He stated that the salon moved from being a local favourite to gaining international recognition, saying within two years, the new digital setup helped the business pull in over 8.5 million US dollars in revenue.

  • Why we are selling subsidised Sallah rams, by Lagos council boss

Why we are selling subsidised Sallah rams, by Lagos council boss

Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area, Hon Rasaq Olusola Ajala, has explained that his Council decided to sell Rams to Muslims at subsidised rate to meet their religious obligations as part of his administration’s initiatives to ensure that the people feel the positive impact of democracy.

The LCDA chair made this submission during the 8th edition of subsidised sale of Sallah Rams, which was held yesterday at the Council’s Secretariat, Town Planning Way, Ilupeju, Lagos.

The programme, which started eight years ago, held early morning yesterday with a huge crowd of the LCDA residents, intent on buying Rams for the eid el kabir celebration, in attendance.

In this year’s edition, over 1000 healthy Rams are up for sale at a subsidised rate of N75,000 each for Rams that could ordinarily sell for as high as N200,000.00 and above in the open market.

According the LCDA Chair: ” This subsidised Rams sale is about meeting the needs of our Muslim brothers and sisters in accordance with the dictates of the Holy Quran, just as we sell chickens at subsidised rates during Christmas to our Christian brothers and sisters. Democracy is about people and their welfare, and this is what this scheme is all about”

To benefit from this scheme, the Chairman explained, “you do not need to be connected to anyone in the Council. The only requirements are your voter’s card, which is to identify you as a voter in the local council development area and your radio and television licence, to show that you are a patriotic citizen of the Council.”

The subsidised Rams sale event, according to participants, demonstrates vividly the organisational acumen of the Council under the leadership of Mr Rasaq Ajala.

Although a mammoth crowd had converged on the Council premises as early as 6am, the sale was so orderly that the possibility of stampede or any untoward occurrence was almost nil.

The buyers formed a long queue by the entrance to the gate and they ushered into the premises, in groups between 15 and 20, to a tent where their means of identification, voters’ card,  is screened. Upon satisfactory screening, the buyer is given a number, and he then joins  another queue from where he is  ushered into another tent where payment is made. The receipt has the card number earlier given at the screening tent. It is this screening card number and the receipt he presents at the Ram Collection Point.

Tajudeen Ajagbe,  a resident of Ilupeju and one of the buyers who arrived early enough to be among the second set of those who were ushered into the Council, described the arrangement as “seamless and commendable.”

“Hon Ajala, our able and capable Chairman has demonstrated superb leadership abilities. What you are witnessing now is a testimony to those leadership qualities. This delightful and commendable subsidised Sallah Rams sale, which started eight years ago, is a reflection of the Chair’s leadership style and his undying love for the downtrodden. He has etched his name on the right side of history, and posterity will remember him for his people-friendly programmes, one of which is what you are witnessing now.”

  • Immigify to host Nigerians seeking U.S immigration at Lagos banquet

Immigify to host Nigerians seeking U.S immigration at Lagos banquet

U.S.-based immigration technology firm Immigify has announced plans to host a high-level event in Lagos aimed at connecting Nigerian professionals, entrepreneurs, scholars, and researchers with premium U.S. immigration opportunities.

Titled “The Green Card Golden Banquet,” the event is scheduled for August 16, 2025, and will spotlight U.S. immigration pathways such as the EB-1 Green Card and O-1A Visa, reserved for individuals with exceptional abilities, international acclaim, and documented achievements in their fields.

Speaking at a recent virtual press conference, Immigify co-founders Emma Olorunsheyi and Deji Adesola said the banquet is designed as a strategic platform for Nigerian talent seeking to access global markets through legitimate, elite immigration channels.

They described the initiative as a bridge between top-tier Nigerian talent and high-level U.S. immigration opportunities.

“We’re excited to bring this event to Nigeria at such a crucial time,” said Olorunsheyi.

“There is a growing pool of globally competitive professionals who are eligible for advanced immigration pathways but simply lack access to the right guidance, and that’s what this event is about, to give access and clarity.

“We will be arming attendees at the banquet with rare information, but beyond that, the event is about identifying and inducting a select group of outstanding Nigerians into our newly launched “Elite Club”,” added.

Olorunsheyi, who went on to explain that the club was a membership-based initiative offering hands-on support in navigating complex immigration processes.

Adesola echoed his sentiments, adding that “the EB-1 Green Card and O-1A visa categories are often misunderstood or underutilized by Nigerians.”

He stated that these routes were designed specifically for individuals with demonstrable excellence in their careers, and that the event’s mission was to demystify the pathways and offer support to qualified persons.

When asked about registration requirements, Adesola said: “Everyone interested in the banquet will undergo initial profiling for eligibility before receiving an official invitation to attend. So, yes, we are not trying to reach everyone, we’re targeting the top one per cent of talent ready to take a global leap. Hence the event itself is paid.”

“Nigerians who believe they may qualify for these specialized immigration pathways are invited to complete an eligibility screening and reserve a seat via the official event page, immigify.com/banquet-event,” he added.

“The tech startup, which recently got accepted into the renowned Techstars Workforce Development Accelerator, is hosting this event at a time when increasing interest in global career opportunities has continued to cause rising emigration in Africa.

“As global talent mobility becomes increasingly important in a post-pandemic economy, events like “The Green Card Golden Banquet’ represent a growing shift, one where African professionals are actively being positioned for leadership in the global marketplace.”

Lagos channels N8.4b on festivals to drive culture, tourism

The Lagos state government has disclosed that it spent over N8.47 billion to sponsor more than 143 festivals and cultural events across the state in the last year, as part of strategic efforts to position the state as Africa’s premier hub for arts, tourism, and cultural enterprise.

