Abuja, Lagos likely Al Qaeda targets – Safety expert

The president of the Association of Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria (AISSON), Dr. Ona Ekhomu, has warned that an attack from terror group, Al Qaeda, is imminent in Nigeria.

Ekhomu, in a statement yesterday, said that the recent wave of terrorist attacks in West Africa showed that Nigeria was the probable next target.

“The most likely cities are Abuja or Lagos,” he added.

The security expert said that intelligence analysis conducted by the School of Management and Security, Lagos, from open source materials on the current phase of Jihad mounted by Al Qaeda on West African nations, showed that “Nigeria was in the next logical target for an active shooter attack by a six-man team of terrorists.”

“The odds are in the favour of the terrorists to cause mass deaths in these attacks,” Ekhomu added, and advised the government and corporate security executives to take urgent proactive steps in preventing the attack.

He said: “I urge the government to increase police visibility and also inject plain clothes police assets into high risk facilities.

“The Al Qaeda threat is more serious than the Boko Haram threat and it is hoped that the government and corporate security will take this threat more seriously and act to prevent spectacular attacks against soft and unprepared targets.”

  • Queen’s College girls protest alleged sexual harassment

Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS3) students of Queen’s College, Yaba abandoned their mock examination on Monday to protest the allegation of sexual harassment leveled against one of their teachers, Mr Olaseni Oshifala.

While they put pressure on their teachers to let them out of the school gate, another group of protesters, who claimed to have been taught by Oshifala, stood outside the premises, condemning the allegations as falsehood.

The sexual assault story was first published online by Olorisupergal.com, a blog run by Tosin Ajibade, and became viral over the weekend.

In the piece, one Chinenye Okoye, mother of the JSS 2 pupil said to have been abused, claimed that the girl was molested by a drunken Oshifala when she left her hostel to relieve herself at night.  The story also claimed that, Oshifala, who teaches Integrated Science, was being protected by one of the vice principals, Mrs Kayode, who allegedly told Chinenye that he was untouchable.

During Monday’s protest, the pupils, workers and Chairman, Parents/Teachers Association, Mrs Beatrice Akhetuamen, denied the claims.

As a result of the agitation, the Biology paper for the Southwest Zonal Mock examination organised in preparation for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) was delayed.  The girls, bore placards that read: “No Mother, No child, No Case!”, “Haters at work, free Mr Seni”, “No Seni, no A’s”, “He didn’t do it,” “It is a set up”, as they chanted “No Seni, no biology”.

All efforts by the teachers to send them back failed as they started chanting “open the gate.” They eventually went back to write their examination after a call made by a director in the Ministry, referred to as Mrs. Madueke, who asked to speak with the Head Girl, Angel Tony-Ativie, to prevail on her classmates to end the protest.

In an interview, Angel said the claims were baseless.

“This is a very untrue allegation against our Biology teacher; because most of the facts are baseless.  Mr Oshifala does not live in the boarding house; he is not an Integrated Science teacher; he teachers biology to SS1-SS3.  I have known him for six years; he has taught me for three years. He is our chief maintenance officer so the only time he is able to move to the boarding house, with the permission of the principal, is to check if the facilities are functioning.  He leaves the boarding house around 9 or 10pm.

Another pupil, Unoma Omenyi, President of the Students’ Representative Council, said the story was a maliciously generated to create bad publicity for the school.

“This is our teacher; this is someone that taught us for three good years.  We have known this man since JSS1 and we know he is not capable of something like this.  Every Saturday we have Biology lessons; this is why Queen’s College exists because we can proudly say we can write Biology and have A1 in WAEC.

“I believe this is a publicity stunt to bring down the image of the school and the image of our respected teachers.  I just want to say they should leave our school and our teacher alone,” she said.

Unoma added that it was unfair to crucify Oshifala when those accusing him have failed to come forward.

“There is no girl; there is no evidence against him.  Because nobody has come up to say, ‘oh, I was raped’, ‘oh, I was molested.’ If there is no girl, there is no mother, then why are we accusing a man falsely when there is no evidence against him?,” she asked.

