  • Firm, LASU partner to train students in water production

For the third time Rinllandded Nigeria Limited has collaborated with the Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, Lagos State University (LASU) to train students in water treatment and packaging.

The trainee students, who cut across various faculties in the university, were at the Iyana Era premises of the firms’s water packaging plant, where they received tips on successful water production and packaging.

The Entrepreneurship Centre is the initiative of the Federal Government aimed at exposing students to skills and entrepreneurial ideas to make them more marketable and self reliant upon graduation.

Rinllandded Nigeria Limited Managing Director,  Mr Ahmed Adekunle, said the gesture was the firm’s “corporate social responsibility”,  describing the partnership as an awesome opportunity.

“During this practical exercise, we take time to show the students tracks to water production from treatment to packaging. After that we take them through a class where we prepare their mind for life after school, and make them realise that the only way to go now is entrepreneurship. We also try to change their mind and orientation from thinking to being an employer of labour after school,” he said.

Arinle said Rinllandded had also sent a proposal to LASU to help build a N50 million production plant on campus where students can learn food production and packaging.  He said the university could also use the facility for work/study programme for indigent students.

Arinle added:”We have submitted a proposal to Lagos State University management for the establishment of LASU WATER within their campus, which will be sponsored 100 per cent by our company. Our investment projection is about N50 million. We want to build state-of-the-art factory so that we can bring this opportunity closer to the students and for the benefit of entire LASU community.

Ambode: Govt to tackle insecurity, others at UNILAG, LASU

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said his administration will address insecurity and other challenges facing students and workers of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Lagos State University (LASU) to ensure conducive atmosphere for learning.

The governor spoke yesterday at the Lagos House at Alausa in Ikeja when he hosted the National President of UNILAG Alumni Association, Dr Sunny Kuku, and other eminent members.

He said the state government would complement the efforts of UNILAG management in vital areas, with the objective of improving the learning experience and activities within the university community.

The governor, who graduated at 21 with honours in Accounting from UNILAG, said there was no question about the fact that the institution had impacted value and service to the state in many ways.

He assured his guests that his administration would always be willing and ready to support the institution.

Ambode said: “I am aware that the student population in the university is about 40,000. Beyond the fact that the university authority is providing services to that large population, obviously the kind of services we are providing as a government are also complementing in making the school a favourable choice for people to continue to come and learn in Lagos.

“UNILAG is situated in the heart of Lagos and so it is imperative that as a government we should support in tackling insecurity and other challenges they might have in the institution. We will support the issues that concern students, which we understand the alumni association is trying to address.

“We have this same kind of challenge in our state university on the need to actually accommodate students, to give them a conducive learning environment. It is important that we use our wherewithal to support the kind of initiative the alumni association is trying to do. We will support this and ensure that we use our resources here also to support other areas that the current vice chancellor may think the state government can intervene.”

Strike: Non-teaching staff resume work in LASU

Non-academic activities commenced at the Lagos State University (LASU) on Monday following the suspension of à nationwide strike embarked on by Non-Academic Staff of Union members.

The nationwide strike lasted for 10 days as it was suspended on Sept. 21.

Check by a correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) showed that Health Centre, Certificate unit, Postgraduate school and Registry, which were closed, have been re-opened.

NAN reports that Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Non-Teaching Staff in Nigeria Universities, had on Sept. 11, embarked on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike.

The unions include National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU).

The unions demanded payment of earned allowances to members, a review of the governance system in universities and improved funding in line with UNESCO recommendations.

Provision of infrastructure in universities, payment of salary shortfall being owed members and implementation of the judgment of National Industrial Court on university staff schools, among others.

Mr Saheed Oseni, the Chairman of SSANU in LASU, told NAN that all the non-teaching staff in the institution had resumed work, as directed by the National body and administrative work had commenced.

Oseni said the union complied with the strike directive comprehensively as directed by the national body while the strike lasted.

According to him, all the offices under lock during the strike have been re-opened and officers in charge are all on seat.

He, however, urged the Federal Government to fulfill its agreement with the unions as promised as and when due to prevent further strikes by any of the unions.

  • UNILAG, LASU extend Post-UTME registration

THE University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Lagos State University (LASU) have extended the registration deadline for the 2017/2018 post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation (UTME) screening to Friday.

