(UPDATE) Presidency to Obasanjo: Nigeria doing better under Buhari

*Says Obasanjo may be too busy to notice progress by Buhari

    *Says 2019 talks, distraction

The Presidency on Wednesday reacted to the letter by former President Olusegun Obasanjo stressing that Nigeria is doing better under the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration than previous governments.

Obasanjo in a letter on Tuesday had criticised Buhari’s government and urging him not to recontest in 2019

But briefing State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Buhari, the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, listed some achievements of the administration, which he said are better than those of past administrations.

He also noted that the former President might have been too busy to take note of the achievements being recorded under Buhari.

While stating that the Buhari’s administration is equal to the task of giving the desired leadership for the nation, he said that the government is determined to end the herdsmen / farmers clashes in the country.

According to him, the talks about 2019 is a distraction to the government.

Reading a prepared speech, Lai Mohammed said “We have read the press statement by former President Olusegun Obasanjo

on the State of the Nation. For the record, Chief Obasanjo is a patriot, and he has proven this

time and time again. We appreciate what he said concerning the Administration’s performance in two out of the three key issues that formed the plank of its campaign: Fighting corruption and tackling insurgency. Specifically, the former President said President Buhari must be given credit for his achievement so far in these two areas. We thank him for this.

“Apparently, the former President believes that the Administration does not deserve a pass mark in the area of the economy, which is the third of our three-pronged campaign promises.

“We have no doubt that in the face of massive challenges in this area, this Administration has availed itself creditably. We believe that Chief Obasanjo, because of his very busy schedule, may not have been fully availed of developments in the government’s efforts to revamp the economy, which was battered by the consequences of over-dependence on a commodity as well as unprecedented pillaging of the treasury.

“Today, most of the indices by which an economy is measured are looking up. Permit me to say, however, that Nigeria would not have exited recession through a mere order or if the Administration had not made use of ”good Nigerians” who could help.

“This Administration is making steady progress in its determined effort to revamp the economy, and the results are showing:

“* Foreign Reserves have peaked at $40b, the highest level in about four years, and up from $24 billion just a year ago, even though when we came in, the price of oil had crashed woefully.

“* According to the National Bureau of Statistics ( NBC ), headline inflation has fallen for 11 consecutive months, standing at 15.37% as at Dec. 2017. This is the lowest inflation rate since Jan 2017, and it has met and surpassed the target set for inflation in the Administration’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).

“* Our determined implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) has stopped the hemorrhaging of the treasury. Some 108 billion Naira has been saved from removal of maintenance fees payable to banks, pre-TSA. The nation is being saved 24.7 billion Naira monthly with the full implementation of the TSA.

“* The elimination of ghost workers has saved the nation 120 billion Naira

“* At about 1.8 billion dollars, the capital inflows in the second quarter of 2017 were almost double the $908 million in the first quarter.

“* In the wake of a stable Naira and increased investment inflows, Nigeria’s stock market emerged one of the best-performing in the world, delivering returns in excess of 40 percent.

“* Nigeria rose 24 places on the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business ranking, and earned a place on the List of Top 10 Reformers in the world.

“* According to Q3 2017 figures, agriculture export is up year-on-year by 25%, solid minerals exports are up year-on-year by 78%, raw materials exports are up 70% year-on-year and manufactured goods exports are up 22% year-on-year.

“* Government agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service are reporting highest-ever revenue collection, while JAMB, under the new management appointed by President Buhari in 2016, remitted N7.8 billion to the coffers of the federal government. The total amount remitted by JAMB between 2010 and 2016 was a paltry N51 million!”

He added “These positive indices may not have immediately impacted positively on Nigerians, but Nigerians will definitely get a new lease of life a short while from now. This is because the good news from the agricultural sector, which is recording a bumper harvest, will bring down the cost of foodstuffs, especially such staple as rice, and our massive Social Investment Programme will ease the pain of the most vulnerable in the society.

“When we assumed office in 2015, some 6 million farmers were involved in rice production. Thanks to the Anchor Borrowers’ programme of this Administration, we have grown that number to over 12 million farmers. The result is that our rice import from Thailand alone has dropped from 644 metric tonnes to 22,000 MT in just two years. This is phenomenal.

“Apart from rice, Nigeria is also doing well in other grains, especially Millet, Sorghum and Maize. We are now the second largest producer of sorghum after the US, the third in millet after India and our breweries are now enjoying local sourcing of those commodities.

“For maize, we are producing 10 million tons while we need about 13 million tons for both human and animal nutrition. Nigeria leads the world in the yam and cassava production. We account for 70% of the world’s yam production. In two years, we hope to be the world’s largest exporter of yam! Overall, our ambition is that agriculture should rise from 25% to 40% of GDP, so that we can banish poverty and overcome our economic anxiety.

