Balogun inks a year deal in Cyprus

Veteran Nigeria defender Leon Balogun has signed a one-year contract with Cypriot First Division club Aris Limassol, following the expiration of his deal with Rangers FC in Scotland.

The 36-year-old centre-back, who was born in Berlin and has represented Nigeria 46 times, joins Aris as a free agent ahead of the 2025-26 season. His move marks the next chapter in a career that has spanned top European leagues, including the English Premier League, German Bundesliga, and Scottish Premiership.

Balogun’s arrival is a major boost for Aris Limassol, who will benefit from his vast experience at the highest level of club and international football. The 1.90m tall defender boasts appearances for clubs across Germany, England, and Scotland.

He began his professional journey in Germany with Hertha Berlin, later making his Bundesliga debut for Hannover 96 in the 2008–09 season. Balogun went on to feature for Werder Bremen, Fortuna Düsseldorf, Darmstadt, and Mainz 05, where he became a regular in the Bundesliga, making 75 top-flight appearances and scoring once.

In 2018, he moved to the English Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion, where he made 8 league appearances and scored once. He later joined Wigan Athletic on loan, before sealing a switch to Rangers FC in 2020.

During his time in Scotland, Balogun became a fan favourite, playing a key role as Rangers won the Scottish Premiership title, the Scottish Cup, and the Scottish League Cup. He made a total of 114 appearances for the club across two spells, sandwiching a season at Queens Park Rangers (QPR) in the English Championship.

Balogun also featured in 29 European matches, scoring twice, further highlighting his continental pedigree.

On the international scene, Balogun has been a consistent presence for the Super Eagles of Nigeria since making his debut in 2014. He was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and helped the team secure third place at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

He has 46 caps and one international goal to his name, and was widely admired for his leadership and composure at the back for the national team.

Balogun’s move to Aris Limassol, who won the league in 2023, comes at a time when the club is looking to bolster its defensive line and build on recent successes in the domestic league and European competitions.

In a statement on the club’s website, Aris hailed Balogun’s wealth of experience and welcomed him to the team.

Rangers’ end to winless streak thrills Balogun

Nigeria international defender  Leon Balogun is thrilled that his Scottish Premiership side, Rangers , got a commanding home victory over Aberdeen which ended a frustrating winless streak at Ibrox.

The Gers snapped a seven-game home drought with a dominant second-half performance, featuring goals from Vaclav Cerny, Cyriel Dessers, Hamza Igamane, and Jefte.

“It’s been seven games without a win at Ibrox, which is nothing to be proud of,” Balogun told the club’s official website. “That’s why it feels good to finally lift that weight off our shoulders.”

Reflecting on the match, the Nigerian defender felt the team was in control but admitted there was still untapped potential.

“From start to finish, it was a fairly comfortable performance. But the gaffer told us at half-time that there was more to give — an extra 10 to 15 percent — and we pushed harder in the second half. You could see what we’re capable of.”

While pleased with the clean sheet, Balogun acknowledged the team’s challenges throughout the season.

“It’s been a while since we kept a clean sheet, so I’ll take the positives. We’re aware of the negatives — we’re not blind to them and we won’t ignore them — but our focus is now on moving forward.”

Looking ahead, Balogun urged his teammates to maintain their form in the final two matches of the season.

“Wednesday will be our last game at Ibrox this season, and we owe the fans, who’ve been incredible, a strong finish. It’s been a tough ride for them. After that, we go to Hibs, and we need to put in the same kind of performance.”

“I’ve wanted this for ten years—to be a Rangers player—ever since I first walked through the doors,” he said. “Everyone knows how much I love this club. I embrace everything it stands for. It’s really close to my heart, so if I can stay another season, I’d be more than happy.”

Balogun, Dessers  get new coach at Glasgow  Rangers

Super Eagles duo  of Cyriel Dessers and  Leon Balogun will now be working  with a new coach following the appointment of  Barry Ferguson as interim manager at Glasgow  Rangers.

This development comes after the dismissal of Philippe Clement after a disappointing 2-0 home loss to Saint Mirren which left the team 13 points behind  leaders, Celtic, in the Scottish Premiership .

