The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI) and other stakeholders, is set to observe the annual ‘Car Free Day’ on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

A statement from the State’s Transport Ministry noted that this year’s Car Free Day coincides with an increase in fuel prices, which has already led to a reduction in vehicle use across the city.

  • Stakeholders converge in Lagos to address urban sanitation crisis

Stakeholders converge in Lagos to address urban sanitation crisis

By Emmanuel Chidi-Maha, Victor Ganiyu, and Princess Iduh

The vibrant city of Lagos this week became a focal point for urgent discussions surrounding urban water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) at the Safely Managed Sanitation Conference, held on September 18-19, 2024. Organised by the USAID/Nigeria Lagos Urban Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (LUWASH) Activity in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, the event convened a diverse array of stakeholders dedicated to tackling the pressing sanitation challenges faced by the city’s over 21 million residents.

The LUWASH Activity is a five-year programme aimed at expanding and improving urban WASH service delivery and infrastructure throughout Lagos. With a vision of enhancing the availability and sustainable management of safe, climate-resilient water and sanitation services, LUWASH has been instrumental in fostering collaboration among government agencies, private sector players, and local organisations. Its mission is to strengthen governance, improve accountability, and bolster the financial and technical capabilities of both public utilities and private service providers.

At the conference, participants engaged in robust discussions focused on the urgent need for improved sanitation systems in a city grappling with rapid urbanisation and significant public health challenges. The conference served as a platform for stakeholders to share insights, strategies, and innovative solutions that could address the critical WASH issues threatening Lagos. From government officials to academics and community leaders, attendees represented a broad spectrum of perspectives, all united by the common goal of promoting better sanitation practices.

A key highlight of the conference was the emphasis on sustainable sanitation technologies. This initiative aimed to showcase cutting-edge solutions designed to improve urban sanitation systems. Participants explored advancements in wastewater treatment and eco-friendly stormwater management practices. A technology expert at one of the workshops stated, “Adopting these technologies is crucial for improving our sanitation systems. We need to transition to more efficient and environmentally friendly solutions that can withstand the pressures of urbanisation.” This sentiment was echoed throughout the conference as stakeholders discussed the potential for innovation to revolutionise sanitation in Lagos.

One of the primary objectives of the conference was to develop a comprehensive action plan for improving wastewater and stormwater management across the city. The discussions highlighted the critical role that effective governance and regulatory frameworks play in ensuring the success of sanitation initiatives. Experts stressed that without strong oversight and transparent financing mechanisms, the efforts to improve sanitation would struggle to yield meaningful results. A policy analyst remarked during a panel discussion, “We must strengthen our regulatory frameworks to ensure effective management of sanitation services. Without good governance, even the most innovative technologies will fail to deliver results.”

Understanding that community engagement is vital for the success of any sanitation initiative, the conference also prioritised grassroots participation. Workshops aimed at local residents and community organisations focused on empowering them to take ownership of their sanitation challenges. Participants discussed strategies for fostering a sense of collective responsibility, emphasising that engaged communities are more likely to support and sustain initiatives that improve their living conditions. A local leader who attended the conference stated, “The community’s role cannot be overstated. When residents are engaged, they feel a sense of pride and commitment to the solutions being implemented.”

Another significant aspect of the conference was its alignment with Nigeria’s national sanitation targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6, which aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. A representative from the Ministry of Water Resources expressed optimism about the potential impact of the conference, stating, “What we achieve here in Lagos can set a precedent for other urban centres across Nigeria. Our discussions have the potential to influence broader national and international efforts in sanitation.”

Throughout the event, LUWASH officials provided updates on ongoing projects aimed at improving urban WASH services in Lagos. These projects include the rehabilitation of five mini waterworks—Ajegunle, Badore, Ikoyi, Lekki, and Saka Tinubu—to enhance water production and accessibility across various communities. Additionally, LUWASH has been instrumental in assisting the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office in developing a five-year strategic plan to effectively manage wastewater.

A significant portion of the funding for these initiatives has come from LUWASH’s Capacity Building, Research, and Advocacy Fund (CAREVO Fund). Between May and July 2024, LUWASH awarded over $841,000 in grants to seven local organisations focused on enhancing the sustainability of community-based organisations (CBOs). This funding empowers these groups to expand their reach and deliver safely managed WASH services to more households, reinforcing the vital role of local communities in the overall success of sanitation initiatives. The importance of collaboration among various stakeholders was evident throughout the conference. The event facilitated the sharing of best practices and lessons learned from different contexts, allowing participants to explore innovative solutions that have been successful in other urban settings. This exchange of knowledge is crucial for developing tailored approaches that address the unique challenges faced by Lagos.