The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held in commemoration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second year in office for his second term.

According to the Commissioner, the state’s massive investment in festivals and cultural showcases is already yielding results in economic stimulation, job creation, and global media visibility.

She said, “Through the ministry, the Creative Arts Department sponsored the festivals with the sum of approximately N8,475,238,265. This robust investment reflects the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to positioning Lagos as the leading hub for arts, culture, and entertainment in Africa.”

Benson-Awoyinka noted that the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, as well as the Lagos State Films and Videos Censors Board, have worked in synergy with the ministry to deliver on its mandate.

“Over the past year, we have expanded our reach, deepened strategic partnerships both locally and internationally, and delivered impactful initiatives that not only showcase the beauty and diversity of Lagos but also empower our youth and creative entrepreneurs,” she stated.

The Commissioner highlighted that the sponsored festivals and events, including the Fanti Carnival, Africa Fashion Designers Award, Kurunmi Stage Play, and the Badagry International Film Festival, were curated not just to entertain, but to preserve heritage and stimulate the local economy. She emphasised the alignment of these efforts with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, particularly its fifth pillar, which targets the development of entertainment and tourism.

She revealed that over 124 creative stakeholders were issued endorsement letters by the ministry in the past year to aid them in securing sponsorships for their cultural initiatives.

“Each initiative contributes significantly to cultural preservation, economic stimulation, job creation, tourism inflow, and global media visibility, reinforcing Lagos’s brand as a dynamic creative capital,” Benson-Awoyinka added.

As part of its broader cultural preservation efforts, she said the government has restored 11 out of 30 identified heritage monuments and has commenced the reconstruction of the Lagos Theatre in Oregun, which was destroyed during the #EndSARS protests in 2020.

She also highlighted the international dimension of the ministry’s work, referencing the November 2024 launch of the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, which attracted global dignitaries, including Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria and American cultural envoys.

“Lagos is increasingly on the global map. From hosting BBC Studios executives to meeting with CNN’s Richard Quest and Global Tourism Head Zara Driss at the World Travel Market in London, our message is clear,” she said.

On youth empowerment, the commissioner revealed that over 10,000 young creatives have received professional training in animation, screenwriting, film production, and sound design through partnerships with leading creative academies like Del-York, EbonyLife, and the African Film Academy.

The Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board, she added, has issued over 1,100 permits to filmmakers, while actively engaging in digital content regulation to maintain industry standards.

Among the state’s most high-profile tourism events was the 2024 Greater Lagos Fiesta, which featured headliners like Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Tiwa Savage across all five divisions of the state. Additionally, the Lagos Shopping Festival, held at Onikan Stadium, drew over 50,000 visitors and featured more than 400 vendors, a testament to the integration of commerce and cultural experiences.

“Lagos is not just a destination. It is a cultural awakening. The Fanti Carnival is an invitation to become part of a living history that dances, sings and celebrates resilience,” she said.

Benson-Awoyinka also underlined the state’s growing international reputation, noting recognitions such as her own Special Recognition Award in San Francisco for visionary leadership, and a Headies Award given to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his support of the creative sector.

She concluded by announcing a strategic partnership with BBC Studios to elevate Lagos storytelling and expand its footprint in global media, while hinting at further ambitions for the Lagos Shopping Festival to become a permanent fixture on the international retail tourism calendar.

“This partnership with the BBC is part of our larger vision to position Lagos as Africa’s storytelling capital, attracting both visitors and investors through the power of culture, media, and tourism. I am personally committed to ensuring that Lagos is not only seen but also understood for the richness of its heritage and the brilliance of its people,” Benson-Awoyinka said.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described the ministry as a strategic arm of government.

“We feel this ministry, and wherever the ministry moves, Lagos moves. This ministry has revived culture and tourism to the benefit of Lagos, Nigeria, and the Black race,” he said.

Lagos transport commissioner flags off CNG conversion training for students

No fewer than 500 students from polytechnics across southwest Nigeria have commenced a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion training program in Lagos, in a strategic move aligned with the state’s clean energy agenda and the Federal Government’s push for alternative fuels.

The initiative, themed “The Future of CNG in Nigeria: Empowering a Sustainable Tomorrow,” was officially flagged off at the Yaba College of Technology by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in partnership with the Mojisola Olayinka Fatungase Edema (MOFE) Foundation and the South-West Zone of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS).

Speaking at the event, Osiyemi emphasised the environmental and economic imperatives of transitioning from petrol and diesel to CNG.

“CNG is an eco-friendly fuel that emits significantly fewer pollutants, and this shift will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while supporting Nigeria’s climate action goals,” Osiyemi stated.

“By training students in CNG conversion, we are not only preparing them for the future but also accelerating Lagos’ journey towards cleaner, safer, and more sustainable transport.”

The keynote speaker, Engr. Funmilade Akingbagbohun who is the immediate past National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), underscored the dual value of the program. According to her, the initiative addresses two pressing national needs—youth empowerment and environmental sustainability.

“Leveraging Nigeria’s abundant natural gas reserves to power vehicles not only reduces our dependence on imported fuels but also strengthens our energy security and creates skilled jobs,” Akingbagbohun said.

“These students are becoming pioneers in a sector that will define Nigeria’s clean energy future.”

The training program complements Lagos State’s broader clean energy initiatives, which include the phased introduction of CNG-powered buses under the Lagos Bus Service Limited (LBSL) and the state’s Eco-Friendly Bus Scheme.

The state government has been deliberate in its adoption of alternative fuels in a bid to modernize its transport system, reduce urban air pollution, and lower operating costs.
