Lagos builds 10,000 housing units in six years, says Commissioner

The Lagos State Government has increased the state’s housing stock by delivering an impressive 9,970 home units in the last six years, the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, has said.

Speaking at a ministerial press briefing to commemorate the second year in office of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s second term, Akinderu-Fatai highlighted the administration’s commitment to tackling the state’s housing deficit amidst global and local challenges.

The commissioner acknowledged the pressing global affordable housing crisis, exacerbated by rapid urbanisation, a trend particularly evident in Lagos, one of the world’s most populous cities with over 23 million residents.

He noted that Nigeria faces a massive housing deficit estimated at over 22 million units, a situation compounded by rural-urban migration and infrastructure limitations.

“Despite these challenges, the Sanwo-Olu administration has adopted a multi-pronged approach to boost housing delivery. This includes direct budgetary allocations for construction projects targeting low-income earners and fostering Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) by offering incentives and streamlining approval processes for real estate developers.

“The impact of the economic shock waves across the world is affecting the low and medium-income earners and rendering many homeless as a result of the huge surge in construction costs, materials, as well as a hike in housing rentals,” Akinderu-Fatai said. He emphasized that the government recognizes housing as a crucial pillar of economic development.

Highlighting the ministry’s achievements, the Commissioner said “9,970 new home units delivered through direct government funding and PPP initiatives over the past six years.

“Inaugurating of 21 housing estates across Lagos State’s five administrative divisions since 2019.

“Ongoing construction of 4,052 additional units in five housing schemes, expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026, bringing the total delivery to 14,022 units.

“The Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) completing 12 housing projects (710 homes) with 25 ongoing projects expected to add another 2,415 units.

“The Lagos State Mortgage Board (LMB) assisting over 20,000 residents with mortgage and Rent-To-Own policies, resulting in 312 individuals achieving full homeownership. A new policy allows Rent-To-Own participants with six years of payments to take full ownership under specific conditions.

“The Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) registering 925 practitioners, successfully mediating 1,243 of 1,580 disputes, and recovering over N295 million and 20 properties.

“Creation of approximately 13,749 direct and indirect jobs within the housing sector in the last six years.

“Retraining of over 500 artisans to enhance construction quality.

“Implementation of estate sustainability and facility management strategies, generating an additional 900 direct and indirect jobs.

“Digitalization of work processes in key departments to improve efficiency. “A rebate program enabling 770 civil servants to access homeownership, with 120 units allocated to teachers and health personnel in remote areas,” he stated

Looking ahead, the Commissioner announced plans to release over 1,600 more homes as ongoing projects reach completion. He also highlighted the government’s commitment to exploring a monthly rental scheme to ease the burden of yearly rent payments for low-income earners and to promote transparency in home allocation through balloting.

Akinderu-Fatai acknowledged the challenges faced by the ministry, including land encroachment, litigations, and inflationary trends, and outlined strategic initiatives being deployed to address these issues, such as revitalized joint venture partnerships and a focus on research and innovation in building materials and technology.

He expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support and to various stakeholders and agencies for their collaborative efforts in achieving significant strides in the Lagos State housing sector.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, while responding to questions regarding the escalating cost of renting accommodation in the state, clarified that existing regulations stipulate that agents should not charge more than 10 percent as agency fees, in addition to legal fees.

However, she acknowledged a critical loophole in the current tenancy law.

“The present tenancy law does not explicitly state the maximum amount agents can charge, creating an ambiguity that many agents are exploiting by imposing exorbitant fees,” Odunuga-Bakare explained.

Lagos unveils Gates-funded advocacy project to strengthen PHCs, maternal, child health

The Lagos state government has unveiled a multi-year advocacy project aimed at strengthening primary healthcare (PHC) and enhancing maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and nutrition (RMNCAH+N).

The initiative, titled “Advocacy Solutions to Improve PHC and RMNCAH Delivery and Health Outcomes,” is funded by the Gates Foundation and will be co-implemented by global reproductive health organization EngenderHealth.

It will run through April 2028, focusing on policy reform, gender-sensitive programming, accountability, and expanded access to quality care.

Unveiled at an event held at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, the project was described as a strategic intervention aligned with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda on healthcare transformation.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi said,

“This is not just a ceremonial launch; it is a call to action. Our goal is simple: to ensure every mother, child, adolescent, and family in Lagos has access to quality, affordable healthcare with positive outcomes.”

Dr. Ogunyemi emphasized that while Lagos has made progress in health service delivery, the new initiative will help consolidate gains and close existing gaps, particularly in underserved communities.

EngenderHealth’s Country Director, Dr. Kabiru Atta, said the advocacy-driven project will prioritize equity, nutrition, and sustainability.

“We are co-creating solutions with the government and stakeholders to ensure state ownership and long-term continuity beyond 2028,” he said.

According to Dr. Atta, key focus areas include improved health budgeting, policy accountability, and ensuring nutrition for children during the critical first 1,000 days of life.

The Gates Foundation’s State Consultant, Mr. Olakunle Daramola, lauded Lagos for its leadership in health reform.

“Nigeria is critical to Africa’s success, and Lagos, as a leading state, is showing what is possible through innovation and collaboration,” he said, pledging continued support for equity-focused healthcare initiatives.

Stakeholders at the launch, ranging from health officials to civil society leaders, voiced strong support for the project’s mission.

Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Ibrahim Mustafa, acknowledged Lagos’s relatively strong health indicators but warned that “more needs to be done to reach the standard expected of a subnational like Lagos.”

He praised the high-level political will backing the initiative and called for increased community and religious stakeholder engagement.

Permanent Secretary of Lagos Health District VI, Dr. Abimbola Mabogunje, highlighted the importance of shared responsibility, while Co-Chair of the Lagos State Accountability Mechanism (LASAM), Mr. Laundry Sagbo, emphasized that strengthening PHC is one of the most cost-effective routes to achieving Universal Health Coverage.

The event also saw representatives from the Centre for Communication and Social Impact (CCSI), Clinton Health Access Initiative, and Pathfinder reaffirm their commitment to reducing preventable deaths among women and children under five.

The Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) Mrs. Adetoro Tayo-Adetoro, echoed the sentiment, noting that the agency is “always delighted to participate in initiatives that expand access and improve quality in healthcare.”

As the state moves forward with this ambitious advocacy project, stakeholders expressed optimism that the partnership would deliver measurable, lasting impact on health outcomes for Lagos’s growing population.

The Lagos State Government has taken swift action to address escalating concerns in Lekki Phase 1 following a distress call from the community’s residents association.

Lagos unveils bus reform initiative to transform public transport

The Lagos State Government has launched a Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) aimed at overhauling public transportation, starting with a pilot scheme along the Lekki-Epe corridor.

Implemented through the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the initiative focuses on enhancing commuter safety, improving operational efficiency, and leveraging technology to tackle the state’s transport challenges.

Speaking on radio, Olasunkanmi Ojowuro, Director of Transport Operations at the Ministry of Transportation, highlighted safety as the core of the reform. “Commuters will travel in safer vehicles, driven by well-trained professionals,” he assured.

“All drivers on the corridor will undergo mandatory training by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) to ensure defensive driving standards.

“Vehicles, inspected by the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), must meet strict safety criteria, with non-compliant operators required to upgrade or face exclusion.”

The BRI integrates private sector operators, merging existing players into a structured system. Twelve registered operators, managing fleets of up to 50 vehicles each, will service the corridor using high- and medium-capacity buses, alongside smaller vehicles like koropes and danfos for first- and last-mile connectivity.

Ojowuro noted that these smaller buses will ferry passengers from inner communities to major hubs, ensuring seamless integration with larger routes.

“Technology is a game-changer in the initiative. An Intelligent Transport System (ITS) will reduce human interference in traffic management, easing congestion. Ojowuro said.

“A cashless payment system, using the Cowry Card, eliminates fare disputes and enhances transparency.

“Vehicles will be equipped with barcodes for easy tracking, enabling swift enforcement of traffic regulations.

The Lekki-Epe corridor, a high-traffic axis, was chosen for the pilot due to its strategic importance.

Operators have embraced the reform, with compliant vehicles being repainted in the state’s white-and-blue livery. According to Ojowuro, the painting process, which includes panel beating, is underway and expected to conclude within weeks.

Ojowuro highlighted the broader benefits: reduced pollution from high-capacity buses, shorter travel times, and a commuter-friendly experience. “This is about moving Lagos forward with a safe, efficient, and modern transport system,” he said.

The initiative aligns with LAMATA’s Strategic Transport Master Plan, complementing existing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), rail, and waterway projects.

APC leaders reject alleged imposition of LCDA chairmanship candidate in Lagos

Leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) have rejected the alleged imposition of Bayo Adefuye as the party’s chairmanship candidate for the upcoming local government elections.

In a formal protest letter addressed to the Chairman of the APC Electoral Committee, Hon. Babatunde Ogala, SAN, the group described the move as “undemocratic, provocative, and a clear affront to the will of the people.”

The letter was jointly signed by ward representatives across all nine wards in Yaba LCDA, including Domingo Babajide (Ward A), Kemi Aboyarin (Ward B), Adediran Olorunnimbe (Ward C), Taoreed Abiona (Ward D), Alani Ifatokun (Ward E), Oladunjoye Omoniyi (Ward F), Olaofe Fatai (Ward G), Idayat Abdul Rasaq (Ward H), and Shakiru Adebowale (Ward I).

The signatories, who identified themselves as the Apex Leadership of the APC in Yaba, warned that the alleged imposition could severely damage party unity, erode grassroots support, and threaten the APC’s credibility and electoral success in the area.

They urged the party leadership to uphold internal democracy and respect the will of the people, stressing that any attempt to force a candidate on the party risks provoking unrest and disenchantment among loyal members.

“Yaba LCDA is not a private estate to be passed from father to son,” the leaders wrote, stressing that Adefuye lacks the political roots and community involvement in Yaba to justify his candidacy.

Among the reasons cited for the opposition were Adefuye’s prior political engagement in Shomolu/Bariga, his recent reappointment to the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) as a representative of Shomolu/Bariga, and his lack of permanent residence or verifiable community involvement in Yaba.

The leaders also argued that qualified and long-standing APC members in Yaba, some with over 30 years of community service, have signalled interest in the position and should not be sidelined for an outsider.

They further reminded Senator Adefuye of his 2019 stance when he opposed a candidate with maternal ties to Shomolu, insisting he contest in his paternal base, calling for similar consistency now.

The letter urged the party’s leadership to urgently intervene and halt what they termed “an external imposition,” warning that failure to do so could have damaging consequences on the party’s unity and prospects in future elections.
