Foundation empowers local fashion entrepreneurs at free business workshop in Lagos

No fewer than eight women have benefited from a three-day Fashion Business Workshop organized by Virtues Life Foundation in Ojota, Lagos.

The Fashion Master Class covered key business strategies, including business management, marketing, branding, and client relations.

Led by experienced professionals from the fashion industry, the instructors shared practical insights from their own journeys, offering participants new perspectives for growing their businesses.

Speaking at the event, Rev. Alexander Faranpojo, Founder of Virtues Life Foundation, explained that the program was designed to uplift the community and help participants advance to the next level.

He highlighted the remarkable growth of Nigeria’s fashion industry, emphasizing its potential as a driver for local economic development.

The workshop, he added, aimed to equip fashion professionals with practical business skills and industry knowledge to overcome challenges in their ventures.

According to him, the event was motivated by a desire to give back to the community and help those who, despite years in the industry, have not seen significant growth or return on their investments.

“Our key objective of the workshop was to elevate the fashion businesses of the participants, enabling them to compete more effectively in the marketplace”.

Faranpojo emphasized the need to support those who have been in the fashion industry for years but are still struggling to make a mark.

“We hear of new names doing well, and our goal is to empower the common man, those who are not seeing the value for their efforts,” he said.

Co-pastor of the foundation, Pastor Funmilayo Faranpojo, added that the workshop was offered free of charge, with all the instructors offering their expertise on a pro bono basis.

She emphasized that this was in line with the foundation’s commitment to community development and giving back without expecting financial returns.

“We are focused on identifying and empowering the most talented and skillful small business owners in the fashion sector through knowledge sharing, mentorship, networking, and providing them with the necessary support systems to scale their businesses,” she said.

One of the facilitators, Folakemi Ode, Managing Director of BlinkzHub, spoke passionately about the importance of developing fashion education and encouraging government investment in the industry.

Despite being part of the faculty, Udi remarked that the workshop was insightful for her as well.

“It opened my eyes to how much more I can offer through teaching and sharing the experience I’ve gained over the years,” she said.

During her session, Ode guided participants through essential steps for building a successful fashion business, including honing their craft, setting up a business, managing customer relations, and maintaining quality control.                                                                                            She also underscored the importance of formal fashion education, which should go beyond practical skills like cutting and sewing to include areas like pattern drafting, illustration, and accessory design.

“There’s much more to fashion than just cutting and sewing by the roadside,” Ode, said.

She advocated for comprehensive training programs that cover additional aspects of fashion, such as bag-making, shoe-making, and jewelry design.

Furthermore, she called for fashion design to be included in university curricula, likening it to fine arts programs, which allow students to specialize and master their craft over time.

Outrage as teenager fleeing police brutality falls, dies in Lagos canal

The death of a 17-year-old boy, Bidemi, alleged to have fallen into a canal while fleeing from police brutality in Lagos has sparked public outrage.

Bidemi allegedly met his untimely death on October 17, at the Federal Bus Stop, Ipaja, Ayobo area of Lagos State.

The incident which happened barely three days to the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS violence of October 2020 has further heightened calls for police reforms among Nigerians.

Information available on social media alleged that Bidemi was stopped by police officers in mufti, who accused him of being a “Yahoo boy” due to his tattoos.

Despite Bidemi’s insistence that he was not a “Yahoo boy,” the police allegedly brutalised him, cocked their guns, and chased him.

In a desperate bid to escape, Bidemi ran and fell into the canal. His body was later recovered and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was diagnosed with several head injuries and placed on oxygen.

Sadly, Bidemi succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Friday.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the policemen seeing that the victim had fallen into the canal, took his money and his footwear and fled the scene when people started raising alarm.

Two of the policemen were said to have been identified and detained at the Area M headquarters in Idimu.

Netizens who condemned the incident appealed to the government and police high command to ensure justice for the deceased.

Efforts to get a reaction from the Lagos Police Command were not successful at the time of this report.

  • Lagos urges low land communities to relocate over Oyan dam release

Lagos urges low land communities to relocate over Oyan dam release

The Lagos State Government has alerted residents and property owners at the Ogun River Banks to prepare for relocation as the Ogun Osun River Basin development begins staggered release of water from Oyan Dam.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab, during a media briefing, said the notification was important to maintain the sanctity of the dam and its socio-economic implications for Lagos State.

