    We’re ready for council poll, says LASIEC

    The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has expressed its readiness to hold the 2025 local government elections across the council areas in the state.

    The commission’s boss, Justice Bola Okikiolu Ighile (rtd) gave the affirmation when she visited the chairman of Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Adebayo Olasoju, during a familiarisation tour of the council areas.

    Justice Ighile affirmed that LASIEC is ready to carry out its duties assuring that the election will be free and credible.

    She went on to task the council authority on intensive voters’ education to complement the commission’s effort in eradicating or keeping voters’ apathy at the barest minimum.

    She appreciated the council helmsman for the pleasant reception.

    Olasoju congratulated the retired justice and the commission members on their appointments to steer the electoral body.

    He relayed the earnest anticipation of contestants alike in the council area for election guidelines and modalities.

    The council boss emphasised the importance of the electoral body to the continued existence and effectiveness of local governments.

    He assured of maximum cooperation from all and sundry in the forthcoming polls.

    LASIEC receives updated voters register from INEC

    Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has received the updated register of voters and the list of newly created polling units in the state from the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), for the conduct of the next local government elections.

    INEC has as part of its statutory responsibilities, the mandate to register eligible voters across the country, while the State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) need such for the organisation and conduct of local government elections in various states

    Presenting the document on behalf of INEC, in a soft copy format, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Lagos, Prof. Ayobami Salami, appreciated the long-standing working relations, collaboration and partnership between INEC and the State Independent Electoral Commission, particularly the LASIEC.

    Salami urged LASIEC to adapt and use the document according to the rules, regulations and procedures in the overall interest of ensuring free, fair and credible elections for the advancement of democracy.

    Receiving the updated version of the document, the representative of LASIEC’s Permanent Secretary Ademola Gbadegesin, hailed INEC for the timely manner at which the document is being handed over to the commission.

    He said this would help in the early preparation for the next local government election.

    He said: “No doubt, our structure is different from INEC as theirs is based on 20 local governments and 245 wards, ours is 57 local governments and LCDAs as well as 367 wards. We have to sit down and dissect to suit our demographic distribution.”

    He said the commission is committed to build the confidence and trust of the electorate.

  • LASIEC presents certificate of return to councillor-elect

    The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) yesterday presented a certificate of return to the winner of the last Saturday Councillorship by-election in Ward A (Obele/Oniwala), Surulere Local Government Area.

    Kazeem Bello, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), polled 793 votes to defeat his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opponent, Abdulateef Bolaji Sanni, who got 195 votes.

    LASIEC Chairman Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd) congratulated Bello and his party, on their victory.

    She urged him to see his election as an opportunity to serve the people and champion their cause, stressing that the councillor-elect must “be seen to be a servant of all regardless of political affiliations or differences.”

    Represented by an Electoral Commissioner, Olusegun Ayedun, the LASIEC chief noted that the commission demonstrated its commitment by providing “ a level playing field for the two political parties and their candidates in the election and ensured that people’s votes really counted.”

    She promised that the commission would continue to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

    Justice Phillips, however, expressed disappointment over voter apathy during the election, adding that it was inexplicable that less than ten per cent of registered voters in the area cast their votes during the exercise.

    The Nation learnt that there are 11,095 registered voters in the ward.

    While pointing out that this was a challenge which the commission was ready to tackle by stepping up its Continuous Civic and Voter Education programmes, Justice Phillips said the commission expected key stakeholders, including leaders of political parties, elected office holders and appointees to conduct themselves in manners that would inspire confidence in the citizenry and motivate them towards more active participation in the electoral process.

    Bello hailed the commission for ensuring that the election was free, fair and credible.

     

  • LASIEC set for By-election in Surulere

    The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) will tomorrow conduct a by-election to fill the vacant Councillorship seat in Ward A ( Obele/Oniwala ) in Surulere Local Government Area of the State.

    Briefing reporters, Its Chairman, Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd), said the commission had taken delivery of all election materials, both sensitive and non-sensitive, required for the conduct of the election.

    The commission, she said, had concluded the training of the personnel to be used for the conduct of the election.

    Justice Phillips urged the election personnel to comply fully with the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of elections, warning that the commission would not tolerate any excuses for mistakes on the part of the election personnel.

    According to her, the commission was working closely with the relevant security agencies, particularly the police, Department of State Service and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, to ensure a hitch-free and peaceful election.

    The LASIEC chief said two political parties – the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) and the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) are the only parties contesting for the councillorship seat which became vacant following the death of Razak Bello, who was the Councillor representing the Ward until his death.  

    Kazeem Bello is flying APC flag, while PDP fielded Abdulateef Bolaji Sanni.

    Justice Phillips appealed to all eligible registered voters in the affected area to cast their votes for any candidate of their choice without any fear of molestation or attack, pointing that the by-election offered another opportunity for registered voters in the area to vote for the candidate they believed would give them effective representation in government and facilitate development to the community.

    While promising that the people’s votes will count, she explained that the period of the election would be between 9am and 3pm .

    The procedure, she said, would be simultaneous accreditation and voting.

    She commended the media for the support given to the commission, adding, however, that the media should also do more to enhance participation in the electoral process at all levels.

