  • No election is perfect, says LASIEC

No election is perfect, says LASIEC

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) yesterday said there were short-comings in  the July 22, 2017 local government election.

Its Chairman, Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd), who took stock of the poll, said: “no elections are ever perfect.”

She spoke at the opening of a four-day Post-election Retreat/Strategic Planning Workshop  at the Jubilee Chalets, Epe.

Justice Phillips said the commission would not delude itself that the election was perfect.

She said the desire for improvement in future informed the decision to do a  critique of all the major election activities and programmes carried out by the commission.

‘’The exercise will enable us  to find out where we erred as an Election Management Body and how to make necessary amends for better performance in future elections”, she said.

The chairman said LASIEC could not afford to rest on its oars despite observers’ report that the election was    free, fair and credible.

She pledged  that future elections would be more transparent, credible and acceptable.

The commission, she said,  was seriously considering the adoption of e-voting t achieve these objectives.

Justice Phillips said the commission was now sending electoral officers to monitor elections conducted by sister agencies, a task hitherto handled only by state electoral agencies’ chairmen.

This, she said, would enable the officers gether experience on howelections are conducted in other climes

  • LASIEC presents return certificates to two councillors

LASIEC presents return certificates to two councillors

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission ( LASIEC ) has presented certificates of return to Messrs Imoleayo Oluwafemi Aderibigbe and Simeon Segun Olamoyegun of the Accord Party as councillors for wards F and H of Odi- Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area.

LASIEC said it was in compliance with the ruling of the Lagos State Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting at Ikeja, which ruled in favour of the duo.

Presenting the certificates to the councillors, LASIEC Chairman Justice Ayotunde Phillips (rted), represented by the commission’s Permanent Secretary Mr Olumide Lawal, praised the Accord Party’s  leadership, the councillors and their supporters for the confidence reposed in the judicial machinery set up by the government for prosecuting election petitions, rather than resorting to self-help which could lead to a breakdown of law and order.

Phillips recalled the pledge she made at various pre-election stakeholders meetings that the commission would always uphold the rule of law and comply with any order  by any court of competent jurisdiction at any stage of the electoral process.

The presentation of the certificates, she said, was a demonstration of the fulfilment of her promise.

The Chairman appealed to the two councillors to join hands with their colleagues to make life better for the entire citizenry in their council, adding that elected political office holders must put service to the people first and make themselves accountable to the people to justify the confidence reposed in them.

“If people who are elected into public office diligently serve the citizenry, Election Management Bodies, including LASIEC, would have little or no cause to worry about voters’ apathy as many eligible voters would enthusiastically participate in the electoral process,” she said.

The Chairman revealed that 27 petitions were filed by different political parties and their candidates over disputes arising from the July 22 council elections, of which two were determined in favour of the petitioners.

Lagos Chairman of the Accord Party, Mr. Olatunde Olugbenga Cole, thanked the commission for the support and cooperation rendered during the tribunal’s sittings.

The experience, Cole said, had strengthened his confidence in the rule of law.

Olamoyegun, who spoke on behalf of his colleague, thanked God and hailed the commission for its commitment to improve in the electoral process.

He promised that they would work hard to make life a lot better for the people in their council, stressing that “out of the 27 petitions that were filed by different political parties, the only two successful ones came in our favour. Hence, we cannot afford to disappoint the electorate that gave us this chance. I have always known the chairman to be a woman of integrity, we all have respect for her.”

  • Council poll: LASIEC defends Itire/Ikate LCDA result

Council poll: LASIEC defends Itire/Ikate LCDA result

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has defended the result of the July 22 council poll for Itire/Ikate Local Council Development Area (LCDA) which produced Apatira Hameed Olanrewaju as chairman.

Olanrewaju, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), scored 5,403 votes to beat the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s Aremu Olalekan Abdullateef (2,630 votes), Labour Party (LP)’s Adebanji Femisayo Isaac (879 votes) and Accord (A)’s Bakare Oyewola Adelaja (193 votes).

But Abdullateef filed a petition challenging the result at the Local Government Election Petition Tribunal, holden at the Lagos High Court, Igbosere, which was inaugurated last July 28, and began sitting on August 7.

He is seeking five reliefs, including a declaration that Olanrewaju was unduly returned as winner and that LASIEC “failed in its duty to properly conduct and conclude” the polls.

He is also seeking, among others, a declaration that “the results of 12 units not counted be declared null and void” as well as an order for a fresh election.

The Tribunal is headed by Justice A. Olateru-Olagbegi (Retd), while Mrs. F.O Aigbokhaevbo (CM), Ms. Y.J. Badejo-Okusanya (CM), Mr. M.K.O Fadeyi (CM) and Mr. Abdulazeez Jimoh are members.

But in an August 21 reply to Abdullateef’s petition, LASIEC, through its counsel Adesegun Ajibola SAN urged the court to dismiss the petition for want of merit.

However, at the commencement of proceedings yesterday, Abdulateef and the PDP, in an August 18, 2017 motion, applied to change their counsel from Mrs Taiwo Oreagba to Funmi Adeogun of Funmi Adeogun and Co.

This was not opposed by respondents’ counsel, Idris Thany.
