LASTMA averts midnight fire as PMS tanker overturns on Lekki–Epe expressway

A major disaster was narrowly avoided in the early hours of Sunday when a fully laden Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker overturned along the inward carriageway of the Lekki–Epe Expressway at Awoyaya.

In a statement, LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq said the incident, occurred around 2:00 a.m., involved a lone articulated tanker conveying a significant volume of PMS that reportedly lost vehicular equilibrium and upturned while navigating the inward-bound corridor of the high-traffic Lekki–Epe Expressway

According to him, “Considering the volatile and highly combustible nature of its cargo, coupled with the strategic importance of the transport corridor, the occurrence constituted an imminent and grave danger to human lives, public and private property, as well as the immediate environment.”

LASTMA noted that its officials were promptly dispatched to the scene, where operatives swiftly established a secure perimeter, enforced traffic control, and began preliminary recovery operations. Their quick response prevented fuel scooping, secondary collisions, and what could have escalated into a devastating fire.

In coordination with LASTMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service activated fire prevention protocols, maintaining close surveillance to avert any risk of ignition. The tanker’s contents were later transloaded into an empty 33,000-litre tanker under meticulous supervision, ensuring a safe resolution without any casualties.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, praised the professional response and seamless collaboration between LASTMA and the Fire and Rescue Service, describing the outcome as a testament to the authorities’ operational vigilance.

LASTMA has once again urged tanker and articulated vehicle operators to adhere strictly to safety regulations, conduct regular maintenance, and exercise caution during nocturnal operations to protect lives and public infrastructure.

Overloading: LASTMA impounds 27 commercial buses in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has commenced a statewide enforcement initiative aimed at tackling hazardous practice of vehicular overloading.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.

He noted that the impounding of vehicles was part of the authority’s sustained commitment to enhancing road safety and enforcing uncompromising compliance with extant traffic regulations across the state.

According to him, 27 commercial and private vehicles impounded during an early-morning enforcement exercise, was after repeated warnings issued through multiple public sensitisation platforms.

“The operation was executed following heightened concerns over the escalating risks posed by overloaded vehicles on major arterial corridors and densely trafficked inner-city routes.

“LASTMA enforcement officers field assessment exposed a deeply disconcerting pattern wherein motorists particularly operators of commercial vehicles indiscriminately burden their vehicles with assorted goods, stored indiscriminately within luggage compartments and precariously mounted atop vehicle roofs.

“Such unsafe practices grossly obstruct rearward visibility, destabilise vehicular balance and critically impair a driver’s situational awareness of approaching traffic, especially during overtaking, thereby substantially increasing the probability of avoidable road traffic collisions,” he said.

The general manager emphasised that vehicular overloading constitute a serious contravention of the state’s traffic laws, posing grave dangers not only to the occupants of the offending vehicles but also to other road users.

He consequently, reaffirmed the agency’s zero-tolerance stance against all traffic infractions that imperil lives and property, warning that enforcement actions against defaulters would remain sustained, intensified and  uncompromising.

“LASTMA urges all motorists to adhere strictly to stipulated loading capacities, maintain unobstructed visibility at all times and prioritise roadworthiness and safety in their daily operations.

“The agency remains resolute in the execution of its statutory mandate to enforce traffic laws professionally, equitably and without prejudice in furtherance of the Lagos state government’s unwavering commitment to a safe, orderly and efficient transportation system across the state,” he said

LASTMA urged members of the public to promptly report any commercial or private vehicles found to be in violation of prescribed loading limits, through its toll-free line on 0800-005-27862, to enable swift enforcement.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that two passengers sustained serious injuries following a road traffic collision that occurred in the early hours of Sunday along the Heritage Garden inward Oshodi–Oke corridor of Lagos.

According to LASTMA, excessive speed was the primary cause of the incident. The long red Tata commercial bus with registration number MUS 507 XX, reportedly rammed into a moving truck, which fled the scene immediately after the incident without visible damage.

LASTMA operatives stationed within the corridor promptly responded after receiving a distress alert. On arrival, officers rescued two passengers who were trapped inside the damaged bus and immediately activated emergency response procedures.

The Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) was contacted and swiftly arrived at the scene, administering first aid before transporting the injured victims to a medical facility for further treatment.

“Speeding remains one of the most prevalent causes of road traffic crashes and needless loss of lives. Adherence to speed regulations is not optional; it is a civic and moral obligation essential to safeguarding all road users,” he stated.

  • Detty December: Public commendation reflects gains from proactive traffic planning — LASTMA GM

Detty December: Public commendation reflects gains from proactive traffic planning — LASTMA GM

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has attributed the widespread public commendation it received during the 2025 Detty December festivities to the gains of proactive planning, improved operations and increased traffic discipline across the state.

LASTMA drew significant public attention during the festive period with several residents and public figures praising the agency’s effectiveness in managing traffic amid an unprecedented influx of visitors into Lagos.

One of the most notable endorsements came from popular singer, Timi Dakolo, whose public praise of the agency sparked conversations on social media and placed LASTMA at the centre of national discourse.