On her part, the PTA Chairman, Mrs. Akhetuamen, said Oshifala may have been targeted because of his track record of working successfully with many principals of the school.

She also said she made repeated calls to the number said to be owned by Chinenye but got no response.  However, when she used the App, TrueCaller, the number was identified to be owned by someone called Sola Salisu.

However, when some journalists called the number, one woman, who said her name was Tope, picked the call (she was identified by TrueCaller on another phone as “Toyin Flask”).  She said she had no relationship with Queen’s College and had no daughter studying there.

Mrs. Akhetuamen said a committee has been set up to investigate the issue.  She declined claims that the PTA or the college management was not responsive.

She said: “The attention of the Parents Teachers Association has been drawn to online reports of sexual harassment said to have taken place at Queens College, Yaba, Lagos.  Upon hearing the reports, the school authorities swung into action even though we are yet to receive any official report, oral or written from any parent or student to that effect,” she said.

Two killed, 100 shanties burnt in Lagos fire

Two persons have died in an early morning fire incident which razed over 100 shanties in Kuramo, near Lekki in Lagos.

The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasak Fadipe told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the burnt bodies of a man and a woman were recovered at the scene.

According to him, “The shanties spread to about four plots of land. We got information that the fire started at about 3.15 a.m.

“Information we got was that a young lady was cooking in one of the shanties and there was a fuel container nearby, which ignited the fire and spread to other parts.

“It took us about four hours to put out the fire. My men did not know there was anybody inside while they were fighting the fire.

“We met the man and woman in two different locations roasted after we finally put out the fire,’’ Fadipe said.

The director said that the corpses were handed over to police officers from Ilason Division, who later took them to the mortuary

  • Lagos to organise religious conference

    Lagos to organise religious conference

The Lagos State government will in July organise an inter-religious conference to foster unity, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said at the weekend.

The governor, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Mrs. Grace Oladimeji, said his administration was determined to promote religious harmony.

He spoke at the 20th Convention Annual Anniversary of the Overcomers Pentecostal Prayer Ministry, with the theme: ‘God of Abraham’, held at the church auditorium in Abule-Egba, Lagos.

Ambode said the National Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) meets regularly to promote unity and understanding between Christians and Muslims.

He added: “This is why there is peace between Christians and Muslims in this state.”

The governor hailed Dr. Sam Ogedengbe for weathering the storm since establishing the church 20 years ago.

He said Ogedengbe; the senior special assistant to ex-Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola on Religion (Christian) should be praised for promoting unity.

Ogedengbe, the national president of the All Christian Leaders & Ministers’ Forum (ACLMF), thanked those who stood by him since the establishment of the church.

Ambode’s Chief of Staff Olukunle Ojo and Senator Gbenga Ashafa were some of the awardees at the event.

  • Lagos offers Falomo Shopping Complex, others to investors

Lagos offers Falomo Shopping Complex, others to investors

he Lagos State government yesterday said it would partner with suitable entities on a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) basis to develop and deliver wide-range of facilities in the state.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, said in a statement in Lagos that it was in continuation of the government’s commitment to urban development and expansion of business opportunities.

The statement said the facilities included residential apartments, shopping and business malls, recreation parks, hotels, theme parks, zoos, car parks and other facilities that would add to modern city lifestyle.

It said the idea was conceived to provide Lagos with world-class residential, business, recreational and other facilities that would measure up to what was obtainable in other mega cities of the world.

The statement disclosed that the facilities include the former Falomo Complex.

“The government is seeking proposals under PPP on how the site can be redeveloped into a world-class residential condominium complex with the full complement of lifestyle-enhancing facilities and complete communities’ direction strategy.

“The site is to be developed as a low density, mixed use residential facility that would include the integration of the multi-use nature of the area.

“Also, under the PPP redevelopment programme, the government has made available lands in various locations across the state on which it intends that malls, hotels and other lifestyle facilities would be established.

“The areas include Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, Badagry, Ikorodu, Ojokoro, Gbagada, Oshodi and Amuwo-Odofin,’’ it quoted Ayorinde as saying.

