  • How we robbed banks in Lekki, Ikorodu, by suspects

How we robbed banks in Lekki, Ikorodu, by suspects

Four suspected members of the gang that attacked two commercial banks in Ikorodu, Lagos State, relived  yesterday their bloody exploits, claiming responsibility for other bank robberies.

Monday Omoboye, 39, aka Alarm Blow;  Bright Agbojule, 25, Monday Ikuesan, 37, and Promise Abiwa,  20,  were paraded by Police Commissioner (CP) Kayode Aderanti.

Their arrests came after soldiers intercepted one of the gang members who had mint notes with bank seals on them.

Following a tip-off by the soldiers in Ondo State to the Lagos CP, the four suspects were rounded up. Two Lexus Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and an Infiniti SUV with registration numbers KRD29DA, 642DQ and EKY641DB were recovered from them.

The suspects claimed that their 18-man gang, aside raiding the banks in Lekki,  Ijede and Ebute (both in Ikorodu), also engaged in pipeline vandalism and illegal bunkering.

Giving an account on the operation, Agbojole, who said they were boys in the gang, told reporters that their leaders were Million and Kakado.

Agbojole claimed that he was contacted a week to the operation, adding that he joined because of poverty.

According to Agbojole, he was a timber worker at Ebute-Metta before joining the group.

Asked about the woman, was who was said to have led the gang, Agbojole said: “There was no woman in the group. Our leaders are Million and Kakado.

“We planned the operation from Ishawo creeks. Million and his men came to us and told us about the operation. Million brought guys from Warri.

“It was from the creeks that we planned the whole thing and this is my first operation with them. I was among those who kept watch along the road. I was given a Pump Action gun. We had eight guns and two Pump Action rifles.

“I am a student of College of Education, Ekiadolor. I did not follow them to Lekki or any other robbery but I know it was the gang that attacked those banks.

“We left very early for the Ikorodu operation and it was some of Million’s boys who went into the police station; I did not go with them.

Million and Kakado brought the dynamite used to open the bank doors and  the guns. They were the ones who also taught us how to use the guns.

“I do not know how much was gotten because it was the leaders who counted and shared the money.  My share was N2million from where I bought a Lexus jeep for N1. 5million;  I bought jerry can for my brother to start oil bunkering; gave my wife N30, 000 for her JAMB exam and also gave my friends money.

“I was arrested in Ikorodu, where I live. My friend Akpan called me and I didn’t know that it was because the police were looking for me.”

Omoboye, a boat operator, said he usually ferried the gang for their operations.

He confessed that he had participated in all the robberies, adding that he received N400,000 for the Lekki robbery, N400,000 for Ijede and N2million for the Ogolonto attack, totalling N2.8m.

He said the group usually lodged close to their targets, noting that for the Lekki attack,  they camped in Epe.

“We went to Epe area and lodged there. I was the boat operator and I drove them in all the operations. I don’t usually leave the boat  and one or two men are left to stay with me because the gang will contact them and they will alert me when it’s time to move.

“I was contacted about one month after the Lekki operation and informed of the Ijede attack, I got N400,000 each from Lekki and Ijede. But for the Ebute business,  I was given N2million.

“I was not the one they called on the telephone.  It was one of their men before we rode to the jetty side to carry them. My boat is a fibre boat. I usually take them to the creeks in Ishawo but they don’t allow us close to where they share money.

“Our business in the Creek is illegal bunkering,  pipeline vandalism and armed robbery.  I took part in all the robberies because I was their boat operator.

“Yes I am married with five children but my wife does not know what I do,” he said.

Ikuesan, another boat operator, said his only role was ferrying the hoodlums after their boat broke down when they robbed the banks in Lekki.

He claimed that he operated a gun boat, whose owner contacted him to carry the armed robbers when their boat broke down in February.

“I am not a member of the group but I know I have carried them once. I was contacted by the owner of the gun boat to carry them because their boat broke down in the water.

“The owner was given N400,000 but he gave me N180, 000 and Baba Ibeji added N10,000, making N190, 000. I have never followed them for any operation.”

