  • LASU Muslim students hold symposium for freshers

New students of the Lagos State University (LASU) have benefited from the orientation powered by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, LASU branch (MSSN-LASU).

The event, which held at the institution’s MBA Hall in Ojo campus was titled: ‘The true ambassadors: Muslim students as a focus’.

One of the speakers, Prof. L. M.  Adetona of Religious Studies Department, who spoke on the topic: ‘Propagating Al-Islam: The role of an undergraduate,’ urged the students to always create time for the work of Allah and serve him more.

Dr. Abdul-Lateef Kelani of the Faculty Law, who talked about ‘Academic excellence, students’ activism and productivity after school: Understanding its nexus’, advised the students to be involved in all university extracurricular activities, including unionism, religious groups, among others.

He said such activities would train them to be productive after school, adding that Muslims should strive to acquire knowledge, academic excellence and strike a balance to yield good results.

Mr O. J. Tijani of the Accounting Department gave a presentation on the computation of Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and its relevance in a student’s life before and after exams.

He urged the students to focus on building their CGPA.

Being a first class graduate of the institution, Tijani shared his success story with the students, noting that his case was exceptional, as he did not start with a first class but ended one.

He advised the students to grade themselves before exams to serve as guide for self-assessment when the actual grade comes, warning that as the level increases, building CGPA becomes more cumbersome.

At the interactive session, a student, Abdul Akeem from the Faculty of Art, asked how a Muslim could cope with students’ politics without foregoing his Islamic principles. He was advised to be an ambassador of Islam, defend and promote its principles.

Mallam Alabidun Mafuz, the Amir of the group, also admonished the fresh students to be part of the MSSN-LASU and play active roles in advancing the society.

VC promises freshers ‘exciting time’ at LASU

Lagos State University (LASU) has congratulated the 6,026 freshers that matriculated at its auditorium last January 24.

Management said the students were these ones cleared for the matriculated ritual out of the 7,362   offered provisional admission for the 2016/2017 academic session.

Addressing them, LASU Vice Chancellor, Prof Lanre Adigun Fagbohun, described the admission exercise as “fair”, adding that candidates who applied via the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) were selected based on 50 per cent JAMB score and 50 per cent in entrance examination.

He also said the admission was based on 70:30 ratio for candidates from Lagos compared to other states.

Fagbohun, represented by his deputy, Prof Adewale Olumuyiwa Noah, said students who made spurious claims of indigeneship were denied admission when exposed by the university’s Independent Indegeneship Verification Committee (IIVC).

According to him, management has demystified access to information as prospective candidates can now log on to the university’s website:  www.lasu.edu.ng to access information they need about the university.

The VC congratulated parents  promising that their children would have an exciting time in the  institution.

“I wish to implore parents to still continue to look after these young men and women. The fact that they have gained admission to the university does not qualify them to grow out of parental care. Parents should continue to counsel them against bad association and negative social influences as the university does not tolerate any for, of indecent behaviors including indecent dressing, among others.”

He further admonished students to steer clear of anti-social activities, but rather take advantages of the sporting facilities as well as social clubs on campus.

  • LASU clarifies indecent dressing ban

Management of the Lagos State University (LASU) has issued a statement clarifying its recent ban on indecent dressing on campus.

The statement referred students to its Students Code of Conduct Form of September 2016 to identify what connotes “inappropriate dressing.”

The statement reads, in part: “The attention of University Management has been drawn to misgivings on the part of students regarding the constituents of ‘Indecent Dressing’ and the implementation of the rules pertaining this. Management wishes to state categorically that extant constituents of inappropriate dressing are as contained in the Students’ Code of Conduct Form which was considered and approved at the 232nd Statutory Meeting of Senate on Thursday,  September 29, 2016 and is available on the registration portal.”

The statement noted that the characteristics of inappropriate dressing identified in numbers 11 and 16 of the form were not indicative of the ban of jewelry and the wearing of artificial hair by the students.

“For the avoidance of doubt, there is no rule in Lagos State University forbidding female students from wearing earrings and necklaces. Equally, there is no rule forbidding female students from wearing natural or artificial hair below shoulder level.

“Item 11 is not in reference to necklaces as such, but to very big dropping necklaces; just as item 16 has nothing in common with item q. subsection xix of LASU’s Code of Conduct for Students in the Students’ Handbook, 2016 where ‘hair attachment beyond shoulder length’ is mentioned, and which has been invalidated by the amendment of September 29, 2016. What we have witnessed in recent days are products of misinterpretation on the part of a few officials and amplification of these minor misunderstandings by scaremongers,” the statement said.

  • LASU students rise up for the needy

Some 200-Level students of the Lagos State University (LASU) took out time to show love and care to the aged, widows, and less privileged to commemorate the New Year.

Winnifred Akanaga, Yusuf Nurudeen and Ibrahim Sodiq visited some communities in Ojo Local Government Area, including Kemberi Eleduwe at Okomaiko, Onireke, and Okoko Bus stop to lift the needy.

Winnifred said it was borne out of their passion to help others.

She explained that it was done under the auspices of her foundation, Winny’s Extending Love Foundation (WELF).

A beneficiary simply called Iya Ologi, an old woman of about 80, thanked the students for their gesture.

