Avoid online acts you won’t be proud of, teenagers urged at LCC Youth Week

Youths have been advised to be mindful of how they use social media. This advice was dropped at a tech talk hosted by the Youth Committee of Lagos Country Club, Ikeja on Saturday.

Delivering the talk tagged: ‘The pros and cons of Social Media’, Fortune Okoye, a young tech entrepreneur, said while social media can be used for many positive things, youths should be conscious of their trails when using the internet or any social media.

“When using the internet, try and avoid anything you know that would make you beg the police or that you would not be proud of,” Okoye said.

“Don’t be tempted and think what you’re doing online cannot be accessible by anyone. In today’s world, the only thing that cannot be accessed is what has not been done.”

The talk which was part of the Youth Week of the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, was attended by teenagers and followed by a teenagers party.

According to the Chairman of the Youth Committee of the Club, Sesan Asani, “teenagers are the bridge between children and adults and the Youth Week is part of activities to embrace them into the club activities so that they do not feel left out.”

Earlier, teenagers had engaged in Water Polo, Football and Basketball games on Thursday and Friday.

The Youth Week was then rounded off with a pool party on Saturday which was graced by hip hop artiste, Clever Jay.

  • LCC security operatives arrest 35 suspected criminals

Not less than 35 suspected criminals were arrested and  prosecuted at the Lagos  State Special Task Force Court, Oshodi by the combined dedicated security operatives of Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC).

The Managing Director of the company, Mr Mubashiru Hassan, made this known in a press statement during the week.

He stated the suspected criminals were arrested during a night operation tagged “Flush Out Night Marauders from the Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway corridor” carried out at the pedestrian bridge and the overhead Jubilee Bridge,  including bus stops from the Law School to the Abraham Adesanya roundabout.

Hassan noted that the operation, which commenced last Wednesday, lasted four hours.

He said: “Acting on a tip-off, our combined dedicated security patrol teams of the police and Man O War personnel swooped on the area at night and arrested the suspected criminals who always lurked around to dispossess innocent commuters of their hard earned valuables at night.

“ It is our responsibility to protect lives and property of road users along the Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe corridor, hence we will spare no effort at ensuring that criminals have no hiding place in our catchment area. This operation is a continuous exercise and anybody seen to be a threat to lives and property along the axis will be dealt with in accordance with the relevant laws of Lagos State, “ he said.

  • LCC warns security operatives breaking traffic laws

Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC) has decried the rate at which uniformed security operatives violate traffic rules with motorcycles on the Etiosa-Lekki-Epe Expressway and the Lekki /Ikoyi Link Bridge.

The Managing Director of the  company, Mr Mubashiru Hassan, made this known in a press statement during the week.

He lamented that the rate at which these uniformed security operatives breached traffic rules with impunity was becoming embarrassing as most of them had turned to commercial motorcycle riders on the expressway.

”Only 200cc engine capacity motorcycles are allowed on the expressway. All lower engine capacity motorbikes are prohibited from plying the expressway and the Lekki /Ikoyi Link Bridge under the Lagos State traffic laws.

“Within the last six months, not less than 100 commercial motorcycle riders popularly known as okada had been arrested and prosecuted by our dedicated security patrol teams of the police and Man O War Security personnel at the Ikoyi Special Offences Magistrate Court. Most of them were fined while others had their motorcycles seized and handed over to the Lagos State Task Force at Oshodi for possible crushing, “ he said.

The company boss noted that the notorious of the traffic offenders were the uniformed security operatives with the Nigerian Army and Police Force respectively.

”These sets of offenders breach traffic rules on motorcycles of smaller engine capacities while in their uniforms or parade their identity cards with impunity. This is a dangerous trend that will not be condoned on the Etiosa-Lekki-Epe Expressway,”he said.

Hassan appealed to the Army and Police authorities to call their men to order as their actions constitute a threat to lives and properties on the expressway and a serious breach of the existing laws of Lagos State.

“Personnel of the security agencies are expected to be seen as law enforcement agents rather than law breakers, “ he said.

  • LCC to get tough with tipper drivers

The Managing Director, Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC), Mr. Mubashiru Hassan, has warned tipper lorry drivers plying the Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway to desist from carrying wet sand on the expressway or risk being prosecuted for violating relevant laws.

He gave this warning during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Eti-Osa Lekki headquarters of the company with baales and community leaders in its catchment area.