“Our Social Investment Programme is Nigeria’s most ambitious social welfare programme ever. Currently, 5.2 million primary school children in 28,249 schools in 19 states are being fed daily; 200,000 unemployed graduates have enlisted into the N-power Job Scheme, and a quarter of a million loans already distributed to artisans, traders, and farmers.

“Finally, our investment in infrastructure is simply unprecedented. This is because infrastructure is key to faster economic growth and development.

“Here is a synopsis of what we have done in this area:

“* Power Generation at an all-time high of 7,000mw and all can be transmitted

“* RAIL: Lagos-Kano Standard Gauge is on. Lagos-Ibadan sector ready 2019, Kano-Kaduna ready 2019; The entire stretch ready 2021; Negotiations on for Coastal Rail covering 15 cities from Lagos to Calabar.

“* ROAD: 25 major highways being funded with the N100b Sukuk Bond, and all geo-political zones are benefitting equally

“This Administration is not unaware of the enormity of the challenges facing the nation, but we are up to the task. We have taken the bull by the horns, and long-suffering Nigerians will begin to experience a new lease of life as our efforts yield fruits. We will not go into a state of funk for whatever reason.

“On the Herders/Farmers’ clashes, this Administration is determined to end the crisis resulting from this once and for all, not minding that fact that the clashes predate us. I will urge Nigerians to have faith in the Administration’s ability to resolve the crisis, and to watch out for concrete measures in this regard.

“On whether or not President Muhammadu Buhari should run for another term, it is true that many Nigerians have been calling on the President to run again, while others are opposed to his return.

However, we believe this issue is a distraction for the President at this time. This is because Mr. President spends every waking hours tackling the enormous challenges facing the nation, most of which were bequeathed to his Administration by successive past Administrations.

He is committed to fulfilling the mandate given to him by Nigerians in 2015. And that’s where we are right now!

“Finally, we have no reason to believe that former President Obasanjo has any motive beyond the well-being of the nation in issuing his Special Press Statement. We have also taken his admonition in good faith, and we thank him most sincerely for taking time off his busy schedule to pen such a long statement,” he said.

He didn’t entertainment any question after reading the prepared speech.

Benue Crisis: FG cautions against incendiary comments, pictures

The Federal Government has appealed to the media and public commentators to exercise utmost restraint in their coverage of the fallouts of the recent farmers/herders’ clash in Benue.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who made the appeal in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, cautioned against “incendiary comments, unrestrained use of pictures and footages that offended human sensibilities” in the coverage of the crisis.

The Minister also cautioned against “finger pointing” that could exacerbate the situation and complicate ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to end the crisis

He stressed that the media and commentators should be cautious of their coverage in order not to further inflame passion and worsen the situation.

Mohammed said that the Government is working hard to address the situation with a view to preventing a recurrence, not just in Benue State but everywhere across the country.

”Lest we are misunderstood, we are neither saying the media should not cover the crisis nor asking public commentators to desist from commenting on it.

“All we are saying is that both must be circumspect.

”The current poisoned atmosphere of incendiary comments, unrestrained use of pictures and footages that offend human sensibilities as well as finger pointing can only exacerbate the situation and complicate ongoing efforts to end the crisis,” he said.

The Minister said that the Government was saddened by the loss of lives and the destruction of property resulting from the crisis.

He recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari, in commiserating with the Benue Governor, unreservedly condemned the killings.

He said the President had also assured of the necessary security measures to prevent further attacks and bring the perpetrators to book.

Mohammed said the Government had mapped out short and long-term solutions to the incessant clashes, including a planned conference of stakeholders.

He assured of the government’s strong determination to find a lasting solution to the farmers/herders’ clashes.

Digital TV will generate N100bn for Nollywood – Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says that Digital Television will generate N100bn annually for Nollywood through FreeTV distribution network.

The minister made this known on Wednesday at the launch of digital switch over at the premises of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Ilorin.

He said that Nigerians have watched Nollywood moved from VHS tapes to VCD to DVD, adding that the whole world has moved to digital consumption of content with its attendant benefits and democratisation of distribution.

Nigerian TV viewers, the minister said have been constrained by limited penetration of internet in their homes.

“With the middleware in our `Set Top Boxes’; homes will be able to buy and watch the latest Nollywood movies without the need for internet.

“Imagine a film released on Monday morning being immediately available to all the households in Kwara at the touch of a button. That is the kind of experience we are talking about,” the minister added.

Mohammed added that FReeTV has the capacity to grow TV advertising market by 400million dollar per annum through audience measurement.

