Lawmaker to residents: protect government facilities

Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure Chairman Mr Abiodun Tobun, has urged residents of the state to protect government facilities like their personal property.
Tobun (APC-Epe I) told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that most people did not see anything that belonged to government as theirs.
According to him, wasting and destroying government property installed with tax payers’ money is like people hurting and harming themselves.
He said: “My advice is that, they should know that government’s property is people’s property and that the property belongs to the people.
“If the government inaugurates any project, the project becomes that of the people, because the people are the end users of the project. So, it is our duty to protect government property.
“Roads are constructed for the use of the people, if we allow the roads to go bad, it means we would be driving on bad roads.
“It is our duty to ensure that the property of the government is well protected.
“If we use it very well, it is to our own advantage or else, we will be coming back to repair it, when we should have gone to other places.”
He expressed concern over the destruction of streets lights, road, water facilities, and electric cables, among others by some people.

  • PDP crisis: Lagos lawmaker hails Jonathan over political solution

PDP crisis: Lagos lawmaker hails Jonathan over political solution

A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Mr Victor Akande on Sunday lauded former President Goodluck Jonathan over his reconciliatory steps to resolve leadership crisis rocking PDP.

Akande, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ojo Constituency, I told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that such step had been long expected.

The lawmaker had on Dec. 11, 2016 called on the former President to take leadership position in the party to stem crisis rocking the party.

Jonathan had on Tuesday met PDP governors in continuation of the mediation efforts and peace talk and had also met with key leaders of the party.

The ex-President has also met with the Chairman, Board Of Trustees (BOT) of PDP, Sen. Walid Jibrin,
the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu.

He also met with Sen. Ali Modu-Sheriff and Sen. Ahmed Makarfi in the effort to carry all the organs of the party along.

Akande described the on-going consultations toward resolving the issues in the PDP as “best solution” not only for the party but also for the good of the masses.

He said the masses expected vibrant opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“One would have thought that after the Appeal Court verdict, the crisis would have ended.
‘’This is going by the statements made by both warring factions to abide by whatever verdict that would emanate from the appellate court.

“But, I can’t imagine that our leaders would continue after the judgement, I think Jonathan’s intervention is apt and timely to save the party from another defeat in 2019.

“We want warring leaders to consider the followers at the grassroots who still have the love of the party at heart.

“They should stop being selfish, after appeal verdict they should have gone on dialogue. There is no way the matter will be settled in court.

“If we wait for Supreme Court verdict, it will be very late to save PDP.

‘’We thank President Jonathan for this political solution. I am happy he heeded our call,” Akande said.

Akande, also a legal practitioner, said the warring national leaders did not consider the followers by allowing the crisis to linger this far.

“Any PDP leader that claims to love the party will toe the line of peace. We should go for truce and no longer court.
“If our leaders have the interest of the party at heart, they should look forward to resolving crisis. Everyone should sit down and discuss.

“People love this party and many want to come, let internal wrangling end.

“Jonathan should ensure that not in his own time after he left office, PDP goes into extinction, he should find the lasting solution to the party’s problems, he can do it.”

The lawmaker, who noted that the crisis had been affecting him, said he was still studying happenings in the party before he would decide what to do.

Akande, who called on Sheriff and Makarfi to douse tension, also urged Jonathan to continue on this path of inclusive dialogue until the internal dispute was finally resolved.

He also called on all the well-meaning PDP members and stakeholders to sheathe their sword and allow the current reconciliation efforts yield positive results.

NAN reports that PDP is torn between Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff and Sen. Ahmed Makarfi- led fashions laying claim to the leadership of the party.

However, the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt on Feb.17 affirmed Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic National Chairman of PDP.(NAN)

  • Lawmaker condemns alleged importation of ‘Indian garri’

A member of the Osun House of Assembly, Mr Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, (APC-Obokun constituency) has condemned the alleged importation of ‘Indian Garri’ into the country.

Oyintiloye, in an interview with journalists in Osogbo, the Osun state capital on Thursday, said the situation was ‘unacceptable’.

According to him, if the garri importation is allowed to continue unchecked, it will cause further damage to the economy.

He added that it would permanently destroy the development of the value chain in the agriculture sub-sector and cassava production in the country.

The lawmaker said it was worrisome how such staple food commodity in which Nigeria has comparative advantage could penetrate the nation’s border.

Oyintiloye urged the security agencies in the nation’s borders to be on top of their game.

The legislator, representing APC-Obokun constituency, said such development should not be tolerated at a time the nation was striving to get out of recession and strengthen her naira.

“Majority of the small-scale farmers, marketers depend on the cultivation, production and sales of gari in the local market to survive.