Both institutions had initially announced closure of the registration portal last Friday.

However, candidates have now been told they can still register until Friday this week.

This is likely a result of JAMB’s directive to tertiary institutions not to close registration or conduct post-UTME screening until the National Examination Council (NECO) released the results of its June/July Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and they (the institutions) got a comprehensive list of candidates that reflected those who had applied to change their institutions of choice.

The NECO released its result last Thursday.

A statement signed by the UNILAG Registrar, Dr. Taiwo Ipaye, confirming the postponement, reads: “This is to inform the general public that the University of Lagos online registration for the Post-UTME Screening application has been extended to close on Friday, September 22, 2017.”

The LASU statement signed by Mr. Ademola Adekoya Ag. Head, Centre for Information Press and Public Relations, reads: “In order for Candidates with outstanding issues to complete their registration and allow for new UTME Candidates, who have recently changed their first choice of institution to the Lagos State University, to process their registration, the Lagos State University Management has approved one-week extension of the 2017/2018 Online Admission Screening Exercise.”

  • Why we dismissed ASUU chairman, 14 others – LASU

Why we dismissed ASUU chairman, 14 others – LASU

The management of Lagos State University (LASU) on Monday defended the dismissal of 15 lecturers of the institution.

The lecturers were dismissed about two weeks ago for misconduct.

The management claimed it followed due process in dismissing the chairman of ASUU in the institution, Dr. Isaac Akinloye Oyewunmi, his deputy, Dr. Adebowale Adeyemi-Suenu and 13 others.

Oyewunmi was dismissed for collecting N50, 000 from 2003 modular year students of Political Science Education.

Adeyemi -Suenu  was sent packing for altering the results of 12 students already advised to withdraw by Senate in the Department of History and International Studies  in the 2015/2016 Academic session.

Addressing a briefing at the university Senate building on Monday, the Vice Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Lanre Adigun Fagbohun, recalled how he received the petition on Oyewunmi in October last year, wrote the ASSU chairman to respond to the allegation, but declined the request.

Fagbohun said he wrote to three other individuals mentioned in the petition and the trio admitted that Oyewunmi indeed demanded for money to processes the students’ result.

This, according to him, led to the setting up of a fact- finding panel which later established that Oyewunmi had a case to answer.

Fagbohun said another committee found Dr. Adeyemi -Suenu guilty of manipulating students’ result.

  • LASU dismisses ASUU chairman, 16 others for misconduct

LASU dismisses ASUU chairman, 16 others for misconduct

The Lagos State University (LASU) Governing Council has dismissed 17 academic and non-academic staff, including the chairman and vice-chairman of Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) in the institution, for misconduct.

The ASUU chairman is Dr. Isaac Oyewunmi while Dr. Adebowale Adeyemi-Suenu is the vice chairman.

LASU’s spokesman, Mr. Ademola Adekoya, said in Lagos on Friday that the institution also dismissed two non-academic staff and demoted two others.

Adekoya said the decision to dismiss the workers was taken at the 115th Governing Council Meeting of the university held on Thursday.

“Pursuant thereto, the Governing Council with immediate effect dismissed 15 members of the academic staff, two members of non-academic staff, and sanctioned two others for different acts of misconduct,’’ Adekoya said.

He said Oyewunmi was dismissed for demanding N50, 000 from students while Adeyemi-Suenu was sacked for “unilaterally altering ‘the results of 12 students already advised to withdraw from the institution by Senate.”

Adekoya said the Council established that Oyewunmi demanded N50, 000 from 2003 modular year students of Political Science Education on the sandwich programme to process their results.

He said the Council found Oyewunmi culpable of attempt to obtain money for himself as an inducement to carry out his duties and consequently dismissed him from the service of the university.

Adekoya said the university established that Adeyemi-Suenu unilaterally altered the results of 12 students of History and International Studies already advised to withdraw from the institution by Senate.

The incident took place in 2015/2016 academic session.

“He changed their status from “withdrawn” to “good standing.

‘’He also changed the results of some final year students outside the scope of the departmental decision.

“Dr. Adeyemi-Suenu also awarded grade point of 2.0 to two students in an examination which they were absent.

“This is tantamount to manipulation of students’ results in contravention of provisions of the Conditions and Scheme of Service for Senior Staff and therefore dismissed from the service of the university,’’ the institution’s spokesman added.