“In this regard, permit me to use this opportunity to throw the weight of the government behind the NBC in its efforts to create a viable currency by which producers of content and channels can be re-numerated,” he said.

The minister said that the digital switch over will create tens of thousands of jobs through Technical and Manufacturing opportunities.

“`Set Top Box’ assembling and ultimately manufacturing is an irreversible mandate by the government to the industry.

“We expect this to extend very quickly to local Smart TV and Tablet manufacturing.

“With our strong consumer base, we can quickly become the supplier of these equipments to the whole of West Africa,” the minister added.

Mohammed added that Electronic Programme Guide will also be a platform for App developers to create products that will make life easier for the home consumers.

“For the people of Kwara, we welcome the publishers of Apps to start looking for how to make living easier and commerce easier, using the technology that sits on these boxes,” he added.

Mallam Ish’aq Modibo Kawu, Director General, National Broadcasting Commission ( NBC ), in his remark said the switch over in Ilorin was the third since inauguration in Jos, Plateau State.

Kawu said that one of the reasons for choosing Kwara in the North Central was the presence of old broadcasting house and its closeness to international borders.

He said the switch over will be done in each of the six geopolitical zones of the country, adding that Kaduna will be next to switch over to digital TV.

The DG added that the Federal Government has imported 600, 000 Set of `Top Boxes’ at subsidised price.

He said that when the 600, 000 boxes are exhausted, there will be no subsidy for subsequent ones as the boxes will be manufactured in the country.

The minister said the DSO would also create a N100 billion per annum FreeTV distribution network for Nollywood.

To achieve these, he said government would support the Nation’s Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in its efforts to create a viable currency by which producers of content and channels could be re-enumerated.

Mohammed said with the middleware in the Set Top Boxes, homes would be able to buy and watch the latest Nollywood movies without the need for internet.

“Imagine a film released on Monday morning being immediately available to all the households in Kwara at the touch of a button.

“That’s the kind of experience we are talking about,’’ he said.

The minister said the DSO would create tens of thousands of jobs through Technical and Manufacturing opportunities.

“Set Top Box assembling and ultimately manufacturing is an irreversible mandate by the government to the industry.

“We expect this to extend very quickly to local Smart TV and Tablet manufacturing,’’ he said.

He noted that the Ilorin inauguration (DSO) had put the government back on track in digitisation efforts.

“Let me assure you all that we will not wait for another year before our next rollout.

“In fact, the next inauguration will be barely 48 hours from now, in Kaduna. We will then follow up rapidly to extend this digital television experience to all the six geo-political zones,’’ he said.

He implored the ITS to rapidly extend the digital television experience beyond Ilorin and its environs, “so that the good people of Kwara can reap the digital benefits.’’

The minister assured all stakeholders of President Muhammadu Buhari’s unwavering support for the growth and development of the industry.

In his remarks, the state Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed said with DSO, the time had come to develop a television industry “that is uniquely Nigerian in content, orientation and style.’’

The governor said the nation’s television must achieve the fame and spread attained by the fledgling movie industry, Nollywood renowned globally for its prolificacy, richness and entertainment value.

The governor, represented by the state Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Babatunde Ajagbe, said the freedom DSO provided should not be used to spread falsehood and fake news.

He specifically cautioned against the increasing dangers posed by uncensored political programmes in the state.

FG to grow TV advert market by $200m per annum – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari said on Wednesday the Federal Government would grow the television advertising market by $200 million per annum through audience measurement.

This, according to the President, will be done through the development of digital economy.

He added that the digital economy would also create a N100 billion per annum free TV distribution network for Nollywood.

President Buhari stated these at the launch of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA)’s digital switch over held in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Buhari, who was represented by Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said: “We have watched our beloved Nollywood move from VHS tapes to VCD and DVD, whereas the whole world has moved to digital consumption of content with its attendant benefits and democratization of distribution. We have been constrained by limited penetration of internet in our homes. With the middleware in our set top boxes, homes will be able to buy and watch the latest Nollywood movies without the need for internet.

“Imagine a film released on Monday morning being immediately available to all the households in Kwara at the touch of a button. That’s the kind of experience we are talking about.

“In the meantime, there are a number of initiatives that we will be focusing on in order to achieve a credible and effective development of the digital economy. Some some of these initiatives include the consumer proposition that is all-encompassing which most Nigerians, and definitely majority of the people of Kwara have never had access to and creating of tens of thousands of jobs through technical and manufacturing opportunities.”

Don’t divert attention on $1bn ECA withdrawal, PDP tells FG

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) has again challenged the Federal Government to address issues being raised on its decision to withdraw $1 billion from the Excess Crude Account, instead of attempting to divert attention of Nigerians.

