained that the problem was caused by some people in neighbouring Ajah town who were resettled in the community by the state government after their land was taken for development.

Adeleke said the Ajah settlers have since gone outside the portion of land allocated to them and started erecting  houses on other people’s land and the only access road in the community.

‘’The Ajah settlers have been encroaching on the community’s land and building houses on the major road leading in and out of this community from Ibeju-Epe expressway and this is unacceptable.

‘’The leadership of Imoke community especially the traditional ruler of the community had intervened in the matter by asking those involved to desist from the act to no avail.

‘’ We are hereby urging the Lagos State government to wade into the matter by restraining the masterminds before the situation gets out of hand.’’

Lamenting the unpleasant effect of the development on the community, another resident, Omobola Junaid said: “The situation is worsening by the day because of the inaccessibility to the community. We can no longer easily drive in or out of the community because the only access road has been encroached on and blocked following indiscriminate siting of houses on the road.’’

He added: “No one says they should not build their houses, but they should do so reasonably on the land allocated to them and not block the road so that others could go in and out.

‘’What we are experiencing everyday as a result of the road blockade caused by the indiscriminate construction of houses on a section of the road is untold. The state government must therefore come to our aid by stopping the perpetrators once and for all.’’

The President of the court, Mr Akin Akinniyi, in his judgment, said it appeared that the estranged couple were tired of the marriage as all efforts to reconcile them had failed.

“Since both parties consented to the dissolution of their marriage, this court has no choice than to dissolve the marriage.

“The marriage between Elizabeth Shofunde and Babatunde Shofunde is hereby dissolved today, both parties henceforth cease to be husband and wife.

“Both parties are free to go their separate ways without any hindrance and molestation,” Akinniyi held.

“My husband abandoned me and the children after he impregnated another woman.

“It is now three years he left us; he refused to give me money for the children’s school fees, feeding and house rent,’’ she said.

Elizabeth said that Babatunde battered her at any slight provocation, alleging that her husband was a drunkard.

The mother of three added that she was fed up with the 11-year-old union because of Babatunde’s behaviour.

The respondent, Babatunde, did not deny the allegations, but said that Elizabeth’s attitude pushed him to another woman.