Other staff dismissed for various financial and academic misconduct were – Mr. Olatoye Raji, Dr. Olugbenro Odofin, Dr. Adebowale Ademeso, Dr. John Adeogun, Dr. Scholastica Udegbe and Dr. Olufemi Soyeju.

  • LASU alumni intervene in crisis

The Lagos State University Alumni Association has inaugurated eight-member panel to find a lasting solution to the incessant crisis by some staff unions.

The committee, inaugurated at Protea Hotel GRA Ikeja on Tuesday, is expected to meet all stakeholders in the institution, learn their grievances and proffer lasting solutions. At the end, the committee’s submissions and recommendations will be submitted to the Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode who is also the Visitor to the school.

In recent times, members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) LASU chapter, have alleged victimisation of some of its members by the current management, the latest being the ASUU-LASU chairman Dr Isaac Oyewunmi.

National President of the alumni body, Major General Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd), said it was shameful that LASU had fallen from its position of eminence among Nigerian universities  due to unending internal crisis.

Esekhaigbe said:  “Everybody in the institution’s set up suffer from the issues – be it students, lecturers or management ; but the alumni will not fold our hands and watch the school submerged due to crisis that can be resolved.

“Lack of trust, unnecessary tension and administrative set up are the causes of the crisis which we are confident that the committee will find a lasting solution to through their fact-finding mission as the huge investments of the Lagos State government will not be allowed to waste.”

The Chairman of the LASU alumni Board of Trustees (BoT), Mr Fatai Shonoiki, expressed optimism that the committee would succeed considering the calibre of personalities on it.

He said: “I am sure all LASU stakeholders- Governing Council, management, workers and students will benefit from the recommendations of the committee whose members were also students when the institution was in its glorious years and when crisis began to reduce the popularity of the school.”

Chairman of the committee, Mr Norrison Quakers (SAN), said the committee had three weeks to submit its report.

He added that old students of the institution decided to intervene because they were not satisfied with the state of things in their alma mater.

“We are going to listen to all stakeholders in the university. We all know that this is the beginning; we will ask what the cause of the crisis is, why the grievances, why they are expressing their grievances in that way, and what can be done to stop it.

“We must ensure the grievances are stopped and academic activities continue on campus which is the strength of Lagos as a state.  You cannot have an institution in the state which projects something else that is not the policy and vision of the founding fathers of the state,” he added.

  • LASU urged to match gown with town

The Secretary to the Lagos State Government (SSG), Mr Tunji Bello, on Tuesday urged managers of the Lagos State University (LASU) to tailor its academic programmes along societal and entrepreneurial needs and development.

Speaking on “The challenge of town and gown partnership in Lagos” at the 4th Annual Distinguished Lecture and Awards of Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators (ANUPA-LASU), Bello said that the university must be able to think outside the box and address socio economic problems.

“We must begin to channel our energies in a direction that would ensure an effective tackling of our societal problems at large. This will surely restore significance of the gown as credible symbol of intellectual attainment,” he said.

He added that the Institution should be a key component of the brain box of the Lagos State government and an intellectual resource base for adding value to public policy in the emergence of a mega city.

With its professional administrators and immense intellectual capacity at its disposal, Bello said LASU can play a more active role in helping the state exploit its potential and overcome its challenges.

“Lagos is naturally endowed with aquatic lives, how has this been beneficial to the state economy?  LASU should be able to lead research into this through its school of Fisheries. This Institution should be able to boost a world class research in coconut and its sustainable economy uses. The University administrators must facilitate the process.  They must act as bridge builders.  They have to be the purveyor in fast attacking the process of helping researchers relate to town,” he said.

Bello listed other challenges to include infrastructural development – particularly roads and the aggressive provision of electricity to the communities in Badagry and the Ibeju Lekki/ Epe areas that have been singled out for transformation into centres of dynamic socio-economic activities – technology to transform waste to wealth, among others.

The event which also featured presentation of awards to Bello, the Elegushi of Ikateland, Oba Saheed Elegushi, a former Head of Service and member of LASU Governing Council, Mr Akinsanya Sunny Ajose, was graced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Lanre Fagbohun, management of LASU and ANUPA executives.