“The importation of garri into Nigeria is absurd and not acceptable.

“We must protect the economy especially, staple foods that we produce in this country,’’ he said.

Oyintiloye called on all stakeholders to speak with one voice against reckless importation of goods to the country.

The lawmaker, who is the House Committee Chairman on Information and Strategy, challenged farmers, who are into production of garri and such other staple food commodities, to buckle up and repackage their product to make it more acceptable.

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development said it would liaise with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to investigate the alleged importation of garri from India.

Chief Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said in Abuja that it is “strange and ridiculous” that garri would be imported when there is enough supply of cassava and garri in the country.

He said that the country produces more cassava that India, adding that Nigerians must change their attitude towards imported goods.

NAFDAC had also denied the certification of such imported agricultural produce.

  • Lawmaker, commissioner bicker over disruption of project

The lawmaker representing Remo in the House of Representatives, Ladi Adebutu, has lamented the disruption of his constituency water project.

Adebutu accused the Ogun State government of disrupting the project at Lugoke in Iperu-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area.

The lawmaker, who spoke with reporters at the weekend, alleged that Commissioner for Finance Wale Osinowo, masterminded the disruption.

He said Osinowo, who hails from the area, led thugs to stop construction at the site.

Adebutu, who is the chairman of the Committee on Rural Development, explained that the project was part of the goodwill of the Federal Government towards providing clean, potable and safe water.

“Unfortunately, what we are seeing now is that the government is denying its people the opportunity to get safe water for reasons other than good sense. It is really sad and quite unfortunate,” he said.

According to him, the incident has been reported to the leadership of the National Assembly.

The leader of Lugoke community, Aliu Fatoye, appealed to the government to allow the community host the project.

    But Osinowo denied the allegation.

The commissioner said: “How can I invade the site? Am I a politician? My mother lives in the area where the project is sited and I only went there to visit her. Is there a crime in that?

“When I got there, there was disorderliness and I tried to settle the matter. What I saw was that the project  supervisor was very rude.”

  • Lawmaker tackles poor roads in Aba

Lawmaker tackles poor roads in Aba

Aba, Abia State, known for its high revenue generating profile, its commerce and small businesses, is also just as notorious for its horrible infrastructure. Its two federal constituencies, Aba North and South, host major industries and markets, Ariaria International Market, perhaps the most popular. But its roads are impassable. Other facilities are few and far between, leaving the people in pretty bad humour.

A resident of Ngwa Road in Aba South Local Government Area, Mr. Godwin Onyeka described their situation as unfortunate, stressing that apart from food they eat, “life at Ngwa Road could best be compared with life at various IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps across the country”.

Apart from making life miserable for the inhabitants of the two local governments especially while trying to access the city centre, the impassiable nature of Aba South, Obohia, Ohanku, Umuogele and other parts of Ngwa road has contributed to the high level of crime in the area.

This has also adversely the response of security agencies to crime in the area. Even the fire servive struggles when responding to emergences in the Aba, no thanks to the worful roads.

A trip to some of these areas during the rainy season would make one shed tears as residents whose shops and offices are within the city centre are subjected to all manner of stress on a daily basis because of the deplorable nature of their road.

It was gathered that some of the Aba South residents especially those living at Ohanku, Obohia and amongst others pay thrice of the normal transportation fare to get to their homes while those at Nkwo Ngwa or Umuogele have to pay able bodied men to ferry them through the flood or stagnant water or risked being carried away by the flood.

Recounting a 2015 experience during a heavy downpour that left many family homeless with property being swept away in the flood, Mr. Kingsley noted that they are still suffering the effect of the loss till date.

Worried by the situation facing his constituents, the lawmaker representing Aba North and South Federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ossy Prestige has acquired a grader and since moved into the affected areas to begin massive grading of internal and bypass roads across the constituency.

Some of the streets and roads graded in Aba North Local Government area until the time of this report are Garden Avenue off Okigwe road, Uzonkpa/Umuobu, Railway/Salad Market avenue, Cemetery, St. Eugene, Anya Umunna off PZ, Osusu, Chibuike streets, Samuel Njoku and Imo Avenue, among other locations where work is ongoing.

Joyous residents of Aba North including Samuel Njoku, Osusu, St. Eugene inhabitants who spoke to newsmen could not hide their joy.

They recounted how for over a year they have resorted to using public transportation, leaving behind their luxury cars because of the impassable terrain of their residences due to the neglect from both state and local governments, even as they said that they have been paying their taxes and other levies from the state and local government authorities respectively.