According to a statement from the club, Ferguson, a hall of fame member and former club captain who won five league titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups across two spells at Ibrox, will be joined by coaches Issame Charai, Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor.

Rangers CEO, Patrick Stewart, reacted to the sack of Philippe Clement and the appointment of Barry Ferguson, saying: “Philippe and his team have worked tirelessly during their time in at the club and have played an important role in developing the first team’s young players.

“I want to reiterate, the issues we are facing run deeper than the manager. The ongoing football review seeks to address those issues, and we will continue to implement its findings in the coming weeks and months ahead of appointing a new, permanent manager.

“When I spoke to RangersTV last week, I was clear that everyone is judged on results, and nobody will get unlimited time in any role at the club. Ultimately, the team’s response following their early exit from the Scottish Cup was a cause for deep concern, leading the board to conclude that action had to be taken now.

“I want to wish Philippe every success in the future. He is a fine man whom I have enjoyed working with in my short time here so far.”

“I also want to welcome Barry back to the club. We appreciate him and his team stepping into the role at this difficult time. Myself, the board and the executive team will give them our full support for the rest of the campaign,” he concluded.

Barry Ferguson’s tenure as Rangers head coach begins on Wednesday with an away match against Kilmarnock. Dessers, the team’s top scorer with 18 goals this season, will aim to make a positive impact and help Ferguson start his new role on a high note.

Meanwhile, Leon Balogun will be working towards regaining full fitness in time for Rangers’ crucial upcoming fixtures under Ferguson’s leadership.

Balogun offers Eagles tips for World Cup qualifiers

Rangers defender Leon Balogun has implored the Super Eagles  to approach the last six games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with winning mentality and should not settle for less  in next month’s crucial games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

The Super Eagles are currently facing an uphill task in Group C of the qualifiers, sitting in fifth place with three  points from four matches. They trail Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin, who  jointly occupy the top three spots, by seven points.

They will slug it out with Rwanda and Zimbabwe in must win qualifying ties next month but despite the challenging situation, Leon Balogun remains optimistic about the team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and USA.

Balogun stressed that the players must have unwavering self-belief in an interview with Ayodele Olu Ibidapo on his official YouTube channel.

He said: “Everybody knows it’s a difficult situation, a lot of people think it’s not really possible but you need to have this supreme confidence if you are playing for the Super Eagles.

“We are top of Africa, we need to get back to the top, and we need to earn that again. We still have the reputation but we just need to back it up with performances.”

Balogun acknowledged the team’s recent shortcomings but encouraged them to focus on the remaining six games and have it in mind that they have to win them.

“Recently we fell short but nobody is free from errors. We have six games left so that’s six chances to make it right. So why not go in there with supreme confidence? Look at the names, there’s no team that you have to hide from. We need to focus on ourselves,” Balogun continued.

The experienced defender also praised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for appointing Eric Chelle, giving him sufficient time to assess the team and prepare for the qualifiers: “The NFF has done a great job in getting a new manager just in time so he can scout and assess players and get enough time. I think he’s blessed with a very good foundation with the potential in the squad.”

    Balogun eyes  Super Eagles’ return

Super Eagles defender, Leon Balogun is optimistic he still has the prerequisites  to play for Nigeria and will honour a call up if invited.

Now 36 years old, Balogun used to be a key figure under former coach Gernot Rohr but injuries have disrupted his progress in the Super Eagles.

Now fully fit, the former Mainz 05 player is determined to reclaim his place in the national team as Nigeria prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“I didn’t reject an invitation; unfortunately, just before the World Cup break, I suffered an injury that was supposed to keep me out for a few weeks, but things didn’t go as planned,” Balogun said in an interview with Brila FM.

“I couldn’t join the squad because I wasn’t yet fit, and even after I recovered, I had a setback. However, since then, I haven’t had any major injuries.

“I’ve always been available. I’ve never announced my retirement from international football. Those who need to know are aware that I’m still eager and determined to represent the national team.”

The Gers will confront Dynamo Kiev of Ukraine on today in the 3rd  qualifying round of the Champions League and the Nigerian has revealed that reaching the group stage of the lucrative foremost club competition would be his biggest motivation ahead of the game.

