“After a verbal hearing with the German Football Association’s sports tribunal, Leon Balogun’s suspension for blatant misconduct in the form of violence against an opponent was reduced to two games and a 10,000 Euro fine after the charge was reduced to careless conduct.

“The panel reduced the decision of a three game ban that was originally given out by a single judge. Balogun as well as the club Mainz 05 agreed to the new judgment.

“The change means that the centre-back will be available for Mainz’s final home match of the season against Hertha BSC (Saturday 14th May),” Goal quoted the tribunal as saying in the statement.

Balogun was banned for violent conduct in Mainz 1-2 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt two weeks ago.

    Leon Balogun joins Mainz 05

Super Eagles full back, Leon Balogun, has joined Bundesliga side, Mainz, in a three-year deal after a successful spell with Darmstadt where he starred in the club promotion to the Bundesliga.

Balogun told supersport.com that he was very happy and grateful for the opportunity to join an established Bundesliga side.

“I think it’s a good move to a team that has established itself over the last few years in the Bundesliga.

“I’m very excited to reach my goals with the new club and I am looking forward to a new start,” he told supersport.com.

The 26-year-old moved to Mainz as a free agent after ending his contract with Darmstadt 98, but he remains grateful for the opportunity the club gave him to pick up his career after injuring his leg while on international duty for Nigeria in March last year.

“I’m very grateful for everything SV Darmstadt 98 has done for me. It was the club that gave me the opportunity to step on the stage again after my injury.

“What we made out of it was sensational, almost a miracle. Without the club, none of this would have happened. So I give thanks to everybody at the club, because it was them who believed in me and my abilities,” an excited Balogun told supersport.com.

Mainz’s sporting Director said the club officials were alerted about Balogun during his time at Fortuna Düsseldorf, but then he suffered an injury which threw him off course.

“A strong season with Darmstadt 98 put him back on our radar. He is a physically strong, dynamic right back who can also play in the centre of defence. We are looking forward to having such a highly motivated and ambitious player, who is really passionate about playing in the Bundesliga,” the sporting Director added.

Darmstadt 98 defender Leon Balogun, 26, was pleased to be recalled to the Nigeria national team for their upcoming friendlies against Uganda and South Africa.

The right – back has been in the international wilderness for more than a year after injuring his right foot in a pre – World Cup friendly against Mexico, which contributed to his omission from the tournament in Brazil.

“I am very happy to be back with the Super Eagles. I’m really looking forward to linking up with my team mates in Uyo. I will be in Uyo on Sunday (today).

“I have already spoken with Anthony Ujah (also called up by Nigeria) and he’s also delighted,” said Leon Balogun to the official website of the Nigeria Federation, thenff.com.

Leon Balogun has scored 3 goals in 13 matches in the 2 Bundesliga this term, his best tally since turning professional eight years ago.

    Leon Balogun returns from injury

Super Eagles one cap defender Leon Balogun,   who has been out injured for three weeks, marked his return to the pitch for his team Darmstadt in their 0-0 draw with Kaiserslautern.

He was introduced in the 88th minute and helped the team survived a late onslaught by Kaiserslautern which takes them to third on the log, well within the range of promotion to the Bundesliga.

Balogun picked up an injury two games before the international break, bringing a halt to his fine start with Darmstadt, despite being out injured since June.

Since joining the Bundesliga promotion hopefuls, Balogun who was released by Fortuna Dusseldorf in the summer, has made four appearances scoring a goal against Nuremburg.

The 26 year old has one cap for Nigeria which unfortunately ended just a few minutes after he came on, after he suffered a broken ankle in a nasty collision with the pitch panels.

It led to his omission from the Nigeria World Cup team, and despite having his career back on track at Darmstadt, the Nigeria national team selectors are yet to look in his direction.

    Leon Balogun seeks England switch

Super Eagles defender, Leon Balogun, has said he will undergo trials with an unnamed English club after he was released by German club Fortuna Dusseldorf.

“I am going on a sort of trials with an English club,” africanFootball.com quoted Balogun as saying in a radio interview.

The 26-year-old Balogun made a short-lived debut for Nigeria against Mexico in March and suffered a foot injury which sidelined him for several months.

The tall defender, who has a Nigerian father and German mother, has also featured for Hannover 96 and Werder Bremen.

  • Leon Balogun ready to play for Nigeria

Leon Balogun ready to play for Nigeria

Kfortuna Dusseldorf of Germany defender Leon Balogun has exclusively revealed to supersport.com his deep desire is to play for Nigeria.

” I will walk to Spain, then swim across the ocean, catch a canoe just to honour the call. It will be the pinnacle of my career to represent the country of my father’s birth, especially because my father was always proud to be a Nigerian” Balogun told supersport.com.

Balogun was in the Dusseldorf side that were relegated from the Bundesliga last season where he started half of the matches.”

“It was not a good feeling but Bundesliga 2 is as strong as many first divisions in other European countries and currently we are improving and hopefully should be able to bounce back.”

Back to his international ambitions. Asked on what he makes of those who say that he is hoping reap where he had not sown with regards to a World Cup place.

“Nobody called me. Nobody came to watch me play during the qualifiers. If they had, I repeat I would have jumped at it and would have contributed my quota to the course”

One of the most fascinating things about Balogun is his fluency in English considering that he has never visited nor lives in an English living country.

“I taught myself mostly because I have always liked to speak the language. I listened to music, I watched films and TV programmes and then added to the classes in school.”

The former Weder Bremen defender believes that central defence is his best position. “I have been playing most of my matches now as a right back for Dusseldorf but central defence is where I have originally always liked. However, maybe because of my speed, especially on my offensive and my crossing have made my coach prefer playing me at right back”

Balogun is a rare breed of footballers in his humility and even the car he drives “My parents taught me to be content with what I have and where I am. They grounded me properly so that material things are not so important” He does not have arrogance about him and explains why he never got capped by German youth teams “maybe I was not good enough at the time. I will never say that when I was growing up through the ranks that my game would have stood out enough then. I am not hung up on that at all.”

Many would have expected him to have moved away from Dusseldorf after the relegation. He sees it a bit different.

“I play more now at this club. More than I did at Bremen so I will rather be playing football regularly at my age instead of sitting on the bench at a big club side.”

Final word to Keshi? “I will make the life of every forward that comes up against me miserable throughout the match. I will guarantee 100% commitment to the cause and I am a firm believer in team work. Offensively and physically I am powerful enough. I have the speed for the position. I will be honoured to be given just a trial.”