He said it was crucial to understand that the dam’s annual operations are informed by real-time hydrological data, rainfall predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and flood outlooks from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

These sources, he said, guide the water release decisions to ensure flood control and integrity of the dam.

Wahab also noted that the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) operates the Dam in strict compliance with safety protocols to prevent structural damage and mitigate flood risks.

The commissioner added that a detailed operational report of OORBDA said the total water released from the dam as of October 12 stands at 1,484.2 million cubic meters (mcm), which remains below the average synthesised annual flow volume of 1,770 mcm.

He stressed that although rainfall across the Oyan River catchment area has been significant, with a cumulative 984.1 mm recorded this year, ‘it remains lower than last year’s 1,540.8 mm and is within safe operational levels’.

Wahab explained that the dam is equipped with four radial gates capable of releasing up to 2,271 cubic meters per second (m³/s) during peak periods, and the current releases are measured at 208 m³/s, with only two gates opened at 12 per cent capacity each, ensuring controlled and steady discharge.

Read Also: Gitex Nigeria: Lagos ready to host the world, says Hamzat

According to him, 62.1 per cent of the dam’s flood control capacity remains intact, with the Dam not under any imminent threat of releasing excess water beyond safe limits. This, he noted, has been made possible through the state’s collaboration with OORBDA.

He said: “The government fully recognises the challenge faced by residents in affected communities which include Kara, Mile 12, Agiliti, Ikosi Ketu, Owode, Ajegunle, and Odo-Ogun as reported.

“However, I want to emphasise that while the flooding experienced in these areas has often been attributed solely to water released from the Oyan Dam, this is not entirely the case. In reality, the downstream section of the Ogun River is influenced by a complex network of over 52 tributaries, all of which converge and contribute to rising water levels in the affected areas.

“These tributaries, combined with rain-induced run-off, significantly exacerbate the flood situation. This is a critical point to consider when addressing flood management strategies for this region.

“In an effort to reduce the flood risks and ensure free flow of water within the Ogun River system, the OORBDA recently kicked-off dredging of the Ogun River downstream from the Ikorodu to Isheri axis (Ajelogo, Owode-Elede, Ajegunle, and under deck-on-pile of Itowolo Bridge) for the water released on September 13, 2024.

“Some right-of-ways along the catchment areas were protected and restored. The dredging was a proactive measure to deepen the river channel and increase its capacity to convey water, thereby reducing the likelihood of flooding during high inflow periods.”

The commissioner also reiterated that the government is determined to maintain the long-established synergy and partnership with OORBDA which has continued to ensure controlled and monitored systematic release of water from Oyan Dam to prevent flooding of the downstream communities.

Wahab also said the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang (EFAG) has been consistently de-silting and working on secondary collectors and conduits, to enable them discharge efficiently and act as retention basins as part of statewide measures to prevent flooding.

He appealed to Lagosians to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorised places, throwing pet bottles on the roads, clogging of drains with silt or construction materials, erecting building structures within and around drainage Right of Ways/setbacks, as well as discharging human waste into drains/canals.

  • Gitex Nigeria: Lagos ready to host the world, says Hamzat

Gitex Nigeria: Lagos ready to host the world, says Hamzat

Lagos State deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has expressed the government’s readiness to host the GITEX Nigeria conference in September 2025.

He said the government and indeed the entire technology ecosystem would be very receptive to the coming of the global tech show to the country, ‘especially Lagos, where tech and innovation have found a good ground in Africa’.

Hamzat spoke during a meeting with Trixie LohMirmand, the Chief Executive Officer of Kaoun International, in the Lagos Pavilion at the ongoing GITEX 2024 in Dubai, UAE.

“There could not have been a better time for the tech world to make its presence felt in Africa, particularly Nigeria, than now when the country is experiencing an upsurge in the growth of technology and innovation talent”, Hamzat noted.

According to him, the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration is deliberate in its decision to make technology the driving force behind more of the state’s development programmes.

He said: “Lagos, for example, holds the ‘Art of Technology (AoT) conference which is now in its fifth year. With the AoT, a lot of young entrepreneurs in the IT and innovation space have been discovered, and many of them now run as businesses, with its attendant effect on our economy and the entire ecosystem.

“Another great thing that we’ve discovered is that the number of young entrepreneurs in Lagos State is unbelievable. And, like you said, we can’t bring everybody here to Dubai. So, bringing GITEX to Lagos is very good; it will allow even other countries to see what is possible because the news that we get out there is not real.”