”I have never played in the Champions League, I have played in qualifiers before, for Rangers as well, it didn’t work out,” Balogun told a press conference ahead of the clash in Lublin.

“At this stage of my career it would be one of my biggest achievements, that is my personal motivation and I’m sure every single player who came out here today has their own individual reasons to go to the group stages.

“I think everybody is very determined to put in a performance tomorrow. It has obviously been a quick turnaround, but it is a big occasion.”

Rangers urged to extend Balogun’s contract

Former Celtic and West Ham United forward, Frank McAvennie, has urged the Rangers board to renew Leon Balogun’s contract, claiming the Nigerian deserves regular playing time, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 35-year-old centre-back rejoined Rangers for a second stint last summer after his contract with Queens Park Rangers expired, but the decision has not gone according to plan for him.

The former Mainz 05 man has been subject to just 16 games all season, starting one in the last twelve weeks. He was recalled into the starting eleven in Rangers 2-nil win over Hearts and McAvennie believes his performance should command more playing time at Ibrox.

Balogun’s contract with the Scottish record champions runs out in the summer, and with talks of a renewal absent, Frank McAvennie believes Rangers should extend his deal as his experience will come in handy for Philippe Clement’s side.

“Balogun played very well against Hearts. I don’t know what’s happened to Goldson, whether he’s been found out or if Clement is giving him a break.  I think that Rangers fans will be frustrated if Goldson comes straight back in after Balogun’s performance now. Balogun was amazing along with John Souttar. Rangers are going to need all their players for this run-in, but I think he deserves a new deal despite his age,” the former West Ham striker told Football Insider.

  • Leon Balogun: Rangers’ return helping me to stay focus

Leon Balogun: Rangers’ return helping me to stay focus

Outspoken Nigerian defender Leon Balogun is enjoying his second missionary journey to the Scottish football giants Rangers. The tall defender returned to Rangers this year July, a year after departing from the club as a free agent. His return was celebrated by the club and its fans as well as Balogun himself.

At first, he described it as ‘come home’ but after four months of gradual integration into the heart of the team, Balogun is thanking his star for going back to Ibrox.

The 35-year old he’s especially happy with the challenges and that he’s back putting in times on the pitch.

He said while speaking with Rangers TV.

“It’s really nice to be back [in the team]. I had some challenging weeks, so for me, I just want to make sure I enjoy every minute I am on the pitch.

“I just want to represent the club and it is nice that the wins are coming; we are putting in strong performances and hopefully I will stay in the mix now.”

He added that the new manager Philippe Clement who joined them in October has impacted positively in the team, while reflecting on his recent game time after starting the last three domestic fixtures.

He added: “I think his ways, he is very straightforward when you speak to him, he has this manner about him where you know he is just very clear.

“He just wants to make sure that we get every single detail. Obviously one thing that always happens if a new manager comes in the door is that everybody is trying to present themselves from the best side.

“That will factor in, but mainly it is down to the way he works which is really focused on details. He is just really into the details and that helps. The door is always open but again he is very clear as well and demanding.

“I was needed, I also needed games. I am happy that I could take my chance there. For me it just helps that he is very clear.

“I am one of the older guys so obviously I have a bit of experience as well. For me it was just taking the messages on board just like any other player and then producing.”

Balogun has since assumed his leadership position on returning saying it feels as if he never left.

Speaking to the media in the press conference ahead of the all-important game against rivals Aberdeen last Sunday, Balogun said they were looking forward to continue their fine run of form.

A win in the game would have taken them closer to the league zenith with leaders Celtic, who dropped points against Motherwell last Saturday.

The defender wanted the team to continue where they left off with a positive feeling amongst the team at present.

Rangers , however could only salvaged a point with James Tavernier’s stoppage-time penalty to rescue a late draw at Aberdeen.

He commented: “We are privileged to be in the club where we have so many games coming thick and fast. Obviously it is challenging as well, we are going to need the full squad.

“You see everybody is buying into it. It feels good on the pitch right now, the confidence in each other in the group as a whole and what the manager is doing I think it’s pretty high.

“I think it was vital that we had more training time the international break based on the fact that the manager has been here for some weeks now. He wants to get more of his ideas and his philosophy, get it to us clearer and I think it has worked really well so far which has been displayed in the performances as well.

