  • LCC charges motorists plying Lekki-Epe Expressway on safety measures

Motorists, especially commercial drivers plying the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway, have been charged to take precautionary measures to secure lives and properties of their passengers in the ember months.

The Managing Director of the Lekki Concession Company (LCC), Mr Mubashiru Hassan, gave this charge , while speaking on the preparation of the company to ease the traffic flow and secure lives and properties on the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway during the last quarter of the year.

He said apart from the “zero tolerance to potholes standpoint of the company on our roads, the LCC dedicated a joint security patrol team comprising the police, Lagos State Traffic Management Agencies (LASTMA), Man O War and other traffic management agencies to embark on a 24-hour surveillance patrol to protect lives and properties and ensure a smooth flow of traffic on the expressway during this sensitive period”.

Hassan said the security patrol team of the company had been well mobilised with necessary security surveillance equipment to ensure strict adherence to traffic rules by motorists on the expressway.

“We will not tolerate any disregard to traffic rules on the expressway as violators would be made to face the wrath of the laws of Lagos State,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the company, Mr Solomon Tolofari,  said 30 persons had been arrested and prosecuted by the security operatives of the company for various traffic offences at the Ikoyi Special Offences Magistrate’s Court in the last three weeks.

He advised motorists and residents along the corridor “to stop patronising hawkers who are daily being arrested and prosecuted for obstructing the free flow of traffic on the expressway.

“Some of these hawkers are criminals who disguise with their goods to perpetrate crimes on the expressway. Therefore, motorists and residents should steer clear of them in order not to fall prey to their antics. On our part, we will continue to do everything humanly possible to secure lives and properties on the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway,”he said.

“During this period, we all know how busy the roads will be. Commercial activities will increase as a result of people shopping for the festival. It is in the light of this that we decided to tighten up security on our roads to avoid the loss of lives and properties, knowing full well how reckless and restless motorists, most especially commercial drivers, are on the roads to make more money during the festival.

“Our security patrol teams are well kitted and mobilised with all security surveillance equipment to ensure strict adherence to traffic rules by motorists on our roads, “he said.

Mr Hassan warned that any motorist found wanting or driving recklessly with flagrant disregard to traffic rules shall be arrested and prosecuted according to the laws of Lagos State.

Meanwhile, not less than 20 persons, including motorists, motorcyclists and tricyclists, popularly known as okada and keke Marwa riders respectively, have been arrested by the security operatives of the company for various traffic offences on the Lekki-Epe Expressway within the last two weeks.

  • LCC uplifts communities with CSR projects

Not less than ten community development projects have been executed by Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC) within the last six months as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility to communities in its catchment areas.

The Head of Engineering and Project Management of the company, Engineer Wahab Adeyemi, made this known in a press statement.

Some of these projects he said included the clearing of the Ado Badore Road drainage; construction of a slab on the access culvert to the Jammatul Islamiyyah Primary School, Ikota; construction of culvert and clearing of drainage at Ajah Market by Berger Road in Eti-Osa West Local Council Development Area (LCDA); expansion and construction of additional access road into Ikota Market and grading of Alhaujaj Road in Igbokusu village and Hakeem Dickson Street, along Elf Road, Lekki.

According to him, the execution of these projects was part of the company’s resolve to give back to the communities in its catchment areas.

“In some cases, the company impacts positively on communities outside its path of way by virtue of their proximity to communities in our catchment areas. Even though the Ado Badore Road, off Ajah, is not within the right-of-way of the company, LCC engaged a contractor who clears the drainage on a daily basis to prevent flooding which might damage our road. To solve the perennial problem of flooding in Ajah Market, we had to construct and clear the drainage,” he said.

Adeyemi noted that the company had to expand and construct additional access road  leading to  Ikota Market in order to solve the problem of traffic gridlock experienced by road users trying to get to the market on a daily basis.

