Ex-Senate president Lawan charges Military to stamp out insecurity across Nigeria

Chairman of the Senate committee on Defence, Senator Ahmad Lawan, has asked the Military to stamp out insecurity in all parts of the country.

Lawan gave the charge on Tuesday in an address he delivered during an oversight visit by the Senate Committee on Defence to the Nigerian Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

He said that inspite of several setbacks suffered by the military, every investment made by the federal government in the Armed Forces over the years was worthwhile in order to secure the country against internal and external threats.

He lauded the military for carrying out responsibilities outside its constitutional duties in a bid to protect the nation’s territorial sovereignty and ensure law and order in society.

Senator Lawan, according to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Ezrel Tabiowo, in Abuja, said: “We are partners in progress, and very much committed to ensuring that we do everything possible to enhance the resources available for the Armed Forces of our country.

“We believe that every investment in the Armed Forces, is a worthwhile investment in order to secure our country.

“We suffer setbacks sometimes, but I want to tell you that our Armed Forces have been very committed to protecting lives and the integrity of our country.

“Most times, you do much more than you are expected to do, because some of the activities you are involved in are simply not meant for you; there are so many gaps, and, therefore, you are sometimes asked to do some things that even the police should have been made to handle.”

Senator Lawan explained that the oversight visit by members of the panel to the Defence Headquarters, was for the Committee to be adequately briefed on the implementation of the 2022 and 2023 Appropriation Acts, including the Supplementary Budget passed and approved by the National Assembly, respectively, for Defence.

He expressed the willingness of the Committee to work collaboratively with the Armed Forces in ensuring the allocation of more resources to improve the military’s performance.

Lawan said: “Let me also mention, that what the Senate Committee is here to do today, is to carry out this oversight visit and to be briefed on the implementation of the 2022 and 2023 Appropriations, including the supplementary budget.

“We are here to also understand your challenges; the operations that you are involved in across the country are of particular interest to us, and, of course, your activities outside the country.

“What is of utmost concern to the committee is that we must work together to improve on your performance. As a government, we continue to insist that we must stamp out the insecurity we have across the country, but, of course, that requires more than words; that requires making resources available to you.

“We have seen the determination that our armed forces work so hard with the little that is available to you. [And] we will ensure to work harder to have more resources available.”

Earlier, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, in a brief welcome address, assured the committee of the commitment of the military to upholding the principles and ideals of the armed forces.

“Together as a team, we want to assure you that the armed forces is working tirelessly to keep the peace wherever we are.

“We believe that Nigeria is there for us, and without peace, development will be affected”, Gen. Musa said.

2024: Lawan seeks support for Tinubu, says Nigeria on threshold of possibilities

Former Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, has called on Nigerians to support the policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the new year.

Lawan, in his New Year message on Monday, January 1, said that Nigeria is on the threshold of possibilities with the coming of the new year.

He called on Nigerians to embrace opportunities, as well as challenges with courage and determination.

The former Senate president underscored the need to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration and his policies, adding that the federal government is focused on creating a prosperous and just society for Nigerians.

Lawan said: “As we welcome the New Year 2024, our great country stands on the threshold of immense possibilities. It is a time for reflection, renewal, and renewed commitment to the values that make Nigeria the giant of Africa.

“The past year has been a challenging one for our nation, with security issues, economic difficulties, and other trials testing our resolve. However, we have emerged stronger and more resilient, united by our shared aspiration for a better future for ourselves, our children, and generations to come.

“As we embark on this new chapter in our nation’s history, I want to take this opportunity to underscore the need to support our government and the policies of the President Bola Tinubu administration.

“Unity and cooperation are the cornerstones of progress. When we stand together as a nation, we can achieve great things.

“The President Bola Tinubu administration is committed to building a better future for all Nigerians. His policies are geared towards economic growth, job creation, security, and unity. These policies are not merely words on paper; they are concrete steps towards creating a more prosperous and just society.

“To make these policies a reality, the President needs the collective support of every Nigerian. We need to join hands and work together to create a conducive environment for progress. We need to embrace unity, tolerance, and understanding, setting aside differences that may divide us.

“Let us put aside partisan politics and personal interests and work towards the common goal of nation-building. Let us support our President and his administration as they implement policies aimed at improving our lives and the lives of our children. The road ahead may not be easy, but together, we can overcome any challenge that comes our way.

“This spirit of innovation and resilience has been evident in the way our people have responded to the challenges of the past year. We have seen the emergence of new businesses, the development of new technologies, and a groundswell of support for community-led initiatives.

“These are all signs that Nigeria is on the right track, a country that is on the rise. We have the potential to become a global powerhouse, a beacon of progress and prosperity for the entire African continent.