Speaking on the development on Saturday, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Oki-Bakare Olalekan, said the commendation was encouraging and reflected the outcome of deliberate planning rather than coincidence.

According to him, the festive season presented an opportunity to properly test the traffic management framework put in place following clear directives from the Lagos State Governor as early as September.

“The influx of people into Lagos during the Christmas and New Year period was unprecedented in the history of the state’s festive celebrations. This allowed us to properly evaluate and dissect the traffic management framework we had prepared,” Olalekan said.

He explained that unlike previous years, LASTMA adopted a proactive approach, rolling out a comprehensive traffic management plan covering October, November and December, instead of reacting to congestion as it occurred.

As part of the strategy, the agency identified major traffic flashpoints across the state, particularly areas with a high concentration of hospitality and entertainment activities, including nightclubs, event centres, bars, restaurants and hotels. Personnel and logistics were deployed to these locations well ahead of the festive rush.

A key innovation introduced during the period was the Night Gang Shift, which complemented the existing A.M. and P.M. operational structure. The new shift ensured uninterrupted, round-the-clock traffic management, especially in nightlife corridors that experience peak vehicular movement late into the night.

“Our A.M. shift runs from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., while the P.M. shift takes over from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The Night Gang Shift resumes from 6:30 p.m., ensuring seamless overlap and a full 24-hour operation,” the GM explained.

He noted that this operational enhancement significantly strengthened LASTMA’s traffic control capacity and accounted for the positive feedback received from road users during the period.

For the December operations, over 1,800 officers were deployed to reinforce traffic management in high-activity areas such as Lekki, Ajah, Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Surulere. The deployment was supported by recovery and tow vehicles to ensure the prompt removal of broken-down vehicles, accident scenes and other obstructions on major roads.

Despite the successes recorded, Olalekan acknowledged that challenges remain, particularly in the area of motorists’ behaviour. He identified lane indiscipline, reckless driving, speeding and disregard for traffic regulations as major contributors to traffic disruptions and road crashes.

He cited a late-night accident involving a container-laden truck at Apongbon Bridge as an example, noting that it took officers nearly two hours to clear the scene and restore traffic flow.

“As part of our EMBER Months campaign, we engaged transport unions, fleet operators and other stakeholders through sensitisation programmes on safe driving, vehicle maintenance and adherence to traffic rules,” he said.

The LASTMA boss further highlighted the peculiar pressure on Lagos road infrastructure, noting that although the state occupies less than one per cent of Nigeria’s landmass, it accommodates over five million registered vehicles and accounts for a significant share of national cargo movement.

He added that since his appointment in November 2023, the agency has prioritised rebranding, continuous training, discipline and technology-driven enforcement to improve service delivery and reduce human contact.

Olalekan reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to ensuring the free movement of people, goods and services across Lagos, stressing that the public commendation received during Detty December serves as motivation to sustain and improve on the gains recorded.

“Lagos is a mobile, service-driven economy. The outcomes witnessed during Detty December reflect part of the dividends of democracy promised to Lagosians, and we remain resolute in our mandate to keep the state moving,” he said.

  • LASTMA rolls out traffic control plan

LASTMA rolls out traffic control plan

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has unveiled an extensive, intelligence-driven traffic control strategy aimed at ensuring smooth vehicular movement and public safety across the state.

According to a statement issued by LASTMA spokesman, Adebayo Taofiq, the Yuletide typically witnesses a sharp increase in traffic volume, fuelled by concerts, carnivals, end-of-year parties, religious gatherings and other recreational activities.

To address the expected pressure on the road network, LASTMA has intensified its operational readiness through the deployment of experienced traffic officers, enhanced surveillance systems and round-the-clock monitoring of key traffic corridors.

vent locations, commercial hubs and major arterial roads.

Speaking on the initiative, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, advised operators of event centres, clubs, lounges and other entertainment facilities to put in place effective internal traffic and parking arrangements capable of accommodating their patrons within their premises.

He said any spill-over of vehicles onto public roads that resulted in obstruction or gridlock would attract strict enforcement measures, describing such practices as a violation of the collective right of Lagos residents to safe and unhindered movement.

Bakare-Oki also urged market leaders, traders’ associations and other commercial stakeholders to prevent their members from displaying goods on roadways, walkways and pedestrian paths.

According to him, the encroachment of public spaces forces pedestrians onto the road, increasing the risk of accidents and worsening traffic congestion.

The traffic authority cautioned motorists to ensure their vehicles were in good mechanical condition before embarking on journeys during the festive period. Drivers were also warned against driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating substances and reminded to comply with government-approved speed limits.

LASTMA reassured the public that its enforcement teams would remain vigilant and uncompromising in enforcing traffic regulations, including those against illegal parking, road obstruction, speeding and impaired driving throughout the Yuletide and beyond.

The agency appealed to road users to cooperate with traffic officers, obey traffic laws and exercise patience and civic responsibility, to ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season for residents and visitors.
