• Eko Disco to recover N1.3bn debts

Eko Disco to recover N1.3bn debts

The Management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EKEDCP) on Thursday said that over N 1.33 billion was yet to be collected from customers for their bills in March.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Oladele Amoda, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ consultative forum with Lekki customers in Lagos to rub minds on how to address payment of electricity bills.

NAN reports that the forum is tagged “prompt payment of electricity bills to enhance effective power supply’’.

Amoda, who was represented by the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr Sam Nwaire, said that the company recovered N4.8 billion payment out of N6.1 billion owed by customers for March.

He said that the company was still battling to recover over N.13 billion debt being owed by customers for the month, adding that such huge debts had affected the company’s major projects.

According to him, energy supply to the company from the national grid has increased from 150 megawatts to 300 megawatts in the month.

“This has boosted effective power distributions to customers but yet majority of the customers refused payment.

“In spite of the quantum of supply distributed to customers in the Month of March, large numbers of customers were yet to turn out for payment.

“We have equally recorded over N6.5 billion energy consumed by customers for the month of April but we are yet to compute the final payment chats and outstanding customers debt profile since the month is still running,’’ he said.

Amoda said that the 20 per cent compensation promised to offer anyone who reported energy theft by unscrupulous elements was yielding good result.

He said that the company recorded high rate of customers who came to report those engaging in such act.

According to him, we have received over 10 people who came to report those who are by-passing meters.

“A task force has been set up to inspect houses of consumers and impose a penalty of N1m on anyone caught in energy theft.

“The company would henceforth commence effective prosecution of energy theft suspects and also publish their names in the national dailies.

“We appeal to our customers to avoid engaging in by-passing the meters because it’s criminal and punishable under Electricity Regulation Code of Conduct Act,’’ he said.

On metering, Amoda said that the company had commenced deployment of the first phase of over 600 free pre-paid meters to all Eko disco’s district area.

He said that the company would ensure that over 140,000 free pre-paid meters are installed in every district areas before the end of the year while appealing to residents to ensure prompt payment of their bills.

The Eko disco boss said that about seven suspected vandals were arrested in various locations of its operations and were facing prosecution.

He said that one of them was caught at Thomas Street in Surulere area of Lagos when he was caught in the act by a security guard in the area.

The EKEDCP helmsman said that the suspect was caught trying to cart away 4core/70mm cable at Eko Club sub-station.

He urged communities to be vigilant and guard against activities of vandals in their area, adding that the company would work hand in hand with the police to ensure that the suspects and others would be duly prosecuted in the court.

Amoda said that the measure became necessary against the backdrop of over N1 billion lost to various forms of electricity theft and vandalism in the zone.

He said that electricity materials, such as cables and wires, had either been stolen or vandalised within its operations.

He said some areas where equipment vandalism had been rampant included Apapa, Mushin, Ikoyi, Ajegunle and FESTAC of Lagos State.

According to Mr. Amoda, equipment such as 300KVA and 500KVA are being destroyed in Eko Disco monthly.

“Vandalism of electricity installations in the areas has become a problem, and within the past four months, the unit has recorded further acts of vandalism of nine transformer substations,” he said.

• Man gets N500, 000 bail for alleged theft of jewelry

A 23-year-old, Paul Thomas, who allegedly had in his possession stolen gold watch and rings valued at N2.1 million, was on Thursday charged before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The accused, who is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and unlawful possession of stolen items, however, denied the charges.

The accused, according to Police Prosecutor Richard Odigie, committed the offences with another man still at large sometime in February at Alpha Beach, Lekki, Lagos.

“One Michael Kors watch and four rings valued at N2.1 millon were found on the accused during a `stop-and-search’ by the police.”

He said the items were stolen by the accused’s accomplice (at large), a security guard, from his employer, who was out of the country.

ASP Odigie alleged that the accused received the stolen jewellery knowing full well that they were stolen and ownership was traced to the complainant, the employer.

The offences contravened Sections 326 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 326 stipulates 14 years imprisonment, while Section 409 provides a two-year jail term for offenders.

The Magistrate, Mrs F.O. Ikobayo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said one of the sureties must be a relation of the accused, while the other surety must be a community leader.

Further hearing in the case has been fixed for April 12.

• Be careful of your relationships, cleric tells youths

Be careful of your relationships, cleric tells youths

The Associate Pastor of Kingsword International church, Lekki, Ms Oluyele Olubiyi has advised Christian youths to shun all form of ungodly relationship as they are capable of distracting them away from God’s purpose for their lives.

Olubiyi said this at a seminar for youths organised by the Youth Fellowship of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Higher Ground Parish, Alakuko, Lagos.

The event tagged Rethinking Relationship brought together over 100 youths drawn from across Lagos state. It features prayers, bible teachings, song rendition, networking session among others.

She said that many youths have become a prey and have lost their focus and purpose in life because of wrong relationships, adding that any relationship that does not have its root in Jesus Christ is prone to abuse, heartache and disappointments.

She noted that everything in once life is created just the way God wants it. We are not an unwanted pregnancy. God was not distracted when we were conceived; hence we must involve God in all that we do, especially in the relationships that we keep.

She stressed that we must love God and when we are in love with someone, we do all in our power to make them happy and fulfil their heart’s desires. It’s God’s heart desire that we stay pure and remain a virgin till we get married.

Olubiyi added that for young people who are confused and bound by pressure to do wrong, said “you need to speak with someone. Don’t be ashamed. You are not the only one struggling to live a life of purity.
She opined that staying sexually pure for Christian youth is not just an old time tale but God’s command for his children who want to please him.
“You can decide to use your background as a reason to wallow in self-pity and bad decisions or you can choose to make something good with your life. The choice is always with the individual”, she said.

In his words, the President of the Youth Fellowship, Kehinde OLUSHOLA said that the seminar is set toward helping teenagers and youth avoid the pitfalls of moral degradation, domestic violence and increasingly cases of a divorce rate in Nigeria.

Banky W loses awards to house fire

R &B singer, Banky W, has survived a fire outbreak which razed a part of his Lekki residence early Tuesday morning. The fire which started at about 6am was said to have been caused by a faulty air conditioner.
The actor/singer recounted his experience on his Instagram page.
So there’s good news and bad news. The good news is… I’m thanking God that I’m alive to give the bad news as a testimony,” he stated.
Narrating the incident, Banky said that he was lying awake in bed at about 6am, when he started perceiving smoke and realized it was coming from outside his door.
Opened it to see the whole stairway was filled with huge gusts of black smoke/soot, and a fire was burning stuff downstairs. The smoke was so much I couldn’t get down past it to see the source of the flames. Rushed back into my room and climbed down from the 2nd floor balcony with my dog… and then got help from the amazing workers and neighbours who helped me put out the flames,” he wrote.
According to the artiste, the fire was caught early enough and the damage wasn’t so bad, although, he said, it basically burnt some of the stuff that was around it.
So awards, portraits, and some small electronics. But thank God, Duke and I are alive and well. We only had to form James Bond and climb down from the top floor balcony LOL Thank God for my neighbors and the amazing workers in and around the compound for helping us escape via the balcony, helping put out the fire, and helping with the aftermath/cleaning,” he added.
The officials of the Lagos State Fire Service were said to have arrived the scene of the fire by 7.30 am and helped to stop the fire.