She received food items including rice, tomato pastes, seasoning and groundnut oil.

Iya Ologi, who prayed on the students, said the items will last for some days.

LASU non-academic workers begin warning strike

The Non-academic staff of the Lagos State University (LASU) yesterday complied with the five-day warning strike by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) to press home their demands.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the unions are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
SSANU-LASU Chapter chairman Saheed Oseni told NAN that the unions complied with the strike in line with the directive of their national bodies.
Oseni said administrative activities were grounded because of the strike.
He said a strike monitoring team was in place to ensure that workers complied with the action.
Oseni urged the government to attend to the issues raised by the unions’ national leaders before the warning strike elapsed.
“But we will await further directive from our leaders on the next line of action if the government does otherwise, as failure to do the needful, will be unacceptable to the unions,’’ he said.
NASU-LASU chairman Albert Agosu said NASU-LASU earlier sent a letter to management to inform it of the action.
“Henceforth, for the five days declared, the strike will be total as directed,’’ he said.
The JAC declared the strike because of what it called the Federal Government’s inability to implement the 2009 Agreements with the unions.
It said a joint letter for the strike by SSANU President, Samson Ugwoke, NAAT President Sani Suleiman and NASU President Chris Ani, was sent to the Minister of Education.
The letter, it said, was copied the Minister of Labour and Employment, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission and President of Nigeria Labour Congress.
The statement quoted the committee as saying: “The university system is challenged by poor governance and administrative lapses which need to be addressed holistically.
“Poor funding of our universities, shortfall in payment of staff salaries, increasing corruption in the university system should be addressed’’.

The new programmes include Tourism and Hotel Management, Local Government Administration and Leadership Programme, Pharmacy, among others.

He said: “We have received the best support from our Visitor, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and other stakeholders, including the House of Assembly, Governing Council, Senate, staff unions and students.
“Therefore, the best way we can reward their trust in us is to offer the best in terms of leadership and administration, and I am very happy that LASU is back on this path to greatness.”

  • LASU honours workers at maiden award

Over 40 members of staff of the Lagos State University (LASU) were honoured at the university’s maiden ‘LASU Excellence Award’ held last Thursday.

The university’s auditorium, venue of the event, erupted in applause for the awardees who were described by management as ‘exceptional’.

Some of the awards, which were in both senior and junior categories, included excellence in teaching, best in department/unit, best in faculties and outstanding sportsmen and women.

There were also awards for those who performed exceptionally as appraised by the Quality Assurance Implementation Committee (QAIC) set up by management earlier in the year to enhance staff performance. Under this category, Mr Sheriff Kehinde Ismail of the Vice Chancellor’s office, and Dr Bosede Amoo of the Audio-visual unit were presented with N250,000 and N300,000 in addition to plaques by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Lanre Fagbohun.

Former executive secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Peter Okebukola, who presented plaques to some of the awardees, lauded the management for floating initiatives that inspire the workers to put in their best.

“We are happy that this is coming up for the first time in the history of the university. This is simply to show that we now have management who regardless of your status, appreciates your contributions to the development of this institution. Besides, it will also fire the desire among workers to put in their individual efforts towards making LASU better,” Okebukola said.

Okebukola, who chaired the QAIC, said the committee collaborated with the National Universities Commission (NUC) to create the modules used to train the workers.

He expressed joy that the collaboration in the last eight months had made workers more productive.

Earlier, Fagbohun said the award was also extended to students whom he lauded for being partners in the university’s rebranding agenda.

He promised 20 members of the Security Unit who were recognised  an undisclosed cash reward and thanked the Excellence Award Committee for ensuring the selection was fair and unbiased.

Fagbohun praised workers of the university for doing well in the outgoing year, adding that those rewarded, only ‘went beyond limits’

“All of us have been pushing the frontiers and so I believe we all deserve a plaque each.

“If you were part of the awardees, that to me, is a challenge for you to do more; if you are not, it is not a chieftaincy title. If you don’t get this year, you will get next year, only if you can work harder, “he said

Expressing appreciation on behalf of others, Dr Olufemi Fatile, who emerged first runner up in the ‘overall best teacher’ category, thanked management for the recognition.

“All of us were doing our bit in LASU without knowing that somebody was recognising our little efforts. We promise to work tirelessly to build the image of the university and encourage others that management is committed to acknowledging our productive best,” Fatile said.

LASU not on fire, says management

Management of the Lagos State University (LASU) has debunked the rumours that the university was gutted by fire on Monday.
A statement by its Acting Director of Information Martin Adekoya said there was a fire in some shops.
Adekoya said the university contacted the State Fire Service, Ojo Division, which put out the fire.
Advising workers not to panic, the statement urged them to always switch off all electrical appliances before leaving.
“No life was lost in the inferno. It must, however, be noted that LASU was not on fire as it was erroneously captioned and reported in some newspapers and other social media/online media.”

The incident, according to the statement, occurred in the early hours of Monday.

The institution added that Lagos State Fire Service, Ojo Division, which was immediately contacted, responded on time to put out the fire.

“The university’s management hereby states that LASU was never on fire but a section of the lock-up shops in the university was burnt and it was immediately put off.

‎“It is confirmed that no life was lost in the inferno and the management hereby informs all staff and stakeholders of the university that everything is under control.”