Accusing the government of attempts to pilfer the money to finance partisan activities in 2019, the opposition insisted that explanations so far offered by the government reminded untenable.

A statement on Sunday by the spokesman of the PDP, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said the government has rather resorted to making unsubstantiated allegations against the PDP, stressing that this has only reinforced the government’s manipulative tendencies and arrogant spurn to the sensibilities of Nigerians.

The party challenged the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed to also substantiate his claims that the PDP was re branding with stolen money.

Mohammed had, in response to questions raised by the opposition on the withdrawal of the money, accused the PDP of re-branding with stolen money.

“Such wild allegation was only intended to divert public attention from the heavy sleazes under the current administration, the latest being the moves to use the fight against terrorism as a conduit to siphon public funds for partisan purposes”, Ologbondiyan said.

The PDP regretted that the government has failed to address questions being asked by Nigerians on the rationale for withdrawing such huge amount of money to fight insurgency it claimed to have technically defeated.

“The Federal Government has failed to address issues raised by the PDP and majority of Nigerians, including APC members, who can not fathom how this administration would want to expend N365bn on fighting insurgents it claimed had been technically defeated.

“It is indeed appalling that rather than being remorseful, the APC Federal Government has renewed its wild allegations and cheap blackmail against the PDP.

“It is clear to all that the PDP does not have access to public funds and cannot be rebranding with stolen money. Instead, we are rebranding on the grace of the general goodwill of Nigerians who have suffered untold hardships in close to three years of APC government.

“While we understand the nervousness of the APC Federal Government over our rebranding and the renewed popularity of the PDP, which has signaled their inevitable death knell, resorting to outlandish allegations will not help them as Nigerians have since seen through such old-fashioned propaganda and gimmicks.

“We are however not surprised by this diversionary and deceptive approach from the APC government; a government whose officials have since become notorious for dishing out falsehood to Nigerians to cover their incompetence and corrupt tendencies.

“This is the same minister of information, who in a press conference in Abuja, in 2016, promoted allegations that 55 people stole a total of N1.34 trillion; that five former governors stole N146.8 billion; that four former ministers stole N7 billion. All these have remained unsubstantiated.

“While we challenge this Government to come clean on the issue of the $1bn Excess Crude money, we also challenge the Minister of Information to comment on allegations that the APC funded its 2015 presidential campaign with stolen public funds, particularly from Lagos and Rivers states.

“He should also waste no time in commenting on allegations of corruption against their former SGF, Babachir Lawal, the Mainagate and other heavy sleazes going on unabated under the current APC-led administration”.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of FEC meeting in Abuja.

Stressing that the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, could not attend the post- FEC briefing because of an urgent appointment, he said the minister gave FEC assurance that there was no cause for alarm.

According to him, Kachikwu told FEC that there is enough fuel in the country to last till January 2018.

He said there is no intention by the government to increase the pump price of fuel.

  • Diversifying from oil to creative industry will boost our economy, says Lai Mohammed

Diversifying from oil to creative industry will boost our economy, says Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji  Lai Mohammed, has said that the nation has gradually begun diversifying its economy from oil to the creative industry to boost its internally generated revenue (IGR) and meet international standards.

The minister, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Grace Gekpe, said this at the event which ended in the early hours of Monday during the grand finale of Queen Moremi Ajasoro (QMA) beauty pageant at Oriental Hotel in Lagos.

“The ministry has discovered that the creative industry is an alternative to oil and that is why we are doing a lot to support the sector,” he said

According to him, the creative industry is an area that opens up employment opportunities for the talented youths, thereby, reducing unemployment and possible youthful crimes.

The minister commended Princess Ronke Ademiluyi, the Heritage Ambassador to QMA, for her efforts in promoting culture, and advised other groups to encourage the youths to develop more interests in promoting their cultures.

“Promoters of our culture and tradition such as Princess Ademiluyi should be encouraged because she is complimenting the efforts of the government to ensure that our culture does not go into extinction.

“Such a cultural pageant as the QMA will also empower young girls not only to learn their traditional language and history, but also make them to be creative and productive,” he said.

The minister also encouraged more groups in the entertainment industry to key into programmes that would promote Made-in-Nigerian fabrics, foods, dances and local languages which would make the country the world’s tourist attraction.

NAN reports that the 2017 QMA pageant produced 22 year-old, Oluwatosin Shola-Shittu, an indigene of Ikere Ekiti , Ekiti State as the new queen out of no fewer than 500 young girls who registered for the second edition of the pageant.

Shola-Shittu received a cash prize of N5 million, which she was expected to use for investment as part of the empowerment programme of youths initiated by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the patron of the pageant.

The new queen was crowned by the outgoing queen, Blessing Animasahun.