Briefing reporters, Aderanti said: ”So, on June 26, one of the armed robbers, Promise Abiwe, was traced to Igbokoda in Ondo State where he was arrested.

“On June 28, one of the key members of the gang  Monday Omoboye (aka Alarm Blow) was arrested in his hideout in Ikorodu.

“The said Monday is the boat operator who drove their speedboats in both the Lekki on June 1 and the robberies on June 24.

“On June 29, at about 4pm, one Agbojule Bright was traced to another hideout and was arrested with the Lexus Jeep, which he bought from his own share of the loot.

“These armed robbers have confessed to various armed robbery attacks both on water and highways across the country. Further investigations geared towards arresting the remnants of the gang is in progress.”

  • IPP for Lekki Free Trade Zone

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday inaugurated the new 12MW Independent Power Plant (IPP) project expected to provide uninterrupted power supply to the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ).

The LFTZ IPP built by the Chinese Railway Construction Company (CRCC), under the Build, Operate and Transfer partnership agreement, is the sixth power plant inaugurated by the administration.

The governor, who also inaugurated Candel Agrochemical Manufacturing Plant, said the facility was another milestone for the administration.

Fashola praised the stakeholders and investors for keeping faith with the government.

He said, “Today, we have lived the dream; block by block, the zone has emerged.

“This zone will outlive all of us because it will be here in another 200 years.

“So, it must grow gradually and at its own pace. Today, we have achieved another milestone.

“This place was a forest in 2007 without roads. We built roads and today, it has electricity.

“It is only a modest journey and the community will benefit.”

He urged the community to continue to support the trade zone, adding that the power plant will also supply power to houses in the area.

The governor emphasised that the road to prosperity in Nigeria is in three words: “Made in Nigeria”.

“China has shown that example and that is why it is the largest economy in the world today.

“We can replicate that achievement here and that is why it is our formidable partner.”

  • Facelift for Lekki Conservation Centre

    Facelift for Lekki Conservation Centre

The National Conservation Foundation (NCF) Biodiversity Park at the Lekki Conservation Centre has a new addition. Added to the nature park is  what is reputed to be the longest canopy walkway in Africa and  a family fun park at the degraded portion of the complex.

The aim is to use this new addition to increase the number of visitors to the park without having any negative impact on what exist there. Visiting the park has always been fun and the new addition is a further incentive to go back there. The biodiversity park is a jungle. It has tall trees covering the floor of the park. The floor is perpetually shaded from the sun with pockets of sunlight piercing through the leaves to cast bright flash here and there.

Once out of the administration building of the centre, the only noise is that of animals, most especially, the monkeys. Inside the park, the monkeys are most audacious. They hold no fear of human beings. Sometimes, it seems the animals actually expect humans to stand by the corner while they pass. The monkeys are  daring that they even make noise to attract  attention if they feel the visitors do not know they are there.

The addition of the canopy walkway has really added to the allure of the place. It is also good that the metal pillars of the walkway were built with little disturbance of the flora of the park. The aerial foot bridge is 401 metres long and 22.5 metres high.

According to the builders, it is not recommended for persons below the age of 14 years.

Even for adults, it is very challenging. It takes a lot of courage to go on it. For those afraid of heights, they should not bother.

The reward for those who go on it is a spectacular view of the park.

On the top of the canopy walkway, there were some strong-willed monkeys,   despite the fact that they saw this writer and one or two  persons coming. At a stage, one was considering going back to avoid collision with a troop of monkeys.

The monkeys were so indignant at the intrusion on their privacy that they refused to move, even when this writer decided to stay near them and took pictures. They watched lazily. They had no fear.

The other addition to the complex is a Family Fun Park that has fish pond with exotic fishes, sections for family games, barbecue section, gazebos, jungle gyms and many others. At the Family Fun Park, there are so much to do and every member of the family from the youngest to the oldest would have something to engage his attention.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola said the project was one of the efforts of his administration to develop the tourism asset of the state. He also highlighted on the need for man to protect the environment as seen in the NCF.

Mr. Disun Holloway, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism and Inter-governmental Relations, talked about the project.