“The break was nice. We had quite a decent squad size still here and we worked on some things physical and tactical obviously. I think everybody is looking forward to getting going again.”

“I think every team is always trying hard against us. That is with all due respect, nothing new really. We all know that there is especially from Aberdeen’s side there is great value to that game, because of the rivalry.

“You always know that up there is not going to be pretty, they are going to make it hard for you. I remember the first time I played there actually; I ended up being slammed against a goalpost. It was my first game in Scotland, so that was a proper welcome.

“It is always games where everybody is fighting with their hardest bandage. For us, it is about focusing on our game and how we first of all try to deal with that, accept it and then still try to play our football.”

    POSITIVE MOMENTUM

The game against Aberdeen was a dress rehearsal to this month’s Viaplay Cup final, and Balogun believes that should Rangers will do well to continue in their positive momentum after booking their place in the Viaplay Cup final.

He said he’s looking forward to the Cup final clash against Aberdeen after helping his club secure the final ticket after beating Hearts at Hampden.

The Nigerian made his second successive start in the backline in the game as a brace from James Tavernier bookended another Scott Wright strike at Hampden to send the Light Blues into next month’s final where Aberdeen lie in wait.

Speaking to RangersTV after the triumph, the Nigerian reflected on another positive triumph: “Keeping up momentum is vital.

“We are chasing and the manager has said he wants us to win everything there is to win and to do that we need to create even more momentum and keep building.

“I am sure he has more things for us to take on board in terms of how he wants us to play.

“If I am picking him up right, he is quite happy with what we have been doing so far. But, then again, there is no time or room for complacency.

The critical period in the contest for Philippe Clement’s men arrived shortly after the interval as three goals inside a 20-minute spell blew Hearts away.

Balogun says the manager’s half-time intervention was key as he praised the performance levels of the team since the Belgian’s arrival.

He continued: “It was great, we scored great goals and it was a strong team performance.

“On the back of the last week where we played against Hearts, when we had to chase, but today we were dominant throughout the game. You can see that with the score.

“We kept repeating what we wanted to do in the game and it paid off really well for us.

“Everyone was really strong from start to finish, we pulled through and it is always nice to be at Hampden as you are close to a trophy or playing for something. We are now one step away.”

“The gaffer is strong and he is clear in what he wants and demands. He brings across his messages really well and you can see that in our performances.

‘If I interpret it right then we are probably in certain moments, ahead of schedule, in terms of what he was expecting in how fast we are taking on board what he wants to implement.

“Everyone is really happy and the game was very enjoyable with what was at stake.”

As Rangers gear up for the Viaplay Cup final, billed for December 17, 2023 at Hampden Park, Balogun said he’s looking forward to lifting another trophy with Rangers. He has won the Scottish Cup and Scottish League with Rangers in 2022 and 2021 respectively.

  • No action for Leon Balogun as Brighton hammers Spurs 3-0

It was a sit and watch setting for Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun as Brighton and Hove Albion beat visiting Spurs 3-0 on Saturday.

The Nigeria international has not seen action in five straight Brighton matches including the 3-1 loss to Aston Villa in the league cup.

The former Werder Bremen ace who joined Brighton just before the last World cup in Russia has only managed eight appearances for the side and was an unused substitute on Saturday as teammate and French import Neal Maupay opened scoring for Brighton in the 3rd minute of the match while Aaron Cornolly scored brace to shoot the tie beyond Spurs.

Balogun who was part of the Super Eagles squad to both the last world cup and the last Nations cup in Egypt played combined seven matches in both competitions in which the Eagles crashed out in the group stage and finished in the third place respectively.

Brighton players celebrate with Aaron Cornolly after his brace Saturday

He has however been left out of the Eagles squad for this month’s friendly against Brazil in Singapore.  His exclusion may not be unconnected with his lack of playing time in his club. The 31 year old appears to be suffering the same fate with compatriot and Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho who has continued to be on the sidelines, managing in a few cases to have single digit playing time at the King Power Stadium.

Interestingly the last time Brighton scored more than goal in a league match dates back to December 2018 against Crystal Palace.