It added that the government was also interested in having a complete make-over of the CMS Marina axis to bring it up to standard comparable to similar choice locations in the world.

It said with the planned inauguration of the Blue Line of the Lagos light rail project in December, the government intended to redevelop the entire stretch of the Marina starting from the Apongbon end to the NECOM House end of the Marina.

  • Leave Lagos, govt tells beggars

Lagos State Government yesterday told beggars to leave the metropolis in their own interest.

Commissioner of Youth and Social Development Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf said the government would take drastic action against those who did not leave on their own.

She said there was an ongoing campaign against the menace of street begging on radio stations to sensitise people on the need to stop it.

Mrs Akinbile-Yussuf urged residents to stop giving alms to beggars in order to discourage them, saying: “We have been campaigning against street begging on radio since January. The campaign will run for three months following which the state government will take more drastic actions against perpetrators because there is anti-begging law in the state.

“What we are also saying is that people should stop giving alms to beggars on the streets because many of them are not beggars in the real sense of it. Many street beggars have been discovered to engage in criminal activities and hard drugs.”

  • Lagos repairs 40-year-old Gowon Estate roads

The Lagos State Government has begun road repair in Gowon Estate, a Federal Housing Estate built about 40 years ago in Egbeda.

The residents described it as first of its kind as successive governments had abandoned the area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the rehabilitation, which started early this month, is being carried out through the Alimosho Local Government/Mosan Okunola Local Council Development Area.

A NAN correspondent reports that the work which has a 16-week completion schedule, is being carried out on one of the estate’s major access roads, 41 Road.

NAN reports that the kerbs, this is, the concrete pavement and the coal tar have been excavated.

Chairman of the estate’s Community Development Association (CDA) Mr Nathaniel Okoro told NAN that the residents were happy with the government’s gesture.

Okoro expressed hope that it would be the beginning of good things to come to the estate after about 40 years of its construction.

“We want to believe this is the beginning of good things to come because there are so many other roads that are bad in this estate.

“While we express our joy for the reconstruction of 41 Road, we pray that other roads will receive due attention. These are 4th and 5th Avenues, 3rd, 411, 401 and 1st Avenue,’’ Okoro said.

The CDA chairman noted that the community was not informed of the specification or scope of the work to be done by the contractors,

    Wetland Construction Nigeria Ltd.

“This will make it difficult for the community to check whether the work is according to specification or not.

“Secondly, we don’t know if there will be walkways, because if there will be, the contractors will need the community’s co-operation to inform those who had built shops around the road to shift backwards.

“They could also be asked to remove them from the sides of the road so that they will do their work.

“We don’t know what plans they have for the median, whether there will be beautification; if there will be beautification, there will be need to tell the residents not to setup businesses on it.

A top official at the Engineering Department of the council, who preferred not to be named, told NAN that the drainage  systems in the area were being worked on.

The official noted the estate’s drainage system was underground, saying that was why the ongoing work was not noticeable.

According to the official, the drainage must first be cleared before the actual reconstruction can start.

The official decried the extent to which the drainage system was  blocked with disused tyres and other non-biodegradable refuse.

“It is so bad and unfortunate for some residents to turn the drainage system into refuse dump; our men have been working underground for some weeks clearing the refuse.

“If the refuse is not cleared and the drainage system properly  opened, the reconstruction cannot commence.

“The recent rainfall testifies to the fact that the drainage has been worked  on as there was no flood in the area, unlike when the drainage was blocked,’’ the official said.

  • Lagos gets N5bn FDI in three months

Lagos gets N5bn FDI in three months

Lagos State government has recorded over N5billion foreign direct investment (FDI) in the first quarter of 2016, Dr. Yakub Olajide Bashorun, Permanent Secretary, Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment has said.

Dr. Bashorun made this disclosure at the weekend during a one-day sensitisation of MDAs on mandate of Office of Overseas Affairs & Investment in Lagos.

Speaking on the investment profile of Lagos, the erstwhile Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operatives, said: “The investment projection for the state is very high. In the first quarter for instance, we have done about N5billion worth of investment into Lagos, creating hundreds of jobs for Lagosians.