The deputy governor added that the young innovators in Lagos are already creating real solutions, saying their creations are solving real-life problems and are helping their immediate families, friends, and communities.

“There are 10 and 12-year-olds and all they do is coding because they want to help their parents sell their products and services. We are therefore more than happy to host an event of this nature that would help to connect these talents that we have in abundance to the countless opportunities out here.

“We have pockets of knowledge in our state. The question for us is how do we explain it, how do we actually make it out there, and then allow people to benefit? The creators also need to benefit from their thinking. So, my hope is that GITEX Nigeria can do that for us when you are able to bring all these young people from different areas.

“I know it is technology, but how do we take it to entertainment? Entertainment is big in Nigeria; the creative industry is the next oil as far as we are concerned, and that is why we are investing heavily in that sector,” Hamzat said.

LohMirmand said: “Technology is a necessity and not a luxury, and the world needs it for survival.”

According to her, the last time she visited Nigeria, she and her team saw young Nigerians who ‘sat in a small room with systems on their laps doing great things’.

LohMirmand, whose company organises GITEX Global, said they are committed to discovering new partners and connecting Nigeria to untapped opportunities in the technology space.

She said: “That is our role. We will need a lot of support from your government in terms of logistics and security for us to organise a good show in Lagos, Nigeria.”

GITEX, the biggest technology showpiece in the world, connects people with industry leaders from big tech, global governments, innovative startups, expert investors, and corporate buyers. It is a computer expo held annually at the Dubai World Trade Center in the United Arab Emirates.

The event underpins the rapid technology-driven transformations, investments, and projects shaping the economies of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Cholera kills couple, 18 others in Lagos, Niger

    • Poor hygiene cause of outbreak, says minister

Cholera outbreaks have killed 20 persons in Lagos and Niger states in the past week.

In Lagos, a couple died on Sunday at the Isolo General Hospital, after contracting the disease.

Mr. Emeto and his wife, Augustina, their daughter and a neighbour were allegedly rushed to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital in the wee hours of Sunday.

Besides the couple, another man and a three-year-old were said to have died aslo in Isolo area of Lagos, making four deaths.

It was gathered that the victims started stooling, vomiting and exhibiting other symptoms after eating African salad, popularly called Abacha.

The Nation reported yesterday that hospitals on Ago Palace Way in Okota, Isolo, and environs were overfilled with cholera patients, an upsurge that started since October 9.

A three-year-old died at the weekend in one of the hospitals on Ago Palace Way; a mother and her three children were also brought in unconscious to another private facility.

All the cases, sources said, were traceable to the consumption of the staple at Cele Bus Stop in the area.

Checks by our correspondent indicated that the Abacha seller at the bus stop had also been a contact point whenever there was a cholera outbreak in the state.

Abacha is a local delicacy made from fermented cassava and garnished with other ingredients like oil bean seeds, palm oil, potash, and garden eggs. However, there have been concerns about the hygiene condition during its preparation and at the point of sale.

The deaths of the Emetos, who were described as devoted Catholics, rattled fellow parishioners at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Isolo.

The residents have been advised to steer clear of the staple.

One of the voice notes shared by a man, identified simply as Romanus, confirmed the couple’s death.

He said: “Around 1 a.m (on Sunday), we got a call that we lost one of our brothers (Emeto). The report was that his wife and daughter were vomiting and stooling and he took them to the hospital.

“On getting to the hospital, he also started to stool and vomit. It was discovered that they ate Abacha on Saturday (said to have been) bought from a woman at Cele Bus Stop. The man died first and the body has been taken to the village.

    “The daughter was treated.”

Another church member, who announced Mrs. Emeto’s death on Monday, said a neighbour who joined Mrs. Emeto in eating the staple also started to stool and vomit.

In Niger State, 16 persons have died out of the 165 recorded cases across the state, representing nine per cent mortality rate.

The Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Dangana Ibrahim, announced the deaths in Minna, the state capital.

The commissioner said 145 patients had been treated and discharged from various hospitals.

“To prevent further spread, contingency measures have been implemented, including the distribution of essential medical supplies to affected areas and health facilities,” he said.

Ibrahim listed affected local government areas as Paiko, Gurara, Suleja, Bosso, and Katcha, saying the disease surveillance system had been activated.

The commissioner also said the government had begun active contact tracing and case management in all affected communities.

