  • Lawmaker to traders: avoid arbitrary hike in commodities’ prices

Chairman, Sokoto State House of Assembly’s Committee on Commerce and Industry Alhaji Tanimu Kyadawa, has charged traders in the state to desist from arbitrary hike in prices of commodities.
Kyadawa told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto that stopping the habit would ease the sufferings of the residents of the state.
He said: “We in the state House of Assembly had since passed a bill that led to the creation of a commodity board in the state. This is in order to assist the traders and the people in conducting their businesses with ease.
“So our traders should reciprocate this gesture and control all prices of commodities.
“Moreover, we have realised that it is only in Sokoto that the traders exhibit such obnoxious habit.
“Therefore, we will be more proactive and block all leakages, for the revival of the trade in the state.”
The lawmaker hailed Governor Aminu Tambuwal for constituting a task force to oversee the sales and distribution of petroleum products in the state.
He said: “This has since become a source of pride to the present administration, as we have realised the impact of such gesture in our daily affairs”.
He appealed to the people to be more patient, assuring,” the storms will soon be over.”
Kyadawa also urged Nigerians to always pray for the success of the nation’s leaders, at the three tiers of government.

  • APC is on course, says lawmaker

APC is on course, says lawmaker

Lagos State House of Assembly member Hon. Rotimi Abiru has urged critics of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government to have a rethink. He said APC has provided responsible leadership for the country.
The lawmaker who spoke at a meeting of the Mandate Group, Bariga, Lagos said the APC led government was better than the leadership provided by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the country.
He said he issue of security, infrastructural decay, poor economy and corruption was being tackled at the highest level. Abiru added that the APC has restored confidence in the people.
He said: “I must say the APC is far better than the PDP. As I speak today, we can see that security has improved; the income of government has improved in Lagos State and federation as well. The issue of corruption is being tackled headlong.
“The APC has restored confidence in the people, the investors have equally been assured of better days and Nigeria is on the course of overcoming its challenges. The recession people are talking about is not limited to Nigeria; it is a global issue which affected many countries with a mono economy.
“Nigeria for instance, depends on oil, this has grossly affected the country’s standing. That is the mistake the past leaders made by refusing to tap into other potentials in the country. That is why we are where we are today.”
The lawmaker stressed that APC was doing everything possible to ensure that peace returned to the Niger Delta region, noting that the place must be stable in order to stabilise the economy.
“The Niger Delta challenge the country cannot gloss over, but we thank God the issue are being adequately tackled. The Vice President Yemi Osibanjo is in the Niger Delta trying to broker peace between the people and government.
“We thank God the prices of oil and other petroleum products are now going up in the international market. I do hope that government will be consistent with its fiscal policy and blueprint. If it is done this way, I hope the country will overcome its challenges in due course.”
He called on Nigerians to pay their taxes, noting that it puts money in the economy.
“We all have a role to play in making the country great again. We have to pay our taxes; this is what the government uses to execute projects. Government is about you and I, so we must all play our role adequately to make the country great again.”
Abiru said the Mandate Group, Bariga was meeting to prepare its members for future election and to take actions against divisive elements in their midst.
“I thinks this an appropriate time to reinvent the group, when some people are trying to undermine our great leader, we have to move together to ensure that such conduct don’t sail through.
“I thank God today, that Mandate Group is a reality that is why we have this great turnout when we invited them for a meeting. All that we are doing today is to uphold the dreams of our great leader. That is to uphold the tenet of the progressives and to give maximum support to our leader.”

  • Brace for leadership, lawmaker challenges youths

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Segun Olulade, has urged youths to brace up for leadership positions because they have something the whole world is waiting for.

The lawmaker, who represents Epe 2 Constituency, stated this in his welcome address at the inauguration and orientation programme for 2017 ‘Academy Youths’ which featured the induction of 100 youths into the Eleniyan Cares Leadership Foundation at Ikeja.

Olulade, who founded the foundation, told the youths that leadership is not about wealth or position but influencing and expanding one’s network including one’s ability to keep giving.

“You can be that leader in whatever area you choose to. We believe you have something the whole world is waiting for. You have what it takes to rule your world, influence and impact your world positively.

“Don’t let anybody tell you it is impossible; just have a positive attitude. What qualifies you to be here today is because you are a leader once you can influence one person,” Olulade said.

The lawmaker who is the chairman, House Committee on Health Services, said the foundation is investing in the 100 pioneer inductees hoping that “in 10 years time, we will be raising leaders in all parts of the continent.”

Speaking with reporters, Olulade said the induction is a follow-up to the 1000 youths summit he organised at Epe earlier in 2016.

“The Academy is a platform on which we are going to develop them and make sure that the vision that they have in leading people is not jettisoned. In the next one year, we expect them to have done something for themselves, make impact in their world, contribute to the development of their society; and these are the people we are going to showcase in our next summit.

“We will also follow them up, add value to whatever thing they desire to do in whatever area they have chosen. We are going to have personal contact with everyone of them and get involved in their day-to-day activities. If there is any one of them that has any challenge, it becomes the responsibility of the foundation.

“We are in it together, it is about training them to stand on their own when nobody is there. They can as well influence and make impact in their world,” Olulade said.

He added: “Ambode has turned Lagos to a paradise within short time of his administration. He decided to run the state on tripod, because of his determination to turn the economy of the metropolis into the third largest in Africa.
“His determination and commitment is easy for everyone to see, because he has continued to deliver good governance, infrastructural development and people-centred policies. He has collaborated with the Lagos State House of Assembly to achieve his aim.”
The lawmaker has also called for a reduction of the benefits that acrues to political office holders, saying that it would reduce friction and violence among politicians.
He said: “There should be a privision in the electoral code that cautions people that instigate violence before and after elections.”

  • Fire: Lawmaker consoles YABATECH students

The Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Education, Comrade Aminu Sulaiman has commiserated with students who got injured and lost properties in the fire that engulfed the Bakassi Girls’ Hostel of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) on November 23, 2016.

Sulaiman also absolved the Management of the institution of wrong doing in managing the incident, praising it for its “sensitivity to the need to protect lives and property at all times.”

Sulaiman, who visited the college to investigate the incident, said he did not find evidence that supported claims of negligent by the Dr Margaret Kudirat Ladipo-led institution.

He said: “It is good we sacrificed time to come. The impression given by petition writers was a far cry from what we met on ground.

“There were insinuations of negligence on the part of the college. Some even claimed students were still in the hospital.  In another document, there was a claim that the fire resulted from the fact that the Management let out 80 per cent of the space. It is satisfying we embarked on this trip because, we were able to see things for ourselves and where the truth lies.

“I am personally satisfied that we visited today. We are not disappointed because we have not found anything to indicate ineptitude on the part of the Management. This is an incident that could happen anywhere.”

The chairman interacted with students around the hostel, and expressed the sympathy of the entire House, and that of his committee to them promising that the “struggle continues, as victory is sure.”

The students appreciated the concerns demonstrated by the Committee’s visit.

Dr Ladipo explained that fire gutted the hostel following a surge after power was restored on the fateful day.

She said, about 600 students were housed on the two-floor hostel, and that the students were evacuated moments after the outbreak.

A total of 21 students, she said, were rushed to the College Medical Centre, of which 13 were later referred to the Military Hospital, Yaba, “which opened their facility to our students and gave us the required support. All the students have since been discharged.”

She also expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Emergence Relief Agency for the support received by the college during the emergency as well as the Federal Fire Service and the University of Lagos.

Dr. Ladipo said the insurance company had been notified and the compensation was being considered under the fire and special perils policy.