Hassan noted that the tipper lorry drivers had caused untold damage to the expressway because of the salty nature of the wet sand spilling on the road.

“We have been prosecuting them in the magistrate’s courts for committing this offence and the courts have been imposing heavy fines on them, yet the fines have not deterred them from carrying wet sand on our roads.

“It got to a point whereby we felt the courts should impose community service sanctions on them, as such punishment may probably stop them from committing this offence, but this has also proved not to be punitive enough. Now, we are left with no option than to appeal to the law courts to impose the maximum punishment of jail terms if they do not desist from carrying wet sand on the expressway,” he said.

The company boss, who decried the alarming rate of street kid beggars and hawkers in its catchment area, said: “The situation is now embarrassing as beggars now have the effrontery to knock on motorists’ doors and windows to beg for alms. We shall no longer treat this situation with kid gloves as it has become a threat to the lives and properties of residents in the various host communities. Consequently, any beggar apprehended will be made to face the wrath of the laws of the state.”

Hassan appealed to the community leaders at the meeting to prevail on their subjects not to dump refuse indiscriminately on the streets, but to put it in refuse bins provided by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) at designated points.

“The Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway is now an international route, hence the company is doing everything possible to make it clean at all times,” he said.

Meanwhile, not less than six commercial motor cycle riders, popularly known as okada riders have been arrested for contravening traffic rules on the Lekki-Ikoyi Tp3 link bridge.

According to the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of LCC, Mr Solomon Tolofari, they were arrested for riding one way along the bridge on Thursday.

He lamented that most of the arrested motorcyclists were uniformed security operatives.

“They are fond of using their uniforms to break traffic rules, most especially on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge. We appeal to the relevant authorities concerned to call this set of people to order,” Tolofari said.

He said the six motorcycles had been handed over to the Lagos State Task Force in Oshodi for crushing.

  • LCC security operatives arrest two armed robbers

Two suspected armed robbers were penultimate Saturday arrested by the dedicated security patrol team of the police and security officials of Lekki Concessions Company Limited (LCC).

The suspected armed robbers, Adebayo Ayomide and Isaac John, were arrested on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge after the toll gate inward Lekki at about 8.50 pm of the day.

According to the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of LCC, Mr. Solomon Tolofari, the two men were caught while robbing motorists in traffic immediately after the toll gate.

“The proactive nature of the dedicated police patrol team of the company on duty at the toll gate led to the arrest of the two armed bandits who were armed with a dane gun and machete,”he said.

He noted that the two armed robbers have since been taken to Maroko Police Station for further interrogation and prosecution after items stolen from the motorists were recovered.

Tolofari, who reiterated the resolve of the company to protect lives and property on the Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway, advised motorists plying the expressway to constantly take precautionary security measures to protect their lives and property.

“We have always warned motorists plying the expressway to stop patronizing hawkers on the road. Some of them are criminals and social miscreants who are on the road to dispossess motorists of their hard earned money and valuables.

“On our part, we shall continue to do our best to make the Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway safe for motorists and all road users.”

  • LCC to get tough with hawkers

The Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC) is to impose stiffer sanctions against hawkers on the Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway.

The Managing Director of the Company, Mr. Mubashiru Hassan, gave this hint during the week in a statement while reviewing the activities of the hawkers on the expressway.

Hassan said even though the efforts of the company against the hawkers in the last two years had yielded positive results, the company was still not comfortable sighting hawkers in some of its catchment areas.

He pointed out that the activities of the hawkers not only impede the free flow of traffic, “but also constitute a threat to lives and properties on the expressway. Some of them are rogues pretending to be hawkers. Their activities on the expressway constitute an embarrassment, hence the company is seeking stiffer penalties in conjunction with the court of competent jurisdiction in Lagos State in order to take them away from our catchment areas”.

The company boss noted that one of the cardinal functions of the company is to protect lives and properties on the expressway, hence it would employ all means to eradicate all activities that constitute a threat to lives and properties along the axis.

He warned motorists plying the expressway not to patronize hawkers in order not to endanger their lives and properties.

Meanwhile, not less than 20 people, including hawkers, have been arrested and prosecuted by the combined security operatives of LCC at the Ikoyi Special Offences Magistrate Court for hawking and obstructing the free flow of traffic on the Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway in the last two weeks.