“But to achieve this potential, we must continue to work together, to set aside our differences, and to focus on the common goal of building a better Nigeria for all.

“In 2024, let us resolve to be more united, more compassionate, and more determined to make a difference. Let us work together to build a more prosperous, more just, and more peaceful Nigeria.

“As we celebrate the New Year, may we find joy and renewed hope in our hearts. May we embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead with courage and determination. And may we always remember the words of our national anthem: ‘Arise, O compatriots, Nigeria’s call obey.’”

Lawan distributes vehicles, farming equipments to constituents

Ahmad Lawan, the ex-Senate president, has provided numerous constituents in his Yobe North Senatorial District with diverse resources to support the initiation of their own businesses.

The Yobe State Governor, Rt. Hon. Mai Mala Buni, inaugurated the sixth edition of the Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan (SAIL) Empowerment Programme at the Gashua township stadium on Monday, as reported by Lawan’s media aide, Ezrel Tabiowo, in Abuja.

According to him, the empowerment materials distributed at this year’s programme include vehicles such as Peugeot sedans (406 and 307), Sharon buses, 18-seater Toyota buses, tractors for farming, combined harvesters, rice planters, fire fighting trucks, tricycles (Keke NAPEP), small harvesters and Toyota Land Cruiser Sports Utility Vehicles.

Others are motorcycles, power generators, refrigerators and deep freezers, grinding machines, sewing machines, irrigation pumping machines, chemical sprayers (manual and auto), and pots and stoves.

In his speech, Senator Lawan said the empowerment programme was conceived by his foundation to improve the economic fortunes of his constituents and appreciate them for the support shown him over the years.

He assured that the gesture will be sustained by also attracting federal presence through projects to stimulate and boost business activity in Yobe North Senatorial District.

Lawan said: “This event is one to empower some of our constituents whom we think, at this point, deserve to be empowered. It is by no means an effort to provide for everyone. In fact, it is impossible to provide for everyone but gradually we will touch as many as possible.

“We believe in what we do because we believe it is better to teach a man how to fish; than to give him that fish, and it is over.

“We have done fairly well in the area of providing employment opportunities for our youths who are university graduates. We are hopeful that those who were fortunate to be employed will be also employers themselves and give support to people, their families and those in their communities.

Governor Buni, while flagging-off the distribution of the empowerment materials, commended Senator Lawan for the initiative.

Lawan kicks-off free medical care for poor, aged constituents

Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan has kicked-off free medical care for poor and aged constituents in his Yobe North Senatorial District.

The medical outreach, which, takes place annually, has been on for the last six years and is sponsored by the Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan (SAIL) Foundation.

The approved centres for the sixth SAIL Medical Outreach Programme 2023 are the General Hospital, Gashua; and Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, according to a statement by Lawan’s media aide, Ezrel Tabiowo, in Abuja.

Speaking during the ceremony on Saturday, at the Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, Senator Lawan said the medical outreach by the SAIL Foundation was aimed to complement the body efforts of the Yobe State Government under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni.

He lauded the Ministry of Health for partnering with the foundation in ensuring improved quality of healthcare for citizens of the state.

The former Senate President said that the partnership with the Ministry of Health facilitated the establishment of healthcare facilities across the various local government areas in Yobe North.

Lawan said: “Let me assure you that by the grace of God we will continue with this programme in the coming years, and we will always like to improve on what we have done before.

“The adages, “health is wealth” and “a healthy nation is a wealthy nation”, are facts. We want to ensure that our people are healthy, so that they can go about their normal businesses.

“Our intervention has been to support those people who are not only challenged but who have less or probably even nothing to fight those challenges.

“In society, those who have should support those who don’t have or who have less; that is why the SAIL foundation instituted this particular programme, and as we do today, we also provided for our livestock vaccination activities simultaneously.

“This morning, we launched and flagged-off in Yusufari local government, the livestock vaccination programme. It is our desire to not only make our people healthy but our animals.

“I am happy to note that what we do in our medical outreach is even touching on some of our neighbours from Jigawa, Bauchi and so on. I wish we could do more but we will try to do better than this.

“What we do is to simply complement what the Yobe State government has been doing. Our state government has been doing so well in health and others areas, too. And, therefore, this token is in support of what it has been doing.

“I want to commend Governor Mai Mala Buni, for working so hard to ensure that our population are so healthy, and, of course, very productive.

“I want to also take this opportunity to commend President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, who has taken health as part of those areas of priority for this administration.

“We will continue to support Mr. President to ensure that we are able to deliver completely, the improved healthcare for our people. And, of course, the “Renewed Hope” agenda will be realised when we all work together.”
