Northern Senators laud Lawan at 67, hail his legislative legacy

The Northern Senators Forum (NSF) has congratulated former Senate President and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, on his 67th birthday, praising his decade-long contribution to Nigeria’s democratic development and national security.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’adua, the forum described Lawan as a seasoned legislator whose experience and leadership have helped stabilise Nigeria’s democratic culture.

The NSF noted that Lawan has spent 26 uninterrupted years in the National Assembly, serving on several committees and rising to become President of the 9th Senate, where he played a central role in shaping legislation and strengthening democratic institutions.

“Through consistent, constructive leadership and national service, Senator Lawan has attained the status of a statesman,” the forum said, commending his record of lawmaking and public service.

The forum also highlighted his role in the 10th Senate as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, saying he has provided steady and responsive leadership in strengthening legislative oversight of the security sector.

According to the statement, Lawan has fostered constructive engagement between the legislature, the Armed Forces and other security agencies, while guiding budget scrutiny and policy initiatives aimed at bolstering national security, accountability and the welfare of service personnel.

The forum prayed for continued good health and long life for the Yobe State lawmaker. “May Almighty Allah grant you good health and many more years of service to the people of Yobe State and Nigeria at large,” the statement added.

Senator Lawan, who represents Yobe North, remains one of the longest-serving lawmakers in the country and a key figure in the National Assembly’s leadership over the years.

Ex-Senate president Lawan rallies north, predicts 75% votes for Tinubu in 2027

…named Patron of Tinubu House-to-House network

Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan on Wednesday declared that the North would deliver over 75 percent of its votes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, insisting that continuity remains critical to Nigeria’s stability and development.

Lawan made the remarks after he was formally appointed National Patron of the Tinubu House-to-House Network, a volunteer-based grassroots mobilisation group.

The group’s leadership, led by its national chairman, Comrade Yahaya Muhammad, visited him at the National Assembly to notify him of the appointment.

Visibly delighted, the Yobe North lawmaker hailed the group’s strategy and charged its members to expand their footprint nationwide.

“I feel very delighted that you have found me worthy of this appointment,” he said. “My prayer and hope is that you continue to deepen your activities across the country, particularly in the northern part of Nigeria.”

Lawan delivered a strong endorsement of President Tinubu’s leadership, declaring that the administration has stabilised the economy and strengthened national security architecture.

“I believe President Bola Tinubu is doing his best and the APC administration is achieving a lot. The economy of Nigeria today is stable and facing the right direction,” he said.

On security, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence acknowledged the country’s challenges but expressed confidence in the armed forces, saying the administration had invested heavily in security assets and operations.

Looking ahead to 2027, Lawan urged northern voters to surpass their 2023 support for Tinubu.

“In the 2023 general elections, the North gave about 63% of the votes that saw President Tinubu to office. In 2027, we should vote for our President with more than 75% of the votes that will bring him back to office,” he declared.

He argued that Nigeria stands to gain more from stability and continuity than experimenting with new leadership.

“The President is trying to ensure that we get a fair share. So, we are better sticking with this President than trying somebody new who may not do even half of what we have seen here,” Lawan added.

The former Senate President also attributed the influx of defectors into the APC to what he described as visible progress under the current administration.

“Nobody is bribed or coerced into becoming a member of the party. They believe in APC just like we do,” he said.

Lawan encouraged the Tinubu House-to-House Network to evolve into a truly national structure capable of driving an effective 2027 campaign.

“Let it be a national network, covering not only major states but all states of the federation. We want to take the success story from house to house. This is supposed to be the basis of any serious campaign,” he stated.

The Tinubu House-to-House Network is a volunteer platform focused on grassroots mobilisation and dissemination of the administration’s programmes across all wards in the country.

Easter: Lawan seeks prayers for Tinubu, other leaders

Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, on Monday, called on Nigerians to pray for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other leaders across the country.

Lawan made this call in a statement to commemorate the Easter festivities in Abuja.

He equally called on Nigerians to overcome divisions that threaten national unity.

Lawan said: “As our Christian brothers and sisters celebrate Easter, a time of renewal and hope, let us reflect on the values that bind us together as a nation.

“The spirit of sacrifice and faith that Easter embodies is deeply ingrained in the Nigerian spirit.

“Just as Christ overcame adversity, Nigeria, too, has faced numerous challenges. Yet, through our collective strength and strong belief in a brighter future, we have consistently persevered.

“Let us renew our commitment to building a stronger, more united, and prosperous Nigeria for all.

“Let us embrace our diversity as a source of strength, fostering understanding and harmony among all ethnic and religious groups.

“Let us work together, hand in hand, to overcome the divisions that threaten our national unity and focus on the common goals that unite us.

“Let the spirit of Easter inspire us to be better citizens, to be more compassionate, and to contribute to the progress of our nation.

2027: Former Senate president Lawan denies alleged plans to join SDP

Former President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has denied alleged plans to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

A former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai had last week joined the SDP, amid speculations that other northern politicians would follow suit.

