According to him, Nigeria descended into a consumption economy because it has not experienced a positive structural transformation to lead to the reallocation of economic activities across three broad sectors: agriculture, manufacturing and services.

  • Edo community to project Saturday

    Edo community to project Saturday

TO make healthcare services accessible to its people, Sobe community in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State will, this Saturday, at Sobe Town Hall, launch a multi-million naira general hospital project.

The launch, which is part of activities marking this year’s Sobe Day celebration, will be chaired by a varsity don and United States-trained political scientist Prof Smart Uhakheme, while Edo State Governor  Godwin  Obaseki is the special guest of honour. His Highness, Chief Ero Aleburu, the Odion-Ibiado of Sobe, is royal father of the day.

Sobe Day Planning Committee Chairman Superior Senior Apostle Funso Oshoro said the focus on health facility was informed by the absence of a general hospital in the locality and the fact that Sobe, community and its environs rely mainly on ill-equipped private clinics for health care delivery services.

He noted that in times of critical health challenges, the community relies on either University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Benin City or Federal Medical Centre Owo, in Ondo State both facilities are over 50 kilometres away. “We must agree that by our population Sobe has outgrown a Dispensary or Health Centre status… We hope that the abandoned Health Centre will be the starting point to building a general hospital by upgrading the centre,” he said.

This year’s Sobe Day celebration is also repackaged to meet the  realities in the Edo State community with the presentation of empowerment machines worth over a million naira as gift items.

Oshoro said the gesture was geared towards empowering the people, especially the grassroots to ameliorate the hardship occasioned by the recession.

The N1.6million worth of tems, which will be won by raffle draw, include two motor cycles, four hair dryers, four grinders, four sewing and two vulcanising machines.

The week-long activities, which kicked off on Saturday, September 22, will feature prayers in churches and mosque, general sanitation, free medical test, rally across major streets of the community and gala night.

  • Troops launch manhunt for Kanu as probe of foreign links begins

Troops launch manhunt for Kanu as probe of foreign links begins

TROOPS yesterday launched a manhunt for Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu , barely 24 hours after the group’s proscription.

Nothing has been heard about Kanu since the proscription.

Some sources yesterday said he had gone underground.

Kanu is on bail for the alleged treason charges preferred against him.

The Nation learnt  yesterday that  his bail sureties might be asked by the security agencies to account for him.

Besides,  security agencies are  probing  IPOB leader’s alleged foreign links.

Investigators are said to be analysing a  video clip of Kanu and a Turkish citizen  as part of the probe.

A source, while confirming the search for Kanu, said: “Troops have been given a firm order to fish out and arrest the IPOB leader. As a prelude to it, the Defence Headquarters on Friday  declared IPOB as a terrorist organisation.

“Intelligence has, however, revealed that Kanu might have gone underground. As I speak with you, troops have actually searched his house and he was not found there.Troops have a mandate to arrest him wherever he might be.”

Asked what if he is not found the source said: “ We might follow legal process by holding his sureties responsible. These sureties will have to produce him.”

On the probe of Kanu’s alleged foreign links , another source said:”We are looking into the allegations of foreign support for Kanu. We are doing a profiling of his foreign contacts. We have some clues but we need to dig deeper.”

The Nation can also confirm that  government insisted on non-withdrawal of soldiers from Abia State to avoid a situation whereby the  IPOB will “take advantage and unleash mayhem” on innocent citizens.

Sources said the   presidency overruled Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on the withdrawal of troops because the police alone could not  cope with the “grave security” situation.

“The governor wanted a political solution to a military matter. But the federal government cannot watch and allow the situation to degenerate,” one of the sources said.

“Before Kanu was released on bail, these same governors in the Southeast, political leaders from the zone and others prevailed on the federal government to allow him home.

“Some of these governors and Igbo leaders made a commitment that they would  ensure that Kanu did  not abuse his bail conditions.

“The government bent backwards and ensured that Kanu was released on bail. But you can see what has happened. All those who gave the guarantee that Kanu would  respect his bail bond have been made to look foolish.

“Intelligence on IPOB revealed that without troops on the streets, the situation would have been worse.”

The  Embassy of the United States has asked Americans in Abia and Plateau states to review their security and maintain a high level of vigilance.

The Embassy’s cautionary note was contained in its travel alert.

It said: “Curfews have been declared in Abia and Plateau states because of violent attacks accompanied by threats of reprisals.

“Exercise caution in these areas; review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates.

“Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.”

The  National Leader (Southsouth) of Action Democratic Party (ADP), Senator Roland Owie,  yesterday  faulted the declaration of IPOB as a terrorist organisation.

In a statement in Abuja, Owie said the declaration smacked of double standards.

He said: “Now that IPOB has been declared ‘Terrorist group, the government should immediately declare Fulani herdsmen, Terrorist group.”

Owie added: “I urge President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government to walk the way of justice and equity in handling the affairs of Nigeria and stop pretending that all is well.

“The gravest mistake of non-equitable administrations all over the world is the denial of wrongdoings on their part.  Unfortunately for such administrations, they forget that God cannot be mocked.”

“Gravitation will help a person if he builds the side of his house straight and plumb; but gravitation will oppose him and make his house fall down if he builds it out of plumb.”

  • Lagos, firm launch artisans’ portal

Lagos State Government and Isabiwork Nigeria Limited have launched an online platform to promote artisans.

The portal, isabiwork.ng, according to the company, came out of the desire to help project artisans’ work, connect them with customers and serve as a source for the services of artisans, such as carpenters, furniture makers, cobblers, electricians and fashion designers.

Isabiwork Nigeria Limited Managing Director Mrs Oghenekevwe Omotosho told The Nation that the artisans would register with their phone numbers, business names, and proof of their handiwork. This company, she said, would help display their talents, which would culminate into referrals for them.

Mrs Omotosho said the company has adopted measures to ensure that only credible artisans were captured.

She said the platform would enable potential clients to have easy access to artisans in their localities.

She said:  “We promise to always deal with only skilled efficient and reliable artisans after a thorough due diligence has been put in place as regards their credibility and expertise. There is a big gap between the artisans and their viable customers. We are also here to provide as much benefits as possible.”

Through the government’s support, she said, the platform would also provide regular training for artisans to ensure that they are up to date with their work etiquette.

“We have discovered that most of them lack good customer relations and time management. And some of them are half baked.  With the Lagos State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, we are going to train them,” she said.

The platform currently has 2,000 artisans with group life insurance cover courtesy of the company.

An artisan on the platform, Mr Kazeem Eletu, who is a member of the Nigerian Union of Tailors, Awoyaya Branch, said the portal has opened their eyes to benefits they never thought they could have.

The effort, he said, would go a long way in growing the Micro Small-Medium Scale Enterprises (MSME).

He said: “This platform has exposed us to benefits that we thought were only exclusive to those in government work. Now we know that we can insure our lives and future as artisans. And we can also save for the future. The platform has also organised trainings for us that have opened our eyes to how we can relate better with customers.”

These include women, whose farmlands were affected by environment degradation and terrorism.