Lagos preaches environmental hygiene on World Clean-up Day

The Lagos state government has urged residents, market men and women, artisans, NGOs, and commercial establishments to prioritise environmental cleanliness to prevent diseases.

Special adviser on environment to the governor, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu made the appeal on Thursday, September 19, at the commemoration of the 2024 World Clean-up Day at Bada Community, Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area. He encouraged residents to continue with the exercise voluntarily. The event was themed ‘Make Room for Life’.

He described the event as a global exercise, saying residents should inculcate cleanliness and refrain from blaming the government when there is a flood.

“Good Sanitation practices are not an individual responsibility, but a collective responsibility for everyone to take action. Residents cannot continue to accuse the government whereas they continually dump their waste in drainages. This is why this event is a clarion call for all to embrace good sanitation habits.

“Dirty environments promote the spread of diseases such as diarrhea, malaria, typhoid, and so the government is doing this clean up to encourage residents to regular cleaning of their environment.”

  • Lagos partners Fed Govt, private sector on tourism development

Lagos partners Fed Govt, private sector on tourism development

The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Art, and Culture is partnering with the federal government and private sector to boost tourism and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the state.

Commissioner for Tourism, Art and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, stated this during a tour of some tourist sites in the state, including JK Randle, Freedom Park, National Museum, and Onikan House, among others.

According to her, the state is open to business development, as well as to promote tourism.

“Lagos is open to showcase its art and cultural heritage to investors,” she noted.

The commissioner also reiterated that the state is embedded with so much culture, saying ‘the time to show it is now. We will create that enabling environment for all businesses in Lagos to thrive’.

She added: “The government is also ready for youth development. We are ready for collaborations, and for our young people to thrive. If you look around us, you know that we have a demography of very young people who are waiting out there, seeking for us to hold up their hands, and we are ready for them now.”

“Director-General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Olugbile Holloway, said partnering with Lagos State on tourism development will help to ‘make the national museum a tourist destination in a wider ecosystem for cultural tourism’.

Holloway, who said the National Museum is a great heritage to Nigerians, added: “The collaboration with Lagos can make the state a tourist hub. It is obvious that with this handshake, the days when we say this is state or this is federal will be gone.

“As far as visitors are concerned, they do not have any business with the state or Federal Government; they just want to come and immerse themselves in the people’s culture. With this union, I believe this will definitely happen.”

On how Lagos residents will benefit from the partnership on tourism development, Holloway said ‘the most important thing in this partnership is for us to begin to retell our stories.

The National Museum itself is a national monument. We have artefacts that date as far back as the 15th Century. These artefacts tell you not just the Lagos story, but the Nigerian story.”

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Bank, Abubakar Suleiman, noted that the partnership will boost the tourism sector. He added: “Art and culture space is one space, it doesn’t matter who you are speaking to. They have the same objective, the same history and we are producing the same outcome.

“The objective is to bring everyone in the room. It doesn’t work partnering with one person, it’s a story which must have a beginning, middle and end. The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism is orchestrating the partnership with other sectors to develop the sector; they are the ones that can call us to the table and we will think of how to do this properly.

“As we go along, we imagine ourselves being able to put funding behind those who are trying to grow tourism, invest in hospitality, hotel, transport that connects them, and in some cases, work with museums and monuments, and ensure we can preserve these things not just for our enjoyment, but also for future generations.

“We must remind ourselves that tourism is also a business. The way you grow tourism, the way you grow art and culture and the creative industry is to make sure that there are enough resources to invest. It is only when you have invested that you can raise a standard so that people from all over the world can see and be willing to come here.”

JUST IN: Lagos shuts Idera market over dirty condition

The Lagos state government has shut down the Idera Market in the Oshodi-Isolo Local Council Development Area over unsanitary conditions.

Corps Marshal of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI, Maj. Olaniyi Olatunbosun (rtd), said ‘the market stinks’.

He said: “We shut Idera market because it stinks. They had probably not cleared the drainages for over one year and everywhere was smelly. So we shut the market based on the commissioner’s directive. And when they are ready to do the proper thing, the market will be reopened. It might take days or weeks, but it has to be clean.

“Though they complained of ineffective PSP operators in clearing their waste, we found out that they most likely don’t even patronise the PSP operators. Besides, Idera is not the only market in the Oshodi area so let them do the right thing by cleaning their space and the market will be reopened.”