“ It contributes to tourism; it contributes to local economy; that is what tourism is all about. It is to regenerate or revitalise persons working in local environment. For example, take souvenir making. When tourism goes to the market, they will buy souvenirs,”Holloway said.

Chief Philip Asiodu, the President of the foundation’s Board of Trustees, gave insight into why the NCF gave a nod to the additions .

“ It is something we have done not easily because the primary purpose here is bio-diversity. There were some degraded parts. When the Lagos State government came with the proposal that would include  a picnic park for families, we supported it. We would make sure that the activities  do not damage the primary purpose of bio-diversity.

“ So, with good planning, this has been done. We have 30 acres here . This is were you can barbecue. There are two ponds , one for Tilapia, one for exotic fish. You can come here with your family. You can play games. If you are adventurous enough, you go on the canopy walkway. And here I see many people, having amused themselves enough, they now want to see what is a nature park. They will see what we intended to do, to preserve what is left of the coastal zone flora and fauna.

“This place has been farmed before. You know if you farm and leave it for long, nature re-establishes itself. So, we think that this will increase positive publicity for this place  Many people will come here and because of that, many more will now go into the bio-diversity reserve and see what is there,”Chief Asiodu said.

He said the NCF board would make sure that the new additions did not affect the park negatively: “ We will make sure that none of the exotic animals brought into the family park goes into the biodiversity park. We bring them, quarantine them for sometime and then we keep them confined. Also, this is the only place that we have allowed exotic fish to come. We are not going to allow exotic animals in the park,”he said.

Mr. Desmond Majekodunmi, an environmentalist and a board member of the foundation also added his voice.

He said: “It is absolutely fantastic. As the governor said, nature doesn’t need humanity, nature doesn’t need mankind. If mankind left the planet tomorrow, nature would thrive. Nature doesn’t need mankind at all. But guess what? Mankind in totality, for everything he needs for survival, needs nature. So for us to be protecting something we totally need, to my limited intelligence, makes a lot of sense. So, it is absolutely fantastic that we have done some additional things that would help in the support and protection of this wonderful complex.”

He said the additions would make positive impact in the park.

“It will help us to generate funds because maintaining this place is actually very expensive and we can’t be relying on corporate donors all the time. So, this will actually help us to bring the much needed funds.

“People will come in. It will become a popular tourist site. Of course, we will charge a small fee. People will come in, they will relax here. It will definitely bring the much needed money. It also gives us an awareness tool because a lot of the problems that are associated with the degradation of nature is actually out of lack of knowledge and ignorance.

“Since time gone by, nature has always given us its tremendous abundance. We have always had so much of it that it does not really make any sense when you are telling people you can’t keep on destroying nature.

“ Yes, nature has its abundance, but with massive population growth and development of new technology which are causing even more and more problems, we are actually reaping very negative impact. So, it gives us a great opportunity to create awareness among guests that come, telling that this is a nature park, and we need to preserve and look after our natural resources.

“The founder of the NCF, the late Chief S.L.Edu saw a place where animals would be preserved just like in other countries, people would come relax within nature. That was the main thing. Do you know this place was Igbo Efon? That was a forest of the buffaloes?

“For a place to be named after a certain animal means that there must have been a lot of them here. But nobody below the age of 40 has ever seen a buffalo here. It has gone into extinction.

“So, part of the thinking was that let’s have a park where animals would be preserved and protected. Later on, as the science became more developed,  we started seeing the negative impact of humanity on nature. It became a resource centre for imparting that knowledge of the necessity to protect the environment,”Majekodunmi said.

For those who may not have visited the NCF park in recent time, it is high time they paid a return visit. Much has changed for the better there.

  • Easter fun at Lekki Beach

    Easter fun at Lekki Beach

THE reclaimed Bar Beach that has been transformed into the emerging Eko Atlantic City, Lagos used to be the most popular leisure hangout for  Lagos fun seekers during the festive and holiday periods.

However, in the absence of Bar Beach, in Victoria Island, Lagosians, indefatigable while in search of fun, have decided to move further. They still throng beaches or what is left of them on the island to catch fun.