  • By-election: LASIEC to verify candidates’ credentials

    The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) will today embark on the verification of documents submitted by candidates of political parties contesting for the vacant Councillorship seat in Ward A (Obele/Oniwala) in Surulere Local Government Area of the state.

    The election will hold on April 27.

    Candidates of political parties contesting for the election are expected to present original copies of all the documents which they had earlier submitted to the Commission alongside their forms for screening.

    The list of validated candidates will be pasted on the Notice Board of the Commission on tomorrow.

    According to LASIEC, the voters’ register has been displayed at the Ward Collation Centre in Obele Odan Primary School, Surulere.

    The commission urged eligible voters to visit the centre to ascertain the information recorded on them as contained in the register.

    The by-election was meant to fill the councillorship seat which became vacant following the death of the occupant, Razak Bello.

    LASIEC Chairman Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd), appealed to residents of the affected ward to be peaceful in their conduct and actively participate in the electoral process by casting their votes for the candidates of their choice.

  • LASIEC to hold by-election on April 27

    The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has fixed Councillorship by-election into Ward A (Obele/Oniwala) in Surulere Local Government Area of the State for April 27.

    Its Chairman, Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd), said this at a forum organised by the commission for the stakeholders in the ward.

    Represented by Mrs Toyin Ibrahim-Famakinwa, an Electoral Commissioner, Justice Phillips said the by-election was meant to fill the councillorship seat which became vacant following the death of the occupant, Razak Bello.

    The Chairman promised that the commission would ensure that the by-election would be credible.

    She, however, expressed concern over “the decline in voters turn-out during elections” conducted at the local, state and national levels, noting out that the trend was unacceptable.

    She pledged that the Commission would “intensify efforts and adopt new strategies towards sensitising and mobilising voters for more effective participation in the electoral process.”

    Political parties, she said, must do much more to complement the efforts of the commission towards eliminating voter apathy and enhancing voter participation in the electoral process.

    Justice Phillips urged political parties to adhere to the provisions of the guidelines issued by the commission on the by-election, adding that the programmes were time- bound and would be strictly adhered to.

  • LASIEC holds by-election today

    The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) will today conduct councillorship by-election into Ward C (Owode Orile) in Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

    At a media briefing yesterday at LASIEC headquarters in Sabo, Yaba, its chairman, Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd.) said the election would be conducted between 9 a.m and 3 p.m.

    She urged eligible voters in the affected area to cast their votes for the candidates of their choice.

    According to her, there will be no restriction of movement during the period since the election would be organised within a small community.

    Justice Phillips said the commission would set up an Election Support Centre at the headquarters to monitor reports from its personnel and promptly respond to any challenge that may arise.

    The commission, she said, had held an intensive training programme for the ad hoc workers to be used for the conduct of the election to avoid errors that could cast doubts on the integrity of the election and the commission.

    The chairman added that the commission was working in collaboration with security agents to ensure a hitch-free poll.

  • Bye-election: LASIEC releases candidates’ names

    The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has released the list of validated candidates for the Councillorship bye-election into Ward C (Owode Orile) in Bariga Local Council Development Area.

    Nurudeen Olufemi Sowande of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Mr. Taiwo Azeez Sunkanmi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cleared by the commission have been pasted on the Notice Board at the commission’s Yaba headquarters.

    The commission has scheduled a training programme for the election personnel who will serve in various capacities as ad-hoc staff during the election.

    The training programme will be held tomorrow.

    The ad-hoc personnel will consist of Poll Clerks, Presiding Officers, Supervisory Presiding Officers, Collation Officer as well as Returning Officer among others.

    They will be deployed to all the 33 Polling Units in the affected Ward.

    The training programme, according to the Commission, would be thorough and encompassing to ensure that the ad-hoc personnel not only understand their duties as election officials, but actually carry out such

     

  • LASIEC displays voters’ register for council poll

    The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) yesterday displayed voters’ register for the conduct of the councillorship by-election in Ward ‘C’ (Owode Orile), in Bariga Local Council Development Area.

    It urged voters to visit the ward collation centre at CMS Primary School, Okuta Road, Bariga to check their names.

    The register will enable voters to confirm the polling units where they will vote.

    Candidates for the election are expected at the commission tomorrow for the validation of their documents.

    The Nation learnt that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) have indicated interest to contest the election.

     

  • LASIEC assures of credible poll

    The Chairman, Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd), has assured stakeholders that the Councillorship bye-election into Ward C (Owode Orile) in Bariga Local Council Development Area of the state will be credible.

    The electoral umpire said the commission had no “preferred political party or candidate for the bye-election”.

    Phillips spoke at a Stakeholders’ Forum organised by the commission in Bariga.

    Represented by a LASIEC Commissioner Mrs Toyin Ibrahim- Famakinwa, the Chairman stressed that electorate votes would count.

    According to her, closing date for the submission of nomination forms is on December 5.

    Divisional Police Officers for Bariga and Pedro Police Stations and the Director, Department of State Service in the area assured residents in the area of their safety.

    The trio warned that anybody caught fomenting trouble would be prosecuted.