  • LCC beefs up security on Eti-Osa-Epe Expressway

In its efforts to beef up security on the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lekki Concessions Company Limited (LCC) has introduced a fleet of motorcycles as part of its patrol team to protect lives and property along the expressway.

The Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the company, Mr. Solomon Tolofari, made this known in a statement during the week.

He said the Motorcycle Patrol Team was introduced into the security surveillance system of the company in order to curb criminal activities and protect lives and property along the expressway.

“This Motorcycle Patrol Team was introduced into our security network system in order to achieve zero tolerance to crimes on our highway. They would work at night in conjunction with other security agencies to see that the expressway is safe for road users and those living along the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe corridor.

“This is part of our resolve to give value for money because if there is free flow of traffic and the expressway is safe for all, the economic activities along the corridor will blossom unhindered”.

Tolofari pointed out that the company had succeeded in getting a court injunction banning any mechanic activity around the Jakande pedestrian bridge which had served as a hideout in the area.

“We are not resting on our oars to see that criminals do not have a hiding place in our catchment areas of operation. We have been synergizing with the Police Rapid Respond Squad (RRS) to further stem criminal activities and protect lives and property along the expressway. The co-operation of all the Divisional Police Officers (DPO) on the axis is also commendable as this has gone a long way in making the corridor safe,”he said.

  • LCC assures road users of improved service delivery

The Managing Director of Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC), Mr. Mubashiru Hassan, has assured motorists plying the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway and residents along the axis that the company would upgrade its services to serve them better.

He gave this assurance during a meeting with a three-man delegation of the Lekki Residents’ Association led by Mr. Segun Ladega.

Hassan said the recent review of the toll tariff at the Admiralty circle and Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge toll plazas was not meant to put burden on motorists, but to take care of exigencies in the costs of operations of the company and to upgrade its services to the people of the state.

“The aim of the company is to upgrade its services for motorists and residents in our catchment areas to enjoy a first-class treatment on the expressway.

Hassan noted that while trying to serve them better they would need to be patient with the state government as ‘’ this improved services would be taken care of on gradual basis”.

He assured the Lekki Residents’ Association that their demands would be looked into for a better working relationship.

  • LCC hails motorists’ ‘compliance’ with new toll

THE introduction of a higher toll took off yesterday at the Lekki Expressway and Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge without hitch,  the Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC) has said.

LCC Managing Director Muhammed Hassan told reporters yesterday that there was ‘’massive compliance by motorists’’.

The company,  on Monday,  announced an upward review in toll, with effect from yesterday.

According to him, the increment was an economic decision done at the right time so that LCC would not continue to increase the tariff every now and then.

Hassan said the last review was seven years ago, adding that, if LCC did not act now, it would  be doing the review  yearly.

On the timing, the LCC boss said: “The more we wait, the more we experience new issues. In November, last year, we made an attempt to carry out the review but the governor was not happy. He asked us to make more consultations which we have done now. It was called off and despite that, motorists were already paying and complying. We sat down and started this during the Christmas but later stepped it down. We decided to tackle it once-and-for all and take care of the challenges.”

Hassan urged motorists to embrace e-tag, stressing that its users were entitled to between 10 and 50 per cent discounts depending on their usage.

Hailing motorists, he said: “If there is no compliance, by now, you would have seen protests. We are however, in a democratic government; there is right of choice for those who are willing to pay and those who don’t want to pay.”

LCC Deputy General Manager,  Customer Services and Marketing, Adelola Hassan said e-tag was not elitist.

She said: “e-tag is an electronic device that allows easy passage. It has a card that complements it. For the e-tag, we have corporate, commercial and individual’s category. It is not elitist, even the Danfo drivers use it. We need your vehicle license, proof of ownership and any valid identity card like national identity card, international passport or driver’s license to register you”.

But some motorists and passengers  plying the Lekki-Ajah Highway expressed mixed feelings over the new fee.