However, Lawan in a statement by his media aide, Ezrel Tabiowo, in Abuja, urged Nigerians to disregard rumours of his planned defection while pledging support for the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Office of Senator Ahmad Lawan, the President of the 9th Senate and Distinguished Senator representing Yobe North Senatorial District, has been drawn to misleading reports and posters circulating in some quarters, insinuating that he is set to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

“We wish to categorically state that these reports are entirely false, baseless, and without any merit. Senator Ahmad Lawan remains a steadfast and loyal member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party he has proudly associated with and contributed to since its formation. He remains a key stakeholder in the APC and will continue to work with the party and the government to ensure the success of their collective goals.

“For the record, throughout his illustrious political career spanning twenty-five years as a member of the National Assembly, Senator Ahmad Lawan is one of Nigeria’s few politicians with no defection record since inception. In 1999, he was elected into the House of Representatives; and transitioned to the Senate in 2007, on the platform of the All People’s Party (APP), which was later renamed ‘All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP)’. The ANPP was amongst the three minority parties that merged to birth the All Progressives Congress on 6th February, 2013.

He commends Governor Buni’s leadership and remains committed to working with him to achieve the shared vision of a prosperous Yobe State.

“Furthermore, Senator Ahmad Lawan expresses his strong support for the policies and reforms of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration. He believes in the administration’s commitment to transforming Nigeria and addressing the challenges facing the nation.

“We urge the general public, party members, and supporters to disregard these unfounded rumours and posters, as they are nothing but the handiwork of mischief-makers seeking to create unnecessary distractions and buzz for a mapped out political agenda.

“Senator Ahmad Lawan remains focused on his responsibilities as a lawmaker and a leader, and he is committed to supporting the APC-led administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in delivering good governance and sustainable development to all Nigerians.”

  • 34% interest rate stifling investments, food production, says Lawan

34% interest rate stifling investments, food production, says Lawan

Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan has expressed concerns over Nigeria’s high borrowing interest rate of 34 percent, stating that it poses significant challenges to business investments and food production across the country.

Speaking on Saturday after launching the distribution of grains and food materials to vulnerable individuals in Yobe North, his Senatorial District, Lawan noted that the exorbitant rates offered by commercial banks make it difficult for local businesses and farmers to operate profitably.

According to him, Nigerian entrepreneurs and farmers struggle to compete with their international counterparts, who benefit from much lower interest rates in their countries.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Ezrel Tabiowo, Lawan called for urgent reforms to address the crippling effect of high interest rates on economic growth and food security.

Also last Saturday, Lawan flagged off the 8th edition of the free medical outreach and free animal vaccination programme in Yobe North sponsored by his Foundation.

He explained that the distribution of food items by his foundation – the Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan (SAIL) Foundation – was an intervention to complement the efforts of the Yobe State Government to provide relief to the poor and needy during the festive period.

He urged political leaders to find a lasting solution to the nation’s economic and security challenges, adding that bailouts and interventions, which include the distribution of food items, are merely temporary measures that do not address the real problems faced by vulnerable Nigerians.

Lawan said: “There is a need for those of us that can afford it, to help those who are in dire need. It is no secret that many Nigerians are in a very desperate situation. This intervention is to give solace and some kind of relief, especially at this festive period.

“Our intention is that these food materials should go down to those who are distressed and vulnerable to the economic situation in the country; and it is not enough. Such an intervention can provide some relief for some time. However, our desire and wish is to make every Nigerian self-reliant.

“Bailouts like this, or stopgap arrangements cannot stop the problems. But, before we reach that destination, we have to do something like this.”

Senator Lawan underscored the crucial role played by state governments in complementing those of the federal government in delivering good governance.

He expressed hope that the economic reforms introduced by the President Tinubu administration would yield the desired results in 2025.

“I’m looking forward to a very successful 2025 that sees an end to all these economic situations that we face; and that those economic reforms introduced by the federal government would yield the fruits that we had expected.

“But governance is beyond the federal government. The state governments have also some very important and crucial roles to play to complement what the federal government has been doing. Here in Yobe, the state government has been doing very well. Recently, it distributed food items to the vulnerable. Whatever we do here is to complement what the state government is doing, and I’ll advocate that every state does it, but this is not the solution.”

The former Senate President bemoaned the plight of Nigerian farmers in some northwestern states of the federation, most of whom, he noted, have lost their source of livelihood due to the spate of insecurity.

“We should start thinking about how to make our farmers go back to the farms. In some states of the North-West, the bandits have made it difficult, if not impossible, for them to go to the farms. Most of the people are peasants who depend on farming. Now that they cannot go to the farms, what else will they do? So, we must as leaders work for our farmers to go back to the farms, and, not only that, provide the right inputs at the right time to help them get the best yields,” he said.

He called on the federal government to immediately wade into the high interest rates fixed by commercial banks on borrowing, which, according to him, has become prohibitive of business investments and food production in the country.

“We must also do something to make funds for investment accessible. Today, the interest rate is prohibitive; in fact, it is callous. In other countries, they give a half percent of interest rates, but, today, in this country, it is probably 34 percent when you go to the bank to borrow.

“How would you invest and compete with farmers from countries that give half percent interest rate? We need to do so much. But before we reach that destination, we must intervene and come in to support our people,” Lawan said.