Last week’s Easter holiday was not exception. After many  years that one last visited the Lekki Beach,  the beach’s Easter fiesta offered an opportunity to revisit and  see how  it was faring.

The number of people at the beach was lower than what it used to be in the past when the beach was in its full glory. The crowd is gone. But some die-hard beach lovers still made their way to the beach.

Nigerian music boomed from the loud speaker in the lounge. There was a children dance competition. The way the children were digging it out was as if there was a million dollar prize money at stake.

While the children were on stage, the adults were also having good times all around. Some were having family picnics.

The first thing one noticed was the rows rock barriers laid from the beach to about 50 metres into the ocean. It served as a cushion to take the strength out of the buffeting ocean waves. Outside the environmental usefulness of the rock breakers, the rocks offer vantage point to view the ocean. It is just like the Durban beach where a concrete walkway that stretches deep into the Atlantic Ocean is built.

Many visitors to the Lekki Beach, rather than stay at the beach, prefer to walk on the rocks and watch the high ocean current push waves upon waves to the shore. Occasional the current was too strong, splashing water through the rocks and the walkway where people were standing. It was fun and no one seemed to mind the cool splash.

There is just one major lounge in the whole of the beach. It is a wooden fabrication with green murals on the wall. The lounge is a storey building with bar on the ground floor  at the top where people can sit and enjoy the beach ambience. Not having so many beach lounges  may be due to low patronage of the beach. There were  other places with simply small canopies and chairs where visitors could rent, sit and relax.

The strong ocean wave has eaten up a large chunk of the  beach front, forcing people to shift back into the land.  Despite the ravish of the ocean, people were still having fun. The most popular being deeping oneself in the ocean water, allowing the strong current to splash one with white foam of the ocean water.

Along West Africa’s coast, Lagos has one of the stretch of beach front. Benin beaches have little or no white sand. Most of the beach fronts in Cotonou are simply made up of red austere ground. You get succour in places like Wyda in Casa del Papa and Togo. In Ghana, it is a mixture of sand and bare ground beach.

Gambia boasts of lush beaches, hence it is dubbed the Smiling Coast. However, there is a stretch of white sandy beach not  as long as Lagos.  That is why it is rather disheartening  watching this gift of nature to Lagos being gradually washed away.

Some of the fun seekers expressed unhappiness over the state of the beach and called on the government to intervene and save the beach.

Demola Akande said he stays in the United State, and having returned during the Easter period, decided to hang out at Lekki Beach.

” Men, things have really changed here.  This place and Alpha Beach used to be my hang-outs when I was still in Nigeria. I have pleasant memories of the place.

” That is why on my return home, I decided to come here and have a good time. The vibe here is not as high as it used to be. The government should save these beaches”, Akande said.

Another visitor, Mrs. Victoria Ameh, was thankful to God there is still a place to stay.

She said: “Obviously the beach has deteriorated. I know that. But I wanted my children to have a beach experience during this Easter. You can see my youngest daughter participating in the dance competition on stage.

“She is having fun. We can’t do that at home. That is why I decided to bring them here. I want the government to salvage the beach before it becomes late. There are not so many places around that we can take our children to at a time like this.”

One of the owners of the canopies and chairs that people rent complained about low patronage.

He said: “People no dey come like before. Some them self, when they come, dem go sit for those rocks. If na before, this place for don full pass the way it is now.”

Despite, the shortcomings, the visitors who had to cough up N1000 each to enter the beach area still said they had a good time.

However, noticeably is the lack of life guards at the beach front area to control people from swimming too close to the ocean water.

In addition, despite the ocean current being high with huge tide crashing on the beach, there was no flag whatsoever to indicate danger or areas to be avoided. The absence of some of these in the past has led to avoidable drowning in the ocean.

The trip to the ocean, despite the negative environmental impact, is still fun.

  • When business meets pleasure in Lekki

When business meets pleasure in Lekki

Golf and business meetings have gone together since the dawn of the game. The world over, there are more to golf facilities than just recreation and sporting events. To say the least, they have become job creation opportunities that both the public and private sectors can no longer ignore.