“That is over 50 per cent of what has come in to the country this year alone.  So you can imagine what will still be done with this kind of sensitisation workshop with everybody on the same page, whether in agriculture, in power, in transportation, health, medical tourism, ICT, education, entertainment and tourism sectors. So these are areas that are huge.”

Continuing, he said: “We will continue to monitor with aftercare because it is not only enough to ensure that investment comes to Lagos we want to also ensure that investment is thriving. If they are doing very well how can they do even better? Can they open more branches? If they are not doing well is that something went wrong along the way? Is it in terms of implementation of agreement? There has to be somebody who is working out the interest of everybody and that is what we’re doing.”

Office of Overseas Affairs & Investment, otherwise known as Lagos Global is a new parastatal was established in last May at the inception of the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode administration.

While explaining the core mandate of the agency, Prof. Ademola Abass, Special Adviser, Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment, in a presentation titled: ‘Promoting FDI in Lagos: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,’ said: “We’re in the investment arm of the Lagos state government. Since the creation of this office, I can tell you they are in hundreds and if the trend continues with what we have seen I will be talking in terms of thousands. But again, make no mistake, not all proposals will come to fruition.  And you do not know the one which will come to fruition before you have dealt with it. So we have hundred proposals may it is going to be about five or six that would give you the traction that you need. And you may have just one proposal after over two months that would be a very major proposal. So you cannot really calibrate it but the important thing is that it is huge.”

The former university don, who spoke on plans by the state government to turnaround the fortunes of the state said: “Lagos needs a lot of infrastructural development, especially with our transportation. For a city of 22 million people you cannot rely on a mono transport system. One of the things we’re trying to do in Lagos is to take the ferry service a lot more serious than we have always done. So we’re looking into investment in the transportation area. This has become inevitable because the oil revenue has been nose-diving. We’re trying to look into and develop our agricultural resources. In terms of health we want to make sure we develop our hospital infrastructural to be able to stop our people from going to spend millions on medical tourism. We want to invest on energy. Lagos today is need of about 4, 000 megawatts to function but we have just around 1, 000 mega watts. So we have less than one quarter. So these are the key sectors we’re interested in Lagos state.”

On measures to encourage investment drive, Prof. Abass said: “There are many incentives. We have tax holidays for people. Obviously we’re also trying to cut down the time it takes to set up. We going recognising pioneer status and the government is also looking at using land as equity for those who may require land. Lagos has unique advantages.

“We have a population of almost 22million. We’re not just giving them benefits but we’re asking our investors to look at our unique advantages that Lagos actually offers them. In terms of population, it’s 22million, almost 5million of which is in the middle class. That is a huge purchasing power for whatever investment you have in Lagos state. And you’re talking about a Lagos state that is today the fifth largest economy in Africa, talking about $135billion GDP, which is 42 countries in Africa as a whole.  So it’s not just giving investors benefits but we also helping them to take advantage when you come to Lagos state.”

  • Lagos completes Ile-Epo road rehabilitation

    Lagos completes Ile-Epo road rehabilitation

The Lagos State government is finally set to deliver the newly rehabilitated Ile-Epo road along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway for public use.

This is coming ahead of the earlier scheduled April deadline.

The project is expected to reduce the perennial traffic gridlock on the ever busy Federal Road, which is a major link between Lagos and Ogun States.

It will be recalled that the project was embarked upon by the state government following several public outcry on the need to fix the road in the general interest of the masses irrespective of its status as a federal government road.

The state government subsequently awarded the rehabilitation project in September last year with the projection to complete work in April 2016.

The General Manager of Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC), Mr. Ayotunde Sodeinde, while monitoring the progress work of the project yesterday, expressed satisfaction on the quality and level of execution, saying, “the job is over 90 percent done.”

Sodeinde explained to journalists that the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, directed that the project be accelerated without compromising the standard and quality in order to ease movement of vehicular and human activities, which had been impeded for years due to the bad portion of the road.

He said: “The drainage channel has been completed and the road will be completed next week.”

Sodeinde, however, said the drainage channel would not be covered so as to aid easy cleaning considering the drain stuffing habit of the traders.
