Health Commissioner Jide Idris said samples of the well water analysed at the Drug Quality Control laboratory yielded several pathogens, which are indications that the water was not safe for human consumption.

According to the commissioner, his ministry conducted house-to-house search in which 34 children were detected to have Febrille rash illnesses.

  • Lagos Rotary holds free blood screening at Sandgrosse Market

In continuation of its activities for the Rotary Year 2015/2016, the Lagos Rotary Club recently carried out free blood screening for market women and men at the Sandgrosse Market, Obalende, Lagos. The screening was carried out by certified professionals under the supervision of officials of the club, led by its president, Larry Agose.

In the end, those whose blood pressures were high were given referrals and also counselled on how to manage their blood pressures.

The market women and men were impressed with the initiative by Rotary as many of them felt they hitherto believed nobody would count them worthy of such initiative.

Speaking to The Nation after the event, Agose explained that during a Rotary year, one theme is tied to each month under which humanitarian activities are carried out. He said the visit to the Sandgrosse market to give free blood screening to market men and women was part of the humanitarian initiative for the month under the theme, disease prevention and control.

He disclosed that as part of the initiative for December, they held autistic children to an end of the year party at Campus Square, also in Lagos, while they also visited the Regina Mundi Catholic Church, Mushin, Lagos, where they hosted old people in the church. He said his club had to lead the way as the oldest Rotary club in the country.

“As you may know, Rotary is a world-wide humanitarian organisation with over 4.2 million members worldwide and 34,000 clubs. Rotary Club of Lagos is one of those 34,000 clubs and our District, 9110, has 82 clubs and we are the oldest surviving club in the country. The first one was Kano but no more functioning. This year we are 55 years old.”

Agose said the month of December was for disease prevention and control and the month of January of humanitarian service. He said the disease prevention and control had spilled to this month, hence the free blood screening exercise. He said the disease prevention and control actually started in October when the club donated an incubator to General Hospital at Ifako Ijaye in Lagos. He explained that the hosting of elderly people at Regina Mundi Catholic Church, where drugs and food items were donated to them, was also part of the disease prevention and control.

The club also bought inverters for the ophthalmology department of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital while they also did economic empowerment for small scale traders by giving them loans free of interest. He explained that they chose Obalende because of what he termed “needs assessment”. He said they had to look at what is needed in certain areas and Sandgrosse market in Obalende is very strategic, hence the decision to do the free blood screening exercise for them there.

Police raid P-Square’s Lagos residence over N8m breach of contract

hardly had the dust over the rift between Peter of Psquare and his brothers; Paul and Jude settled when the iconic music family is faced with another messy , bothering on alleged breach of contract.

Residents of Omole Estate woke up Friday morning to the invasion of the Square Villa, home of Psquare, by policemen, purportedly carrying out a court order to reclaim about N8million said to have been paid to Psquare for a show they eventually turned down.

A leader of the delegation who spoke exclusively to NET said they were carrying out an order passed by the Ikeja High Court, Lagos. “Psquare were paid over 8million Naira for a show and they didn’t show up for the show. Our job here is to enforce the court injunction and retrieve the cash. Right now they say they are trying to transfer the money and that’s why we are waiting.”

Although the group neither showed the court injunction to the NET correspondent nor revealed the name of the client, an eye witness said the singers appeared beaten by the situation which attracted a mammoth to their residence.

Paul was seen driving out of the Sqaure Ville in a tinted BMW, refusing to speak to anyone. There were indications the singer was going to sort out the refund rather than allow further molestation.

Recall that few days ago, Peter started a Twitter rant, calling it quits with their elder brother and manager, Jude. The matter appeared to subside after Paul took sides with Jude.

Peter had gone ahead to reveal more bitter secrets, including how Jude hijacked reggae star, Cynthia Morgan from him.

  • Lagos gets another bite through Ikorodu United, MFM

With anticipation building for the kick off of 2015/2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) this weekend, two newly promoted clubs from Lagos State Ikorodu United FC and MFM FC are prepared to pull their weight among the best clubs in the country.

Npfl.ng reports that Ikorodu United will have its first taste of Premier League football this season when they host Abia Warriors at Onikan Stadium on Sunday while MFM FC is away to Nasarawa United same day.

The clubs came from different backgrounds before gaining promotion to Nigeria’s elite league at the end of last season but they have brought back top league games and excitement to Lagos, the Center of Excellence, where football fanatics have missed premier league actions for over 22 years. Now the fans are chanting, ‘the League has come home’.

Ikorodu United FC, which was founded in December 2014 under the chairmanship of Adewunmi Ogunsanya, is among the few clubs that are privately-owned in Nigeria.

Belgian coach, Maurice Cooreman tutored Ikorodu United to secure promotion to the top flight after just a season in the Nigeria National League (NNL) but the tactician has since departed for Akwa United, leaving ex-international Edema Benson to carry on as Chief Coach.

In terms of playing staff, npfl.ng gathered that Ikorodu United management has confidently retained the bulk of the squad from last season including striker Francis Shedrack whose decisive goal in their last game against Ekiti United earned them a promotion ticket.

Youngsters such as defender Kabiru from 36 Lion FC, Ebiye who was signed from Bethel FC and the others offer further encouragement that the Ikorodu side seems well placed to survive in the Premier League.

Club boss Ogunsanya, while speaking on his club’s preparedness for the season, said Ikorodu United “is ready to surprise other participants of the professional football league”.

As part of plans to ensure the club performs well, the management has introduced some innovations to rebrand club football in the country. Already, GOtv Nigeria has joined as sponsor for the new season and the club is doing a lot in mechandizing and venue packaging as well.

“Top on our management’s plans is to woo back the Lagos spectators to come out and watch our games. We want to create an avenue where the stadium will be filled by 12 noon for a match scheduled for 4.00 pm.”

Coach Edema Benson is not the boastful type but the former international believes Ikorodu United will be a force to reckon with among the NPFL teams this season, considering their traditional style of keeping the ball, passing accuracy and scoring stunning goals.

Describing the two industries as fertile ground for creating employment and fully engaging the youths for better future, Ambode added that his government will do everything possible to maximize the gains of available talents in the state even as he challenged the youths especially those involved in sports to aspire to greater heights and write their names in gold.

The governor was speaking Thursday at the commissioning of Ikeja Golf Club house. The governor who was represented at the well attended event by Chairman Lagos state Sports Commission Deji Tinubu expressed hope that the club will continue to play a major role in identifying golfers and those who will ultimately toe the line of Tiger Woods and other great golfers.

In his reaction, Club captain Air Commodore Tokunbo Ajomale (rtd) informed the gathering that Ikeja golf club is not only playing  a leading role in promoting ecological balance in the state, but  also serves as a tourist attraction for sports men and women, and as a platform for corporate social interaction.

He thanked the government for bankrolling the cost of reconstruction, while promising on behalf of the club members to put the new edifice into good use.

“I want to use this opportunity to express our profound appreciation to the governor and the state government for their support. We shall forever remain grateful and we promise to put the building into good use,” he said.

The reconstruction of the club house started in 2012 under former governor and current Minister of Power, Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola who contracted Messrs Arem Global for the job.