So, when in 2010, the Lagos State government announced the building of a modern golf resort as part of its plan for the Lekki Mega City, not a few enterprising individuals and organisations saw immense opportunities in the plan by the Babatunde Fashola administration to blend business with pleasure in a sporty manner.

Expectedly, many Lagosians and even Nigerians, looked forward to the implementation of the government’s plan for the Lekki Peninsula, an axis of the state that has over the last couple of years, assumed a special status as the place to live for men and women of means. The master plan, aimed at making a new city out of the Lekki peninsula, was seen by many, as a right step towards preparing Lagos for the challenges ahead.

According to the state government, the updated land use master plan will provide a total built-up area of about 10,380 hectares and can accommodate a residential population of about 3.4 Million persons and non-residential population, such as touristic, hotels, commercial, offices, medical (hospitals and clinics) and industrial, of about 1.9 Million persons.

Being one of the most dynamic growth areas in Lagos State, the state government ensured nothing disturbed the take off of the laudable project. And today, the dream city in the Peninsula is coming alive. Right in the middle of it all is the Lekki Golf Resort where business and pleasure will constantly meet when it’s finally ready.

A recent drive around the emerging city by our correspondent revealed the determination of the current administration in Lagos State to deliver on its promise to the people concerning the Lekki Mega City. Commendable is the government’s desire to deliver to the people, a city they will all be proud of. One of the visible signs that the promise is being kept is the Lekki Beach Golf Resort overlooking the beach.

The emerging masterpiece leaves no one in doubt that the Ibukun Fakeye-led management of Ocean Beach Golf and Leisure Resorts Limited, are ready to contribute their quota to efforts that will see the full implementation of the promises made to Nigerians by Fashola in 2010.

Standing magnificently on a 148-hectare (about 370-acre) land and spanning 2.5-kilometre of the pristine ocean front, the resort is minutes away from the incredible beaches. Sprouting up all around it are beautiful chalets and other creatively designed structures that speak volume about the distinctive culture and value of the state and its people.

A chat with one of the Engineers working on the site revealed a desire by both the government and its private sector partners to deliver the resort before the end of the current tenure. He explained that the primary objective of the promoters of the enterprise is to encourage communal participation between the local community, the state and corporate organisations, according to mutually recognised individual interests.

He added that basic requirements of a world class golf resort that include a well-conditioned and well-designed golf course, hospitable clubhouse, good eats and drinks as well as a welcoming atmosphere, are all part of the total package they are expected to deliver when the project is completed.

Already, locals around the area have been benefitting immensely from the yet-to-be-completed project. Aside from the trading port that the crowded construction sites have become for men and women selling all sorts of wares to the ready buyers they have in the workmen and women on sites, artisans and professionals of various cadre are daily being recruited to participate in the huge construction works currently ongoing.

“Even these are not the main employment opportunities we envisaged. These are temporary opportunities. As I speak to you, we are already being besieged with application letters by people who want to work here when we finish. The expectations of the people are high and we are working hard to deliver in good time. The Governor and the management of the resort company are eager too,” our source added.

  • Training for commercial drivers

To promote road safety and improve road users’ habits, Lekki Concession Company (LCC) has completed the second edition of training and re-certification for 100 of the 200 drivers selected from commercial bus operators from motor parks located in Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki.

Head of Commercial, LCC, Mr. Charles Imevbore, said: “We maintain regular dialogue with recognised road transport unions and private operators, thus providing an avenue for continuous coaching on road safety guidelines and best practices, including features such as proper use of roundabouts and illegal parking,” he said.

He added: “Improving road safety in a sustainable way means that road users need to adapt their behaviour accordingly, and to learn to drive more responsibly. LCC alone cannot achieve this; others (law enforcement agencies, the wider community etc) have a major role to play.”

“We hope that our modest contributions so far and those we plan to develop, will bring positive change and save lives. We encourage commercial operators to register on our eTag, an electronic toll payment device, which charges N80 exclusively for commercial buses at the toll plaza.”

“With eTag, drivers won’t waste time queueing on the cash lanes, thus they can make more trips, thus translating into more income for them,” he said.
