A delivery motorcyclist sustained a serious limb fracture in the early hours of Monday following a one way traffic accident on the Odo Iya Alaro Bridge inward Maryland along the Ikorodu Road corridor in Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said preliminary investigations showed that the accident occurred amid heavy traffic caused by the aftermath of a truck fire at the same location earlier in the morning.

LASTMA said that during the gridlock, a private ambulance with registration number BED 508 EA conveying a pregnant woman who was on oxygen support drove against traffic at high speed in an attempt to bypass the congestion.

LASTMA officers immediately alerted the Lagos State Ambulance Service which deployed two ambulances to the scene for emergency rescue.

The pregnant woman, along with her life support equipment, was safely transferred into one LASAMBUS ambulance, while the injured motorcyclist was conveyed in another ambulance to the nearest medical facility for urgent treatment.

The driver of the private ambulance was apprehended at the scene by LASTMA officials and handed over to operatives of the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.

LASTMA officers also ensured the damaged ambulance and the delivery motorcycle were safely removed from the road and taken to the Ogudu Police Division, while policemen provided security support during the rescue operation.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare Oki, restated the agency resolve to maintain zero tolerance for dangerous traffic violations, especially the act of driving against traffic.

LASTMA warns against road obstruction ahead of festive season

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a stern warning to residents, community leaders, religious organisations, and event planners against blocking access roads before, during, and after events as the festive season approaches.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Agency expressed concern over the persistent practice of celebrants, worship centres, event organisers, and street revellers who often take over major road corridors, causing avoidable gridlock and exposing motorists to safety risks and unnecessary hardship.

LASTMA emphasised that all roadways—whether major routes or inner streets—are public assets and must not be converted into venues for private festivities or religious gatherings.

The agency also directed owners of event centres, lounges, clubs, and related recreational establishments—particularly those located in high-traffic areas such as Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki, and Shongotedo—to ensure proper parking arrangements for patrons. Establishments whose guests routinely park along major roads, the statement noted, risk strict enforcement actions, heavy sanctions, and possible closure in line with existing traffic laws.

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, delivered the warning during an inspection tour of major traffic-prone corridors across the State, accompanied by senior management of the Agency.

  • Kudos to a super LASTMA official

Kudos to a super LASTMA official

Sir: Since last Friday evening, the community road part of Ago Okota road has been undergoing small repairs, and this has caused a very terrible grid within the axis. I spent ninety minutes within a space of 200 metres. Some trucks that were not guided took the road and managed a detour creating a terrific grid lock into the early hours of Saturday morning. The next day, Ago Police officers took charge but there was little could they do.

On Sunday when families came out large numbers to attend Sunday services, the traffic was more than impossible; some people had their services there. I was a victim. When I managed to escape, I drove straight to Cele Bus Stop where the LASTMA officials normally gather. I saw an officer wearing an eagle and star on his shoulder. I casually greeted him and narrated my ugly experiences for the two days. He answered – ‘Sir, I will go there and smoothen the traffic’. I thereafter continued on my journey.

Forty-five minutes after the report, I saw the guy soaked in his own sweat, with mud all over him. He was pushing broken down vehicles that were victims of the long stay in the traffic overheating and others. Within an hour the traffic was orderly and vehicles moved without hitches. Out of excitement, I told my friends in the car about the guy’s selfless service. We offered him some money which he turned down politely, saying that he only did his job after which he walked away. I was so touched and moved with love for his person. We discussed all day at my destination – that there are some good uniform men still on the streets and around us.

In the course of my encounter with him at Cele Bus Stop, I casually took the picture of him and noted the name on his uniform as Muibi Ademola. Later, I learnt he is The Bravo of Okota Zone 27. This type of officer deserves LASTMA management if only to encourage and inspire others like him to be selfless and diligent.