One of the residents who simply gave his name as Ifeanyi blamed past governments in the state and representatives of the Aba North and South at the Green Chamber of National Assembly for their woes, stressing that apart from Orji Kalu’s administration that tried asphalting and grading some of the internal roads in the area, subsequent government administrations were concerned with collection of revenue and failed to engage on infrastructural development project in the last  eight years, living them to groans in penury.

Ifeanyi and others who spoke thanked Prestige for remembering them and urged him to extend such gestures to other parts of the constituency.

They hoped that the efforts of the Abia lawmaker will go a long way in complimenting the efforts of the incumbent Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s administration in alleviating the sufferings of road users in the commercial town.

In an interview, the lawmaker said that after a need assessment survey, he discovered that a lot of his constituents find it difficult to access the city center due to the impassible nature of their roads, stressing that in order to alleviate their sufferings ahead of the rainy season; he decided to embark on the project.

Prestige who told reporters that he would have loved to asphalt the roads after the rehabilitation sighted paucity of funds as a barrier because he was using his personal money to fund the ongoing rehabilitation exercise, but added that Garden Avenue off Okigwe road, a 7.5km road project which he attracted through the federal government intervention funds would be asphalted with a good drainage system to channel water to the appropriate water channel.

He used the opportunity to solicit his constituents’ continued prayers and assured that he old never relent in his efforts in making sure that he keep using his personal or government funds to improve their lives and attract government presence within his tenure as Aba h and South legislature.

He said, “Aba must be fixed. In the next couple of days, I shall be bringing an investor from Korea who will come to partner shoemakers in Aba. Mr. Jacky Zhang will be coming to inspect what the shoe makers are doing in Aba, see how is going to help them improve technologically and as well, take their wares to the global scene for marketing and attracting investors with like minds.”

  • Lawmaker urges govts, individuals to invest in agriculture

A lawmaker, Mr. Hilary Bisong, has urged governments to prioritise the agricultural sector, to ensure food security.

Bisong, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member representing Boki II Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar that according priority to the sector would improve food production, food sufficiency, reduce unemployment and poverty and boost socio-economic development.

He said if attention was given to the sector, the majority of unemployed graduates would venture into agriculture and become self-reliant.

The legislator said for the country to overcome economic challenges, governments and individuals must increase investment in agriculture to improve the living standard of Nigerians.

“Before the discovery of crude, agriculture was the main source of our national revenue, but with the discovery of oil, we relegated it to the background.

“The three tiers of government must place premium on agriculture. Irrespective of our positions in the society, we must go back to agriculture to ensure food security.

“If youths and other Nigerians embrace farming, it will not only reduce over dependence on oil, hardship and economic challenges facing the nation will become a thing of the past.

“Prices of food items have sky-rocketed. There is need for the government to invest in agriculture.

“The planting season is around the corner. As a stakeholder and politician, I will support my constituents who are into farming with yam seedlings and other grains to enhance their productivity,’’ he said.

Bisong advised youths to shun idleness, embrace skill acquisition programmes and engage in other meaningful activities to make them self-reliant.

He assured his constituents of his commitment to initiate people-oriented programmes that would improve their standard of living.

Lawmaker trains Ebonyi youths in fish production

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, Rep Linus Okorie has facilitated the training of over 50 youths of Ebonyi State in fish production.

“Even if we have all the food, we still need the safest protein which is fish. Since we produce considerable quantity of food in Ebonyi state, we are going to complement it with fish production so that we can attain self sufficiency.”

Okorie urged the trainees to share the knowledge from the training with others so that the state could boast of having enough fish farmers.

“Our plan is not just to train you but to imbibe in you so that you become masters in fish production, because we have plans for food chain that includes marketing of the products.

“We need to build local capacity on fish production, it will be followed with fish driers and we will create value chain which will bring about jobs for hundreds in fish business,” said Okorie.

He urged them to ensure they form themselves into cooperative groups, which he said will give them additional support such as loan facilities for greater fish production.

The Chief trainer, Dr. Chuks Onuoha from the Federal College of fisheries, urged the participants to adequately utilize the learning and support facilities that will be given to them after the training, noting that after the training they would have the potential of making good leaving from the business.

Some of the participants who spoke  after the training said it was a great opportunity offered to them. Before now I was into fishery but now with the knowledge I have gathered, I will go back fully fortified.

“The only problem I had was finance but with the support we have received, I am better off. We will form ourselves into cooperative societies and we will achieve greatness.

Another participant, Mrs. Nnennaya Eze, from Ohaozara local government said the training was very good and encouraging. “Its something that empowers someone. You can do it on your own once you put what it takes. Its for you so that you can get engaged in economic venture.