Also, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, attributed poor hygiene to cholera outbreaks.

Speaking at the Global Hand-washing Day in Abuja, the minister emphasised that inadequate sanitation and hand-washing habits put public health at serious risk.

He said: “Hand-washing with soap remains the first line of defence against outbreaks and reducing the spread of waterborne diseases.”

The minister called for accelerated investment in hygiene infrastructure in homes, schools, and public spaces to close existing gaps.

According to him, better hygiene practices are essential to improving health outcomes, reducing school absenteeism, and boosting productivity.

BREAKING: Lagos pegs minimum wage at N85,000 for workers

Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has disclosed that the State plans to pay workers a minimum wage of N85,000, which is N15,000 higher than the N70,000 approved by the Federal Government in July.

Sanwo-Olu announced this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.

The Governor said the State is not paying N85,000 to compete with others but because it has the capacity to do so.

“I am glad to let you know that the minimum wage for Lagos which we conversed and discussed with our union is N85,000 today,” Sanwo-Olu said on the programme.

“It is not a competition, so I am not going to say we are paying more than some other people, it is a function of affordability and it is a function of capacity, but we know too well that when people live in Lagos, Lagos has a premium in terms of even the cost of living, we are fully aware.”

President Bola Tinubu signed the new N70,000 minimum wage bill into law in July, ending months of deliberations between government representatives, labour unions and the private sector.

  • 15 dead, five injured in Lagos, Ibadan road crashes

15 dead, five injured in Lagos, Ibadan road crashes

No fewer than 15 persons lost their lives while several others were injured in road accidents in Lagos and Ibadan.

In Ibadan yesterday, the accident involved a trailer conveying tiles and a lorry loaded with soft drinks at Oke Eleshin, Amuloko on the Akanran Road, Ibadan.

Among the injured was a pupil, whose mother reportedly died in the crash.

Four of the injured, who were conveyed to the Amuloko City Hospital nearby, included two primary school pupils who were treated as outpatients while two with severe injuries had been admitted.

The dead were conveyed to another hospital.

According to a staff member of the Oyo Road Transport Maintenance Agency (OYRTMA), who spoke on a condition of anonymity at the scene, “The accident occured in the early hours of today (yesterday). It was caused by brake failure of the trailer that was descending the slope of the road.

In Lagos, nine persons were confirmed dead and others injured in separate incidents on Sunday.

Four of the victims were said to have died in a fire outbreak at a lounge in Ajegunle; three lost their lives during a multiple auto accident on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and the others were killed after a school’s fence collapsed at Ejigbo.

It was learnt that the fire occurred around 7:45am, at Baale Road, Olodi-Apapa.

The four victims who were burnt beyond recognition, were said to be staff members of the bar.

Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benjamin Hundeyin, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incidents

“Having lost control, it crushed a tricycle, popularly called Keke NAPEP. Another lorry carrying soft drinks, which was coming from behind it, tried to avoid hitting the trailer in front, and in the process crushed another Keke NAPEP. We learnt that six persons died while five persons sustained injuries. They have been conveyed away from here,” he said.

The accident caused a serious gridlock with passengers alighting and walking. Many have parked their vehicles by the road side pending when security operatives will clear the vehicles from the road. Aside from the two articulated vehicles and the two tricycles involved, two other cars were damaged in the multiple accident.

Sympathisers who were prevented from burning the vehicles blamed the drivers (who had escaped), claiming that the accident could have been minimised if the driver of the one vehicle that had brake failure had swerved into a ditch instead of facing the incoming tricycle.

Security operatives on ground included men of the Operation Burst, OYRTMA, Police, Road Safety, Amotekun, and local vigilantes.

Managing Director, Amuloko City Hospital, Dr. Raji Wale, said four patients were brought to his hospital.

He said: “The accident occured in the early hours of  today (yesterday). Six victims were brought here with varying degrees of injuries. Some were taken to other hospitals. We were able to absorb the ones brought here. Two have been treated as out-patient victims and they have been stabilised and they have left. Two kids have been treated and they are downstairs. One of them, I was told, was in Keke NAPEP with his mother. The mother died.

“The other two with severe injuries have been admitted and are being treated. They have been optimised and we are taking care of them.’’

Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Oyo State Command, Mrs. Rosemary Alo, confirmed the accident but said she would confirm when her men briefed her appropriately.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Adewale Osifeso, said they would give a report on the accident later.