An interior decorator, Mrs Jane Alichi, appealed to the government to consider the prevailing economic situation and look for other avenues to absorb the cost.

A civil servant, Mr Ehijimeto Modu, appealed to the government to improve the efficiency of the alternative route.

An information communication technology (ICT) expert, Mrs Unera Markus urged the government to consider the wages of road users before  increasing the toll.

An engineer, Gbenga Akinlolu, said any increase that would guarantee efficiency of service delivery was good.

“The margin of the increase should not be much considering the kind of services they render. The current economic realities call for a review. The services they render on the axis are enormous such that if your vehicle breaks down the LCC personnel will assist you. They also provide security and those accompanying services come at a cost. I expected them to consult with the transporters and other stakeholders before the review,” Akinlolu said.

  • LCC engages Chevron to ease traffic on Eti-Osa Lekki- Epe expressway

LCC engages Chevron to ease traffic on Eti-Osa Lekki- Epe expressway

The management of Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC), has met with Chevron Nigeria Limited to proffer a permanent solution to the traffic gridlock currently being experienced at the Chevron roundabout on the Eti-Osa/Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos, Nigeria, especially during rush hour.

It was gathered that following the conversion of the roundabouts at Chisco and Jakande to signalised intersection by the Lagos State Government to ease traffic flow on the expressway, traffic previously held back at these roundabouts has now been flushed to the other roundabouts along the axis including Chevron roundabout.
They agreed on measures to improve the traffic situation on Chevron drive which includes the removal of some of the speed bumps and reduction of the zebra crossing from three to one on this road. The effectiveness of this will be monitored overtime.

  • LCC, residents parley on Lekki access road

AFTER series of meetings, contractors are to resume the construction on more road arteries in the Lekki axis of Lagos to decongest traffic on the Lekki-Ajah Expressway.

The development came on the heels of the resolution of the misunderstanding between Messrs Lekki Concession Company (LCC), the firm franchised by the Lagos State Government to upgrade the high and residents of Still Water Gardens Estate.

It was part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that LCC will open up an access road to create an alternative to the tolled highway as it will be useful to residents when completed.

But, the construction of the network of roads was stalled halfway following the uncooperative posture of residents of the estate, who believed a road through their estate would worsen traffic.

The agreement between the parties was reached after a parley by LCC officials, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and representative of the residents’ association.

It was agreed at the parley that work should resume for an immediate completion of the road.

According to LCC Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Shakirat Babatunde, residents of the Still Waters Gardens Estate have realised that building the road will decongest traffic in Lekki.

She said the construction of the road was part of the original master plan for Lekki since 2008, adding that it will pass through the Oando Filling Station in Lekki.

The residents had pleaded with the LCC not to build the road, insisting that it will worsen the traffic situation within the Lekki axis.

According to them, opening up the access will worsen the security situation in the area. They had suggested to the LCC that rather than extending the road to the Jankande end of Lekki, it should stop at the estate gate.

But, Mrs Babatunde argued that the proposed project will create multiple access for road users with no danger posed to the Still Waters Gardens Estate.

Her words: “The proposed road will create multiple points of entry and exit for the estate residents and other road users. By that singular road construction, over 80 per cent of the pressure on the Lekki axis will be taken away from road users.

“It currently takes people about three to four hours to move through the roads but on completion of this access road, such challenge is going to be resolved.”

Speaking further, the LCC chief assured residents of the company’s support to the estate.

She said the LCC suspended work to allow for dialogue with the residents in the spirit of fair play. “After our dialogue, we have found better ways to go about the road. We will ensure that the end result will be of greater benefits to Lagosians. We do not believe in imposing our ideas on others and that prompted us to push for this dialogue,” Mrs. Babatunde said.

LASTMA’s General Manager Mr Bashiru Braimah urged the LCC management to avail his agency with the traffic management and impact assessment plans of the project.

He said such documents will equip the authority with a better understanding  of the traffic flow to further decongest traffic in the course of the construction.
